Episode 3 - Editing Back in Progress (* unfinished project *)

Gald you liked it hehe..

You mention that you didn't like Palpatine's quick response to Anakin. I did this purposely. I wanted it to seem like he was almost Interrupting Anakin... as if to say "Stop thinking that. Think this now."

Remember my whole explanation? If I can't show that Palpatine is seducing him into doing evil deeds... I can still show that he is impregnating his mind with this sort of dark, twisted reasoning.

You mention the shot of anakin reacting. I originally didn't have it there. I cut to the next shot of Palpatine talking, but it felt weird to change angles and almost change positions of the actors as well... so I inserted that.

As for the death of Dooku, I completely agree. Had it been one flowing shot it would have worked so much better. Anakin puts the blades to his neck too thoughtfully for me to really do too much. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to remedy this. I've been playing with it trying to get it to work but I'm not sure what I can do.

Anyone have any suggestions?

I've actually played around with the edits a bit so if you'd like, you can view this version now:

Dooku Version 3

I've only done minor edits. Fixing two glitches in the last video and tightening a bit of the editing.

Well, as promised, here is my Dooku Edit.

What I decided to go for were subtle changes, as, since I spoke earlier about how the scene wasn't "that bad," I didn't feel the need for too many.

And as God says to Bender in Futurama: "When you do things right, people won't be sure You've done anything at all." lol

Anyways, one idea I had was to make it appear that Anakin got carried away... that perhaps Dooku's line about "You have hate, you have anger. But you don't use them" might have sparked him to actually use them and that killing Dooku was a slip up... he got too into the battle and just went with it.

You can download the video here:

My Dooku Edit

There are two glitches I still need to fix, but it gives you a general idea of what I saw.

I decided to start this from earlier than anyone else's edits because I wanted to bring something to light that was recently told to me ...

The very end of the Beginning battle sequence, the music that is layered over the landing is actually NOT meant to be there. We found most of the cue, but a lot of it is still missing. In the film, they use a bit of tracked music as to end the cue early, but also some of the unreleased bit... there is still a good portion of unreleased/unused/unheard music that we havn't found...

Anyways, I start my video right where the music we did find begins... it goes into the entrance of Grevious, and then into the Elevator Scene.... it is seriously like 5 minutes of straight music. Then you get to dooku and it's a battle that almost has NO music... (we think there might have been more but none has been released).

Anyways, I include this all in the edit. The only omission before the dooku scene I did was the short scene of the two battle droids walking into the hangar saying "Those are Jedi Fighters Alright" so that there wasn't a gap between the music from "General Grevious'" cue and "The Elevator Scene."

Also worthy of note: I use an alternate take of the cue "The Elevator Scene" which has extra percussion (namely snare). The album version doesn't have this and I felt it might heighten the scene a bit using this instead.

The edits I made in the video itself are as follows:

01) I cut away from the shot of them exiting the elevator early and skip to the next shot. You see in the distance Palpatine swivel in his chair.

02) I cut to a close up of Palpatine in his chair

03) I cut back to Obi-Wan and Anakin turning to walk down the stairs. The next few moments are the same up until "Count Dooku" and the shot showing his arrival.

04) I remove the lines " This time we'll do it together," and "I was going to say that." I just cut to Anakin walking behind Obi-Wan to get into position.

05) I remove the lines about him being a sith lord and simply cut to Obi-Wan disrobing

06) After Obi-Wan's like about how Dooku won't get away this time, I cut to a slightly slowed down shot of Dooku extending his lightsaber.

07) I cut to Dooku saying his line "I've been looking forward to this."

08) Cut to Obi-Wan and Anakin extending their lightsabers.\

09) Cut to overhead shot of the duel beginning

10) Cut to Anakin saying "My powers have doubled" blah

11) I cut Palpatine's reaction shots and cut to Obi-Wan being force pushed away. (trimming both the push and the landing shots becuase they are too long)

12) Cut to Anakin swiping at Dooku

13) I remove a few moments of DOoku running up the stairs and jump to the next angle from above of them battling up the stairs

14) I trim some of the shot of Obi-Wan getting up

15) cut to the battle droids being destroyed

16) cut to obi-wan about to fight dooku

17) I remove a little bit of Anakin sitting around looking at the Obi-Wan and then to Dooku.. and trim it so that it flows faster

18) Cut quickly to Anakin jumping at Dooku

19) Cut to the closeup of Anakin and Dooku with dooku's line about hate and anger a little bit early just to push it that much further

20) Cut to Obi- wan attacking dooku. Trimmed the shot mostly. there were a few extra un-neccesary seconds.

21) I speed up the shot of Anakin cutting off Dooku's hands.

22) Cut to Anakin with Dooku's blade

23) cut to a slightly sped up shot of Anakin placing the blades at Dooku's neck

24) cut to Anakin slicing

25) Cut to Palpatine saying "Good, Anakin! Good!"

26) Cut back to medium shot of Anakin putting the sabers away...

27) As anakin explains he shouldn't have killed dooku, I cut to Palpatine getting out of the chair with Palpatine saying "It is only natural," as if to combat what anakin had to say about the Jedi way.

28) Cut to a short shot of Anakin reacting.

29) Cut to Palpatines line "Remmeber what you told me about your mother? And the Sand people?"

30) Cut to a shot of Anakin looking away with Palpatines line "You wanted Revenge" layered over it... as to mask that horrid tuskan raider sfx.

31) cut a little early to Palpatine saying they must leave.

And that's all the edits I did... just to give you all some ideas.

The problem I have with the edits of Count DOoku and such is that you have to remember the film in the way it would be watched.

Episode III is split into three discernible acts.

Act I: Most reminiscent of Episode I.
This is the more playful, childish act that shows the characters in how they were allowing for a dichotomy against what would become of them and heightening the tragedy that will befall them with the destruction of Obi-Wan and Anakin's friendship.

Act II: Most reminiscent of Episode II.
This shows Anakin and Padme, showing their love for eachother, their lives together, their short lived family life, and the lengths to which Anakin is willing to go to save the one he loves.

Act III: The Climactic ending to Episode III.
This shows the fall of the Jedi, the turning of Anakin, the destruction of a friendship, and the placing of the pieces to be ready for the next film.

The problem I most have with your edit is that in killing Dooku so quickly, and without remorse, it does two things:

Firstly, It stands out, alone, as quite possibly the darkest moment ever. Anakin is neither visibly angry with Dooku, nor does he seem to shaken by what he's done afterwards (only apologetic to the extent which he can be with the Chancellor.)

And secondly, it removes that which becomes a very prevelent theme in this film: Palpatine's Seduction. Perhaps one of the greatest themes in the film, also the underlying theme of the series, is Palpatine's ability to seduce actions out of people. In Palpatine being able to get Anakin to kill Dooku, he proves to himself that not only is Anakin a worthy apprentice in his ability of mastering the force, but also that he has control over Anakin...to the extent that he can make Anakin do something he KNOWS is wrong and he KNOWS he shouldn't have done.

When Anakin tells him all this, Palpatine teaches Anakin the trick that allows all evil people to be evil: compliance. By teaching Anakin how to rationalize what he's just done, he becomes compliant to it and through the rest of the film, learns how to rationalize everything he's done and feel no guilt for it and be able to bold-face LIE to Padme.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with the film edit as it was. Yes there were a few shots that could have been tightened, and it did have a slightly childlike attitude (fully intentional) but it also did what it needed to. If anything is to blame for the sequence being strange it is the performances themselves. Christopher Lee did all his parts in about 20 minutes. The rest was another stand in.

I dunno, I guess I'm curious what you were trying for and what your reasoning is for this heh...

Hey all... I've kept working on this... toying with a few things.

One thing I realized is why exactly I love that shot of the Naboo Star Skiff leaving Mustafar... it's because it really helps the scene along. You have that whole sequence with Padme, then you have this long shot of the skiff taking off (really fast compared to how it lands I might add) and flying away...

then this long shot of Obi-Wan sitting in the cockpit...thinking. You need something to break that up.

I toyed around with a few versions. In the one I have here, you'll see that I chose to have the shot of the ship flying away, a backwards shot of a slight pull in to mustafar (making it a slow pull out) then a slight fade shot to Obi-Wan thinking.

I thought of maybe breaking up the long take off shot with the slight pull out... if anyone knows of a quick way to insert a pic of the skiff let me know... I tried finding a good HQ pic of the skiff maybe on a white background ( that I coudl then paint green and separate the image) but I couldn't find anything...

Then I'd finish the shot of it flying away... and by then, I'd have used up some of the time of Obi-Wan thinking... (if I simply leave the audio track alone) which then fixes it all... but I couldn't find a pic of the skiff so I decided on what I have here for now.

One of the things I've been doing is really paying attention to the little moments that the actors create with their expressions. For instance, after Padme asks "Is Anakin alright?," you se a shot of Obi-Wan looking at her... then he almost winces away... realizing what he's done.

I decided to highlight this by adding in a little bit of dialogue of just padme, almost breathlessly saying "Anakin"...then some small breaths.... I have to play with her line a bit. This is a rough edit. I'm trying to find a good take of her saying it... once I do, I'm going to isolate it, rip it from the dvd as a wav (as right now the audio isn't that high in quality) and then edit it... the artifacts you're hearing are because of the slightly lower quality.

I also played with the visions, trying to make them a little bit better on their disolves and such.

Also, If I want the line "You still have much to learn my apprentice" where I put it, I decided I needed to extend the shot of Yoda opening his eyes, so I did that by stretching out that part of the shot and after the line, letting it go back to its original speed.

Let me know what you all think. I'm about to begin work on the actual birth itself... so that's coming up soon... phew...so much to do! lol

I watched you videos and commented on them on youtube heh...

some interesting edits. Was there a method to this? With the edits I'm doing, I'm trying to remove Vader... and Leia... but I wasn't sure where you were going with yours?

The music is a bit loud, but these arn't the final mixes obviously. I wasn't sure I liked all you're choices of music (most from the OT) but that's ok... to each his own. I did see, however, where you were going with this... and what you were trying to say and show through the music... and I liked the idea, especially, of the Emperors theme Playing while Yoda and Palp. battle... makes so much more sense than Vader's theme... especially seeing as, in most of our edits, we remove it totally from the fight... so I feel dumb having not thought of that myself lol

Interesting ideas heh...

Anyways, I actually have taken a lot of what you all have said into consideration...

I decided that I still want some sort of psychic viewing in Yoda's head. I removed a lot of the juxtaposition between seeing Yoda and seeing his visions.

I played with the visions as, unlike film, they don't work like cameras and don't just cut between shots, they fade in and warp and stuff. I'm gonna see if I don't have any better things I can do to play with the video but these are the videos I have right now. Any recommendations?

Also, I did remove that one shot of the skiff leaving Mustafar. I really like that shot though

I also including music and played with the Yoda/Qui-Gon dialogue so it was more... thought like.

I'm pleased with it. Any thoughts (and by thoughts I don't mean your personal beliefs, but rather recommendations and thoughts on ways to make it better lol... there has seemed to have been some confusion on the idea of the difference between how I can make this better and "why do you think I should do instead" lol...

Anyways, let me all know your thoughts...

well, I can see your point, but I think it does well not to dumb down the force as much as many people didn't like when Qui-Gon explained medichloriance (which is funny because it had to be explained).

It doesn't explain it at all, just that there is more to know. The conversation I'm adding doesn't explain that much... it simply hints to the reality that Qui-Gon is back and there is more to know... and you're right that it does seem to slow down the action of the film, but In a way it feels kinda nice to have a little exposition and be able to place Qui-Gon in the film.

I tried flipping the shot, but the planet then becomes noticeably wrong... so I may just cut it.

As I said in a few posts back, I'm trying to create a similar conversation to what was in the original scene..

And in the scene, Yoda becomes Qui-Gon's apprentice. In this way, I say it without having to go through the whole explanitory process... and it just is stated as "my apprentice"... if I could find him saying "new" I might insert that.

I kinda want to re-watch episode I and III and see if there isn't any more dialogue that I could insert for Yoda. I think I got most of what Qui-Gon has said... your idea of using Yoda's Line "How can this be?" would be a good idea... but I don't recall it lol... where in Episode II is it?

I guess my whole thing with the clones was maybe to Show Yoda's distrust that he was the chosen one... to bring balance to the force... The Clones represent the opposite... that things went out of whack... and that Sidious gained power instead of losing it.

As for "ruining" an iconic moment from the PT, I kinda take offense to that lol... I mean... I kinda liked it after I saw it... ... but maybe I'll put it as I'd had it before...

I'll play with the edit more...

It came from the trailer :-p

I was toying with the idea of having young pictures of anakin before the jedi but I needed to rip that and I wanted to test out some other ideas because I went back and ripped more.

I left Palpatine in because it was a reminder of how strong Palpatine had grown ... rather than anakin destroyingf them...

I might actualy just have the line Obi-wan says echoing as well...

I wanted to show what Yoda was seeing, but show yoda simply because I thought it was stronger that way but I did feel it was breaking up the flow which is why I wanted opinions.

The showing of Luke was a last minute idea because, like I said, I'd pulled the first trailer from Episode III and that shot is in there... and I thought "hey, that might be cool... "

Do you like the dialogue? Do you think it's fitting?

I might cut back on some of the shots of Yoda... I kinda still want to show Bail walking in though... but maybe. I'll toy with not including that.

Also, do you guys think I should pull that short clip of the skiff flying away from Mustafar (the unused one). I tried extending it but it got all weird and blurry... I kinda like that shot...

But then agian, becuase You can for some strange reason see Mustafar out the window, you get this weird effect and I don't know if it works..

Ideas? comments?

I used Duel of the Fates from Episode III.

In order to make that when I did my complete score edit for Episode III, I used the instrumental version I made for EPisode I, and layered over the DVD rip from Episode III.

We know from the recording sessions, not to mention the vocals themselves, that the choir was re-recorded for Episode III. Exactly how much or in what sort of edit of DOTF they were recorded, we dont' know... but the vocals were recorded specifically for Episode III, so if you listen carefully, you can hear slightly different pronunciation, annunciations, and lengths and even the mixing of voices. I think a smaller choir was used.

That's what I used.

On another note, I've made a very preliminary attempt at editing Part IV... specifically the conversation between Yoda and Qui-Gon. There are a few errors that I havn't fixed yet, but I wanted to post this to show where I'm going, what I'm using, and to get any ideas or input.

a very random rant indeed :-p

I was curious if anyone knows of good films from which I can rip dialogue that Liam Neeson has spoken, preferably in his natural voice.

Right now I'm working on the scene where yoda is meditating. I want to make it similar to this: T-Bones World Deleted Scene

My idea, currently, is to mix some audio from Episode I, III and even a bit from Narnia... I know people had mentioned Batman Begins, but I don't have that on dvd.. might rent it to get some of the audio. Are there any other films of his that might work?

It was only you?!

Holy...

lol

Amazing job then...that's just ...wow

great job!

If you ever want to go back and fix the pitch shift, I'd be more than willing to help :-p

Great job though...

I actually didn't know about the difference until recently when I was working on a complete score edit for Episode III. The prequels, for some strange reason, have the lines echo in all the channels, so unlike most films, yo can't simply rip the rear channels.

Well, for episode III, the German version of the film didn't have vocal echoes and in some cases, the MIX was actually slightly different... like birth of the twins for example... in the american release, the baby crying is heard in all the channels (which was SO annoying when you tried to incorporate the unreleased moments in with the album stuff because you'd get loud wailing lol) but in the German version, you only hear padme and the droid... no baby at all which was wonderful...

But anyways, as I was doing that, I had to pitch correct EVERYTHING... lol... so I know what you mean when you say it's a learning curve. It certainly was for me lol... It paid off in the end though because it really came out great...

Anyways, wonderful job... great compilation. It's amazing what is out there and what can be incorporated. I only hope they can have some equaly as good break down of the films for the next DVD release (which we all know is coming lol).

Great job!

EDIT:

One of the things I noticed was you also had replaced some of the unused music back into the film... I actually do that with my vidoes.

I have posted quite a few to youtube including some from Empire that you might be interested to see. My name on there is BrachioInGen or you can go here:

Maybe someone can explain this to me... but why is it that this project used the PAL version (?) of the film...

I ask because the transitions between album audio and film audio are so noticeable that it's quite bothersome.

The pitch shift is also annoying... the alternate take of luke's first line... the difference in tamber has to do with the film being sped up as well lol...

I dunno, I like it and I think you guys did a great job, but ... I don't understand why you wouldn't use the correct pitch of the film which would be something from region 1....

Well, you definitely are right with all your observations... unfortunately I know that it completely is beyond my level to do what you ask of removing yoda.

If anything, you've kinda proven to me that we have to show Yoda surviving the fight and leaving the senate chamber simply because of hte large role he plays in the rest of the film.

if only we could restructure the film lol

But yes, I love what you said..and you are completely right... unfortunately I can't do that even with my program... you did make me realize though that I have to show yoda escaping the senate chamber (something I almost cut like how you say).

Great point though... that would be the ideal edit.

there would have to be some way, however, to explain to Obi-Wan before hand that Qui-Gon was back... and he'd have to learn hwo to commune with him ...

perhaps had they left in the encounter on Utapau... and have Qui-Gon actually teach him... then yoda wouldn't have to be around to say that to him...

One of the choices I made early one was to propel the pylon fighting forward by not splitting it up like you see in the film. By moving the Yoda crawling scene there, it splits up that action and I feel, would slow it down more so.

I'd be tempted to remove the entire thing completely, which would do what you are saying, and keep it from interrupting what I'm saying, but I think there needs to be some mention of what happens...

I had put some thought into it, and as much as I like the edit you did, cutting to the explosion, then back to them running for cover...it works well... I'm just not entirely sure if I'd want that because then it would push the cut back to latter...and as I said, it's not something I really want to do.

I dunno... I guess if I could come up with a compromise I liked, I'd do it.

I can see how it would be both ways... and as much as I like your way... I'm kinda want it to be this way... I might try editing it the way you are saying just to give the option...

Well, I played around with the transition more and more... I tweaked a few small things...

One of the things I did do though with the transition was I found a portion of Battle of the Heroes where the choir sings the melody line... I layered it under the first statement as thay battle (I had to shorten it and such to match up musically) but in doing so, it gives a sort of... better continuation with the choir singing so it's not just jumping straight into a choir like it was before. I hope you all like it.

I also played with the transition of them in the Mustafar War Room. Before the musical change was too blatant. Here it seems much more natural.

This,I believe, will be my final edit of this sequence. I'd like to move on to the next sequence lol...

You can download it here:

Part III (Final)

I had to re-save it because the file size was too big, but I'm going to upload it to YouTube now.. it'll take a little while but I'll put the link up when that happens.

I'd still like to get some raw SFX however, even though I don't think I'll be needing them for this part anymore, but It would still be nice to have.

I had to resave it but here it is on youtube:

I'm curious, does anyone know of a some sort of place I can go to download or get Star Wars SFX...I have the lucas film sfx library... but they are raw sounds... unaltered sounds... If I could get some nice Lightsaber sfx, I could use them to fix the transition between Obi-Wan and Anakin on the landing pad to Sidious and Yoda by replacing the music and redoing the SFX... but again, that would require the sfx with which to work lol...

I was thinking...

what is before we cut to Obi-Wan traveling to the ship... we cut back to coruscant, and then when we come back... try to edit some of the shots and make it look like Obi-Wan went to the base of the lava-fall to look for anakin, and finds the lightsaber...and then walks away with it...?

You could incorporate the shot of the base of the lava-fall, then the shot of the bugs walking along the bank... and then show Obi-Wan standing near the lava's edge, picking up the lightsaber, looking out, and walking away?

Maybe incorporate some of the Lament music (Immolation) and then also incorporate some of the shots of Palpatine's arrival...

So then it cuts to him walking to Padme's ship... more time has elapsed... and it really would help change the pace of the film.. not to mention solve the lightsaber problem.

EDIT

So I've finished part II and part III. I decided, becuase of youtube's time requirements, to separate the talking from the beinning of this and make that part II and the fighting part III.

Interestingly enough, I found a few things worth editing from the conversation and it works really well, you almost don't notice the changes.

You can download it here:

Part II version 4

You can view it on youtube here:

Part II version 4 On Youtube

List of changes from Part II

(This picks up directly where the last one left off)

01) The reaction that Anakin gives when Padme says that Obi-Wan wants to help them after telling him that "He knows" is best described as... sheepish and girly. Watching it, I couldn't help but wonder what the fuck Haydn was thinking and why it was left in there lol...

It's such a strange reaction "He wants to help you." Anakin smiles almost like he's just been told Obi-Wan loves him lol... and his head kinda bobs, he looks down, then his eyes look back up... it's just a HORRIBLE reaction. So I replace it with a shot from earlier of him simply looking down. I also shorten the amount of time on the shot.

02) I remove the extended close up of Padme lying lifeless on the ground and instead cut from Obi-Wan glancing down at her body to the shot of Anakin saying his line "You turned her against me!"

03) I remove Anakin saying "If you're not with me-" and simply leave "Then you're my enemy.

04) I remove the ironic line "Only a sith deals in absolutes" and leave "I will do what I must."

End of Part II

Part III, I had a bit of trouble with. I'm still tweaking bits and pieces so let me know what you all think.

You can download it here:

Part III version 1

You can view it on YouTube here:

(Not yet)

Changes made to Part III

(This jumps in right where part II leaves off)

01) I remove some of the redundant and faulty shots of Anakin and Obi-Wan fighting showing Padme' not where she is.

02) Cut to Yoda and Palpatine fighting

03) Cut back to Obi-Wan and anakin fighting on mustafar after Sidious snarl

04) I changed where this cut to the fighting in the middle of the room sequence begins so the musical change isn't so quick.

05) I replace the shot of them destroying the console

06) I cut from right after Obi-Wan gets kicked in the face to Yoda jumping down to fight sidious

07) I cut early from when yoda falls on a senator pod.

08) Cut to Sidious pulling a pod from the housing

09) Cut to the second half of the yoda shot showing yoda looking up at the pod

10) Cut to the pod being thrown and yoda stopping it

11) I remove the show of sidious laughing this goes to sidious jumping and looking around for yoda

12) CUt to Obi-Wan and Anakin fighting on the balancing part with the raw sfx from the mixups on starwars.com, and the DOTF from my complete score. Cut early as Obi-Wan jumps down

13) Cut to Yoda jumping up to fightin Sidious.

14) I decided to move Yoda falling back to the original placement.

I change the order of the shots though, showing Yoda's coat falling.

15) Cut to Palpatine dangling and laughing

16) Cut to Yoda looking up at the coat

17) Cut back to mustafar with some of the footage from the volcano explosion sequence to add more to this. (Heroes Collide music layered with raw sfx from mashups)

18) CUt to Anakin hitting obi-wan and the rest of the "Heroes Collide" sequence finishes.

19) I repeat a shot of Obi-wan and anakin struggling (but flipped) with just sfx playing

20) Cut to an exterior Senate chambers shot from Episode II with sfx from a deleted scene in Episode III the apropriate music playing to go into

21) Interior shot of Palpatine being told that yoda is mising.

22) Cut some of Palps lines to show him looking off in the distance.

23) Cut to Yoda crawling and only saying "Hurry"

24) Bail saying his lines

25) cut to yoda opening the hatch and jumping into Bails ship.

26) Cut to an exterior shot of mustfar from when the planet is first shown with the apropo music playing and sfx layared.

27) cut to Obi-Wan and anakin fighting and their lightsabers being forced down onto the arm

28) cut to a shot of the volcano erupting.

29) Cut to the shot of the lava flowing ontop of the arm.

30) splice the two shots of the arm failing together (because of the removal of the volcano shot)

31) movement of the two sequences together of the arm floating in the lava. The music is also fixed for this.

32) Shortening of a shot of Obi-Wan watching the arm go over the falls.

33) Shortening of a shot of the droid that Anakin lands on being confused.

34) cutting earlier to Obi-Wans line saying "I have failed you."

35) Cutting early to Anakins line "The Jedi are Evil"

37) Cutting early to Anakin's line "This is the end for you my master."

38) Removal of a shot of anakin floating and cutting early to his line "You underestimate my power."

39) removal of a shot of Obi-Wan reacting to Anakin's jump.

40) adding a shot of Anakin looking up at OBi-Wan

41) Cut to Obi-Wan saying "You were my brother Anakin."

42) Cut to Anakin saying "I hate you."

43) Cut to Obi-Wan walking away and picking up the lightsaber.

44) CUt to Anakin catching on Fire

ENd of Part III... there was a small error I have to fix... but I got the fight to just under 10 minutes...not bad... I cut out something like...5 minutes if I remember right...

Hey guys, I'd love to see your edits, unfortunately I don't have a megaupload account and I keep maxing out my free downloads from there... I'll have to wait till tomorrow to see some of your great edits.

As far as the jumping back and fourth you mentioned, Jedi_jra, I have fixed that. I decided against cutting around so much and simply let the sequence finish out... mostly because there wasn't a place to put some of the footage. I'm still tempted to cut out Yoda climbing through the tubes and escaping. I've thought about actually completely removing that sequence but it would be near impossible to jump from them struggling with their arms holding each-others arms... and then somehow jump to them fighting. I thought about inserting that punch that Anakin does to Obi-Wan, but then you'd see it twice and I didn't like that.

However, I have taken all you have said and gone back and done this edit of my ideas (not the anakin over the waterfall. I'm still not 100% convinced, but again, i haven't been able to watch most of the videos.)

Anyways, you can download my video here:

Part II version 2

The list of the changes:

----

This picks up right were Part I finishes. It includes the dialog between Padme and Anakin and Obi-Wan. I'm tempted to remove the dialog from my video because I'd like to put it on YouTube, but Its over 10 minutes just of the battle so... but it would be left as is in the film... I don't see too much wrong with it.

I'm also tempted to remove some of the battle on the landing area because if you look, there is an error. They start battling and Padme is clearly lying on the ground. There are some close ups, then it's as if they start over and Padme is now missing... they move away to the edge and so fourth... So I'm considering editing some of this to fix this

-----

01) It cuts early from the battle on the mustafar landing pad to Yoda and Palpatine still battling in the Senate Chambers.

02) After Palpatine strugles it cuts to Mustafar again

03) As they move into the main Separatist War Room, I cut from them entering the room, to the sequence of them fighting in the middle of the room.

04) I replace the shot of them destroying the console with the same from a different angle used earlier when they first enter the room.

05) It cuts early from Mustafar to Coruscant after Obi-Wan gets kicked in the face

06) I cut from Yoda falling on one of the senate pods, to Palpatine pulling another one out to hurl at him.

07) It quick cuts back to Yoda looking up.

08) Then back to Palpatine who throws the pod. Yoda stopping the pod is the same, the close up of his face is the same.

09) I remove the shot of Palpatine laughing and wiping his face and instead stay on Yoda, cutting to a slightly further out shot of yoda spinning the pod.

(In an ironic twist of fate, when I made my complete score, I had a choirless Duel of the Fates, but in Episode III, they recorded new vocals and in order to capture/use the vocals, i had to layer the choirless instrumental with the DVD rip. IN doing so, I introduced slight SFX that you don't really notice on the album, but since I used them here to re-sync the music, they actually add to the scene and sound natural this way rather than being pure music)

10) It cuts from Palpatine looking around for Yoda to the Mustafar high-wire battle. This has DOTF layered over the SFX only rip from the starwars.com mashups.

11) As Obi-Wan leaps down away from Anakin, it cuts back to Coruscant and Yoda leaps up to the pod to battle Palpatine.

12) I change the sequence of the shots of Yoda Falling and also shorten the overall length. I cut from Yoda on the ground to his cape falling.

13) I then cut to Palpatine dangling in the air.

14) Then to Yoda looking up at the coat

15) We jump back now to Mustafar. Since Obi-Wan jumping down onto the arm is where we left off, the rest of the "Heroes Collide" sequence is really short. I lengthen this by taking some from before the arm has the large lava explosion.

I take a few of the shots in sequence and put them here, layering the SFX only from starwars.com mashups with the cue "Heroes Collide."

16) The cut back into the true heroes collide sequence starts when Anakin hits Obi-Wan

17) I extend this by looping and flipping an early angle of the two struggling (I may need to shorten the beginning of this a bit).

18) I cut to an exterior shot of the Senate Chambers at night from Episode II, with new raw Coruscant audio of speeders flying from a deleted scene from Episode III, with the correct Episode III music layered underneath to lead into--

19) Cut to interior senate chamber of the troops reporting they cannot find Yoda's body.

20) I cut out Palpatines line that "Vader is in Danger," and cut directly to him looking off in the distance.

21) Cut to Yoda crawling in the tube. I shorten this by only having him say "Hurry."

22) Cut to Senator Organa in his speeder saying his line.

23) Cut to yoda getting to the junction from which he can escape. This plays out as it does in the film.

24) Cut back to mustafar. Mustafar exterior shot from earlier in the film when we see it for the first time as the separatists speak to sidious.
Raw Mustafar SFX replace the film ones with correct music playing underneath.

25) Cut to a few unused shots of them fighting from the "Heroes Collide" sequence, with raw SFX underneath from the mashups.

26) Cut to the two fighting and getting their sabers pushed onto the arm from the Volcano Explosion sequence. (Correct music layered over it.)

27) Cut to a shot of a volcanic eruption normally used in a few moments with raw SFX from the trailer, music layered over it

28) Cut to the lava falling onto the arm and the two running for Cover.

--normal placement of eruption

29) Cut to the long shot of the arm breaking free. The next few shots remain the same until

30) Cut to a shot from latter of the arm floating in the river with the music resynced to fit the transition.

31) Removal of a few seconds of Obi-Wan looking on as the arm falls over the cliff (music resynced)

32) Removal of a few seconds of Anakin standing on the droid as it freaks out confused. (Music resynced)

33) Removal of a few seconds of dead air time to cut to Obi-wan's line "I have Failed you."

34) Removal of a few seconds and a bit of dialogue from Anakin so he just says "The Jedi Are Evil" instead of "From my point of view the Jedi are evil" because it's OBVIOUSLY his point of view.

35) Removal of a few seconds to get to anakins line "This is the end for you my master"

36) I cut the shot (a few seconds) between Obi-Wan's line "I have the high ground," and Anakin's line "You underestimate my power."

37) I cut the shot between of Obi-wan flinching between the shots of Anakin Jumping and Anakin flying, right before Obi-wan cuts anakin down.

38) I restructure this sequence. The first cut adds a shot of Anakin looking up to Obi-Wan and then back to Obi-Wan as he says "You were my brother anakin. I loved you." (The music has been resynced)

39) This cuts to Anakin saying "I hate you." (The music has been resynced)

40) This cuts to Obi-Wan walking away, and picking up the lightsaber and turning back around.

41) This then cuts to Anakin catching on fire as obi-wan watches. (The music has been resynced)

End of Part II

---------

I just watched your edit, Marvolo, and I'm liking the idea better. There's not much changed but enough that the continuity is there...the problem is finding the correct climax musically and stylistically. I like that you kept the erruption at the end and then cut to him leaving. I liked that idea and when I did it on my video, I thought it was cool myself hehe...

Anyways, I'm going to have a go at it, using your idea as a framework.

I only left it because I liked what it showed of the arm and the arms position on the lava-fall. You get a real sense that it's gone over the cliff.

2. Not really a nit pick but when you pull away from the falls after Anikan has fallen down the falls you can see the structure still floating down the lava river in the background. This can be removed with Adobe After Effects.

I was just throwing it together to see what it would look like. I don't have Adobe After Effects (wish very greatly that I did lol)... so that would be the job of... someone else lol

3. After you have the shot that pulls away from the lava fall I would cut Obi-Wan's reaction shots and go straight to volcanoe erupting shot and then to Obi-Wan approaching the ship. The reason for this is because you already have two reaction shots from Obi-Wan before you have the pull out shot and don't really need two more. If you don't want to remove these shots at least get rid of or replace the last shot of Obi-Wan where he is holding his ignited lightsaber right before the volcanoe shot. It just doesn't flow naturally with the other reaction shots, because they are close up facial shots and that is a full body shot. I understand the emotion that is supposed to be portrayed by Obi-Wan's body stance, but it feels awkward among the other reaction shots.

As you said, there are several good reaction shots... I included all of them to test them all... have them all IN the video and then narrow it down to the ones likes, or the ones preferred.

Again, just tossing it together.

Personally, after watching it again, I'm really not that big of a fan of the music track I chose. I WAS trying to find something of Battle of the Heroes, but there isn't much that conveys the emotion I was going for. Leaving the music intact for the most part would work, but it would have to end abruptly... and then somehow transition to the second half of "The Immolation Scene" without being too awkward.

And no one commented on the edits I did in the end of this sequence lol

Well, I will certainly give it an attempt.

First, I've been toying with some ways to pull out of the fight and back to Coruscant.

The first was by adding a shot of the Senate building, but I felt it was too abrupt so I decided to add a shot of a volcano erupting from latter. I then take the two parts from around the volcano erupting latter and push them together

I made two short clips to show these ides. I'm curious what you all think:

Senate shot

EDIT:

Ignore the Volcano eruption, I Found that in the first trailer there is an alternate angle shot of them struggling I think I'll just add that instead, THEN cut to the senate shot.

What do you all think of the Senate shot and the order from there?

--

Because I had used the volcano shot from latter in the sequence for earlier, I removed it from latter so as not to have it repeat. Here, in this video, I have the shot removed, and the shot before and after pushed together. I think I may leave it this way.

Also after the arm drops, in the film it cuts back to curuscant, but since I took care of that, I simply pushed the shot before and the shot of the arm floating from after Yoda together. What do you all think of that?

Lava float

---

The question about him going over the cliff and all is nice... but I'm curious because why would we want to show that he survived it at all... wouldn't it be better to simply say he didn't... it would be more correct continuity wise with the original trilogy... saying Anakin died.

I also made an attempt at doing an edit of what you asked. I'm still working on it. Let me know what you think:

Anakin Goes Over Lava-fall
