Episode 3 - Editing Back in Progress (* unfinished project *)
Time
I know this is the third post in a row, but I've managed to remake the edit faster than I thought It would take me...

Here's what I have so far (I cut off the beginning again because it's not important. The video is so long as it is.) There are 2-3 little errors wher eyou can see for a frame or so another shot that's not suppose to be there... but let me know what you think

Episode 3 - Editing Back in Progress (* unfinished project *)
Time
its gonna take a little longer. I contacted the program support people and they said they don't officially support DIVX... so since it no longer works... that just means the program no longer supports it...

So I'm re-ripping the video into another video format and have to re-edit it...which isn't TOO bad because I can do that pretty easily... I have a temp video I'm going to upload to give you all an idea of where I'm going and what I've changed and what I'm going to change further.

You can view it here:

The Fight

Here are a list of the changes I made (I will also note the changes I'm going to make further)

The video picks up right as they begin fighting (this is because I made this simply to see how the flow was...I had no intention on this being what I show you all but it'll have to do until latter.

1) I cut out the last few moments of the beginning the fight, and jump to Yoda and Sidious who are still fighting. I leave this sequence alone until sidious is yelling.

I cut out the last portion just because it slows down the fight and makes it really hard to cut to anything, so instead I cut mid fight to something else mid fight... it helps keep the tension.

2) I cut to Anakin and Obi-Wan fighting through the halls and into the man room.

3) I cut to them fighting in the middle of the room. This goes on until they fling eachother across the room and Anakin jumps at Obi-Wan.

You'll notice that I removed a few segments such as them on the table. I couldn't understand how they got into that room and how they'd get out lol... just doesn't make sense to me... hence why I simply combine the part from before the room scene to the fight of them in the middle of the main hall just to move things along faster.

4) I replace the shot of them destroying the console with a duplicate (alternate angle) shot of them destroying the console from the sequence of when they first enter the main hall. The next few shots are the same as the original sequence would have them.

5) I cut early from Anakin and Obi-Wan to Yoda and Sidious... instead of leaving some open time as in the original, I cut from right after Anakin hits obi-wan in the face to the yoda fight. This removes Obi-Wan walking around in pain and Anakin walking up to him and moves the music along perfectly as well. When I did the complete score for episode III,this is one of the segments that was extended past what it normally is and I think it's because the original edit may have been this way too.

6) The Yoda-Sidious sequence is the same up until Sidious throws one of the pods straight at yoda. I cut out sidious laughing, and layer this with my music from my score edit rip, re-syncing it to fit slightly better. It fades back to how it is in the film when Sidious sees the pod coming at him.

7) I cut early from Sidious looking around for Yoda to Anakin and Obi-Wan fighting/balancing on one of the pylons. I use a rip of the clean audio from the mashups on Starwars.com and replace the music with more music from the Episode III version of DOTF. I stay with this until Obi-Wan jumps down.

8) Cut back to Yoda jumping up at Sidious. The two fight and are blown from each-other by the shock wave

---Here I am thinking about reinserting Yoda slipping. As you watch, look for where I put it... The problem becomes there are only a few moments where you can cut to yoda and sidious and the problem is that where I have Yoda calling for Organa edited here, which was just a test to see if it would work, doesn't work... it breaks the emotion. I'll explain where I think it should go. I think I should show Yoda fall here seeing the coat come down.

9) Cut back to Obi-Wan and Anakin Fighting. The opening of this is from when they are walking down one of the pylons that would then break off from a magma explosion. Instead, I cut to them as they fight and "Heroes Collide."

Again I use the clean audio from the mashps and replace the music here with "Heroes Collide."

10) I then cut here to Yoda falling. I cut most of this to shorten it. The coat falls, Yoda looks up. (In this version, I'd moved the video of Yoda looking up too soon. It was meant to be, yoda falls, the coat drops, then Yoda Looks up.

---- This I'm thinking of moving back to #8 and instead, cutting to Palpatine in his pod with the troopers announcing Yoda is missing. Then it would cut to yoda in the shaft saying "Hurry! Careful Timing we will need!" then to Organa saying "Activate blah blah" I would then cut to Yoda climbing into the area where he opens the hatch, activates the beacon, and then jumps into Organa's ship... as they sail away it would then cut to --

11) We cut back to the part of them fighting on the pylon, but both lightsabers are down on the ground. They turn to see the lava explode and then run for cover.

12) This cuts directly to the final fighting segment, as they float along the river of Lava.

-- I'd like to cut the shot of Obi-Wan watching the thing go over the cliff and just instead cut to Anakin running down the shaft and then jumping onto the droid.

--I'd also cut out half, if not the entire shot of the droid looking around confused.

13) I cut a portion of them standing around looking at each-other and cut almost directly to Obi-Wan's dialogue "I have failed you."

14) I cut part of Anakins line "In my point of view The Jedi are Evil" because it's like DUR...of course it's your point of view...and Lucas was really beating that idea home too much. So instead the conversation is "I should have known the Jedi were plotting to take over." "Anakin, the Chancelor is Evil!" "The Jedi are Evil!"

15) This then has a minor mess up but should cut almost directly to Anakin's line "This is the end for you my Master."

--I might tighten some of the edits of Anakin jumping and Obi-Wan cutting him and the slide so it moves a bit faster.

16) After Obi-Wan picks up the lightsaber, I remove Anakin saying "I hate you" and instead I cut to him looking at Anakin and saying "You were my brother Anakin. I loved you."

17) This cuts to Anakin saying 'I hate you"

18) This cuts back to Obi-Wan looking on sadly as the rest of this sequence plays out.

19) In this edit, I attempted to move the Yoda portions to after the battle as not to slow it down but it breaks the emotional flow of the film, and if it were after they leave mustafar then I couldn't cut to Yoda at Polis Mossa so I couldn't place it there, so I'm moving it back earlier in the edit.

Here I cut most of Yoda in the tube to simply him saying "Hurry!" Which then cuts to Senator Organa saying his lines. Then to Palpatine in his pod. I'm going to switch Palpatine to be first in this though, I also have removed his line about Vader, but still have a slight glance over his shoulder at the end.

20) This then cuts back to Mustafar as Obi-Wan gets on board. I cut Padme's lines. He touches her on the shoulder, she moans, he moves his hand to her face, then she passes out again and he leaves to the cockpit.

This ends my edit. Part 3 would be after this... For those of you familiar with how I edited it before, it cuts from this to the establishing shot of Polis Mossa, then shows Yoda meditating. I use that as a vehicle for showing Padme's demise, Qui-Gon's message to Yoda, and then also show a brief shot of Anakin crawling only to be interrupted by Senator Organa. It's a cool sequence.

Let me know what you all think of the changes I made and have mentioned I will make.

The AOTC clip worked well, however, the shot of the pramanade went by so quick it was very jarring. I think you could easily leave the shot out all together.

I was kinda afraid of leaving out the promanade shot because I felt that since its the first time we've seen that space in the day time, people might not know exactly where it is. So I left just a hint of that establishing shot in. I didn't think it was too short but perhaps it is... I was trying to only leave a little, removing most of the camera movement... that's kinda why it's short.

2) Instead of cutting to Mustafar as Obi-Wan enters his ship, it cuts back to a shot of Padme sitting on the couch, her head hanging.

This works extremely well. However, going back to the shot of the pramanade is, again, very jarring. Why is Obi's ship just sitting there? I think it works well to end the scene with the shot of Padme. We see her thinking about all that Obi Wan has told her, and then, in the very next scene, we see what she has decided to do.

My first change to this sequence was always the removing of the cut back to Mustfar, and replacing it with her sitting there thinking. Also, I knew I wanted to move the establishing shot (reverse it) and place it at the end so that it pulled away...sort of showing how alone she is. Obviously, I can't animate OBi-Wan's ship so that's why it sits there... if I could, I would have it fly away lol...

I see what you mean in both cases though...

4) As the ship exits frame, I insert 2 new shots:
- The first from Episode III during the exchange between Padme in her residence and Anakin in the Jedi Temple
- The second from Episode I showing the elapse of time
(The film then cuts back in at the establishing shot of the Senate Building)

These shots flow into each other well. It feels very natural. Nicely done!

Glad you liked it. I went through several versions, pulling out shots from all three films and trying to figure out the best way to do it. Originaly, I had a version where, instead of showing the Jedi Temple from the psychic exchange, it showed Padme's residence... which had a slight zoom in to it, but when I reversed it, it pulled out obviously... but I thought it might be more apropro showing the temple alone in the distance, no longer smoking... reminding us that Padme was going to see Anakin, and what Anakin had done.

10) I cut the line "You cannot stop me. Darth Vader will become more powerful than you or I etc." through to Yoda's line about having too much faith in his apprentice and the dark side.

Yes yes! Moving straight to the fight actually works better in this case. I wish there was a way to take out Yoda's flip...

I always wanted to keep his line "You cannot stop me," just to show his arrogance, but I couldn't cut to anything except yoda jumping at him which by then, it would seem too late for him to pull out his lightsaber and even then, I'd have nothing to cut to so I had to remove the whole speaking section.

Part 2 is being delayed because I did a windows update and now in my editing program, it won't let me see the video aspect of the videos (I can hear the audio) but I can't see the video.. .which, needless to say, makes video editing quite difficult... lol

Even then, I can't export anything except audio.

It's pretty much done and I'd REALLY love to get some input from you guys on how I re-edited the whole battle sequence becuase I completely re-did that and I'm really happy with how it flows.

I'll keep you updated.

EDIT: I have included the YouTube Link now.

hey guys, it's been a while since I've posted anything in this thread but I thought I'd bring this up.

I decided that I thought I'd give this a try again. I'm going to take my stuff, however, and put it on youtube as well seeing as I have an account and it'll be worthwhile having up there.

I have broken my editing up into several parts...

Right now I've only finished part 1 and I thought You all might be interested in what I did.

First I recommend downloading it which you can do from here:

Part I

Or watch it here:

Youtube

Things I changed:

1) I moved an establishing shot from Episode II of Padme's Residence to the beginning of this sequence, cutting into the normal film late in, just enough to show the pramanade.

2) Instead of cutting to Mustafar as Obi-Wan enters his ship, it cuts back to a shot of Padme sitting on the couch, her head hanging.

3) This then wipes to Padme at the landing pad for her ship (removing the mustafar sequence).

4) As the ship exits frame, I insert 2 new shots:
- The first from Episode III during the exchange between Padme in her residence and Anakin in the Jedi Temple
- The second from Episode I showing the elapse of time
(The film then cuts back in at the establishing shot of the Senate Building)

5) I replaced one of the background screens on Mustafar as Anakin and Palpatine speak (removing the bit of Padme's ship comming into orbit.

6) I then cut to Palpatine in his office rather than staying on Mustafar. I dunno what Padme was flying in the film, but that thing is FAST and got to Mustafar within minutes! lol (The showing of more time passing and back to palpatines office helps give a sense of more time elapsing as well, giving reality to the length of time it would take to get from the Galactic Core to an outer system world like Mustafar lol)

7) I take one of Yoda's lines "Emperor" and layer it as he walks in, as if he announces his presence, startling the guards that he then knocks down.

8) I remove the line of "I hear a new apprentice you have 'Emperor.'" and just cut to "Or should I call you, Darth Sidious."

9) When Yoda is knocked down, seeing as the fight on Mustafar hasn't begun, I jump to Palpatine getting up from his chair and speaking with Yoda.

10) I cut the line "You cannot stop me. Darth Vader will become more powerful than you or I etc." through to Yoda's line about having too much faith in his apprentice and the dark side.

11) Cut to Palpatine bringing out his lightsaber.

12) Cut to Yoda beginning the fight.

13) I cut from the fight to the establishing shot from earlier in the film of Mustafar and Anakin standing on the promanade.

14) I restructure this by resyncing the video to the music.

15) I slowed down the last few moments so that the final shot of anakin brooding was longer.

16) I layer the SFX of the computer showing Padme's ship arriving.

17) Cut to the shot of the computer showing her ship arriving.

18) I cut a few seconds out of the landing seqeunce from before we see padme in the ship as it is slowly landing, and also from right after that shot, as to speed up the landing of her ship.

Again, this is only part I ... it'll be on youtube in a minute. I'm uploading it now and will post a link.

Let me know what you all think!

I'm sorry but I didn't like eaither of the count dooku edits.

For one, I believe that showing anakin killing him so willingly... but then try to argue that he shouldn't have done that is... strange... the lack of emotion in him as he argues it is also very obvious...

It's like "why are you even bothering to say it..."

I personalyl prefer him being told to...

Also, for some reason, the 2nd one is sped up (the longer version). It... the music is distractingly out of tune... did you speed up the video?

the last one is good but has the same removing of the argument... it has more which is good but there is no hesitation...

I never realized how much time is wasted and dead air there is as they walk to the chancellor... wow... lol you should try adding the last held note of the music from "The Elevator Scene" to it since thats where it was intended to go... it would help shorten that silence. heh

1980 Empire RSO 2 LP set (Released)
Time
I was about to offer my services on cleaning the audio if you'd all like.

I'm not sure if you're all aware, but the LP rips as far as I've heard, sound sooo much superior to the other releases. The Anthology has a lot of hiss, and the SE has a lot of problems...

For one, the ESB tracks are slightly faster than they should be... bad digital transfer...

Also, one of the editors flipped channels on all the cues he edited... not all the channels, just the horn channels... which makes it IMPOSSIBLE to reverse. I've wanted to go back and clean this score and re-master it CORRECTLY... but I havn't found a good LP rip yet. I was going to offer my services in this if you are all interested but it seems you all have it covered.

I'm watching this thread very anxiously because I want to see what the final product is like. I guess it's my ignorance of how this forum works, but Iknow you all said that you have the torrents up. Do I simply look for Empire Strikes back on Utorrent or something? If someone in the know could help me, that would be greatly appreciated. I would also offer to host the files myself to alleviate this torrent business. I say that because I'd like to use this to make a new set. so again... if someone in the know could pm me about this... I'd love to be of some help.

New Clone Wars Trailer!
Time
Personally I hope it'll cover Grevious' rise to power. That's something that was completely left out of the story... start from the battle of Geonosis... and Grevious who he was before he became mechanical...and then cover the entire clone wars all the way to Episode III.

THat's what I'm hoping to see.

I'm also noticing that Padme didn't talk at all in the trailer. I guess they havn't casted a voice actor for her yet lol...

I do like the camera angles... very George LUcas. You can tell he was involved in at least some of those shots heh

Star Wars Prequels/Original Trilogy: The Complete Scores (Released)
Time
So I have some... interesting news...

I probably shouldn't say where, but I found two pieces of two cues that were until now, escaping my complete score trap.

::cue into the trap:: lol

Anyways, I've FINALLY found a clean intro to "Padme Meet Anakin" of disc 1 of my set. Problem is it is mono... I've layered it so that very little has to be used... only a few seconds.

I've also found a completely unused/unreleased horn intro for "Droid Fight" (a cue also on disc 1). BOth of these have been updated and corrected and are now ready to be downloaded separately to eaither augment or replace what was in the set already.

I also had to extend one part in Padme Meets Anakin to be the correct length...

You can download them on my site heh

Star Wars Episode III - how the fans would want it (* unfinished project? *)
Time
I'd check out my profile on youtube... BrachioInGen... it has my original attempts at adding music into the scenes as it had been intended. Of course, being on a dvd these would be better, more professional quality lol...

Here are the ones for Episode III

Boys Into Battle (Original Opening)
The Elevator Scene (Unused music) * The R2 scene
General Grevious Flees (Partially Unused music)

yes.... that scene was suppose t have music...

Actually, the last few moments of the music that plays when they land in the hangar bay is misplaced... it's suppose to go about a minute latter after R2 connects to the computer and brings up the display of the Invisiable Hand... then it's suppose to be near solid music until they arrive wher ethe chancellor is...

When I say removal of Vader I mean removal of vader. There is another thread in this area that speaks to the idea of removing vader and leia from the edit and I posted some links to videos I had made... my hope was to create an edit that, if a new child watched the movies in order, they wouldn't know that Vader was Anakin, or that Luke had a sister... I can outline those changes if you're interested...

Time
hmm... as for for that particular scene, I dunno what I could do... it woudl be an awkward and quick edit if I removed the setting of the battle droids on fire by R2, on top of that, there is music that plays under that (or there will be when I do the edit).

As for the droids, I may remove some of their voices... maybe if I replaced the dialogue with a robotic noise? I'd have to see if they voices are echoed in all the channels... if so, it'll be problematic... I have a german rip, but I'll loose a bit of quality momentarily for that... So I coudl still do it.. just more work :-p

As for the Vader scenes,I'm removing them... that's the other thing about this edit is I'd like to remove any thing that gives away details from the original trilogy.... Vader, Leia, and I guess even that Yoda scene for the same reason...

some good ideas though... Maybe I could find some robotic nosie and just add a caption or something...

I don't like that scene... lol... personally I don't think it was ever needed... the music is nice, but it's used earlier in the film (the correct placement) when Yoda leaves Kashyyk...

I'll think about it... but I think it reveals too much... do we need to know where Yoda goes. He says he's going into hiding and exile... we find out two films latter he's still alive and where Luke needs to go to see Yoda... I dunno... I hadn't thought about it really...

Star Wars Episode III - how the fans would want it (* unfinished project? *)
Time

Well, like everyone here, I’ve kinda decided to do a version of Episosode III that I would be happy with.

Some changes:

  1. All I have to say about the opening scorll is “War?!” …what is it good for? Absolutely nothing :-p
So the opening scroll will be re-worked.

  2. I want to see if I can’t re-edit some of the opening sequence to shorten it because I’m sorry but, it gets a little lengthy and has very slow paced shots when it should have more, shorter shots.

  3. I want to see if I can’t include any of the unused material aboard the Invisable Hand. One thing I will re-insert is the opening to the cue “Grevious Flees” into the final film mix. I don’t know why it was obmitted. I might even insert an extra line by one of the droids cut in the final film mix.

  4. Going down is such a cool scene but the way it ends is so awkard. I think I might remove a bit of the shit squeeling to a stop (sorry Steven Spielberg)

  5. Inserting of the deleted Rebellion underplot.

  6. Removal of the naming of Anakin to “Vader” and re-editing certain scenes to aid in such a usage… attempting to remove any mention of Vader really or of Leia.

One feature I’d like to include is the isolated score which I have a pretty complete version of the score, not to mention alternate versions of cues and complete versions and such.

Has anyone every attempted this before? Does such an edit of EPisode III exist already? If anyone has any suggestions or ideas of things to add, let me know. I’d very much be interested in hearing them. I’m not sure when I’ll finish this, but I’m going to start soon and work my way through the film.

If I ever did that, I think I'd go back and play with them... fix a few errors and such..

I used Windows Movie Maker before... so you can imagine the loss of quality. I now have a really great program and could go back and re-edit these and fix those errors... not to mention make a much better edit and save it as it's original quality... so... if I do ever decide to go back, I'll let you know.

Star Wars Prequels/Original Trilogy: The Complete Scores (Released)
Time
I don't go nor recommend going by JWfan cue sheets. No one EVER EVER EVER updates them. No matter how much I ask.

The film mix is noteably different. If you listen to the choir, when the strings come in at the end... it's quite different. Yes it's edited and layered in the beginning, and the percussive part may be the same recording, but the rest is not. My guess is that they recorded the percussive part (instrumental) separately... and then layered the other parts (strings/full orch), (Choir), (Ewoks) over it... I dont' think they expected to release it as they had... in what would create three versions, but there are now three:

1) Ewoks singing along and then choir takes over
2) Choir (album)
3) Choir film

Check out my set and listen to that cue and you can hear these differences. As for what it means by "Film Version Without Orchestration," I'm not sure.

I'd also read this page and check out the bottom:

Return of the Jedi
