Troy - for all your Trojan needs
Time
I totally agree about the demythologising of Troy. Most of the movie was pretty good, not great. The thing that really bugged me was that the gods were not talked about. I don't need the gods to be played by actors, but this was a society where everything was correlated to their gods. It would be like making a movie about Jedis and never talking about the force. One guy in Troy talked about the gods being angry at the Greeks for destroying Apollo's Temple and he seems to be treated like he's a religious nut. If I were one of the Greeks, I would be pissed at Achilles for angering Apollo. Apollo is not a god that you would want against you.
My other main problem was that the Trojan War took ten years while the span of the movie was about two weeks. Also, the love story didn't work. Other than than that, it wasn't a bad movie.

Who has caved?
Time
I haven't bought them yet. I did rent Return of the Jedi so that I could see what Lucas said about inserting Hayden and so I could discuss the change with all the evidence, but I had a free rental at Blockbuster and didn't actually pay for it. I've only seen the Return of the Jedi and the bonus disk(which was included with Return of the Jedi when I rented it.) I have a friend that is has them and can copy them for me for free, but I don't want them that way.

Empire of Dreams - what was your imagined Star Wars story...
Time
Darth Simon, I think making the PT into one story would have been a great idea. Lucas would never have the guts to do it. He wanted to stick to the the formula rather than try something new. Before Lord of the Rings, I can't think of anyone else doing three movies as one story.
Also, I agree that both Yoda's fate and Leia's parentage should be up in the air until the Original Trilogy. Maybe as a squadron of soldiers are bearing down on them, Yoda hands Luke to Kenobi and says something like, "Our only hope this one may be. Safe keep him you will. More fight do I still have this day." Then he can go jumping into battle whatever is coming with Amadala screaming giving birth to Leia in the background. That would preserve the shock of seeing Yoda alive and Leia as Luke's sister.
Rebel11_38, the only way to write Episode 3 to make it so the audience doesn't know Anakin is Vader is to give Kenobi another apprentice. You can't have Anakin with "Sith Eyes", can't have the Anakin-Kenobi duel, or show Anakin alive after falling into the lava. You would have to have Anakin duel the other apprentice. The other apprentice would win and escape. He would have either never be seen again, run into the Emperor, or meet with a fate that could either kill him or force him into the suit. Kenobi will either think Vader is the other apprentice or force sense Vader is Anakin. Although, in order for this to really have worked as a movie, the other apprentice would have needed to be introduced in Episode 2.

Empire of Dreams - what was your imagined Star Wars story...
Time
I don't think we need a young actor trying to pretend to be Harrison Ford, so I came up with some basic changes that I would have made to the Prequals to make them work with the Original Trilogy and make them better movies.
1. Anakin should have been older in the Phantom Menace. I don't think quite Luke's age, but at least a teenager and someone close to Portman's age. It would make the council saying he is too old more sensible and make Kenobi a little reckless('so was I if you remember' from Empire) to train him. He even could have left the Jedi for a short time to train him. They would eventually relent and let him back in, but it would set up more tension between Kenobi and the council and show that Kenobi truly believed in Anakin.
2. Rule of Two. Silly. No need. If Yoda and Mace's conversation had paid off in some way so that they were actively pursuing Darth Maul's master, then I would say leave it in. However, they didn't do anything with the line, so it is there just to mess with Empire Strikes Back.
3. The Clone Wars should be completely different. In New Hope, when Kenobi talks about the Clone Wars and Luke reacts, it sounded fascinating. That is what I wanted to see most when I heard they were making the Prequals. As it is now, it is basically galaxy-wide governmental repression. Not interesting.
4. Jedis can't get married. Quite possibly the stupidest concept Lucas came up with. Why can't Jedi get married? Because Lucas couldn't find any other reason for keeping Anakin and Amadala apart. Why do they need to be apart anyways?
5. Anakin should have been completely evil by the end of the end of the second movie. The Anakin-Kenobi duel could have been the beginning of the third movie. Anakin, now in the suit, could have then done the Jedi Purge almost completely himself and there would be no need to introduce General Grevous or any other character. I realize I'm criticizing a movie I haven't seen yet, but I'd rather see Darth Vader in action than on the sidelines while a new character has all the fun of killing all the Jedi.

If you like this, then you'll like this...
Time
This doesn't make any sense to me either. The only thing I can think of is that they both might be cable shows, so if you like to watch one cable show you might want to watch another cable show. Or, after seeing hot girls talking about sports, men may want to watch cute animals die horribly to combine sex and violence. I normally just pay no attention to those recommendations because they are so stupid.

The Top Ten
Time
Since someone is already trying make this top ten movies of this year, here's mine:
10. Bon Voyage(French espionage thriller)
9. Spartan
8. Maria Full of Grace
7. Supersize Me
6. Broken Wings(family drama from Israel)
5. Terminal
4. Incredibles
3. Hero
2. Before Sunset
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
I would give honorable mention to a few movies that were better than I expected them to be. They are
Butterfly Effect, Dawn of the Dead, Hellboy, I Robot, and Manchurian Candidate.
I haven't seen some of the big year end movies yet like Sideways, Million Dollar Baby, Aviator, Life Aquatic, Closer, or Hotel Rwanda, but the ones on my list are all recomendable.

LOTR
Time
The ROTK Extended Edition did a great job of giving more meat to the villians of the movie. The scene with Sarumon is back in and it is a great scene with another great performance by Christopher Lee. The Witch King is given a proper introduction and a few great scenes to make him a fully fleshed out character. In the theater, he just seemed to be some sadistic clone of Sauron. It hurt the scene where Eowyn kills him, one of my favorite scenes in the book. The Mouth of Sauron is another cool scene.

Director's Cuts?
Time
I will accept a Director's Cut if the director feels they have been screwed over by the studio interferance. Sometimes, the studio takes it out of the director's hands. I'll accept them as long as the other version is available to buy. However, I don't think I've ever seen a recent movie that has been improved. Apocalypse Now is a great exampple. Apocalypse Now is a masterpiece. Apocalypse Now Redux may now be the official version, but I think it is trashy and tries to explain an inexplicable war. I'll accept it because both versions are available on DVD.
I don't consider the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions to be Director's Cuts. I think they are a seperate class mainly because four+ hours in a movie theater is torturous(especially if there is no intermission) and not cost effective. Again, both versions are available on DVD.
In Lucas' case, the only studio interferance was that result of being overbudget and running past deadline. I guess he has the legal right to change them, but does he have the moral right? His changes are not changes because of studio interferance and most aren't because they didn't have the technology. My main problem with what Lucas is doing is not just that changes have been made to the masterpieces, but that the originals are no longer being produced and have not been put on the best technology available(DVD-for now). You can get them for places on the interenet, but they won't be there for too much longer.

Your number of visits to the cinema to go see the Star Wars films...
Time
Well, I was to younng to drive myself to the theaters for the original trilogies so only once for the first two and twice for Return of the Jedi. By Phanton Menace, I was working six days a week. I was able to see it in theaters two times. Attack of the Clones was so bad that I only watched it once in the theaters and only once since on video.

Director's Cuts?
Time
<This Rick McCallum guy who Lucas has producing the new movies is a no talent ass clown. Why doesn't he have someone like Spielberg or Zemekis in the seat?!?>
<One has to wonder what said directors REALLY think about Lucas>

I don't know Speilberg's position. Since he changed E.T., I'm guessing he's not going to say anything about Lucas.
You can find out Zemeckis' views on changing your film for DVD releases on the Back to the Future DVD. One of the extras is Zemeckis and Bob Gale(his writing and producing partner) in an interview recorded for the DVD at a college. While Zemeckis doesn't reference Lucas, he is asked if they changed anything in the movie for the DVD with which they had a problem. Zemeckis said while he did notice things that he didn't like, like wires when Christopher Lloyd is hanging from the clock towers, he said changing movies is stupid and they are a product of a certain time which should not be changed.

A Good Thing about Episode One
Time
I would definitely agree with you about how freedom led to some travesties, but it also led to some great movies like Wild Bunch and Godfather.
Metropolis is a great movie. Unfortuneatly, many of the great movies of the past are being pushed aside for the latest blockbuster at Blockbusters and other stores. Now people barely hear about great movies of the past and have to go through a lot to find them if they do hear of them. I'm not saying there aren't great movies coming out now, but most of the great ones are independent movies because studios are more concerned with the bottom line than with quality.

A Good Thing about Episode One
Time
I hope that asking if Metropolis is a Superman movie is a joke. If it is not, I fear we are going to lose great movies to a lack of interest since even intelligent people have not heard of the classics. Metropolis is one of the first and one of the great science fiction films. It was made in 1928 and is silent, but don't let that deter you from trying to find it. Great science fiction did not begin with Star Wars.
By the way, you all were talking about the Hayes code. The Hayes Code was basically the rating system with more bite. Between 1930's-1960's, you had to submit your script for approval to the censors. They would not allow cursing, suggestions of sex, violence, drugs, or anti-religious statements. They had bite for a while until some directors like Otto Preminger were willing to release movies without their approval. People would line up to see what they thought was going to be dirty, but found there was a whole lot more talk about sex than action. By the mid-60's, they had to stop with the Hayes Code and started the ratings system, which led to a lot more freedom in the movies.

Hellboy
Time
Return of the King is the only fantasy movie to ever win an Oscar in one of the top categories. They give the technical awards to fantasy/action/science fiction all the time. Terminator 2, Matrix, and Jurassic Park all won multiple awards in categories like special effects and sound. Going into last year's Oscar, it was obvious that Return of the King was going to win Picture and Director, but winning Adapted Screenplay was what shocked me. And yes, Fellowship should have won Picture instead of Return, especially since I consider Beautiful Mind(which beat Fellowship) to be trash and thought Mystic River(which lost to Return) to be great.
The Academy and other critics don't consider acting in fantasy, action, or comedy to be as important as drama. Some of that acting requires very little(Steven Seagal and Jean Claude Van Damme having careers is proof of that). However, there are great performances in those categroies that are every bit as good as the dramatic work the Academy and critics praise. They only nominated Ian McKellan(for Fellowship) out of the Lord of the Rings series while I think many of those actors, with a few exceptions, gave the performances of their careers and there should have been multiple acting nominations for each of those films. Same goes for Star Wars. Alec Guiness was nominated, but Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford also deserved nominations for the first two films. That was all I was saying about Ron Pearlman in Hellboy. He gave a performance that I think was better than just about any other actor could manage in that movie. If they gave the part to DeNiro, I think he may not have given as good a performance as Pearlman. That is what I meant by a performance on the level of performances of actors getting year end kudos.

Hellboy
Time
Well, obviously the Academy will not give an Oscar nomination to someone playing a red-colored super hero just like they would not give to one to a Hobbit. I'm saying that it is a great performance that goes beyond just looking right for the part and doing action sequences. He does both of those well, but he also does the emotional scenes better than a comic movie called Hellboy usually calls for.

I don't read many comic books, so I never knew about Hellboy until the movie came out. There have been some good comic book movies and I like Gulermo del Toro, so I went and saw the movie. I thought it was very well written and great visually with some good action set pieces. Ron Pearlman, a good actor in other things I've seen, delivers a performance that is on the level of performances of actors getting end of the year kudos, like Jamie Foxx in Ray.

I refer to the Extended Edition of Fellowship of the Ring as "My Precious" because it is the masterpiece of the three movies. After the Original New Hope and Original Empire Strikes Back, I would put the Extended Edition of Fellowship as the third greatest fantasy film ever. I thought the trilogy took some missteps in the other two films, especially in the characters/casting of Faramir and Denethor.

Myths
Time
That is a good point about evolution. Scientists have found fossils that they started calling the Hobbit because it was supposed to be a small proto-human. Now, they only found one of these. Why haven't they found more? How do we know it is an ancestor of humans and not just a short human? There are plenty of smaller stature people around now. Is this an evolution into a new species?

Myths
Time
I think these are conspiracies and plain lies, not myths.
I definitely agree about cold fusion experiments and Martin Bryant. The government conceals things from the general public all the time.
I've never seen evidence either way for the Moon landing. We were in the middle of a cold war when it happened, so I can definitely see why Kennedy and company would have faked it. If they did fake, it is kind of pathetic that we've never gotten as far as the moon.
Don't care about Princess Diana.
Prostitutes were killed. The police, with a lack of suspects, blamed it on one person which they named as 'Jack the Ripper'.
I would say that Oswald was involved in JFK's assassination, but there definitely was a conspiracy that involved him.
I have a new conspiracy theory involving Lucas and his reasons behind the Special Editions. I believe he is changing the movie enough so that he will eventually be able to justify changing the credits. Specifically, he wants to change the Editor credit.

Alexander
Time
I thought the movie was plain awful. I would give it half a star out of five. The trailer said that Alexander had conquered the known world be the age of 25. My questions for the movie were: 1. Who is this man that could do that? 2. How did he do it? The movie answers neither question.
Instead, we get many scenes of Alexander toasting to places he has conquered while not seeing him conquer them and many, many scenes of his troops rebelling against him. I learned virtually nothing of Alexander the man.
The first battle scene is a complete mess. It may be the worst directed battle scene I have ever seen. The second battle scene at least had some elephants to make it a little interesting. They should have dropped Anthony Hopkins' narration all together.
If Stone wanted to portray Alexander as homosexual or bisexual, that would be Stone's choice. However, Alexander seems to be bizarrly asexual. He didn't seem to be into Hephaistus even though Hephaistus was clearly into him. They may have had sex in the scenes after arriving at Babylon, but the movie didn't show whether Alexander wanted to or whether he just need a loyal friend. He only seemed to be interested in his wife to have an heir. At least we got to see Rosario Dawson's breasts. That was the best thing about the movie.

The Incredibles
Time
The first weeks grosses might have been slightly inflated(not more than a couple million) due to Star Wars fans, but I bet nobody left after the trailer, like the reports I heard when it was if front of Meet Joe Black. The Incredibles made $50 million its second week. That definitely was not from Star Wars fans going to see the trailer. Incredibles is a great movie for families who are starved for wholesome entertainment. That is why it is making so much money. I don't remember any Star Wars references, but there was a chase scene that reminded me of the bike chase scene in Jedi.
By the way, Raising Arizona, Life Less Ordinary, and O Brother Where Art Thou are Holly Hunter movies that are definitely worth renting.
