New Star Wars film coming out (Not Ep III)
Time
Sean, glad to hear you got your new avatar...I e-mailed Jay mine, but he said he's been having problems with quite a few of him, and suggested that he's getting tired of the current server.

BTW, this new movie sounds interesting...it's like an 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' for Star Wars fans. Besides, I haven't seen Christopher Lloyd on too much lately, so I'll definitely have to see it.

Bushido of Star Wars
Time
I love The Last Samurai! I just bought it yesterday, in fact. I watched Seven Samurai awhile back, since I had heard so much about it, and though three-and-a-half hours in subtitles can be tedious, it was a great film. Started watching The Hidden Fortress this weekend, but haven't finished it yet. I'm becoming a Kurosawa fan, it seems. Mostly, I'm into chivalry and Medieval Europe and what not, but I've spent a lot of time lately dwelling on how cool it would be if a fusion of bushido and chivalry existed...I'm definitely looking more into the Japanese code of bushido.

Here's a Hint of the Public's Reaction that the '04 DVDs would not be the OOT
Time
I heard back from Jay yesterday concerning contacting Criterion. This is what he said:

I actually have already sent Criterion a suggestion regarding the
trilogy. No response as of yet. Feel free to tell the other forum members to
send something if they like. They can mention the site if they want.

Perhaps we'll get some sort of response if several of us contact them within a short space of time. I'm already planning on doing so, and think it would be cool if others did too.

You're right, they should put him in an iPod ad. And I'm glad that he has his iPod now, because that makes everything better. I found a petition somewhere that was trying to get him a cameo in Episode III, but since only reshoots are left, I'll doubt we see him, which is a damned shame, because it might have suggested that Lucas at least marginally cares about the fans.

Ah, but if you do one, you have to do all three. But I have no doubt that if Criterion did try to release them, the set would be more than worth it.

Hot Rod: Criterion is a film preservation company that has managed to pull films out of the vaults over the years, restored the print, and released them to the public. They're more expensive than studio releases, but (though I haven't seen one yet) the DVDs are supposed to have superior quality over standard DVDs. Criterion's released many of Kurosawa's and Hitchcock's films, among others. (Okay, I take that back, I did see the Criterion version of Rebecca, now that I think about it).

Ralph Fiennes Officially Cast as Voldemort in HP4
Time
I just read this on Yahoo a few minutes ago...I'm curious to see how Fiennes does in the part:

Fiennes to Play Voldemort in Next 'Potter'

2 hours, 23 minutes ago

By ANTHONY BREZNICAN, AP Entertainment Writer

LOS ANGELES - He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has been named. Ralph Fiennes (news), who played memorable evil guys in "Red Dragon" and "Schindler's List," has signed on to portray the wicked warlock Voldemort in the next "Harry Potter (news - web sites)" movie, Warner Bros. announced Wednesday.

Voldemort is so bad that the magical characters in author J.K. Rowling (news - web sites)'s stories do their best not to speak his name aloud.

In the first three installments of the saga, a deadly magic spell meant for a baby Harry Potter backfired and deprived him of a body. So only his spirit wrought havoc in "The Sorcerer's Stone," "The Chamber of Secrets" and the recent "Prisoner of Azkaban."

But Voldemort finally returns in the flesh in part four: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire."

Filming has been under way on "Goblet" since June 25, mainly with star Daniel Racliffe as the boy-wizard, and co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson as his pals Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Fiennes has not yet filmed any scenes.

Other additions to the cast include Brendan Gleeson ("Troy," "The Village" and "Cold Mountain") as Potter's new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, the fearsome Mad-Eye Moody, and Miranda Richardson, ("The Crying Game," "Sleepy Hollow") as Rita Skeeter, a gossip columnist for a magical newspaper.

The cast also includes Robert Pattinson as Hogwarts student Cedric Diggory, Stanislav Ianevski as Quidditch star Viktor Krum, French actress Clemence Poesy as the heart-fluttering visiting student Fleur Delacour, and Katie Leung as Potter's love-interest and Quidditch rival Cho Chang.

"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," directed by "Four Weddings and a Funeral" filmmaker Mike Newell, is scheduled for theatrical release in November 2005.

The one thing she has always said to me is that she is grateful that I told her about the immaculate conception before she saw TPM. In my own twisted fashion, I kind of wish that I hadn't told her. It would have been fun to see her reaction once that popped up on screen. LOL!

I wonder how many friendships the Holiday Special has destroyed?

I for one actually enjoyed it...in the perverse way one can enjoy corny television. Wasn't great, but provided plenty of laughs, since I went in wanting very little out of it. Definitely a holiday tradition from now on, putting in my bootleg DVD of the special, and translating what the wookies are saying, and making fun of the whole thing. The key to it is keeping good humor while watching it.

I have made many friends here and it has transcended just star wars, but that was are starting point, all of us. r2, galahad, windexed, mio, rikter, magnolia, luke, bossk, darth sheba, klingon, warbler, etc. These are names of good friends I converse and share ideas with every day based on our common love of SW. This board is a source of enjoyment and it is here I believe I have found a home. That's cool to me.

All of this said, when I see someone ruining the place we hang out for friendship and worse still singling out some of my friends with hateful comments, I will defend them.

Jimbo, I do believe it is time you got IP banned from this board. And maybe there is a place for you where people find pleasure out of hateful comments and harsh criticism. But its not here, not with me, and apparently not with most of my friends.

Very well said, Obi-wonton.

I've got an e-mail out to Jay right now, seeing if he'll condone us contacting Criterion. It would be great if a number of us would be able to contact them and mention the petition and what not. If enough people communicate the desire that Criterion track down the originals, we have more of a chance of seeing them on DVD than if we just did nothing.

Talk about spreading hate

It's not hate, Jimbo. I've tried to be reasonable with you for awhile now. I've given you the benefit of the doubt on a lot of issues. But you've shown you won't change or respect the viewpoints of others. I don't particularly agree with the gay lifestyle, but you don't see me spewing hatred, because disagreement and hatred are two different things. I am a Christian, and Christians are supposed to love, and even though the typical Christian mindset these days is that 'God hates gays,' I find that to be in complete conflict with the Gospels, since love has always been the root Christian principal, though the Pat Robertsons and Jerry Falwells have done their best to skew that. I hope everyone can see the difference between disagreement and hatred in this situation, because I'm not trying to give anyone the wrong impression.

Jimbo, I have no problem with you expressing your opinion on these boards, but you do nothing but take those opinions and shove them at other people and tear those other people to shreds because you don't agree with them. You always seem to have something against new posters as well, and you've managed to scare away many of them. You are rude and hateful and we quite simply don't need it any more.

I've been a fan since the toys first hit pegs back in '77 and have seen them all in theaters (God only knows how many times).

A woman who truly appreciates Star Wars... I won't ask you to marry me, but can I, at the very least, get you to hang out with my wife and school her on the finer points of SW fandom?

Please?

So Bossk, are you saying that when I get married, I should make sure I'm marrying a woman who likes Star Wars? How much easier would that make life?

i just wanna make sure he's cool with it first just so we're not doing anything behind his back...

American Graffiti wasn't bad, Luke.

And I'll definitely ask Jay about the Criterion thing...I need to send him a custom avatar anyway, so I can kill two birds with one stone.

1995 VHS
Time
I was ten back when the '95 VHS tapes came out also, and I remember all of the commercials saying 'One last time,' and I recall thinking, 'No, it's not; they're just saying that.'

Honestly, how many thought that this was nothing more than an advertising ploy to boost sales?

Discussion: I Finally Got One! vintage Millennium Falcon
Time
Congratulations, R2! I know the euphoria you feel, because I managed to finally get my carded Mara Jade off of ebay just a few weeks ago (and I managed to pay less than the current market value is, even with shipping included). Not as big of a deal as your vintage Falcon, but it's definitely 'my favorite decoration.'

Now if only I could get Shannon McRandle's autograph on the card...that would be only too cool.

and im not just saying this...
seriously read the petition again...
it explains everything....

So Luke, if a bunch of us e-mailed Criterion, do you think we'd intrigue them...I mean, they're all about film preservation, so perhaps they feel as we do. Here's a link to the Criterion website; there is someone you can contact with suggestions: why don't we give it all a try, write some thought-out e-mails, and maybe they'll join our crusade.

half of you fans didnt even grow up with the originals and prolly saw star wars for the first time as the SE...

so in a way your generation is all teenage kids...
im not saying that you guys dont count... but you did say that "The problem with you guys is you assume that everybody is either one of you or ignorant."

so there's us... and then there's the ignorant... and thats where you fall into jimbo...
you cannot back up any of your arguments... you simply say "AOTC is awesome because it has a memorable story with tons of action"
"i love all of George Lucas' work!" "I love George Lucas" "Yoda fighting was the best scene in cinema history".... but you leave out substance...

we dont know why you think any of this because you dont explain yourself...

so your right... they're are us and then the iggnorant...
you!

and im not picking on you here... your the one who said it... im simply pointing out who the iggnorant are...

The flaw in your logic is you assume that I like everyone of the changes. I have signed the petition and I hate him putting Hayden in Return of the Jedi. I hate it to death. My opinion of George lowered after seeing this. But for crying out loud why would you rather have matt lines, abandoned cities, fuzzy lightsabers, and dewbacks that don't move. There are far far more good changes then bad.

I think almost everyone will agree with this: we're not against the changes, we're against Lucas pretending like the originals never happened and not releasing them on DVD as well. Those changes seem a million times worse than they actually are because they're completely screwing with what the movies originally were and now the illusion is being made that the Prequels were made first, since Lucas feels he has to bend everything in the Originals to fit his latest vision.

And would I rather have matte lines, abandoned cities, fuzzy lightsabers, and dewbacks that don't move? If all of it's in a thirty-year movie that I loved without computer graphics, I definitely would rather have them. And I'll give you an example to follow, Jimbo; I'll explain my answer. Those original effects used to be the pinnacle of visual effects, and captivated audiences, becoming a major part of the reason why Star Wars is so beloved today. Without those original effects, much of the magic of Star Wars is gone, because instead of seeing the effects evolve with the films, the latest effects are simply being added to the older movies, taking away an essential part of Star Wars: the creativity of the original cast and crew.

Guys, I think we need to start hounding Criterion about this. If enough people complain, we could receive an ally in forcing open the safe where Lucas keeps the prints of the originals. I'd be willing to spend the extra money for a Criterion Collection of the Star Wars Trilogy, even if there aren't any extras except for six hours of commentary in which Lucas is muttering, 'Bastards...what have you done...distributing my work prints to the world...no...not good...bastards...why did it come to this?' and of McCallum shouting, 'You f*cking bastards...you destroyed my well-placed plans to ensure that these movies would never be seen again...damn, you, damn you!'

Is it just me or has Wizards of the Coast crippled any piece of Star Wars licensing they've gotten their hands on? I mean, look at the TCG, and now the Insider. It makes me sick, and it also bothers me like Lucas is trying to make it seem like the old original trilogy is the one being released. Damn, I wish we could pressure him into releasing the originals; it just pisses me off feeling so powerless.
