Funniest Movie Ever
Time
Ahhhh...Monty Python... Virtually everything they made is classic, in my eyes. After I saw Troy, I was talking with a friend who hadn't, and we somehow got on a Holy Grail tangent, talking about the 'Trojan Rabbit' they constructed. Oh, and the coconuts...I'll never forget those... If I had a spare $150 floating around, I'd buy the complete television series on DVD.
Now we both sound a bit looney to Warbler, Ric.

You know, I have never played that Pink Floyd CD while watching Wizard of Oz. I want to sit down and do that someday, mainly because I've heard it's such a strange experience and it would just be fun to say I've done it.

The original Star Wars arcade game in all its line-art beauty.

I love that game. Still not enough, though.

What is up with LucasArts' aversion to the PS2? There are a few games, but nothing spectacular. One of the only games we PS2 owners have been stuck with is Super Bombad Racing, and the title and cover art alone are enough to merit its chucking. XBox owners have gotten their GTA III and Vice City; I think the PS2 crowd should get KOTOR. It's definitely one of the best Star Wars games, and I think gameplay would be a lot better on a console than a PC.

Happy 5th Anniversary Phantom Menace!

The hype sickened me when TPM came out. My Star Wars interest was in a standstill at the time, and I remember seeing commercials on TV for Amidala costumes and Maul's double-bladed lightsaber. I recall that that lightsaber was supposed to be cool, but I thought, 'big deal.' It wasn't until August of September of 1999 that I saw the movie, and the only reaction I recall having is being enamored with Natalie Portman. I was fourteen at the time, and most of the reason I was so neutral regarding the film was that it didn't feature Luke and Han and Leia (most of all Luke--he's always the one I've identified with, and not having him there made me feel lost). I think I liked Jar-Jar at the time, until everyone else started hating him. It's only been in the past year or so that I've stopped giving a damn what others think about the Gungan.

Yeah, I know. It makes me even more determined to boycott. And I was thinking about it and I was wondering how much of what he has said over the years is true. I've heard him say that he originally had the entire original trilogy in mind back before ANH was ever made, but after I hear him talking about how he originally envisioned Greedo shooting first, how Luke was supposed to scream falling down the shaft on Bespin, and the like, I really don't trust the guy.

Also, if anyone else has seen the clips, did any of you find his symbolic interpretation of the trench assault in ANH a little strange?

Harry Potter 3

You're right, now that I think about it. I was reading on Order of the Phoenix last night, wanting it to go a bit faster, and I remembered there were scenes in Goblet of Fire that could be cut after all. Since it had been about a year since I had read it, I had this insane belief in my head that almost everything was vital to the story. Ah, but at least it'll force people to read the books if they want the larger story, and that's not bad at all.

Have fun. Though I'd rather be reading the fifth book at midnight. I've had it a year, and I've finally managed to sit down and start it. Don't feel too bad about being a junkie; when book six is released, I plan on standing in line for the book. Not looking forward to the movie, though. It's gotten good reviews, and I'm sure Gary Oldman does a superb job as Sirius Black, but the books keep getting more and more complicated as Harry, Ron, and Hermione progress through Hogwarts, so I feel the films may gradually lose quality (though the books do keep getting better, which is a plus).

I can understand. I think we all have a tendency at times to focus on the negative rather than look at the good (I am definitely guilty of that ). With the prequels, it's suddenly cool for people to poke fun at Star Wars (ex. Jar-Jar Binks). I think the mainstream public is alienated when Star War fans argue over the prequels, and think 'This is stupid, I don't want to be around "those sorts."' It would be nice if we could all acknowledge the reasons we're all fans (those reasons go beyond the films themselves) and enjoy talking about those reasons, rather than tearing each other down with endless arguments that can neither be won nor lost. Apology accepted, Jimbo .

Jimbo, I really want to respect your opinion and defend your right to have it, but (no offense) you seem to just be picking a fight. If AOTC is your favorite Star Wars movie, more power to you, but it's harsh to say 'if you hate a Star Wars movie you are not a Star Wars fan.' To be here and still be fighting for the original classic trilogy cuts on DVD even after it's been announced that they won't be says a lot about everyone's love of the Star Wars universe.

Good to hear that Yoda's not being CGed in the classic trilogy, but as for changing Yoda in TPM? That's one change I would support.
I hope Lucasfilm confirms all of the changes soon, but they probably won't because some of them might scare away buyers (like me, over the Hayden Christensen insert, though I've already decided not to buy them regardless).

I've been piqued with interest concerning the NJO, but am kind of put off because of the fact that I've heard that R.A. Salvatore kills off Chewbacca in the very first. I have a feeling that many are put off by that, though. Tell me, I've got plenty of reading time this summer, how many of you would recommend the series?

Very unfortunate. It's been seven years since the SEs were released, and it's difficult to remember a time without them. It's probably even worse for the casual fan. The main change that I liked in the SEs, though, was the end music of ROTJ (not the celebration sequence itself, just the change of music). This is probably because of this one day when I was home sick from school and watched the original ROTJ (back before the SEs), and as I lay miserably on the couch afterward, Yub Yub echoed in my head and made me feel worse.

I'm not sure, but I don't think that is right. I'll have to do a little checking.
What I do know now, is this:

There was a Boba Fett action figure released pre-ESB.

My assumption was that:
It was initially made because he "appeared" in A New Hope. The release of the action figure was delayed then because the footage was cut.
Then, presumably when ESB was announced, they started to release the figure, with a little addition to the packaging, saying he was a "new character in Empire Strikes Back".

That's interesting. Where did you find that out? I read he first showed up in the Holiday Special cartoon, but then again, if he was cut out of ANH in 1977, then that would still hold true.

I've never heard the original audio of that scene. What does that man say to Han Solo? The same things Jabba did?

Just watched my clip again. He says exactly what CG Jabba says in the SE, but he has more of an Irish accent than a Scottish one, now that I've taken the time to watch the clip more closely (given my fascination with all things Irish and Scottish, I do tend to mix the two accents up fairly often ).

The first time I saw AOTC in the theatre, I didn't give the CG much thought. It was there, but I didn't dwell on it (though that might have been due to how my allergies were bothering the hell out of me). I actually enjoyed the vastness of the galactic territory covered, the sound of the seismic charges, Yoda going rabid with the lightsaber. I loved John Williams's score, as always.
Did it meet my expectations? Well, I don't exactly recall if I went in with any expectations, other than seeing Natalie Portman . But it gave me two-hours of old-fashioned adventure, with, granted, an overuse of CGI. It entertained me, and it can still entertain me when I put the DVD in. In my opinion, it did it's job.
Is it better than the OT? Not to me, anyway. But I think that's also because of the nostalgia the classics hold for me, and I won't deny that that's a part of it, or that I feel somewhat sorry for the kids growing up today, who don't have our memories of ANH, ESB, and ROTJ. But, you know, if Jimbo likes AOTC best, then I can accept it. I don't have to agree with him, but I feel it's refreshing to have an opposing view on the forums, and I admire him for having the courage to stand up for AOTC, even though it isn't very popular.

Anakin was too creepy for my tastes. I think Hayden Christensen was trying to hard to foreshadow evil with his character. I mean, all the publicity photos and posters for Ep. II show him holding his lightsaber in front of him with eyes narrowed to slits. What happened to 'the good man who was your father'?

CGI and Digital or Real models and actors-whats your prefferance.?

Couldn't agree more. Perhaps part of the reason the acting in the prequels hasn't been as good as it should be is the fact that most of the movies have been filmed in front of green screens before the finished concepts of the scenery have been completed.
On the subject of CGI characters, Gollum IS incredible in virtually every detail. Puppet Yoda is, and always will be, my favorite incarnation of Yoda (even with all of the lightsaber action in Ep. II taken into account).

Welcome GS! Thanks for sharing that with us.

I just purchased "Alien" on DVD; now it has both the directors cut and the original version on one single DVD. I presume it just plays the same versions, adding or subtracting certain scenes as required. Why can't Lucasfilm do this? Surely they have the knowhow? I also liked the introduction to the Directors cut, in which Ridley Scott very humbly said that he hoped we agreed with the changes he'd made in that version. Just imagine Lucas doing something like that...

As for me, I have decided just to stick with my VCR tapes for now. If the opportunity comes along, I will get a bootleg version, perhaps from someone who has posted in the forums here, but I'm not too fussed.

Adding and subtracting scenes in Alien was easy because there is only about 5 minutes difference. With Star Wars putting both versions on one disc would have a total of over 3 hours of movie. Thats just with the 1997 Special Edition since the DVDs will include addition changes it would be even longer. That would result at a slightly reduced bit rate.

I think you're right, Jimbo. I've heard that the seamless branching would be a mess with all of the changes between the originals and SEs, which is unfortunate, because I feel Lucas is probably just using that as another excuse not to release the originals.
