Tolkien was a perfectionist, and his alterations mainly fixed mistakes that readers caught, etc. Think of his corrections as something like the editions of textbooks; it's always fairly clear that you're reading the fourth or fifth or sixth edition. And Samatar's right, Tolkien made the reader fully aware that he made changes, while Lucas just wants us to think that he intended the Special Editions all along.

Easter Egg?

Unfortunately, it'll be something corny, and even if there was something involving the original cuts, it would only be footage of Lucas setting fire to the original film reels and letting them burn in a garbage can on Skywalker Ranch. Something ala Shawshank Redemption: he and Rick McCallum will dance around the fire 'like wild injuns. They'll see the flames for miles.'

I agree, Jimbo. That's all part of a director's license, though I am partial to the 2:35:1 ratio. It's so broad, so panoramic, so epic. Some movies (Star Wars, LOTR, Braveheart, Lawrence of Arabia) require that ratio, some don't. I've noted, though, that Steven Spielberg, who would seem like the type to use the 2:35:1 ratio uses the 1:85:1 ratio instead. A bizarre choice for films like Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List, but it works, and if he prefers it, that's his prerogative.
What should be made standard, Ric, is the banning of fullscreen video releases, period, though I think we all more or less agree on that.

Edit: Correction. Some phenomenal classic films were made without widescreen use (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Seven Samurai). Those obviously should be allowed to remain fullscreen.

I share some of your sentiments, RS. The last frame was bloody atrocious, and there was an empty feeling to it. Buckbeak was one of my favorite parts of the film. I felt it was better than the first two, but it really should only serve as a supplement to the book. I don't know...I could live without seeing it again and feel no real regrets.

I just saw it this evening as well. I liked it, despite how I originally dreaded a new movie adaptation. I think straying from the book actually helped it, though the first two captured the rich atmosphere of Hogwarts, unlike this one, though I guess it doesn't matter since the stage had already been set in those first two. Enjoyable movie, especially Hermione's decking of Malfoy.

I've been piqued with interest concerning the NJO, but am kind of put off because of the fact that I've heard that R.A. Salvatore kills off Chewbacca in the very first. I have a feeling that many are put off by that, though. Tell me, I've got plenty of reading time this summer, how many of you would recommend the series?

it is really Great what the series really is is the shift to another generation in SW that is why chew dies in the first book to tell you that it is no holdss bar. you will be shocked at some of the stuff that happens to the SW universe by the end.

this is just s tit bit. they are major things that happen but you can seee them like two books off once you start reading. some of the books in the series are very bad but others are spectaurlar. one of the traitor is probably on my top 5 best books.

curoscent is Destroyed completely and utterly. and another Jedi purge occurs

Sounds tantalizing. The long series I've read lately (like Left Behind) have tended to be letdowns as the series goes on, but I think I'll give it a try, after Order of the Phoenix and the second Thrawn book.

You're lucky, then. I toyed with the notion of buying widescreen VHS copies on e-bay a few years back, but they were fetching outrageous prices. I've only seen tantalizing bits of the widescreen originals on TV documentaries. But, yes, I should've added the 'on DVD' part.

Interesting theories...the Wormtongue/Lupin thing makes sense, it's probably not by chance that Rowling had Voldemort give him a silver arm, but I would only like it if she placed Harry nearby so that he could kill the bastard in return...Wormtongue and Snape, the two characters I'm most tired of. Oh, and then there's Draco, and his father, and Fudge...okay, the list is actually quite large after all.
I'm going to see the movie tonight...I hope it does justice to the book. It doesn't have to be identical (I'm not one of those types), I just want it to be enjoyable of its own accord.

And I do. I really liked AOTC. Can't say the same about TPM, but I have only seen it once. So that could be a contributing factor. I've been meaning to give it a second chance, just haven't gotten around to it.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has that approach (separating the prequels and the originals). It's probably the best way to do it. I once thought that a day-long Star Wars marathon would be fun, but the differences between the two trilogies would clash too much, so I figure it's best to just watch the trilogies separately. Also, my references to the prequels when discussing the original trilogy are mainly limited to generalities and basic facts.

Since we have all been living w/ SW for over 25 years, we have already fleshed out those details in the back story in our own minds. As a result, we have our own preconceived notions of how the PT should play out. Since GL's vision is not the same as those notions, we have become disillusioned with the PT. Thus, why it is best to judge the PT on its own merits rather than comparing it with the OT.

That's the exact reason why this debate exists. That and how GL is not acknowledgeing that basic fact. The way my best friend and I, out of all of my friends, are able to enjoy the prequels is because we've judged each trilogy separately.

MORE CHANGES!!! (for the 2004 OT DVD release)
Time
So, does anyone have any idea where the concept for Boba Fett came from? It's just my opinion that, if he was created by the Holiday Special people, that GL would never have used him like he did (given his quotes regarding the special). Then again, maybe that's why he appears to be swallowed by the Sarlacc in ROTJ. Maybe Fett's just one of those creatures that Lucas isn't able to get rid of, no matter how hard he tries...

Even before the advent of DVDs, I loved widescreen whenever I came across it. When I first decided to buy a DVD player, one of the main things I wanted it for was so that I could watch everything in widescreen. In fact, I adamantly refuse to buy anything in fullscreen (excepting a couple of TV shows, like Chappelle's Show, which have no other option, so they really don't count). My Wal-Mart at home had copies of Road to Perdition and Spy Game that I would have bought long ago, had they provided both formats, but alas, they're only full-frame. My parents don't particularly like the bars on the top and bottom of the screen, so anytime I'm at home and I rent a movie for us to watch, I always have to compromise and pick up the fullscreen version. Oh, well.

I dream of the day when I'll finally be able to sit down and watch the original trilogy in widescreen glory.

I'm really glad I didn't go to TR47 for my copies. I think you're right Patrick, that someone is out to undermine competition. It was extremely low-brow to go after Digitalfreaknyc for offering copies for FREE (asking only for people to send him blank DVD-rs and return shipping). If I had a copy of TR47's ROTJ, I would gladly send it to Rikter. I encourage anybody who does to get in touch with Rikter and help him out.

Funniest Movie Ever

I watched Holy Grail this afternoon...I remember it being hilarious, but not as totally insane as it actually is. I feel the biggest thing the movie has going for it is the sheer WTF factor...it's a classic, and one of the most solid film depictions of the Arthurian legend, at that (despite it being parody).
BTW, has anyone ever timed that music track at the very end?

What this about a leaked memo, Gundark? I've heard people talk of how they wished there was an R-rated Star Wars film, but I haven't heard about this. Somehow, I can't picture an R-rated Star Wars film, especially when the flames on the dead stormtroopers were cut out in the 90s.

On the topic of Harry Potter, as I've read the books, I can't help but picture Anthony Hopkins in the role of Alastor Moody. Just something I was thinking on a little this evening.

Movies that have never been released in original form on DVD

Oh, no, a more psychedelic experience at the end of 2001? I would try it out if it wasn't for my severe phobia of that movie. Despite it's spectacular special effects, the movie scares the hell out of me, and I just don't get it. But that's happened everytime I've sat down to watch a Kubrick movie. I must be one of the few people on the face of the earth that doesn't like the filmmaking of Stanley Kubrick.

Yeah, they keep getting shelved in the juvenile section for some reason...yet they've gradually become more mature as Harry progresses through Hogwarts, though it's my belief that the series abruptly ceased being a set of children's stories some six hundred pages into Goblet of Fire, in that one-sentence paragraph where ______ is killed.

Sorry, that's already taken. It'll be The Hobbit's alternative title. Asuming it'll be done.

Well, Ep. III is coming out first, and the Star Wars franchise has earned more money, given that it's been around longer than the LOTR film franchise, so I vote for giving the title to Ep. III. Besides, it really does fit Lucas's cash grabs over the past decade.

Actually, I don't think it was the Gungan motif as much as the little cartoon Yoda and Darth Maul on the cover. I didn't even think about the GBA, but you're right. I wonder who makes the decisions on which consoles the Star Wars games are released on?
