Well, it did start out sex-related, but some of us changed its course, probably for the better, too...I don't know, a thread about blow jobs isn't exactly what I like to read when I check out the forums.

Could This Be True or Just An Elaborate Hoax? Something even worse than the Holiday Special?
Time
I read this awhile back, too...I remember switching back and forth from belief to disbelief many times throughout it, and then I realized it was fake when someone mentioned the first letter of each paragraph on some forum. I think I wanted it to be true for some reason...

R2...are you suggesting I don't sit down and watch the Holiday Special with my friends? I'm getting it from Rikter, and am planning on making it a Holiday tradition, but if your best friend isn't talking to you after you put her through it, maybe it should be one tradition I should keep to myself....

I'm loving all the covers people like Dean, Galahad, cerebro, and Rikter are coming up with. You guys have a talent for manipulation, and I totally mean that as a compliment. I'd suggest that anyone who's interested in using more than one cover, do like they do with a lot of anime DVDs and make reversible covers. If you're using nice photo paper, make sure you get it right when you turn over the cover. I'm certainly planning to do it ASAP. I do have a couple questions I'd like to throw out there:

1) Are any of you rarin' to go on remakes of the official DVD set's covers? Judging by your work here and comments on the originals, I'd be excited to see what you come up with.

2) Are you using inkjet printers or color laser for printing? I'm lucky enough to have access to both and only have to pay for the paper.

Keep up the good work guys!

Thanks for all of the compliments ZombieFlanders! But Dean, Cerbero, Rikter, and the others are really the ones with the talents for maniupulation. My copies were simply copy and paste hybrids of a number of covers...nothing too special. I printed my most recent sets of covers off on a color laser printer that I had access to, and they really all came out well, so I'd recommend using that if you can. I echo your sentiments of redesigning the official DVD covers--Dean, Rikter, and the others would all do infinitely better than Lucas's designers. Welcome to the forums!

Lucas Even Screws Up Jabba's Character
Time
I read your article this morning and loved it, Erich. I hadn't thought about it before, but it makes perfect sense. Here we see an example of Lucas trying to keep us from thinking. Oh, and don't listen to Jimbo; he claims he's trying to keep things balanced, but most of us feel like he only causes trouble.

Quote

Those arguements suck. Not the movies. The Phantom Menace is a good movie and Attack of the Clones is the best movie. Everything in Attack of the Clones is absolutly perfect.

Oh, yeah, AOTC is perfect. Just listen to this line that smacks of perfection:
--'You're not all powerful.'
--[Sulking like a six-year-old] Well I should be...someday, I'll be the most powerful Jedi ever!'

I know...but how do we reach a larger audience when Lucas and McCallum control Star Wars fandom? Many would sign if we could come up with something cool to do to promote ourselves.

All the cover choices are dizzying, Luke. It seems like you find one set you like, you print it out, then the next day someone else puts up another set. That's what happened this week for me, anyway. I first printed out Cerbero's Laser-Disc covers, liked them, but then I managed to get Dean's printed out and put in the cases yesterday, only to read Hal's post about how he cut and pasted a variety of covers and spines, so now I am going to be printing out my new covers this afternoon after I get off work. It's crazy!

Here you go...a zip folder containing the covers I pieced together last night. It contains both versions of the bonus disc cover art, so you canuse whichever one you wish. The folder is 12.4 MB in size, so I don't know how long I can keep it up, but since I'm going on vacation this weekend, it'll definitely be up for a little over a week, at least.

Anyone else have any other ideas, short of hacking into Lucasfilm databases or setting Skywalker Ranch on fire? Not that the e-mail idea is a bad idea, Luke, but I'm not too sure how well it'll go over. Those of us that have blogs and websites have banners up and links all over the place, I know, but so far, I only know of one person that I know that has signed the petition. We need something creative and cunning, yet legal.... Hmmmmm....

Should Star Wars Purists Shut Up?

Good site, Erich, and welcome to the boards! You'll find here that a majority of us agree with you on varying levels, so I hope you post here again! I'm not as anti-PT as you, but I did agree with a most of your points. I especially liked your History Channel analogy, because 'The Hitler Channel' is a running joke between my best friend and I, since we watch it often. And you're right about the screwing up of Anakin's age. One of the first things Lucas could have done was bump the prequels up on the chronology, placing the first one immediately preceeding the Clone Wars and introducing an Anaking just coming out of adolescence. The second and third would take place during the Clone Wars, as Anakin falls closer and closer to the Dark Side, on a path parallel to, but the polar opposite of, Luke's. But Lucas has become arrogant, believing himself to be flawless in his intellect, so what we have is a very flawed trilogy. But though I can stand the prequels, and actually watch them, I have infinitely more enjoyment with Luke's story, so I watch the classics more often. I'll be linking to your site on my blog, and I'll be looking forward to your future posts!

Actually, it took only about ten minutes or so...I simply used the color selector to capture the shade of color around the letters, then used that color with the airbrush...I'll admit there was some trial and error, since I couldn't find just the right tool to use until I settled on the airbrush. Incidentally, the spine on the Supplemental disc said 'Supplemental Materials,' while all of the rest of the artwork said said 'Supplemental Material,' so I found myself using the color selector and marking the added 's' in materials out with the inkpen tool (I also had to copy and paste the DVD logo on the very bottom of the supplemental spine). It was quite fun to customize my own set of covers.
Oh, and I've got all the files zipped together on my computer right now, including both supplemental covers. I'll stick them on my webspace this afternoon, and give you all a chance to download them if you want to. And also, I'll shortly be continuing my work on the inserts for the anamorphic versions...I'll be releasing those one at a time, it looks like, though, and it doesn't look like it'll take me too much longer to finish the ESB insert.

We are fighting to make the OT available in common places where everybody can easily find and purchase them. To have to enter a bidding war on eBay or buy a bootleg from someone whose reliability is questionable at best is not how consumers should have to find the original copies of one of the highest grossing series of movies of all time. If this were some B movie, it would be understandable. But not Star Wars.

Well said, Bossk.

Only one gripe: the spines.
They have a background thing that contains the words "special editions".
We can't have that, now can we?

I used the spines that otherwise look the same aside from the logo that forms when all three are next to each other.

Hal, don't worry...if you look carefully, you'll see I airbrushed the 'Special Edition' off of the logo.
Here are close-ups of each spine:

To be honest, I didn't even think about it until I had the spines on, and I liked the background logo so much that I decided I needed to fudge over it. Hope that clears it up.

Heck, at that size, I'll post them all up. That was ANH, clearly.

This is ESB:

And here are the two supplemental disc designs, one with Dean's front, the other with Cerbero's front, respectively:

In the event that you would like to use these yourself, let me know, through posting or sending me a PM, and I'll set you up with the full-sized copies!

Update:
I just finished off the adapted trilogy covers. I'll just state that none of the artwork or layout is mine, though it's certainly obvious. I used the spines that bore the episode number, with the Special Edition Trilogy logo in the background, though I didn't think anything of the words 'Special Edition' being emblazoned across the spines until after I finished everything else, so I went back in and airbrushed it out. I also created two different versions of the Supplemental disc covers: one with Dean's front, the other with a front created by Cerbero. The backs are all from Dean's, since I especially liked his layout. I took the fronts of the trilogy DVDs off of that cover site that Hal mentioned a little while ago, though I took the ones that have the Roman numerals in a large font in the upper left-hand corner (similar to the official releases, though the artwork doesn't suck like those). If anyone would like a supplemental cover with the front from the official releases, send me the jpg, and I could stick it on quite easily.

So, without any further ado, here is a sample of what I did:

If anyone saw the gargantuan picture, I apologize. This should rectify it:

I got ambitious and started working on some similar to what Hal's sound like. I'm going to try a couple variations of the Supplemental Disc, since it offers the most leeway, as only it spine really has to match the rest of the trilogy. I'll put them up here soon (or at least a sample).

Good luck, Hal! Have you ever tried using The Gimp? It's a free Photoshop-like program, and that's what I'm using right now.

I THINK I FIGURED IT OUT - WHY SO MANY SW FANS DISLIKED THE PT...

OT fans dont like the PT cus it is to open, to wide to impersonal. one of the greatest strengths and hooks of the OT was that is was so personal, you had luke han and leia, and you really really got to know them well. they were the heros, and at all key points in the movie all three were directly linvolved inwhat was going on. in the PT it is not longer personal, the only character that we really follow closely is Obi-wan. In the PT events are alover the place, in TPM you have stuff going on on naboo and curosant and tatoone at the same time, key events. in AOTCs you have Obiwan going off on one mission doing one thing, and you have anakin go off on another, they are not together until the end, and i know that there are alot of SW fans that thought that near the end AOFC became very very good. so that is it right there, that is what is different, and its that diference that is aliening the minds of so many fans, they are used to seeing a starwars film that is personal, and they are not getting it, 'so the PT doesnt fell like a starwars movies' <- how many times have you heard that b4 lol.

well there it is, that is the reason, and there is nothing wrong with it. So can the PT fans and the OT fan finally just agree to disagree.

am i wishing for too much there lol

I think your theory is right-on, Shimraa. And it's not that I despise the prequels or constantly go off on them. I find myself frustrated, though, by the third-generation (I'll call them that for convenience's sake) fans who became fascinated with the saga when the prequels were released. If you go on other Star Wars sites and visit the forums, you'll find that many of them like nothing more than to chew out any fans that aren't completely satisfied with George Lucas's current vision. I'm middle of the road in my Star Wars interest: I have few problems with the SEs, though I prefer the original cuts, and I love the Original Trilogy over the prequels, though I definitely don't have a problem popping in my Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones DVD when I feel like it. Heck, I even like Jar-Jar. At the moment, however, I find that the most argumentative and vicious fans are the ones that are pro-Lucas all the way, and have gotten really into the prequels. There's a thread on TF.N right now about Zahn haters, and there are a few that have posted that feel that Zahn is totally overrated and that the newer stuff in the EU is better. They initiate angry discussions about whether the stormtroopers are clones or not. I actually posted a pissed-off entry in my blog this morning describing my frustration with the Star Wars fan community, ironically, though I made sure I listed OT.Com as an exception, because it is.
Basically, I want to agree to disagree and leave it at that. However, many fans are simply perpetuating the disagreement and widening the rift between the fan base. It's sad.

Again I voice the sentiment of praise. I just printed out Dean's covers this afternoon, after my shift ended at the library. I felt like an ass standing by the color printer as it spat out Star Wars covers, mainly because two of the librarians and two patrons were nearby, and I felt strangely like I breaking some rules or not being a good employee or something, but as I said, I had already punched out, so what does it matter? Bottom line is, now I have the covers cut out and placed in the DVD cases and they look great! The printer I used printed them out slightly more glossy than normal household printers, so you can barely tell they're not professional from a distance. That says a lot about the talent and ingeniuity of our own fan artists. I also have Cerbero's black artwork slipped in underneath Dean's, in case I ever feel like switching the artwork around.
