What age should my kids watch Star Wars?
Time

Hello.  Glad to have you on board.

I can only speak from personal experience.  I'd learned quite a bit about the movies through pop cultural osmosis (no spoilers really, but I knew what an R2-D2 was, what Darth Vader looked like, etc) through parodies and stuff in shows like Muppet Babies in the '80s.  I only first saw the films when I was nine, and that was definitely old enough to enjoy them and appreciate them.  I'd honestly say that's a perfect age:  you're just starting to become somewhat sophisticated and intelligent in your viewing choices, you've long since been mature enough to sit still for the duration of a movie and pay attention, and you're old enough to appreciate the narrative and not find it too scary.  You could probably get that reaction from younger kids too, like maybe around seven.  Of course, it really depends on your kids.  Honestly, I don't really think there is a "too young" because, if they like it, they'll keep watching the movies and grow to more fully appreciate them, but I can certainly understand why you'd want their first viewing experience to be special.

I don't have any kids, though, so maybe those here who have can shed a little more light on how things have gone with their own offspring.

Stop milking the cash cow, Lucas. It's been bleeding for the past five years...

Has it? People keep drinking their milk. I never understood that problem. Let a new generation have Star Wars too.

Why does there have to be new Star Wars for a new generation to have it?  There's already plenty of Star Wars for this, the next, and every subsequent generation to be satisfied.

Now you need to watch Godfather Part II.  In my mind it's better than the first in many ways, yet only because of how it builds on the first.  It really feels like the second half of the story.

The third one's not a bad movie, but it's wholly unnecessary, and kind of cheapens the ending of II.

I feel the opposite.  I don't think it cheapens the ending of II.  In fact, I think it reinforces the ending of II.

Um... no.  I just meant that George Lucas went back and altered the sky over the drive-in in the opening shot with a digital sunset.

Anyway, last movie I've seen:

Superman.

Oh, yeah I know the one you’re ranting about. I have the DVD first edition is it the same as what was on Sky? There have been versions on TV many, many years back and those where panned and scanned with the opening in scope and end credits.

Um, I don't know.  I'm not from the UK.  I've never watched Sky.  I was talking about the sky.

Superman The Movie Audio Problem
Time

Before I get back into this actual topic, this does remind me of something I encountered a few days ago.

I was at Best Buy, and I happened upon the big collectors' set of the old Fleischer Superman cartoons, which was cool.  I grew up watching those cartoons.  I have a few VHS tapes of them myself.  It looked like a pretty solid package.  So I picked it up and turned it over.  On the back it read, "Made for the serious collector.  Not intended for children."

What?  What?!  "Not intended for children"?!  Um, why?  So the nerds shelling out $50 for this won't feel emasculated?  Or has our society become that sensitive that children can't watch these cartoons?  I mean, who the hell were these things made for in the first place?  And the '90s Batman The Animated Series was based in tone and art style on those old cartoons.  Does that mean those aren't meant for children anymore either?  Ugh.  Society needs a good smack in the face.  Followed by a stick of dynamite down the pants, a rolling pin over the head, and all the other glorious violence we've turned our highly-evolved backs on.

No, MY thoughts on the state of OT.com
Time

I just find it so weird that this conversation is taking place at all.  I know Warb never ventures into Star Wars-related threads anymore, but I thought it was pretty well-established where Anchorhead stood.  And, honestly, as long as I've seen Anchorhead around here, I've never seen anyone take him to task for just liking the first movie.  In fact, I've always thought his view was a refreshing deviation.

However, they haven't been used that way since.  They've become the entire focus of the films, books, and cartoons.  Enough already!  There are other people and organizations in the universe.  It's ok to tell their stories too, and some authors have done a very good job of it.  Those are the stories that interest me now.

sounds like to me, you might prefer the Star Trek universe over that of Star Wars.

You think so?  Star Trek stays just as connected to Starfleet's hip as Star Wars does to the Jedi, if you ask me.
