The Boards Today
Time
Even with three finals today, I've had a lot of time to post and read posts today. And while this doesn't have to do with General Star Wars, it has to do with this section of the board. And I just have to say... DAMN! I'd wager this has probably been the least useful day of posting ever. Not exactly the word I'm looking for, but I'm trying to avoid being insulting because that's exactly all that's gone on today. And it's started out like any other day mostly. Somehow, Adam pisses somebody off, and debate ensues. Today, Adam seemed to piss off a few dozen posters, most of whom have only been here for a month or two if that, and we've fallen immediately into bickering and name-calling. Every single thread I've read today contains back and forth insults and swearing and I admit I thought it was funny at first, but I just came back now, and I realized that this is completely stupid. It's relatively entertaining when it happens in one thread, but it's going on in several threads in this section, and another one in the Theatrical Cuts vs. Special Edition section. It's just getting completely out of hand. How about everyone around here just tries to be mature around here and...

CUT IT OUT!!!

When did you give up with the Prequels, TPM, AOTC, or ROTS?

God ROTS sucked ass. It is the ONLY Star Wars movie that I actually fast forward though. Even TPM I can sit through the whole thing... But ROTS.... nope. When I walked out of the theater I thought it was the best of the 3 (which isn't saying much) but now that I've seen it 3 times, I hate it more than I hate the other two movies. And that is painfuly sad.

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why it is the best of the three and the worst of the three to me. It has a lot of good emotional moments that the others don't compare to, but it has just as many cringe-inducing moments that it brings the film down. And its bad moments to me are much worse than the bad moments in the previous two. Or maybe it's simply because the previous two kind of stay on middle ground for the entire movie, never going anywhere great or going anywhere too horrible, but ROTS has really high spikes up and horribly low spikes down.

The Star Wars Saga - From a newcomer's point of view
Time
I admit that over Thanksgiving when I was at home I experimented by watching the movies I-VI (well, actually, I only got through Empire before I had to go back to school) Lucas's versions, and I admit that they did allow for a different perspective that was quite entertaining. I didn't say it was better, just that it allows you to see them differently. Sadly, my mom started watching with me. She'd pop in and out once in a while anyway. She had seen the original Star Wars in theatres in '77 supposedly, but she doesn't really remember it or care. She actually got into it, but when I got to the original Star Wars (oxymoron) she insisted on watching that with me because she wanted to see the movie that started it all. It was the worst viewing experience of Star Wars I'd ever had. She always asks questions in movies every fifteen seconds anyway. But there were, "Doesn't she know that Vader's her father?" and "How can C-3PO be there? Didn't Anakin make him?" And perhaps worst of all, "He doesn't look like Ewan McGregor!" It was then to my horror that I realized that I had indoctrinated my mother to Star Wars in numerical order. And she's all the more annoying for it.

But anyway, it's entirely possible that this girl liked it that way. I'm sure I would have too, and, like I said, I enjoyed the perspective myself. But it definitely doesn't prove anything about which way is better.

What species is Yoda anyway?
Time
Like I said, I think Yoda's perfectly fine without backstory. Just think if we had to spend a prequel trying to explain where Yoda came from. There's enough needless exposition going on there as it is without that dragging it down. It just would have turned out horribly, and given us one more thing to complain about because we didn't agree where George was going/thought it ruined the character. Yoda is Yoda. That's all he needs to be. I've never cared what he is or where he comes from. The character stands on its own without any need for expository information.

ROTS: Best actor?
Time
I think Ian did a pretty good job in that movie up until he "reveals" himself and then the acting gets horribly cheesy from that point on. I just think it's funny how Ewan McGregor is a supporting actor when he's been top billed for this movie and the last one. I agree that Anakin is the main character, and he should have been billed that way. But to be honest, I had to supress a chuckle looking at those ads. I had one of those, "Aww, they're trying so hard, but no one's going to take them seriously," moments.

Why do they go into exile?
Time
Hmm, very interesting point, and it had me scratching my head for a minute. I'm quick to jump on Lucas when I find a plot hole, but even I never thought about this before. I at least wanted the movie to be good, so I probably filled in gaps in my mind. I knew they had to go into exile, so the fact that they did made enough sense to me. I wouldn't be surprised if the novel explained it. But in my own thinking, I'm going to have to go with the secrecy of the whole mission. The Chancellor/Emperor seemed pretty popular when he turned the Republic into an Empire, and everyone already believed that the Jedi were evil and needed to be exterminated. I guess they figured they only had one shot at staging this coup (similar to Mace trying to covertly kill Palpatine rather than go through legal channels). Now that Yoda was ID'd and lost, the Emperor could garner even more sympathy for himself and malice against the Jedi by a second attempted assassination. Plus, I'm sure the place would be on high alert. Obviously, Obi-Wan and Yoda had no problem getting through Clone Troops earlier, so there's no problem there. It's the political machine that was against them, I'm sure, and by that point, even if they had killed Palpatine, he would have had underlings and supporters that took his place (or thought they were taking his place). But public opinion would still be swayed against Yoda and Obi-Wan, and killing Palpatine would do little good at that point. So they had to wait until the Empire's tyranny became less popular.

A stretch perhaps, but this is all speculation on my part.

I don't mind not knowing the origin of Yoda, especially since revealing the backstories of other characters have ruined the mystery to them. We'd probably find out Yoda was some test tube baby stolen by a bounty hunter and used to impregnate a droid, and that he was raised by Chewbacca, which would explain the good relations with the Wookiees I have, despite the fact that Yoda is several hundred years older than Chewbacca.

Found this quote from Lucas about changing the Original SW
Time
I'm actually quite fond of the bizzle. He's like the devil's advocate or the voice of reason. Whenever we get too lost in our own rantings and mob mentality, he beats us over the head with his shovel and brings us back down to planet earth and gives us some perspective and something to think about. And his perspective isn't always different than yours, he just likes to challenge everything, which I find fun. And while Adam can and has been all the things everybody's said before (no need to dig into it), he can also be a very competent poster when he wants to be, and he always stays on top of things with a fiery passion, even though his perspective and and way of expressing it irks me a lot.

If you could decide on the next release of the DVD's.
Time
I'd go with number 3. Actually, that's what this year's release would have been. The same box artwork with just the bare bones original movies on DVD, the theatrical versions, which, for the first movie, has never actually been released to a home format, has it? Only clean up the picture and sound. Restore it, don't change it. Perfect. The end.

THE Most Awesome Scene in Star Wars
Time
While it is indeed cool for the reasons you expressed, that particular scene always bugged me simply because the lightsaber didn't really appear to be doing its job. It was acting more like a laserbat, knocking people down and throwing them into the pit. For a weapon that's supposed to cut through anything, it wasn't cutting through anything at all. And I'm not a big violence nut that loves to see people's bodies become separated from themselves in the most creative way possible, but to me, even as a kid, it seemed kinda like censoring the carnage to a more "acceptable" level.
