IT HAS FINALLY HAPPENED
Time
I knew I'd find something like this without having to look too hard. From the starwars.com message board thread about this, amid a lot of positive rejoicing about getting the originals.

Orignally Posted by Lieutenant Wiggum Jansen[br]Who thinks the whining will stop here?

Personally, I think Lucas should have had the cojones to preserve his vision of the films.

Nevertheless, the extras have me $old too!! Of course. I won't ever consider these inferior versions to be part of the Saga, though.

You betcha I'll be cueing up Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration just for giggles.

I'm glad for this DVD, the historical preservationists out there who love the SpEds and support the Prequels deserve it.

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
Yeah, greencapt, I noticed that the first time I read that as well and kinda smiled. George wasn't mentioned at all. The whole time I was reading it, I was picturing George hunched up in a corner of a dark room grumbling that his company managed to wrench his hidden movies away from him. I wouldn't be surprised if he was really pissed about this but just relenting it for the cash and to keep us from storming the ranch one of these days.

And ADigitalMan, I'd love to hear Beru's original voice. They claim these are the 1977 theatrical versions, so I'd better hear it. I want those garbage mattes there, but not as obvious as they were in the 2004 releases, but like they were in previous releases. I've said all this in other threads, but there are so many of them, I can't keep up with which one is which.

Any truth to this? Lucas is releasing the three unaltered ORIGINAL Star Wars films?

I am glad that they use the -93 versions of the movies as they have been nicely and tasteful cleaned up and I don't mind the Episode IV (someone will probably make an edit of it that does not have Episode IV in the scroll).

I am just happy, happy and happy to finaly see them released on DVD. Thanks mr Lucasfor proving me wrong after all these years... and a big thank you to Jay and all of us buff's here on the forum.

Edited - bad spelling (as usual)

But these releases are said to not have the Episode IV in the scroll... unless that's been changed. I'm still a little bit worried about that being removed from the starwars.com press release.

And sorry I misunderstood you, Devilman. I'm torn 50-50 on that. If they're are corrected, then that will make them the new 2006 version, since the 2004 versions are corrections to the '97 versions. And the last thing we need is another new version, especially so soon.

The Official 2006 Discs Will Be No Better Than What We Have!

It may be the 97 SE quality print.

Jim Ward said in the USA Today article that it wont be as good as teh 2004 dvd and that it will be from 1993. Well when did work on the original Special Edition commence? 1993. And the first thing they did was preserve and restore the original negative, which they discovered had deteriorated quite a bit. It was washed and clean up of dirt and I believe and new Interpositive and Internegative was made from it, which was then used as the basis for the CGI additions in the SE.

Like Ward said, the 93/97 print is not as good as the 2004 one--theres more dirt and scratches that were digitally erased by Lowry in 2004 because that technology wasnt available when they first made the SE. But the 97 SE still looks fantastic and although it is dirtier than the 2004 release it is still stunning (and the colours are right!).

So dont fret yet. The screenshot of the X-wings on the official site looks damn good to me.

But weren't the colors in the '97 versions criticized for being too pink tinted?

We won!
Time
I'm not expecting a huge effort to release it. I've said it a dozen times already, but I'm glad because if they don't tamper with it, they can't screw it up and have it be different from the original release. The last thing we need is an alternate special edition with only a few fringe "corrections." The only thing that annoys me is how it's a bonus feature to the 2004 releases. It pisses me off that they'll be releasing the 2004 versions for the third time in two years! If this had been the first release of this new version alongside the originals, it would be kinda cool. But they've already suckered people into buying the new versions twice, and now he's going to do it again by luring us in with the originals, which are being advertised as "bonus content"! Bonus content?! You think we're actually buying this for the new versions? The theatricals should be released as the main content with the 2004s being the "bonus content".

How "original" do you think it is going to be...? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
Yeah, exactly. I never noticed the garbage mattes around the TIE fighters (or even knew what that term meant until I took Film Editing) until I watched the 2004 DVDs. I can't see them in any other so-called "inferior" version. Don't get me wrong. I don't want them removed. It just seems pretty silly how much George wants his definitive vision and fix up the special effects that he felt didn't live up to his expectations, but he made his "flaws" more obvious in the process. I want the comfort of knowing they're there, but I don't want them as obvious as they were in the DVDs, because that's not how they looked in the original release either.

EDIT: Plus, like I said in another thread, the less they try to "fix", the less chance there will be of them screwing up and getting us pissed off.

I'm starting to get a little nervous. Somehow it seems that something is going to go wrong. This will be a very stressful four months for Star Wars fans, wondering just how "original" it's going to be. The original starwars.com post gave me great hope by saying that it will be so original it won't even include Episode IV: A New Hope. That made me excited because that's more original than any home video release of Star Wars. But they've since removed that, and I'm wondering if they'll fudge a bit by removing matte lines and stuff like that. I want bare bones. I don't want any changes made to this. I want it to be as if I was alive in 1977 and getting to watch the movies in theatres. That's the experience I've always desired, and I sure as hell had better get it, or we'll just be right back to square one! I hope this fulfills my expectations.

I want it "ugly." I don't want anything but a very minimal visual cleanup to get rid of excessive grain and age. But I want all the matte lines, all the transparancies, and all the garbage mattes still there. And those aren't nearly as apparent as they were in the 2004 DVDs because the picture was cleaned up so much that the flaws became obvious. If they're true in saying the picture won't be as good as the 2004 DVDs, then I'll be happy. But they shouldn't try to remove anything. If I get these DVDs, and the rancor's matte line is gone, I will be pissed because that will not be the original version.

IT HAS FINALLY HAPPENED
Time
I just went back and re-read the starwars.com article out of sheer joy and noticed that it has been altered since the last time I read it. It now refers to the theatrical cuts as "bonus material" for the 2004 releases and no longer mentions the absence of the "Episode IV: A New Hope" subtitle. I wonder what it means, and why it was changed. Compare the version that Nanner Split has (thankfully) quoted at the top of this thread compared to how it reads now. Doesn't make much sense to me why it was shortened and changed.

I can't believe they're actually trying to make a Han Shot First t-shirt! It almost seems wrong somehow. I expected a low-key, "Fine, we're giving you what you want... grumble" release. Instead, they're acting like we would if we somehow got our hands on the original footage and were able to release it to the public. A Han Shot First t-shirt is akin to them kicking themselves in the balls and making fun of Lucas's comment (which was just posted in a thread a mere few days ago) that he always intended for Greedo to shoot first. Was Lucas replaced by a clone?!

Eh, I don't care about HD! The movies weren't made for HD, they weren't made for surround sound! The original are here on DVD! I'll be happy for the rest of my life. Lucas's popularity points just shot up about 50 points. Except for the crappy prequel trilogy, I'll never make fun of him again!

Except two months is a very small window. Better than nothing, but it would be nice if it was actually considered a real version instead of a special collector's edition. That's my only complaint.
