There really wasn't that much there in the first movie, so the second movie made me confused. Plus, I hate Swan now, the bitch. First she leaves her first fiance, and now apparently is drifting towards Jack and leaving Will behind... good lord. I really hated her walking out of the theater.

I honestly think (or at least hope) that it was just part of her ploy to sacrifice Jack, and that she's not really into him. However, a love triangle, if done right, could add some drama to the story. I don't know. What gets me is how eager everyone is to save Jack, especially Will. Will has the most reason to say, "Screw that idiot pirate!" I mean, Jack betrayed Will to Davy Jones. He got into a potentially deadly sword fight with him. And, as far as Will knows, Jack was having an affair with his fiancee. Yet he jumps up and says, "Yes! I'll put my life on the line to save him!" It was a cool cliffhanger ending, but it was just a bit hard for me to accept that Will would get over everything so easily.

Thanks. I'm going to go ahead and believe you that I did a good job. ^_^

However, now I'm more curious as to how this "Bible thumper" you talked to explained it, if you wouldn't mind sharing. I mean, I don't participate in church really beyond going to the service on Sundays. I've read through the whole Bible once, but it's been a while. So I could hardly be considered to have "Bible thumper" status. So it just makes me wonder how I could possible use a Japanese manga based on a Chinese fable to help explain the Christ story while this other guy apparently missed the boat or something.

Do you think they'll fix the sound issues?
Time
I want to say they won't be changed, at least this time around, because, as far as I know, this is simply a repackaging of the '04 and '05 releases. I also want to say they won't because of the fuss they made about it being "a deliberate, creative decision."

But I also think that it's possible that it will be changed eventually regardless. One, because they can't resist changing things as often as possible. Two, because history has shown that they'll quietly fix things and pretend they never existed. Luke's scream in '97 anyone? Hmm, I wonder what happened to that? I've never heard Lucas ever mention it before. I'd love to hear him try to explain that one. If I could get him to answer one question and force him to get an honest answer... well, I don't know if that would be the one, but it would probably be pretty high up on my list.

I thought there was more to it than that, like somehow his death and suffering 'magically' redeemed all us sinners. Maybe I was trying to read too much into it? And to be honest I don't really think that his words were understood. At least not fully, anyway.

Well, as a Christian who doesn't normally wander into this thread, do you mind if I take a shot at it? Hopefully I won't come across as sounding too dogmatic.

Oh, gosh, I can't believe I'm about to use this analogy, and I didn't plan to, but it just popped into my head. But you used Star Wars philosophy to relate, so I guess I can use fictional rules as well. In Dragon Ball, Son Goku eventually learns the technique to teleport or instantaneously move or whatever you want to call it (as long as you don't call it instant transmission... bleh). So he has the power to locate a person's ki, no matter where it is, and move to that location. Villains aside, nobody else can do it, but if they hold on to Goku while he is teleporting, then they will be transported along as well.

Okay, now to move in to more legitimate theological discussion based on Christian beliefs. You have to be perfect to get into heaven. None of us are. All of us have screwed up. Jesus was the only perfect human being. He's the only one who can get there. Back in the old days, people slaughtered and burned animals as a sacrifice to repent for their sins. But Jesus offered himself up as a super sacrifice to completely negate the old needs. So Jesus has eventually become the single sacrifice that every person for the rest of time can put his/her sins on. Just like the other DB characters need to hold on to Goku to move between worlds, Jesus functions the same way in the real world.

Phew. I hope that at least helped some. Heh, I did my best at any rate.

Yeah, but if he had any respect for us at all, he'd sell us a good version of the real theatrical cuts without making us buy practically every other movie he's ever made that, I might add, we've most likely already bought.

Originally posted by: Darth-Adroit[br]Most of the extraneous Star Wars product does suck and I definitely support anyone’s right not to spend money on crap they don’t want. I also agree that we should all do what we can to keep cash out of George’s pocket. I just see that SOME (not all) people are being a little intellectually dishonest about all of this. They say that anyone that buys the DVDs in September is a fool and part of the problem. Then these same people rush off to buy Battle Front 2 and Empire at War and place an even larger chunk of cash in GL’s pocket.

I know you said before it's a "if the shoe fits" thing, but I just want to clarify in case I came across the wrong way. I don't think the people buying the September releases are fools or idiots or anything like that. I mean, I still desperately want to buy these, despite all the crap I've heard because I want to see the OOT on DVD, just like you all do. I just think it's a bad idea to think, "I'm going to buy these crappy discs not because I want them, but because it might convince George to sell me something else that's better." It just makes me sick when I see that logic, and it makes me feel even more sick to think that George has that stranglehold over it like that.

Oh, and, for the record, I haven't bought a Star Wars video game since Episode I Racer for my N64. ^_^ I once borrowed Battlefront from a friend of mine a year ago, but that's it.

Um, no, I won't. Mind tricks don't work on me. Only quality entertainment, to which Star Wars no longer applies. I never intended to watch it. I'll never have any desire to. Unless I happen to be with a group of friends who all want to watch it, and they won't listen to my arguing, then I most likely will never see it. Nice try, Randy, but, once again, your short quips get you nowhere.

Yeah, I am. Is that a problem for you?

Think about it this way, Shim. What if, on Return of the Jedi, they decided to use the '04 DVD elements in the last scene. But to make it the "original" version, they took the Hayden Force ghost scene and pasted Sebastian Shaw's head on top of Hayden's head. Would you consider that to be original?

They promised us the theatrical versions. They've already made a slew of crappy decisions for this release. Now they're flat-out lying to us. Geez, Shim, what would Lucasfilm have to do before you lost trust in them?

What did the Prequel Trilogy need?

I agree about there being too much diversity in the PT, especially since it clashes with the human-centric universe of the original films. I'm sure it wasn't a purposeful choice to have so many humans in the OT, but that's the way it is. That's the universe that existed, and you kind of have to go with that. I mean, George has tried to add creatures into the OT, but it's usually in added scenes that don't connect with the rest of the movie. And you're left wondering why these creatures disappear immediately afterward and go back to human-centric worlds. Oh, wait, that just made me think of something. The extended Mos Eisley sequence is another one that ruins a setup, just like the Jabba scene ruins the reveal of Falcon. The intent of the cantina sequence was to suddenly go from a very human world to a very diverse world. That's why there were so many shots simply of aliens because you'd never seen them before. But then you have the new Mos Eisley entrance with these new creatures added in, and it dilutes the cantina just a bit. You've already seen a buttload of fantasy-based creatures.

But, yeah, the prequels just had to have some alteration on everybody that wasn't a major character. There were so many almost human with a slight difference races.

Wow, you know, it really makes it feel worth it to be a Hyperspace member to be able to see things like that. I mean, wow, clips from 30 year old movies we already own. That's certainly worth paying money for. But what a crappy trailer. "And learn the shocking truth about Darth Vader. 'I am your father.'" Well, I guess I just learned that shocking truth. No need to buy the movie now... I mean, I know everybody knows it, but do they have to trivialize it that much? I don't see any Citizen Kane trailers saying, "And learn the shocking truth behind Rosebud..." followed by an image of... well, I'm not going to ruin it in case somebody doesn't know.

But, anyway, I digress. It was a crappy trailer. They spent more time talking about that damned video game than they did about the theatrical versions. And they made sure to include as many SE shots as humanly possible. "Now more convenient to own!" I really can't understand their contradictory marketing campaigns, especially when it comes to the wonder and amazement of being available separately. Maybe it's just me, but I don't recall any movie company ever bragging about having to buy three movies separately. They usually start raving about movie collections, but I've never seen anybody brag about how wonderful it is to pull them apart. If they're going to market them as being the OOT, then market them as being the OOT. If they're going to market them as being... um, rebellious individualists, then market them that way. Maybe they're just doing it to cover their own asses, so that when people complain, they'll just point to trailers like this and say, "See, we only devoted about five seconds to that part of the trailer," which is probably how much time they devoted to the movies, "so why would you expect it to be that great?" Um, because your evil twin brother marketing campaign tells us to buy them solely because of that.

Are they ever going to make sense?

The Emperor & line change in ESB SE 1997
Time
I'd prefer a bubble gum cigar if you don't mind. ^_~ Not a big fan of the smokes, you understand. But I appreciate the sentiment all the same.

Anyway, from watching the real ESB, you could infer a few things. I don't know, it's a little bit ambiguous. You could be certain that Vader was searching for Luke. I mean, you can't get any more clear than "obsessed with finding young Skywalker." It could possibly be inferred to be a revenge thing for the Death Star. Or it could also be the father/son connection. Or both. Meanwhile, Vader could (and almost assuredly does) have his own motivations for trying to recruit Luke and possibly use him to overthrow the Emperor. After much thinking, here is what I believe to be the meaning behind the conversation between Vader and the Emperor. Assuming, as I would, that the Emperor always knew about Luke since the Battle of Yavin, he was sorely pissed at him for making a fool of the Empire. It's only now, though, that he senses that Luke could be a possible threat to everything, maybe because of his training with Yoda. So the message is to let him know how big a threat this could possibly be and, depending on Vader's officially stated intent, to either hurry up and get Luke and kill him or to possibly abandon his attempt to capture him alive. But Vader bargains, reminding his master of what a great commodity a new Sith would be when Force-trained people are a rarity. And, if that didn't work, he promised to kill him. Of course, he didn't mean it. Even Shadows of the Empire states that.

But the new version utterly destroys that line of thinking. Besides the previously mentioned chain of command where Vader could definitely not get away with using the fleet to search for Luke without being found out. I mean, geez, he couldn't have been more transparent if he put up a mission objective billboard. "I'm sure Skywalker is with them." And yet we're supposed to believe that three years after the fact, they're just getting reconnaissance that "the young rebel who destroyed the Death Star is the offspring of Anakin Skywalker"? That can't be right. All Vader had previously been able to pick up from being close to Luke was that the Force was strong with him. He hadn't been as close to him at all since then. So obviously Vader didn't simply sense that the pilot was his son (and magically divine his given name as well), but it was information that they had intercepted at one point prior to this frantic search. "What?! His name is Luke Skywalker? Force trained? Tagging along with Obi-Wan?" So to make it seem like they just now figured it out makes absolutely no sense, even if, according to George, Vader was just lying about it. I've already said that the way it exists in canon, there's no way that Vader could have simply sensed the information through the Force, and, had he done so, I'm sure there would have been a lot of questions about where this information came from, which would undoubtedly get back to the Emperor. So, similarly, had Vader managed to find this information through "normal" means... once again, he couldn't have just hidden it. And he didn't just hide it.

I'm sorry. This is getting pretty lengthy. I'm getting tired, so maybe I'm rambling. I'm done now.

This is what I've been fearing ever since it was first announced. That they were simply going to paint away the "Episode IV: A New Hope." And sure enough, every worst case scenario comes to fruition. Okay, so I'm definitely not buying these releases. If the picture quality had been shown to be halfway decent, I probably would have bought it. Had it just been them relegating it to the second disc as bonus material, I most likely would have bought it.

But this, this is the one thing I absolutely refuse to tolerate. In their initial press release, that was one of the things they originally touted. I knew there was a reason to get suspicious when that paragraph mysteriously disappeared for a few hours. This is just flat-out lying. This isn't even lying due to minds changing or business practices changing. And I refuse to cater or give my money to a company that is clearly lying. Obviously the footage exists! It was on Empire of Dreams for crying out loud! Wouldn't it have been easier to splice the original crawl in rather than paint out the "most offensive" element?

I'm sure most people won't be able to tell the difference. And I'm sure George and his Merry Men will be snickering about it. "Coming soon! The original theatrical cuts! Or close enough that you George vision-haters won't be able to tell the difference! Nyah-nyah!" Well, suck on this, George. You are not getting another red cent from me until you actually start producing quality products and stop lying about the less-than-quality ones you are releasing.

Yeah, you know what? We can win! Just like everyone else is saying, we can win by buying these DVDs and showing Lucas there is a demand for them. I mean, I know it would convince me that something's wrong when I suddenly get a huge influx of money from angry fans saying, "Ha! I sure showed you! Here's my money! That'll teach you. Maybe next time, after that stinging punishment I gave you, you'll get it right!"

Right...

If this new news is true, and the picture is as bad as they claim, screw this. I'm not buying it. Beat Lucas by giving him money? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Heh, I had a feeling you were going to say that. Now, if it was LSD giving people "super powers", maybe that would be cause for concern. ^_^ But, anyway, like I said, the majority of the show's audience wouldn't know what morphine was. The ones who were old enough would know better. People just worry too much.

Ah, I used to love Mighty Marijuana Power Rangers.
