Is the lack of quality in art a kind of art form?

The one Scruffy is talking about is Batman and Robin released in 1949. Personally, I prefer the 1943 Batman, as it's the one I grew up on. Plus, the fact that it's something of a war propaganda film with a lot of anti-Japanese slurs makes it something of a humorous guilty pleasure.

Anyway, both serials are on DVD.

Honestly, he shouldn't have been a character in the prequels at all. The screen time he had in AOTC was just embarrassing, especially his lines. "What a drag!" "I'm quite beside myself!" I'm a fan of puns myself, but there was just no subtlety there. The only way they could have made it more obvious that the point was, "Hey, we're telling a joke! Laugh!" would have been if the words "CUE LAUGHTER" had flashed on and off on the screen in big red letters while he was saying that.

Honestly, I've done it before on long-running threads. Like Rankings, I once went all the way back to the beginning, long before I was around, just to see what you guys were talking about back then and see the "I Am Ready for the Trials" milestones hit by people now in the top 10! It was fun.

Don't misunderstand me. I was definitely thinking of you when I wrote that. And by that I meant that I thought he didn't actually get a chance to do anything horrible. But at the time I wrote that, after reading your earlier post, I was under the impression that he simply told you things about your daughter, which is horrible enough. I assumed she had no idea about the whole messy affair. I had no idea he actually contacted your daughter directly. That's beyond low. That's disgusting and vile. Here I thought he was just an annoying troll who talked dirty, but I had no idea he'd actually done anything that bad. In light of this, I certainly take back that he didn't do any real harm. Please forgive me.

See above (unless you are referring to a troll banning himself .)

Heh, yeah, I was referring to a troll banning himself. Sorry the same thing happened to you, but obviously Jay sorted it out since you're not a troll. ^_^

Geez. Who really thought that Han blasting Greedo was bad to begin with? I never did. I mean, his life was on the line, for crying out loud! Han definitely does have a character arc, but I really don't think it's tied into that scene all that much. I mean, do you think the ROTJ Han would put up with that shit either? Or would Yoda in ROTS when he chopped those clones' heads off? It's just common sense and looking out for yourself. But apparently to Lucas it's wrong... unless you're a green Sonic the Hedgehog.

By the way, could anybody post a transcript of the article? I'm interested in reading it.

Weird. I wonder why they changed it... or at the very least, why they had Qui-Gon go into Tatooine and have Obi-Wan stay on the ship and do nothing the whole time. Wouldn't it have least made more sense if Qui-Gon had been, "Hey, apprentice. I'm gonna stay on the air-conditioned ship and protect the people. You go out into the barren wilderness and try to fix our ship, okay?"

The Wikipedia article links to a site with the video. I almost watched it last night, but I decided that I probably shouldn't so close to bedtime. I don't know. Part of me wants to watch it, part of me thinks (probably rightfully so) that it will be extremely disturbing. Sigh, I probably will watch it soon anyway. I just can't keep myself away...

Don't overreact. It was an analogy, not a direct comparison.

Which I, for one, understood. I think Jay was simply saying that those of us who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.

Yeah, I agree with Jay and ADM. There's no harm done in talking about AWK, and it's better to get things out in the open than to stifle them. And I agree with Jay that by refusing to talk about him, we've given him power over us, similar to the whole Voldemort thing.

I also like the Holocaust analogy. Especially to the people who don't agree that they can be "compared", I agree. Putting the two situations together like that makes it really obvious that it's silly to take AWK so seriously. He was just a little punk who liked to stir up trouble. And now he's gone. Fortunately, there was no real harm done.

No, I think most of us feel the same way I do. He was a good character, but he detracted from Obi-Wan's established character by doing all the things and acting in all the ways that should have been Obi-Wan.

What do you mean specifically by this?

I thought the relationship between those two was definately one if not the only saving grace of TPM. I enjoyed how Obi-Wan was clearly on the edge of becoming a Knight, however we still saw his character learn and be somewhat defiant infront of his master and thus become more fleshed out in that sense. For him to be the Master right away could have worked but it was more interesting to see him earning his stripes and thus allow the audience to see how he attained the rank of Jedi Knight.

I'm not saying it didn't come across well, and it wasn't enjoyable. I'm just saying that, based on what we heard in the original trilogy, Qui-Gon essentially is Obi-Wan, and Obi-Wan is just somebody else. Qui-Gon does all the things and acts the way that Old Ben described himself in the OT. Qui-Gon found Anakin. Qui-Gon was immediately impressed with Anakin. Qui-Gon tried to take it upon himself to train Anakin without the approval of the council. It was Obi-Wan who disliked Anakin. It was Obi-Wan who tried to reign his master in. It was Obi-Wan who told Qui-Gon to follow the council. It was Obi-Wan who said the boy was dangerous. See what I'm getting at? Like I said, it's not bad from a dramatic standpoint. Their relationship was one of the good things about the prequels, but it just doesn't make any sense.

Whoah. I had no idea about that. This must have been after the second time he was banned since you were generally cordial to him when he came back and started getting his act together somewhat (soon before the final meltdown). But that's the worst offense I've ever heard him perpetrate. That's horrible.

Sorry, this thread probably should die pretty soon, but I just couldn't help but express my shock at that.

Rocky VI
Time
From what I read on Wikipedia (take it how you will), it will be called Rocky Balboa. In the modern age, a sports channel made simulated matchup between boxing champions and pit the young Rocky against the current champ, some black dude with a stupid name. Oh, wait, I remember. His name is Mason "The Line" Dixon. Rocky sees the match and decides to get back into boxing to make the simulated match a reality.
