Do you REALLY think there will be remastered versions of the OOT or whatever? I don't.
Time
Lucas will continue to remaster the movies until he is happy with everything (I hope 2007 will be it)

But what if it isn't? What if he continues to tinker with them every year, releasing the latest version of his original vision with his tinkering and obvious flaws that he refuses to even acknowledge as if he thinks you're too stupid to recognize it for what it is? Are you simply going to toss away every "inferior" version, even though a year ago, you thought it was the kickassinest, da bombiest version you've ever seen? Or is there going to become a point where you say, "Actually, I like the April 2012 version a lot better than the September 2012 version. Why should I change? Why won't he release the April 2012 version anymore?"

And does it ever occur to you that having this many versions of a single movie is completely absurd? That's why I'm against changing movies in the first place. Why should there be five different versions of Casablanca when the original one will suffice? Why go back and try to change the past? You've made your movie. You had your shot. Now it exists. Now it's time to move on to your next project. I would think that having multiple versions compete against each other would be bad from a business perspective anyway, because it splits your fans' loyalties, but Lucas has managed to parlay it, through deception and stealth, into a great business opportunity. Like Sifo-Dyas said, it's not about visions or improving or connecting the trilogies. It's about milking the cash cow again by never releasing a complete version of anything. It's always a work in the making.

And why on earth would you want to delude yourself into thinking that a 30 year old movie is brand new by adding a whole bunch of new technology, etc. into it. The Back to the Future box set has great picture quality up to today's standards, but there's no attempt to make us believe that it was made in 2002 rather than 1984-85! That's just silly. If Lucas had wanted the movies to be watched in numerical order, he would have written and made then in numerical order. It's that simple.

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
Once again, I agree. And another thing I just realized I'm glad about is how the presentation of the menus does not scream bonus disc. It doesn't have the Star Wars logo with a huge roman numeral behind it and a tiny, tiny title underneath. They have the REAL TITLES with no episode numbers in sight! It doesn't refer to itself as a bonus disc. It has Play Movie, Chapters, Options, and Special Features, just like a regular DVD would. They're clean and simple and not redundant and half as long as the movie like the SE discs. If not for the cover art of the disc referring to it as a bonus disc and having the new logos, it would be perfect. But just watching the actual disc, you'd never know it was supposed to be supplementary material, and I'm glad someone had the balls to make it like that.

I wouldn't quite phrase it that way, I feel the same. If it has a good release of the OOT, then I'll but it and be interested in Star Wars and Lucasfilm products again. Otherwise, my answer is the same as it will be to all LFL products, with the possible exception of Indy 4, until I see an OOT DVD release: "that's nice."

And no burned in subtitles!!

I thought we wanted burned in subtitles. The lack of that is what's screwing everybody over.

Greedo subtitles outside the 16:9 frame
Time
All of the Star Wars discs have this problem. Or I call it a problem. For some reason, they prefer it this way. Even the '93 laserdiscs had them outside of the frame, but at least they used the cool original font rather than this gross crap they use now. I don't know why they don't just burn the damn subtitles into the image. It really pisses me off that they don't. I wonder if there is someway I could edit the subtitle font out of the bootlegs I have now and somehow put them into the frame of the DVD release image. Probably not, but maybe there's some technically-minded person who can dig something out of that last sentence.

Try to take it easy with the Lucas bashing.

There are many frauds and liars in the world..and many of them are doing REAL damage to the world. Complaining about Lucas and how "oh so terriibllee" he is on a forum, is just as dorky and loseresque as it gets.

Well, if I was on a forum about politics, I'd complain about frauds and liars who do real damage to the world. But I'm on a forum about Star Wars, so I complain about liars and frauds who do damage to the Star Wars world. Quite a stretch, I know, but, believe it or not, that's how it works.

I don't know, CO...when you put it like that, maybe I should get it...damn, you're making me doubt myself now....I certainly would love it if this outsold the 2004 release. I would giggle my ass off at that one....

Lucas is a businessman....he can't ignore those numbers....original vision or not.

Yeah, that's one of the things that makes me happy about this set. Any time I get feeling like I've been ripped off by buying this subpar release, I keep telling myself that even a non-anamorphic grainy transfer of the OOT is better than his anamorphic 5.1 SE mess, and hopefully it's driving him crazy to realize that I'm not the only one who thinks that.

About the graphic novels, it's interesting, but they kind of petered out around the ROTJ release. Marvel took the first two adaptations in their own direction, with their own interpretation of the script and including many deleted scenes. The ROTJ has nearly verbatim dialogue to the movie, includes nothing that wasn't in the movie, and condenses a lot of stuff that was, making it a much shorter read. But the compiled version makes up for it by having several pages of artwork by McQuarrie, Freeborn, and others.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?

Yeah, especially since you wouldn't watch Episode I until after the original trilogy anyway.

I can't agree more. The covers look great. Especially when you turn it on the back, and you have the original posters and the retro font. And then you pop the disc in and get the retro menus. I love the fact that they're animated but simple. And I love the fact that there's no emphasized episode number. It's just the old logos on a DVD menu. Can't say I ever saw that coming. As interesting as the SE menus were, they were just too damn complicated and got very old after the first few times. Plus, there's no way menus as simple as these can give away ANY real plot elements.

It's all the Star Wars I'll ever need, but I still feel that the prequels, inferior as they are, shouldn't have been bastardized, especially not right out the gate. And since I have them, I'd much rather have the theatrical versions than have to live through the thought of more OCD Lucas tinkering. After all, the latter two prequels never did get a home release of their original versions.
