Yeah, but Lucas doesn't want to face that truth.

I also think the reason was if it was the main release, it would've had to have been given better treatment. When people complain about the treatment and quality of this release, all Lucas has to say is, "Well the SEs are the main feature and we just included this for an added extra value to our fans." In fact, LFL has even used the word "Value" in one of their trailers. We all know that value typically means "good enough for the $."

Yes. I totally agree. Had he put this as the front and center or lone component of this release, then he most definitely would have been slaughtered for releasing such a crappy product. As bonus material, key word bonus, then we should feel lucky we're getting it at all... even though it's the only thing we want and not the so-called main feature.

Do you REALLY think there will be remastered versions of the OOT or whatever? I don't.

Which is what I love about that set. No attempt to digitally alter anything. Wires are all there. Original miniatures are still used. "To Be Continued..." taken out. Trailer for Part III in there. There is nothing about that set that isn't perfect! And there is nothing about that set that reeks of revisionist history. Those are the movies. The end. And when Universal misframed them, they didn't claim it was a deliberate creative decision. They did a free recall and replacement. It might have been a bit expensive and troublesome for them, but it sure made me respect them a lot more than I respect Lucas and Fox.

WOW! I had no idea about this until just now. I just checked my discs and they're apparently misframed (I have the box set from 2002). I called the number just now and imagine my surprise when someone answered. They took down all my information and are sending me the return envelope. That's awesome!

Wow, I am amazed that they're still doing that nearly four years after the DVDs were first released. Even more props to Universal for that! Take notes, Lucas!

How Lucas can satisfy the fans.

Well, I suppose that if it was in black and white, no one could complain about a botched SE color correction job, now could they? ^_~

And I'm sure in theatres, the subtitles weren't outside of the picture. But thanks for informing me.

The sub-titles were optically printed onto the theatrical prints, into the frames. If you look on eBay, you can sometimes find the 70mm cels with the subtitles on the film. It's usually the ROTJ ones that you find, from Jabba's palace. I have a large collection of the cels, but so far I don't own any with the subtitles.

If they were optically printed onto the theatrical prints, how would they not be on the cels? Or are you saying that you don't happen to own any frames that contain scenes with subtitles?

And I'm fairly certain that Denis Lawson is still around. At the very least, he recorded dialogue as Wedge Antilles for the 2001 game Rogue Leader.

And if they were burned-in, that trouble wouldn't exist because they'd be safely in the image (where they're supposed to be) no matter what kind of television setup you have. And how about with the nice original font?

Best of both worlds, they could've generated the subtitles on the frame. That way, you get the original, unaltered theatrical experience, and those fluent in Rodian can turn them off.

Because so many of us are, huh? ^_~ But I see what you're saying. I mean, I suggest burnt-in because that's the one way I'd know for sure that they couldn't screw it up. But if they could get the original font (whatever it is) and get it to stay in the frame and look as though it's actually there and not just something that I can turn on or off, then that would be the best of both worlds.

To me, it seems that, besides Lord of the Rings, the only films that come out of the gate with extended or unrated versions are crappy, raunchy comedies that need that kind of promotion to sell better. Honestly, I don't think any of them are necessary. After all, we have DVD. And with DVD, there's this awesome trend to make deleted scenes available to the general public. That way, you can see the sometimes cool things that just didn't fit in the movie or couldn't be in the movie. Plus, you get the added bonus of feeling like you have extra knowledge that the average Tom, Dick, and Harry don't know. And the director gets to show off footage he may have liked but wasn't able to put in the movie. It's a win-win situation, and you're left with one, simple movie, but you get the extended, unrated stuff as well! How awesome is that? And then fan-editors can make their own versions for the people who want to see what the movie would be like had those scenes been left in!

And thanks for the compliments, Darth_Evil. I wouldn't be surprised if the twice-annual Star Wars fix doesn't indeed become a reality at some point! =P

Wedge and Rogue Squadron (in the EU)
Time

And now for something a little different, at a time when the boards are filled with threads about the new DVD release. Anybody here at all versed in EU? Hell, it’s not even quite EU as it comes up in the movies, too, but anyway:

Does anybody know when exactly Wedge replaces Luke as commander of Rogue Squadron? I’m playing Rogue Leader right now, and, based on that game, it seems like Wedge takes over right after the Battle of Hoth. Hell, it’s almost like as soon as Luke goes down, Wedge is like, “Well, I guess I’ll be the leader now, nyah, nyah!” Was there ever a point where Luke officially passes over the reigns, or does he just get so preoccupied with his Jedi training that he stops attending meetings and is simply replaced?
