originaltrilogy.com/fanedits.com survey - results now posted
Time

Hmm, I can't get any of the clickables to work.

Once again, my combination of Windows 98 and IE6=FAIL.

I also don't quite fit the mold for the first question, though.  I was going to settle for trying to find Star Wars laserdisc preservation as that almost immediately became a goal after I found this place, but I actually ran into this site through my research of the (then) upcoming 2004 boxset.

puppet yoda or cgi yoda
Time

I've said it before, and I'll say it again.  The main failing point of the CG Yoda was the fact that it somehow lacked Stuart Freeborn's eyes.  And I find that especially strange since their tests visible in the AOTC documentaries show a CG Yoda that actually does have the appropriate look to his eyes.  So why they intentionally altered the most significant and recognizable of all facial features is beyond me.  It's all in the eyes.

Okay, if Im wrong on this then I apologise but it really wasnt the focus of my point.

I'm pleasantly surprised and impressed at how easily you could admit you were wrong (a lot of people have a problem with that).  However, I don't think I missed the point of your post, or at least a point of your post.  While you'll never be able to convince me that the SEs are superior or that Lucas was correct in doing so, and I'll never be able to convince you of the opposite, another point you focused on was what those of us not in your shoes should do.  Not only did it come across as elitist but was also just inaccurate.  I have a hard time believing you were really serious when you said a 20 year old VHS on a mono television is comparable to the way it was originally released in theatres.  Even today's HD doesn't compare to the quality of actual film.  DVDs don't come close, so of course an old tape wouldn't.  And, as I already pointed out, the mono mix came later as well.  So, yes, it is a big slap in the face of fans to be told something like that.

Nice balls, sure... just a completely inaccurate post.

Yeah, puggo pretty much covered the video inaccuracies.  I guess I'll do the audio since that statement is wrong too.  Can't have misinformation spreading, can we?  The stereo was the first release, and the mono was the last of the original three sound mixes to be released.  Anecdotal evidence states that George was working on the mono mix around the time the film was released.

Just wanted to point that out to you.

Yet ANOTHER DVD boxed set...*sigh*
Time

I honestly think they're too afraid to put all six movies together because of how polarized the fanbase is.  There are a lot of people who only like the original trilogy and don't want to waste money on three other movies they don't want to watch.  And then there are those people who only like Star Wars who wouldn't want to buy five other movies they didn't like.  So I think continuing to separate them into trilogies is a safe marketing move on their part, despite what George would want us to believe about how they're supposed to be a hexology instead of two trilogies.

The Special Edition wasn't needed.

People need appreciate the special editons more and the prequel trilogy more.

This is a line I've seen you use more than once, but I still see no reason anybody should.  They are highly appreciated, more than they should be, because they are Star Wars.  I admit that I watched them and used to like them, and I loved being able to see the trilogy in theatres (since I was born in 1986).  However, if George had simply done a theatrical re-release on the 20th anniversary without it being a special edition, it would have been a similar success without being so divisive.  There have been near admissions that the special editions were simply testing grounds to see what kinds of technology could be used in the prequels, and that idea just makes me sick.  So I agree with the title of this thread:  the SE's weren't needed.

When and in what format was the first time you saw Star Wars?
Time

I had a very Star Wars Christmas in 1995 when I was nine years old.  The Faces set was being hyped like crazy, and, even though I'd never seen the movies before, I had a general idea about some of the ideas and characters (mostly through growing up watching Muppet Babies on Saturday mornings).  That limited knowledge and the huge hype of these releases was enough to get me to want the movies for Christmas.  It turns out that both my dad and mom bought me the boxset without realizing the other had.  My mom ultimately took hers back.  So I got the movies along with nearly all of the first set of the new action figures.  I even remember the order in which I happened to unwrap them:  Ben (Obi-Wan) Kenobi, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, R2-D2, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and Han Solo.  Looking back, it would have really sucked if I had not taken to Star Wars as well as I had, and it was kinda going out on a limb to have such a Star Wars-heavy Christmas when nobody really had any idea if I'd end up liking it or not!

But, in case you were wondering, I did!

How many times do you watch Star Wars (OT,OOT, GOUT) - over a period of time?
Time

I usually watch them at least three or four times a year.  It really depends on when I get into a Star Wars kick.  Right now I'm in one, and I watched the trilogy twice in a row, but now I'm kicking back and reading for the first time the X-Wing series of novels... and I must say they're kicking a whole lot of ass!

Feb. 2008 - In Defense of the Phantom Menace
Time

I thought it was an interesting defense, and I agree with parts of it.  I did find it an interesting point he made, though, that Shmi seemed to have no desire to escape her own slavery.  For a while, I thought he had a point, but then I realized that the movie actually did address why that wouldn't be possible.  The slaves have that chip in them that can be activated to blow them up if they escape.  Remember that Anakin was working on a sensor to find where his was?  I wonder if he ever found it?  It seems to me that he didn't have time to get it removed before Qui-Gonn took him away.  You'd think, that if Watto was really pissed for Qui-Gonn beating him at betting that he'd just wait until Anakin was on their ship and then just blow him up out of spite!

Eh, but I don't know.  Watto seemed to have a soft spot for "Li'l Ani," so maybe he wouldn't do that.  But if Shmi had tried to make a run for it... well, the world would have more Tusken Raiders, now wouldn't it?

Trivial Pursuit: STAR WARS ORIGINAL TRILOGY (Part III)
Time

Geez, that's what happens when you miss an entire day.  There are really no questions left, are there, except for the Jedi individuality thing.  That being the case, I'm going to go out on a limb that I think might have been answered incorrectly due to a spelling error.

What is another name for the spearlike "gaffi stick" the Sand People wield?

I believe it's gardaffi.

Oh, but about that Luke action figure... I don't know when the first one ever came out (like if one came out during the movies' original runs), but I got really excited when I heard news that Kenner was releasing a "Bespin Luke Skywalker" figure in 1998.  It has him in his cargo jacket outfit, and his hand is removable.  That's the earliest one that I know about (and have) and it predates Attack of the Clones by four years.
