Video Games - a general discussion thread

Yeah, I still love my N64.  I'm so glad I chose that over PlayStation.  Eventually, I got a PS2 and was able to get the handful of PlayStation games I missed out on the previous generation anyway.  But it's funny how much crap gets flung the N64's way (and let's be honest... it did dethrone Nintendo from the top spot until Wii came out), but a lot of games that are still considered "the best of the series" came out on the N64, like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time.  Starfox 64 is also amazing.  Super Smash Bros. originated there.  The only real stinker I have in my library is that horrible Yoshi's Story.  Yeesh.  Nearly killed that series off in one fell swoop.

I agree with sky on the crappiness of MMOs. I like to keep my gaming life and my social life seperate. If I want to interacts with other real people, I will go out and do so in person... or at OT.com... but yeah, I don't like MMOs. I prefer a solo experience with an engaging storyline, and one that I can revisit years down the road and enjoy all over again if I so choose, and doesn't require monthly fees and the sacrifice of a massive portion of my life.

Couldn't have put it better myself.  Online is the big thing in gaming right now, but I'm just having a hard time getting on the bandwagon.  I have managed to do some of the polling stuff on my Wii.  Other than that, it's hard for me to get involved in something that I know requires the popularity of other people to stay active.  I still own nearly every game I've ever owned, and it's just depressing to think that, ten years from now, if I try to play, for example, Mario Kart Wii online that hardly anyone's gonna be around to play with.  It seems people only buy games for the short term experience nowadays and sell them as soon as they finish them.  I always return to my old games, and that's why I have a hard time getting excited about online multiplayer and MMOs.

Hmm, I'm pretty familiar with the entirety of Dragon Ball in its original form, but I don't really recall the scene where Goku grabs Grandpa Gohan's nuts as he writhes in pain (unless it happened in filler).  It was alluded to that he used Gohan's crotch as a pillow when he was young, but, uh, I don't recall any painful grabbing...

Other than that, I agree that FUNimation did every possible wrong thing when it came to any of the DB series.

Can GhostAlpha26 just be banned?
Time

Well, I don't think that GhostAlpha should be banned, but I do admit it's been annoying me for the past few months that I can't read any thread he's posted in.  And Firefox isn't an option for me as far as I can tell because I'm running Windows 98, and any attempts I've made to download it have failed.

Much like the threads fail when GhostAlpha posts in them.  It would be nice if GhostAlpha would remove whatever Microsoft Word crap is in his signature line so poor, technologically-deficient people such as myself won't be deprived in any other ways.  Just a thought...

We should sue George Lucas.
Time

Makes me wonder, though:  if someone like that goes to another message board, do its posters roll their eyes and say, "Geez, one of those crazies from original trilogy is spewing crap about George," similar to how a lot of us say, "Another one of those crazies from TF.n is here gushing crap about Lucas," when an over-zealous person with the opposite view shows up?  Obviously, KillLucas isn't "one of us," but the rest of the Star Wars fan community would probably think so if he came wandering in.  I don't know.  Just a semi-creepy thought that crossed my mind.

I love TOS, and I like what I've seen of TNG.  Can't sit through an episode of it, though, C3PX?  I'm saddened.  I, too, enjoy the overly naval aspects that Meyer added to the movies (gotta love those double-breasted jackets!), but in some ways, a lot of episodes of the series give me the same feeling.

But I have to admit that one episode I saw last summer and liked ("The Deadly Years") was one I watched a few weeks ago and just couldn't stand.  It's fun to watch them get all old, but the plot was just ridiculous.  "Hey, the most important officers on this ship are getting older by the second and could die in a few minutes, so let's hold a lengthy competency hearing to find out if the clearly senile Kirk is fit for command!  Let's throw in a useless romance that goes nowhere just for the hell of it.  And, for no logical reason, let's cross into the Romulan Neutral Zone. I'm sure nothing bad can come of that!"  Yeesh.

EDIT:  Oh, and just in case Ziz is still taking my earlier posts seriously, I'd like you to meet my friend, Sarcastic Hyperbole.  I'm sure you two will get along great.  ^_~

Geez, negative 1.  Stop being so... negative.  I might be inclined to agree with you that awards don't necessarily mean anything, but to try to argue that editing, set design, costume design, etc. had absolutely no influence on what kind of movie Star Wars ended up being is just absurd.  Just because you can't tell doesn't mean it's not important.

And, well, hello, Biff.  I see you wandered over from your own franchise to spew some semi-coherent vitriol.  Now that you've done your patriotic duty and told us nerds off, I suppose you have no other reason to be here, right?

remember that conversation from Clerks movie?

Yep, I bet those poor guys were mopping even during the battle.

"We've analyzed their attack, sir, and there is a danger. Should I have your ship standing by?"

Tarkin: "Evacuate? In our moment of triumph? I think you overestimate their chances!"

Worker: "Um, can I have your seat then?"

Tarkin: "Get back to work, scum!"

It's funny (not a ha-ha, but a strange context) to hear you talk about how you seem to be the only person who still continues to "like" Star Wars, and I'm sure others will agree.  While maybe we share the opinion of critics and more mainstream outlets that Star Wars is generally deteriorating in quality, in terms of Star Wars message board fandom, we have been the outcasts.  While I've never posted at any of them, I've heard countless anecdotal evidence that it's a ban-worthy offense to raise practically any criticism of the series at the official site or TF.net.  It's interesting to get a different perspective.  But I still think you're wrong when you say that all we do is bitch and complain.  While a fair share of it does go on, this place is pretty laid back.  But since there's quite a bit of new stuff coming out right now, there's bound to be some mixed opinions that lead to arguments that increase tempers.  But if we didn't love Star Wars beyond rational limits, we wouldn't be wasting our time posting here, now would we?  ^_^

Geez, how can anyone possibly hate musicals, sky?!  Eh, whatever.  You're right that Avatar kicks ass, though.

As for this cartoon.  I haven't seen it.  I saw a few commercials for both the movie and the series.  Some of the commercials are pretty good.  Honestly, I'm never home when the show is playing, and I really don't even remember when it's on.  This thread is giving me the slightest desire to check it out, just to see what everyone's talking about, but, honestly, not enough to go to any trouble to find it.  If I happen to catch it on the tube, I'll probably keep on it just so I can have an opinion.  Otherwise, I'm completely meh about this whole thing, sorry to say.

I suppose that for me, it comes right down to the fact that the Clone Wars was really cool... as an idea.  It imbued this sense of mystery and history when Ben first mentioned it in Star Wars.  But I honestly got my fill from what I saw of it in the prequels.  And just maybe two television series and a movie about it are overkill.  Geez, I suppose that came out a bit more "hater"ish than I expected it to.  Like I said, I'm not a hater (because I haven't seen it), I'm just mostly apathetic.

Hey, don't sweat it, guys.  They may be annoying, but I'm still relatively glad they're here.  Like you said, people like them kicked people like us out of nearly every other Star Wars forum.  The fact that people like them can post here freely is what puts our forum head and shoulders above the rest.

So you can add Adywan's new Death Star battle to the Original Theatrical release of Episode IV, opps that would be the 78 release. I meant the orginal theatrical release of Star Wars.

And just so you know, Episode IV wasn't added to the movie until 1981, not 1978.  The concept of an Episode IV was conceived in 1978 but not actually implemented in the films until after The Empire Strikes Back introduced its own episode numbering.

You probably think of me now as a nit-picker since this is the second time I've pointed out a minor factual inaccuracy in one of your posts.  I'm not trying to be.  I just feel it's important for the fans to know the facts and not spread misinformation.  And I especially feel it's important to have your facts correct if you're going to complain about how most of us here express our fandom. ^_~
