What The Last Jedi should've been/could've been. (likely TLJ spoilers)

Here’s what the last Jedi should’ve/could’ve been:

The movie opens with star destroyers… then Snoke’s gigantic ship appears and overshadows them… masked Kylo enters Snoke’s throne room where he is reprimanded for being bested by Rey. He belittles Kylo, which angers him and makes him more powerful. Kylo tells Snoke the Resistance now has the map to Skywalker. Snoke tells Kylo that Luke must die and to bring Rey to him. No exceptions, no excuses.

Luke’s Island. Luke meets Rey, who tells him about Kylo… Luke realizes Kylo is his doing and senses Rey’s potential with the Force. Feels compelled to train her to confront Kylo.
Luke trains Rey alla Yoda in ESB. Yoda and Obi wan appear to Luke and Rey to tell them the dangers of confronting Kylo and the seduction of the dark side. He explains to her the depth of the power of the Force. During training, we find Luke is having nightmares at night… tempted by the darkside, which is why he went into hiding… to stay away from people he cares about, in order to prevent them from being hurt by him. Luke, by the way, has mastered the force, which makes him very dangerous and scared to death of what could happen if he turned.

The Resistance have escaped the base from TFA and are now traveling to an abandoned rebel outpost on the Salt Planet. En route, the first order finds them and attacks them. Space battle ensues. Resistance bomb run on the Destroyers and the Dreadnought. The Resistance succeeds in blowing up the Dreadnought, but most of the bombers get destroyed. Amidst the First Order fighters in one particularly daring and skilled fighter - MASKED Kylo Ren, who destroys multiple Resistance ships, most importantly… Leia’s ship… killing her. When it happens, Luke feels it (while training Rey on his island) and falls to the ground.
Luke is sent in a comatose state. Rey doesn’t understand what’s happening but feels compelled to care for him and stay by his side. While caring for unconscious Luke, Anakin’s ghost appears to Rey and gives her the history of the Chosen One and Luke and Leia.
Rey has a vision of her friends in trouble and feels compelled to leave Luke with Chewie and R2, in order to confront Kylo and Snoke. Anakin’s ghost warns her not to go, but she leaves anyway.

Rey flies the falcon to snokes ship and allows herself and the ship to be taken aboard Snoke’s ship. Kylo meets her and takes her to Snoke. Snoke tries to seduce Rey. He tells her the history of Palpatine and Vader, thus revealing he is Darth Plageus and has orchestrated all events leading to this moment. Kylo senses Snoke has used him to get to Rey. His anger takes over as he attacks Snoke suddenly. Rey takes advantage of the moment and joins Kylo against Snoke. They fight Snoke’s guards first. Once the guards are all killed, they face Snoke, who uses force lightning as well as a kyber crystal ring that creates a saber made of lightning. They have an epic duel against Snoke but struggle to get the best of him. Snoke almost kills Kylo, but Rey saves him by cutting off Snoke’s ring hand and then beheading him. They both narrowly escape. Rey and Kylo share a moment where Rey tells Kylo to join the light side, there is good in him. He responds by telling her to rule the galaxy with him – side by side. Rey declines and escapes. Rey must now escape the ship. She fights a number of stormtroopers in the process, and then fights Phasma. Poe and Finn show up with a group of fighters to attack the ship and rescue Rey. They succeed. Phasma lives.

They bring Rey to the Resistance base, now on the Salt Planet.

Hux confronts Kylo, who tells him he is now the Supreme Leader – Hux challenges him. Hux is then force choked to death. Kylo is the new leader of the first order. Kylo gives speech to first order telling them the Supreme Leader has been assassinated by the Resistance and he will lead them in revenge.

Kylo tracks Poe, Finn and Rey and shows up to confront them on the Salt planet with walkers, star destroyers in the low atmosphere and the whole first order infantry in an epic ground battle.

The Resistance gets shredded. Finn dies flying into the battering ram, keeping the First Order from infiltrating the base. Most of the Resistance fighters on the battlefield are decimated. Rey is the unofficial leader of the the Resistance as she puts up the best fight on the battlefield, slashing up troopers left and right, deflecting blaster fire to allow her surviving friends to retreat back to the base. Just as it seems she is overwhelmed, Kylo orders everyone to stop firing on her and demands he be brought down to her. They face off… he tells Rey what could’ve been if she had joined him and how foolish she is. He tells her if she won’t join him, she must be destroyed. They have a showdown. Kylo gets the best of Rey and cuts her hand off… while she’s on the ground, he lifts his saber to finish her off – “you’ve left me no choice. this is the end… cousin…”

…then all of a sudden Kylo is lifted off the ground by a Force choke. Pan over to Luke. Now in his all black garb, he’s back and using Vader’s force choke. He tells Kylo it didn’t have to be like this. He let’s Kylo down and tries to reason with him. They have a heated exchange about the past, about Leia and Han… about the Dark side… Kylo tells Luke it’s time for the Jedi to end. They have an EPIC lightsaber duel where Luke DESTROYS Kylo and eventually cuts all his limbs off. In a rage from the fight, Luke lifts the walkers into the sky and slams them onto the ground crushing them, then pulls the star destroyers out of the sky, as he has flashbacks of Leia and Han, as well as Rey training. There are explosions all around. He is overcome by anger, destroying everything. Throwing troopers around like ragdolls. Through the smoke, Rey is yelling to Luke to stop and come back to the light. Luke collapses on the smokey battlefield. Rey holds Luke’s body on the ground, as the Resistance scramble over to them…. Next scene, they are in the Rebel base recovering…. Rey gets a new hand. Luke isn’t shown (but he lives on for episode 9) - Cut to Kylo in a bacta tank with guards. Movie ends.

Prologue: The Chosen One

Hey Guys, just fyi - there is a 2.0 version out. I’ve cleaned up Palpatine’s dialogue to Maul, gave Anakin a few lines saying goodbye to his mother (makes more sense) as well as added the “qui gon destroys probe droid” deleted scene - fits perfectly into this story. A few other minor changes…

For the guys who watched the first version, sorry - scrap it and check this one out! 😃

Prologue: The Chosen One

Anakin Starkiller said:

If it’s a prologue, does that mean all the other episodes have their number decreased by one? (Ex: Episode II becomes Episode I)

Actually, it’s a prologue to my other edit “Lord Vader: A Star Wars Story” which is a fanedit of Episode 3 re-interpreted as a “star wars story” standalone movie. So in my edits, there are no episodes… the prequels have become the Vader story and the Chosen One prologue.

Prologue: The Chosen One

I just finished a new edit of a ‘short film’ fanedit entitled “The Chosen One” using TPM footage (and a brief scene from a fanfilm). My goal was to create a quick prologue telling Anakin’s origin without all the bullshit. This footage is completely rearranged to create a whole new (very simple yet interesting) plot.

In a nut shell: Both the Jedi and the Sith sense a vergeance/disturbance in the Force and they are in a race to find the boy.

This is the story I always felt it should’ve been… super simple. You’ll notice the first few scenes are the same things happening on the Light Side and Dark Side of the Force… they both feel it and are compelled to take action. This sets up a much more meaningful confrontation between the Jedi and Sith at the end.

The whole edit is about 25 minutes and very fast-paced. It’s the best I could do with the material from the movie. The goal was to create Anakin’s origin story in a short film that can be watched and understood by someone who has never seen Star Wars before; and for those who know the films well, it’s a fun quick abridged version of what happened using only the ‘good parts.’ Oh, and Anakin barely speaks 😃 In addition to eliminating bad acting, i think it adds eccentricity and innocence to the character - the fact that the Jedi show up and take him from his mother makes it a bit dramatic, which explains why later in life, he’s tormented by thoughts of missing/losing his mother and legit excuse for his contempt for the Jedi later on. The lightsaber fight, which is obviously the climax, takes up about half of the run time.

The story goes:

  • Qui Gon tells the Jedi council he has encountered a vergeance in the Force.
  • They postulate it may be ‘the Chosen One’ and tell him to bring the boy to them.
  • Obi wan warns Qui Gon he senses something… elusive. Qui gon tells him to relax.
  • Palpatine tells Darth Maul there is a disturbance and that Anakin must not become a Jedi.
  • Qui Gon and Obi Wan travel to Tatooine to get the boy from his mother.
  • Darth Maul arrives on Tatooine shortly after and sends out probes to find them.
  • Maul confronts them on their way back and Qui Gon escapes with Anakin.
  • Qui Gon and Obi wan bring Anakin before the council and they test him.
  • The Jedi council concludes he will not be trained and assigns them a mission to accompany the Queen to Naboo.
  • Qui Gon tells Anakin he can’t train him but to shadow him and be mindful.
  • They travel to Naboo as the Queen’s bodyguards where there is a brief skirmish among locals. - While accompanying the Queen, Darth Maul appears and the Jedi confront him.
  • I added Duel of the Fates score to the Obi wan/Maul fight for increased intensity
  • Qui Gon gets killed and tells Obi Wan to train the boy.
  • Obi wan get permission from Yoda to train Anakin.
  • Qui Gon funeral
  • “The Chosen One” title card and credits

The edits to make this happen are extensive, as you’ll see if you watch it. PM me for a link

Lord Vader: A Star Wars Story

Ok, I’ve been working on this edit for a long time now. It started out a personal project because I know there is a good movie buried in ROTS. The objective was to edit ROTS into one enjoyable coherent “A Star Wars Story” movie based on Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side, significantly different from ROTS, to take the place of the prequel trilogy - removing all the superfluous stuff and making it relate better to the OT and RO. L8wrtr’s ‘Dawn of the Empire’ edit has always been my go-to version of ROTS but I wanted to take it a step further, implementing many of his changes, but adding many more of my own. It’s VERY different from ROTS - faster paced and more serious. In my opinion, this is as good as it gets telling the story of Darth Vader with existing material. or PM for a download link.

Some of the MANY Changes:

  • Remove all references to “Darth Vader” or “Vader” or “Darth”
  • New prologue telling Anakin’s abridged history with cuts of Qui Gon telling the council he has found him, young Obi Wan telling Jake Lloyd Anakin he is going to train him and Yoda warning against his training - so we now know who everyone is and how they relate
  • Lord Vader intro title card
  • Open with Obi-Wan and Anakin arriving on Coruscant after Dooku mission - exposition tells all we need to know about events prior
  • Cut Mace’s line about Grievous being a coward and always running and hiding.
  • Re-cut the “I’m Pregnant” scene
  • Transition directly to the balcony scene.
  • Trimmed balcony scene to remove corniness.
  • Anakin’s nightmare is black - no visuals.
  • Cut Anakin’s avoidance in talking to Padme on the lower balcony, trim dialog overall.
  • transition to Anakin missing the briefing scene.
  • Transition from Obi-Wan informing Anakin he’s been summoned to Opera scene.
  • Cut out first half of the Opera scene.
  • Modify Palpatine dialog to remove both ‘Darth’ and ‘midichlorians’
  • Transition directly to Anakin talking to Yoda about his dreams of death.
  • Trim out dialog which makes it difficult to believe Yoda can’t see the underlying problem/threat in Anakin.
  • Transition to Palpatine’s office.
  • Trim Anakin’s hesitancy about promotion.
  • Transition to deleted scene of Yoda, Obi-Wan and Mace (slightly trimmed dialog)
  • Transition to Jedi Council informing Anakin he won’t be a Master
  • Tone down Anakins angry reaction
  • Re-cut reaction shots so that Obi-Wan gives Anakin a disapproving glare, and Anakin sees it.
  • Transition from Obi-Wan delivering Anakin’s assignment to Deleted Scene in Bail’s office (trim dialog)
  • Transition to Gunship carrying Yoda, Mace and Obi-Wan (trim dialog about not trusting Anakin)
  • Transition to Grievous/Palpatine sequence. Uncut.
  • Transition to Yoda on Kashyyk and Jedi Council meeting where Anakin reveals location of Grievous
  • Cut Ki-Adi Mundi stating that a Master with more experience is needed.
  • Cut Yoda almost getting hit.
  • Transition to deleted scene in Padme’s apartment. Trim dialog slightly.
  • Transition to Anakin seeing Obi-Wan off - trim dialog.
  • Transition to sounds of Anakin’s 2nd vision - Anakin senses the future - no visuals.
  • Trim dialog between Anakin and Padme about finding a new power to save her.
  • Transition to Obi-Wan departing Cody and his Star Destroyer
  • Transition to Deleted scene of Palpatine’s office and the petition of the 2000
  • Cut dialog about sensing betrayal in Padme

  • Trim dialog about warriors, now is the time, and is he bringing additional warriors
  • Replace lizard’s squawks with more threatening/less annoying creature-sounds (alla l8wrtr)
  • Cut out squealing Manga-Guard under fallen machinery
  • Re-sequenced dialog between Kenobi and Grievious
  • Cut Grievous taunting Kenobi when he is obviously losing.
  • Cut Obi-Wan’s over-telegraphing his Force-push
  • Cut out droid scream as Grievous runs him over.
  • Replace Lizard audio (alla L8wrtr)
  • Slightly trim dialog between Palpatine and Anakin after Anakin delivers update
  • Tighten Kenobi chasing Grievous, remove lizard audio
  • Cut end of Grievous’ death howl.
  • Slightly trim dialog between Mace and Anakin
  • Speed up Palpatine’s attack on Jedi Masters/trim out silly aspects of Mace/Palpatine fight.
  • Model Palpatine/Mace/Anakin sequence after L8wrtr/Kerr’s version
  • Heavily trim initial dialog between Anakin and Palpatine after Mace is thrown out the window
  • Cut “including your friend Obi-Wan Kenobi”
  • Replace Lizard audio as Kenobi approaches Cody, and is blasted at once Order 66 starts
  • Re-cut and re-score Order 66 - inter-cut Yoda sensing the deaths real-time and cut amount of time it takes Mundi’s and Sacura’s troops to fire on them.

  • Cut and re-sequence initial confrontation between Yoda and Palpatine. No Force-lightening, now throwing Palpatine into a chair, and first half of lightsaber fighting in the office.
  • Cut Anakin and Kenobi fighting on high-wire
  • Completely recut Yoda/Palpatine confrontation
  • Yoda gets up much quicker after being hit by force lightning
  • Yoad/Palpatine Saber duel rearranged
  • Cut Emperor’s reaction time as Yoda hurls a pod back at him
  • Re-cut final Force-lightening stand-off on floating pod. Yoda is overpowered blasted off the pod, falling to the Senate floor while Palpatine remains on the Pod.
  • Cut Anakin ‘lava surfing’ - he leaps right from giant crashing platform to the one Obi wan is on
  • Cut ‘Higher ground’ conclusion, mimic L8wrtr and Corgicar’s quick leap/cut
  • Cut Padme talking to Kenobi in the medical bed of the ship
  • Cut Palpatine and troops looking for Anakin and the order to get a medical capsule
  • Cut Padme’s dying from losing the will to live, she’s just dying.
  • Remove all Padme crying in pain and dialog,
  • THIS IS THE PAY OFF SCENE. Completely recut and rescored ‘Birth of Vader’ scene with new dialogue - Palpatine now says “Anakin… can you hear me?” to which Vader responds “Anakin Skywalker was weak… I destroyed him” (taken from Rebels) - I think this is much more of an emotional moment showing the extent to which Anakin’s mind has really gone off the deep end. Anakin is gone and Darth Vader has completely taken over at this point.
  • Recut and rescored Padme’s funeral - added funeral bells and “across the stars” theme
  • Replace Venator-class Star Destroyer with New VFX shot of TIE fighters and OT Star Destroyers to link up with RO and ANH and infer there were preparations behind the scenes for the Empire… in other words, Palpatine had everything ready for the takeover.
  • Added after-credits scene of young Krennic and Erso on Coruscant… to connect to RO

Why are Vader’s eyes recolored to black instead of having the dark crimson tint from ANH?

Technically, Vader has a few different helmets, each of which have different lenses. The RO and ANH helmet are ‘supposed’ to have the red lenses while the ESB and ROTJ helmets have black. (and who the hell knows about the atrocity Vader in ROTS? Black, I believe… but red from the inside?)

But with all that said, it really doesn’t matter - looks cool either way. I understand why they made them red in RO to match up with ANH, since ROTS was so far off the mark - but in this edit, for some reason, I thought the change to black actually created a cool happy medium with the classic ANH Vader suit, but with the uncharacteristically-ANH polished look and black lenses… this brought it all together for me - a nice mix of classic and new. But it’s really all preference. He’s badass either way… in this case, I liked the change. If we want to see the red lenses, the official version is readily available. 😃

I concur, but it’s feasible to smooth his change of voice (maybe the pitch of the theatrical version could also be altered to make Vader sound less old). I’ll give it a try (but only when the v2.0 of this edit is released in order 😃)

The “Rebels” sources come from which episodes (and what time ?). I like the idea of Vader’s voice in Rebels, who sounds better than in R1.

Here is the clip I referenced - the dialogue is quite appropriate (with tweeking, of course) as Vader is reprimanding the character is this scene. “you lack imagination when it comes to producing results”… another great line. Check it out:

I think the audio change for Vader should only be applied for the Erso section (and thinking about it, there might be a way of removing the reference to Galen without using other Vader audio sources). The pun isn’t great but is what it is (as a Prequel film, it doesn’t really destract with the “No!!!” of his previous appearance).

Original: “I expect you not to rest until you can assure the Emperor that Galen Erso has not compromised this weapon in any way.”

Edit version: “I expect you not to rest until you can assure the Emperor this weapon has not been compromised in any way.”

Don’t know if that would be possible though.

This is definitely possible - I’ve tried that too. Again, just needs some skill and fine-tuning, but i did this test to see if it could work…

I’ve long been a proponent of removing Fett from ROTJ entirely, but I have to say I like the idea of Fett informing Vader about Luke’s presence at Jabba’s palace. If that could be worked out convincingly, I’d be happy.

But if not, I’m still all for axing Fett from ROTJ.

that just might work…

I like that! Is the sail barge hangar background a mockup or from something else?

Calling Vader from Slave 1 might make more sense, as Fett would have a reason to check on his ship once in a while and it’s more private.

The sail barge dock is from battlefront:

I just figured it looked like a nice quiet place to make a ‘phone call’ 😃
