Ideas and Suggestions for :Star Trek The Motion Picture (True Fan Edit)

Here is a big problem with this movie I have only now begun to realize. It's Ilia's acting at the start of the film. She does an outstanding job as the probe Ilia that has a more robotic nature. Problem is, she was acting that way before her transformation. It relay hurts her story line in the film, and that story line is a very big one. I always wondered why I did not feel the least bit of concern or sympathy for her character. I think this is why. She should have projected much more emotionalism, and been more of a I'm bombshell knockout and I know it attitude, not a stiff militant type. She had very little sexapel. She should have had more Seven of Nine...

For what it's worth, has Jacob ever done anything that was clearly 'good' for anyone? Ever?

He paid for Kate's lunch box, He helped Jack get his stuck Apollo candy bar, He gave Hurley a nice guitar case worth about $100 with a wooden Ankh inside (value unknown), he offered the Man in Black (his declared enemy) some of his Fish/Meal (thought of as extreme good manners & saintly in some cultures)... All of these acts would elevate someone to sainthood in my eyes. Pretty kind acts for today's self centered and rude world. And why must we be showered with gifts and benevolent acts by someone for them to be deemed "Good" in our eyes? I would think such materialistic standards and desires would put a person who would set such standards in the mostly evil column. Vanity and avarice have long been considered sins. Maybe the same could be said about the desire for good deeds (positive life changing influences / answered prayers) from a God, Demi-God, or any wish granting Spirit (such as a Genie). The question should be, Has anyone on the Island done anything that was clearly good for Jacob (or The Island)?

Edit: I need to add that I also believe that the flash sideways events we are seeing are a direct result of a loop hole created by Jacob's influence. The flash-sideways alternate reality we see each week was created by Jacob's created time loophole (paradox). In it, Jacob has granted the wish of the Chinese temple master . In that flash-sideways reality the Chinese temple master's  son lives. This is because of Jacob and his influence, and can be considered good. Having and allowing Jacob's loophole to continue to exist is what I believe the battle to come in the last episodes will decide.

I think the Smoke Monster (aka: Zombie Locke) also has created a loophole (think Compass), but so has Jacob. Jacob's loophole was not expected and that is why we are at times seeing some surprise reactions from Zombie Locke. Like when he saw the little Blond Boy, and when Richard told Sun he saw them all die back in 1977. Look at Zombie Locke's reaction to that. How this is going to play out is not known by any side. Now think of the conversation on the beach between MAN in Black (Aka: Smoke Monster and Zombie Locke) about loopholes and progress.

I am editing this project with my new copy of Adobe Premier CS4 master collection. I'm also using  my older version of Adobe Premier Pro version 1.5, as I am more familiar with it.  I would like to focus on the editing and then hand my finished segments out to people here on this forum who would want to work on certain segments that they personally desire to change.  Any effects corrections or changes left over will be taken on by me and my friend, but only after the edit is tweaked and streamlined into something we are happy with.

Right now I am working again on Ilia's arrival.  Sometimes those scenes  you may think are going to be very easy to edit, take a huge amount of what I like to call "micro-tweaking" to perfect. These little tweaks can at times take hours (or even days) to smooth out so that the viewer is not consciously aware of the changes. There needs to be absolutely no sign of the changes. It should flow like this was the way it always was intended, and that can be so hard when you don't have the source footage, the unaltered audio, effects, and music tracks and such. If you ever saw my cut of Dune, it is full of these "micro-tweaks", and it made for a very popular edit as far as story telling goes. The down side to that project was that I only had pan/scan source, and also a very lousy encoder. But if you look how I mashed up the scenes, you can see my style of "micro-tweaking".

Is it allowed to link to small YouTube clips of fan edit work? If so, I can have some test scenes ready to show you today. I'm am a little short on funds and can't work a paid rapidshare account into this weeks budget.

The clips I have ready are

1) Arrival of Ilia & Bones

2) Arrival of Spock

3) Leaving Drydock

4) Spock's meeting with Kirk and McCoy (Includes Vulcan flashback)

5) Attack on Epsilon-9

6) Crew Briefing

Note: The above scenes are not listed in their correct playing order.

Also, I did not list the Travel Pod scene that you should have already seen a rough cut of.

Sorry, I have been out. I agree with the above post 100%. Not sure if that shot from Trek IV will fit anyway, but we should try it in the rough-edit with some minor adjustments. If it looks good when in place, then we can put more work into it latter on.  I'm spending most of today editing this ough-edit workprint for you guys. It's just so hard for me to let go of something when it's in this unfinished state. I keep wanting to refine it, but doing that will just delay me getting it over to you for review.

Just to let you know, I have not had a chance to do any editing in the last two days due to some personal issues I had to take care of. But I do have some demo work on the hard drive that I plan to get up on file share this weekend.

There are so many creative and interesting ideas being expressed about what this edit could be, and that is realy getting my adrenalin pumping. Who knows, we might even wind up with multiple versions if we can't get all the ideas to work in the same edit. That is the great thing about being fan editors, we get to break any rules we want with our projects.

Inspired by my favorite DC Comics TOS story about the end of the five year mission, I thought it would be really neat to have Decker board the ship at the very end of the montage. (In the comic, he was a Starfleet liaison officer, and already sporting the TMP uniform.)

I remember that issue. It has Uhura all happy about the new uniforms. Wasn't that the issue written by Walter Koenig? I have all the Marvel '79-'81 comic series, and also the complete first series of D.C. comics from the mid-late 1980's in a box someplace.  I always hated that they never had a Wrath of Khan tie-in comic to bridge the two comic series together.

Regarding integrating the TOS theme, I found something that could be very cool.  I have an audio book collection of "Enterprise: The First Adventure", "Final Frontier" and "Strangers from the Sky".  In addition to the three books, Shatner does a five minute or so introduction to the collection.  In that intro, he does a very reserved spoken version of the TOS speech with very subdued music under it.  It's a different and interesting take on the  opening...familiar, yet with that "tired" feel to it. I'll whip up an audio clip of it later tonight.

GREAT FIND!
