In a vein similar to Harmy's restorations I have restored the film posters to the best of my abilities. They may not be 100% accurate, but they are very pleasing to the eye. I did my own take of the Definitive laser disc box set, though it is still quite different. I'm almost done with the discs, so they will be uploaded sometime in the next few days or so.

All art and images are pre 1997 material to make things more legit. The only images on the back that are not from Harmy's preservation are promotional images and what not.

It is a shame that ESF only promised that good looking "LD" box and never delivered the result ...

I started working retail after I said that. I'm gonna take another wack at it. I should still have the files. My computer is coughing up dust, but I should still be able to get something.

Well, I didn't have the finished files, but luckily, I had to original project files. So I finished them up along with the box. I lost the directions to how to make the box, but it's pretty self explanatory.

Here is the link. It's a large size, but they are large files.

Ok, these are the new and improved covers, with disk art that doesn't have a template over it. I fixed grammar, and hopefully any issues with color, though my monitor isn't the best judge. The box is being postponed.

{NOTICE: This preview was made before errors were brought to my attention, but it is pretty much what you get}

As I stated before, if you have any problems with the link, give a shout.

{Anyone still have these in Full Res? They're awesome, but the link is dead!}

I need to see if I have these anywhere.

Video Games - a general discussion thread

I decided I would go back and give Skyrim another chance, so I retried it, but the game is so buggy, and so drawn out that I got burnt out on it. So I picked up some games I neglected during my Skyrim play.

Red Dead Redemption (2010)

This game was one of the most enjoyable games I have played in years. This game isn't completely without flaw. Though, these flaws actually give it character. The only thing I didn't like is the conclusion. Not gonna get into it, for sake of saving a good game.

It was a long game. I played the game as much as I could. Don't have the DLC's, but planning to.

I'd give the game a solid 8 out of 10.

Outlaws (1997)

Since I've been in an overall Western mood lately, Outlaws was a prime choice. The game considering it's age, holds up amazingly well. The enemies didn't present as much of a challenge as finding your way through each town. More of a laid back Doom feel than an adventure.

The game shows the quality you would expect from a LucasArts game

The game get's a 7.5 out of 10

Currently playing GUN (2005)

Watched the new Silent Hill. Firstly, I have to say, it isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be be, but really it didn't do anything the first didn't already do. Secondly, it seemed to be more of a Site B Lost World kind of thing, where it didn't make itself necessary, but in the end, I wasn't at all sad to go see more dinosaurs in Lost World.

It just didn't try to scare. It felt too stylized and more sexual than scary.

I just really feel Silent Hill should be played, not seen. What made the first Silent Hill work, was the fact that I had played the game, so I was already in that mindset. It's not that things are jumping out at you, it's that you have that feeling of dread and confusion. Games never affect the mind like Silent Hill did.

Computer is on it's last leg. So, I'm going to have to either replace it or fix it. Replacing it is a better option. Not scrapping the project, but halting it.

I think the move really affected my computer. Maybe getting banged around in the truck. But, all good things must end. My hard drive is still fine, so that's a relief.

I'm planning on doing a build, one piece at time.

The Zombie Apocalypse is nigh!

Zombie are so played out right now, I'm not even sure an actual zombie apocalypse would scare me.

Yeah, people are making the whole zombie thing annoying now. I used to like the undead genre, but now I just roll my eyes and think "Great, just what we needed, another zombie movie."

I worked at a sporting goods store, and I got a lot of customers who bought ammo, just for killing zombies.

It doesn't bother me too much, it just tarnishes my appreciation of zombie films.

A director's job isn't just to make a film look good. It's also about getting great performances out of the actors - something George Lucas absolutely cannot do. Abrams is much better at that.

Sidney Lumet said that ultimately, the DP and the lighting crew can get the shot right, the most important thing a director can do is work with actors.

I just hope he get's unknowns for the movie. I don't know if I want to see a bunch of it-people in this movie. It should be a movie that creates it-people. I liked Super-8, because I had never seen these kids before, and their performances were pretty damn good.

I just hope Abrams doesn't make the same mistake George Lucas made on the prequels. Star Wars isn't shiny or sparkly. It is gritty and worn.

I just haven't been impressed with his directing style thus far, but he understands story very well, so that's one thing over Lucas. I'm already prepared to not like these, I did the same with Star Trek, and was very surprised. The hype isn't near as high as it was in the mid 90's. Of course, back then, the worst Star Wars film was ROTJ, and it's not bad in it's own right.

And is it too much to ask for a Lens flare limit?

I like the color correction, EyeShotFirst. I say go for it. It's harder to specifically identify the cinematography as distinctively from the mid-1980s with your CC.

Really, aside from a few overly 80's elements (video game, spandex exercise scene, so on) this movie has a fairly timeless style to it.

There is still a lot to work on. While it's silly to try to make this movie exclusively 60's, it's not a bad idea to try and give it the same essence. I don't mind some of the things that are 80's elements. It's the cliche 80's stuff. A good thing there wasn't a montage.

I'm impressed with how well they did the film considering they weren't allowed to do much. Most people couldn't do much better with free rein.

Yeah, I still like Thunderball more, but the effort in NSNA deserves some credit. Plus it's the only non Dalton 80's Bond movie that doesn't bash people in the head with silliness.

I'm still getting the hang of the editing. It's proving hard, because my computer is pretty dated, but little by little.

If I finish this year, it will coincide with the film's 30th anniversary.

Sorry guys. I was in the process of moving, so I was without internet for a good month. I pondered the suggestions of color correction and I think I might have to do it to the film.

This is just a test of a screenshot. I hated how flourescent and cold they made M's office. So I decided to take it back to the warm incandescent office we got in the 60's. I also did a slight shift to the reds, and Connery looks so much better. The boost in contrast makes his toupee look less fake.

for some reason though, image shack always messes up the colors.

Bah! That's not true Stargate! That a piss-poor piece of afterbirth spawned from the belly of a parody series that turned to shit after its fifth season!

Tell us how you really feel.

Scrooged (1988)

So I realized today that it had been a while since I sat down to watch a movie. For whatever reason, I picked Scrooged. I'd only seen one scene of the film before and was not prepared at all for that opening. The film was filled with lots of surprises like that, Danny Elfman...Karen Allen... It felt very uneven, including an adaption of A Christmas Carol in the middle of it contributes a lot to that. Definitely not one of Bill Murray's best. It's...passable.

I dare anyone not to laugh at "The Night The Reindeer Died". That should have been a real tv movie. ;)

As far as unusual takes on A Christmas Carol go, it's one of the best. And there have been several of those over the decades.

My fondest memory of seeing this in a theater was the Batman trailer in front of it. There was no title screen, just the stylized Bat logo. As the trailer ended, these two ladies a row or two in front me exclaimed, "What's the name of the movie?" >_<

I friggin love this movie, and consider it a top 5 Bill Murray performance.

My favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol, though for a traditional performance, nothing touches George C Scott as Scrooge.

Thanks for the update. By going Grindhouse with it, are you trying to make it not look like a 1983 film?

Yeah, it's the 80's stuff that really ruins the film for me. It's not as overly 80's as the Dalton outings, but still. The film has a timeless look to it, in places. I don't really want to dirty it up too much. Just give it more of a technicolor hot look.

Is the credit sequence taking form yet? Watching the other Bonds has given me an idea or two...

Yes, I've got a bit of a still frame rough draft taking place. My main plan is something similar to OHMSS as kind of a greatest hits, but only the Connery ones. May include OHMSS, because I feel it's in the top 5.

I really need silhouettes for it. I'll see if I can get something. You cannot have Bond without silhouettes.

So basically this edit is going to be an AVCHD. Sorry, I can't do blu ray. Most likely I'll be doing this in 720p. If I had a more capable computer, I'd go 1080.

I'm debating on gritting it up and aging the look and sound of the film. Not a full blown grindhouse, but a little tarnish.

I'm in the middle of a big move, so I haven't gotten much time, but I have done some work to it.

When/Why did you become an OT purist?
Time

It was like 2002 or so when I found out there were changes. We had the 90's trilogy Box Set on VHS, and I being to young to really remember was oblivious to the SE. Watching Empire at my uncle's house and seeing the Cloud City CGI was my first dose. but that didn't bother me. It was buying the 2004 DVD set that really got to me. I got to see what they did to Star Wars.

So really, I never got the SE on VHS, my parents didn't buy movies more than once. Good thing I got to be ignorant to the SE up to my teenage years.

What about the moving groundbreaking Bill Conti FYEO score? ;)

Agreed, Barry is probably the underdog of the great film score composers. Even when the film was crap, he could make something out of it completely unexpected and fascinating.

Of the non-Barry scores, the best IMO is George Martin's LALD.

I really did like George Martin's work. To be honest, the only ones I don't like are the later scores like Eric Serra. People will shoot me for saying David Arnold, but I just don't like it. It hints at Bond, but ultimately feels like Bourne.

John Barry was such an amazing composer. Don't know if I'd like the movies as much without John Barry.

His work on the 60's bond movies is nothing short of genius. You Only Live Twice and On Her Majesty's Secret service has some of what I would call the most beautiful music written for film.

Then the wild sexy brass of Goldfinger and Thunderball rivals most big band tracks.

Top it off with the power of From Russia With Love, you have just an all around amazing composer.
