I really don't care for any of the Terminator films anymore. They were great when I was a little kid, but I just can't enjoy them as an adult. I just look at the first 2 Terminator films, and it's like I see a huge door that James Cameron opened for all these shitty action movie directors like Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich. James Cameron wasn't the first action movie director, but he is like the pinnacle of action movie directors, not saying that in a good way.

Didn't they transfer the Fantasound masters over to more normal recording gear around that time?

That album was released on reel to reel, so it might be a better option than vinyl for a preservation.

Yeah, I knew about the reel to reel, I just never could find it at the right time. I'd love to get a reel to reel player. It would definitely be a much better option.

What I hear in the vinyl rip of it, horrible bitrate and static included, still sounds much more natural. I found myself, after giving a proper RIAA curve, enjoying the recording as a listener for once. You can literally hear the tugging of the bow over the strings and the vibrations in the horns. The celeste in the nutcracker actually has a metallic strike to it. All of those little nuances are gone in the LD - Blu Ray releases. The guy who recorded the vinyl, obviously didn't have very good gear. If somebody with a reel to reel player could do it, or I could get a hold of one of those sealed vinyl releases using my good turntable, I could see a darn good restoration of the sound.

Disney is always worried about the restoration from a film standpoint, when they really need to do it from a musical standpoint.

I've actually done a little digging, and it appears that the 1957 release of the soundtrack....

...Doesn't suffer from the same problems as later releases. I've listened to rips of this old stereo release, and I have to say, if somebody managed to get a hold of a clean copy, the sound is very full. It doesn't have the overly scrubbed sound the home video releases have. In fact you can hear more of the instruments. The instruments all sound pretty good.

Some guy on youtube was working on a restoration of the film to bring back the true fantasound. He claimed he used this soundtrack and a mono mix (where he got that, I haven't a clue). He disappeared off the face of the earth, and his video on the process has been removed. I have it archived on my drive.

I'm sure there was some slight audio trickery involved in the soundtrack, because I hear subtle reverb, but then again, I've only heard the soundtrack scrubbed to death of any high frequencies. It was common practice in the 50's to electronically reprocess sounds and they'd also add reverb to fake stereo. It doesn't sound that extreme.

I was working on the 1982 cut myself, I just had too many problems. It was a struggle to line up the 1990 LD audio with the Blu Ray, along with the 1982 cut. The 1982 tracks are easy to add, I just really wanted the original Deems Taylor. My computer can't really handle the load. I can edit, but my PC won't allow me to do anything precise. If you need the 1990 LD audio in case you have any errors, I still have them in.

I'm dying to hear the old mono mix of the audio, but Disney felt that Fantasound was the only audio that needed to be preserved.

I don't know where to start in how much I love that video. Probably my favorite addition, was the large amount of ships leaving Cloud City. That's something I didn't think of, and wasn't expecting. I also want to bonk myself on the head for not thinking of it.

I also absolutely love the new sabers. They have the flicker and flat out hot look of the originals, while having consistent cores.

Sorry to go off like a fan boy.

Any good underrated 50's to 70's films, preferably films depicting the period in which they were filmed, or depicting a period within that time frame?

I like that period of film making, and like watching films set in those times. I'd just like to know about the films that aren't popular, I'm also counting films that have gone on to become cult classics as too popular.

Melvin and Howard (1980)

Paul Le Mat, Jason Robards, and one helluva script make Melvin and Howard a very underrated film. Jonathan Demme is such a brilliant director, and this film really shines with his touch.

It might not be everybody's cup of tea, but I'm a huge fan of Paul Le Mat. He deserves more recognition, and he deserves to be casted more. He's truly a gifted actor in the sense that you don't feel like your watching an act. Unless we're talking about Easy Wheels, but I almost think that movie was supposed to be bad.

This film is the true account of a man named Melvin Dummar (Le Mat) who helped an old man (Robards) claiming to be Howard Hughes in the desert. While I'm not going to give a lot about it away. This film is more about Melvin, than Howard Hughes. In fact Howard Hughes is barely even a part of the film.

This is Melvin's struggle to get out of the hard work, low pay life he's stuck in, and the strain on his relationship with his family.

I won't bother rating it, but I will say, it's a fun movie to watch.

Been playing Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven. FANTASTIC game! I really don't understand why this franchise isn't as lauded as GTA.

It is a great game. Shame the sequel wasn't as good. I liked Mafia II, it just felt a little boring at times. What good is a sandbox game, if you aren't allowed to do what you want? Zelda is less linear than Mafia II.

I was amused to find out that our newest/third Wii U game, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, doesn't only allow you to not use the gamepad at all, but turns off the second screen completely (Super Mario 3D World mirrors the screen at all times and Zelda: Wind Waker HD uses it for inventory).

I'm not sure if I should be disappointed that Nintendo isn't utilizing their own gimmick, or thankful that they're not slaving themselves to it.

I am really liking the Assassin's Creed 4 second screen on my iPad. That's something we need more of.

I hated the wii for forcing you to use the damn wii mote. I think people's complaints have made Nintendo take note. I feel that even though Nintendo hasn't been the greatest as far as innovation lately, I still think they want to make their fans happy, even if they might not always have the best idea of how to do it.

I was spoiled by the N64.

Zelda games are usually so innovative, Skyward Sword wasn't. I enjoyed playing it, but at the end of the day, we should've had an HD Zelda game with a great control system, but then again, I don't think Nintendo knows what the hell to do. They are making so much money on these damn DS games, that the consoles get pushed to the side.

I love Nintendo, and would love to see them return to being the badass company they were in the 80's and 90's. Things just went to shit when they made the wii, and time will tell if the wii U will do anything. Nintendo used to push great titles when they came out with consoles, not so much now. I'd hate to see them fall and turn into another Sega or Atari.

The only way you could pull off a live action Zelda, is to get a teenager who could actually act to play link. Once you start getting forehead wrinkles and five o clock shadow, you are too far gone to make a convincing Link.

Give me a traditional animated film any day. CGI could really work as well, I just don't know if you could give Link things to say after all these years
