Looks like someone's bed to me.

Have we really not found anyone who can provide scans and pics of this? I have the thing in storage, and can maybe get to it next week. But I'd like to know if anything else is in the works first.

And did anyone ever capture the video?

'Backstroke of the West' with retail DVD quality : FINISHED & RELEASED

First off marioxb, let me say THANK YOU for making this. I'm finally able to enjoy Star Wars in Engrish!

I shamelessly stole Ell the Ewok's original Backstroke cover and changed up the back. I added an Engrish synopsis, and provided info so that this is now specific to marioxb's conversion kit.

Info Wanted: The Legality of Fan Projects

As far as studios producing "clean" versions of movies, I've often heard about the movies shown on ariline flights. These movies are apparently edited by the studios, so they could definitely release these if they really wanted to. I really don't know why they don't; there seems to be a market for this kind of thing.

Also, TV networks play films that have been "edited for content" all the time. I'm curious though: Do the networks make these TV edits, or do the studios?

Well if you guys of Starkiller Ranch don't mind i'm willing to help you out, I still have a good amount of webspace left over

In a PM, I basically told InfoDroid that I was willing to host all kind of stuff for the project, although I don't think I ever used the word homepage. I don't know if Commander Courage knows that (but now he does). I've made a similar offer to TrooperMan. When I did the logo for the Starkiller Ranch, I also spruced up the starkiller pages at my site (www.erikstormtrooper.com/starkiller.html) a tad.

If anyone else wants to take what I've done and expand it, go for it! My free time comes and goes (mostly the latter) so maybe someone else who can commit more time would like to have a go.

Funny stuff, and some interesting details.

That being said, I can't believe he missed the gaffe in ROTJ, where Luke's lightsaber is behind Vader's: http://www.dmeb.net/speb/foryoureyes/Emperor31.jpg

Huh, but Luke strikes from right to left (more or less) so it should be behind Vader's.

But Vader blocked Luke's saber is its logical that Vader' saber should be behind Luke' saber.

Jocasta Nu from starwars.com had this to say:

"Although it may appear that Luke's lightsaber blade is behind Vader's, that is actually not the case. Remember that the Sith prefer to use synthetic crystals in the construction of their lightsabers. These synthetic crystals produce lightsaber blades that are red in color and are far more powerful than the blades produced by the natural crystals preferred by the jedi. What you are seeing here is Vader's red saber disrupting the power matrix of Luke's saber, effectively "breaking" Luke's green blade. This momentarily causes the illusion that Vader's lightsaber is in front of Luke's."

(Okay. I made that up. )

CC,

I like options 1 and 2. With those, we're keeping the same stuff together, if you get my meaning. 3 and 4 have too much jumping around. Option 1 is actually my favorite, as I think it's important to have the droids walk us up to jabba's palace so we know where we are.

As far as the new opening of ESB, I wouldn't assume anything yet. We haven't heard InfoDroid's opinion on the matter. And what exactly is the problem with the flow if the Emperor arrives in the beginning?

Did you ever get any ideas on how to explain Luke's absence during the rebel briefing?

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

Trooperman,

The cockpit scene looks very promising. I assume it will cropped.

In your previous video samples, you posted the Geonosis battle with Lawrence of Arabia footage. Sorry to say, I have one small nitpick: there's once scene where I can swear I see a horse's butt through some smoke.

Just curious: how are you handling the opening of the movie? ADigitalMan's opening scene with the pan down on Coruscant is perfect IMHO.

Thanks,
Erik

Mask, I think the strongest urge is to fix TPM and ROTJ, because they are they weakest of all six films. Personally, I think they should not be done in any order but all at the same time (I'm sure that's easy for someone who's not actually working on the project to say). Regardless of the order, I think it's important to try to flesh out the details in all the movies as soon as possible.

And Mangrove,

Those shots look pretty good. I'm not sure how hard it would be to do all that rotoscoping when you've got one thing flying in front of another though. Is tjdavis the rotoscoping guy?

Personally, I think the opening shot of every episode should include a ship flying overhead, preferably with a planet below. In my mind, I think it's just as important as the opening crawl. This is one of the great missed opportunities of the saga. There are ways to accomplish this without each one seeming like a re-hash too. For example, ADigitalMan's opening of Episode II is brilliant: we pan down on Coruscant and then the queen's ships spin in.

Episode I should have opened with a pan down on Naboo with tradefed ships in orbit, then the starcruiser flies overhead.

A great alternate opening for the original ESB would have been a pan down to the fleet of Star Destroyers, with the Super Star Destroyer flying in overhead. I think if we had that shot with a Death Star in there, that would be perfect for our edit of ESB.

Not sure if this would be useful, but on the ROTJ DVD, the menu features a shot of Luke's X-Wing and the Falcon flying down over Tatooine then going in different directions. It's a nice panning shot. Have y'all checked the ESB DVD for any useable footage from the menus?

And speaking of recycling things, if y'all find yourself in need of any small audio clips of Luke, the Rogue Squadron game featured some guy doing a very good impersonaltion of Mark Hamill. This is stuff like him talking over the comm in his X-Wing.

InfoDroid,

Awesome! This is so cool that y'all are creating new shots to bridge scenes. You guys should let TJ out of his box more often

SomethingStarWarsRelated,

I agree that something should be done to make the Death Star look different if it's used for ESB - maybe something as simple as using photoshop to cut away a little more. But as to why the Death Star might not be completed by the time of ROTJ, well, the first DS was started in ROTS, and wasn't completed until 18 years later in ANH. I figure the second Death Star should take a long time to build as well - at least 5 years.

"ANH seems to be the only movie that doesn't have any kind of hologram!" You may be forgetting one little scene in Ben's hut. Aside from the coolness factor of Tarkin talking to a hologram, would this have any payoff plot-wise?

Tellan,

Sorry to hear you've had such bad luck. Your attention to these details makes me think this will be a fantastic set.

I've got a question that I don't think I've seen addressed:

Are you using the official DVD version of the Death Star explosion? There is a blue pixelated haze surrounding the explosion (which has always bothered me). The G'Kar special edition should have a non-blue explosion.

Thanks,
Erik

Thanks, guys!

I'm good for an occasional idea, but I don't have any editing skills myself (or time, for that matter).

To be honest, I was thinking of a less dramatic edit to ANH that might still work in the scheme of the Starkiller Ranch edit. Like this:

The attack on the Death Star can still happen, and Luke still makes the shot, but the explosion only disables the Death Star, and part of it survives. (This would of course require new effects on the Death Star explosion scene.) Maybe we can redub General Dodonna so that before the attack he says "A direct hit should cause a chain reaction that disables the station"). Then we still get the end celebration, since the Rebels have saved the day for now.

Now here's a new part I just thought of. Move the ROTJ opening scene over Endor to the beginning of ESB. (I've always felt that the opening for ESB was a little weak.) The Empire has already started repairing the station. This keeps the Death Star in the story, so it doesn't feel so rehashed in ROTJ. To spice things up, see if it's possible to replace Endor with Mustafar in this opening shot.

Vader lands and tells the new Grand Moff that he's there to get the project back on schedule. Cut the mention of the Emperor. Cut to Star Destroyer launching probes. Then use the ESB Special Edition shot of Vader's shuttle approaching the Super Star Destroyer to get to the fleet, so he has time to check out the fleet and then get the report about the rebels on Hoth. Continue with rest of movie as planned.

For ROTJ, start out with a new opening shot, or maybe heavily modify the original opening shot and have the Emperor show up at the beginning. Commander Courage's idea about moving the Dagobah scenes to the beginning work well, so maybe a new opening shot panning down on Dagobah would work.

Regardless, I really hope somebody can use some of these ideas.

Guys,

Here's a really crazy idea. I'm sure it'll be shot down, but here goes anyway:

Don't destroy the Death Star at the end of A New Hope.

I know there are a million reasons this won't work. (What is the Death Star doing during ESB? Why is it being rebuilt in Jedi? What's there to celebrate at the end of ANH?) But what if someone here could find a way to pull it off?

We all know George Lucas only squeezed the destruction of the Death Star into Episode IV because he didn't know if the other movies would be made. By removing this from Episode IV, it might help to strengthen some of the weaknesses of Episode VI. ROJ just feels so rehashed as it is.

So?
