I have uploaded the full-res disc label for the NTSC version to my site:

I'm not saying we should re-use the Duros dialog from the cantina. I'm saying we should manipulate some other audio to make it sound similar to the Duros dialog. For example, we could take the Niemodian dialog from a forign track of Episode I (like Japanese), slow it down slightly, take out all the high frequencies, increase the bass, and maybe add a slight reverb or something. I'm no audio specialist, but something like that might sound close enough to the Duros in the cantina.

I agree with everything Darth Richard said, except for reversing the language tracks. You can always tell when audio has been reversed, and I think it will be distracting. Can we take a japanese track for the Niemodians and modulate it (or whatever) to sound like the Duros in the cantina? I think that would provide a nice bit of (small) continuity.

The only weak spot here is the opening of ROTJ. Panning down on a planet just seems very boring. Although the Obi-Wan line on Dagobah leads nicely to the Emperor's arrival, I'd like to see the emperor's arrival be the opening scene. It's just a bigger opening, and I think it really sets the movie in motion. Maybe reverse the Star Destroyer shot so it's not exactly the same as in ESB.

Shanep, I think you and I are saying the same thing. My comment was directed toward Guy Caballero.

phraseturner,

Nice ideas, but short of re-shooting, I don't know how these suggestions could be accomplished. I guess we'll have to write it off as another lost opportunity of the PT.

I think the hand twitch thing is doable and has poential, but it kind of leaves the audience hanging, wondering what happened to Padme.

Darth Richard,

That's a good idea to ask OCPMovie for VFX help. Does he come around here anymore?

I also think we should start to write all of these changes down to all the movies, to know what we're doing.

PaulisDead2221,

The DS can be partially blown up, if just one half of it blows up. It's a big explosion, but it only destroys half the superstructure. The Empire later comes along to salvage what's left and rebuild it. That's what we could see happening at the beginning of ESB. Kind of like fixing a car that's been totalled.

I think you're suggesting that we end ANH after the rebels escape from the DS. The problem with that is: why didn't the Empire just send the DS to blow up Hoth. In order for ESB to happen the way it does, the DS needs to be "taken out" in some way.

Guy Caballero,

Taking the DS/DS II out of ROTJ is interesting, but we run into the same problem of having to put Coruscant into all those windows. Also, what will the rebel fighters do once Han does get the shield down? What are they attacking? Are they trying to take out a portion of the capitol city (with all its innocent inhabitants) to kill Palpatine? That seems a little too heartless to me.

Commander Courage,

Did InfoDroid ever get anyone to record Niemodian voices for TPM? I was wondering why we wouldn't want someone to record some jibberish that sounds like the Duros from the cantina.

I just haven't had time to read all of the comments in the last few days, but I wanted to say this:

Commander Courage,

The idea of the Emperor/Vader discussion at the end of ANH seems weird. I guess it breaks up the "Golly! We won" feeling at the end of ANH. Not to beat a dead horse here, but if you go with my idea of having the DS partially blown up in ANH, then we're already taking away some of the feel-good ending, so using the emperor in ANH might not be so bad.

BTW, I love this thread

Luke would still be watching the space battle from the throne room, only he would be watching it from Coruscant. Palps would still be in command of the DS. The DS would be in Coruscant's orbit, blowing rebel ships away.

Picture that "Luke obsererves the space battle" scene with little shapes and small flashes. Now imagine that with a distant DS2 in the same shot.

You really wouldn't have to edit much at all, just add the DS in a few shots and Coruscant in a few.

I think this might be a bit of a stetch. In ANH, Luke had to use his macrobinoculars to see a battle in orbit over tatooine. Now in ROTJ he's supposed to look out a window and see ships in orbit around a moon of coruscant?

Think of how small our moon looks in the sky. Now imagine a little Death Star next to it. Now imagine a bunch of little ships around the Death Star. At night, the only things you would be able to see are the moon and the Death Star.

I think it would be easier to have the emperor's throne room be on the DSII, as it is in ROTJ. Remember, he is part of the bait for the rebellion. The attack is in part an assasination attempt.

You know, we might be able to get Coruscant into ROTJ if we leave the emperor's throne room on the DSII, and make Endor the sanctuary moon of Coruscant. Think about it, this would be the second time that Sidious, in orbit above Coruscant, in the middle of a battle, played an perspective apprentice against his number 1 sith.

The rebel briefing will need some tweaking though:
I think we should convey that the DSII has moved to Endor, the moon of Coruscant, for the final phase of its construction. This makes it more believable that the rebels just found out about it.

Cut the mention of the bothans.

We also need to convey that the rebels realize this is a risk, but the imperial fleet is beleived to be engaged elsewhere.

We will need to maybe redub Admiral Ackbar to give a little extra exposition that the rebels are going to Endor, the forest moon of Coruscant.

Ultimately, I think this is Commander Courage's call, since he knows what resources are available to us.

Ok what I have always wanted to see was all three original films cut into one film, now I here you saying 'heard it, done it' however has it been said in this way.

We all know Star Wars wasn't intended as a series of films and Lucas had one 3hr (or so) film in his head and scripted, it was too long so it was split in three, sort of, I say sort of because Lucas didn't think it would be a hit so the ending (Death Star battle) was brought forward and then of course it did very well. So we get to Jedi and Lucas is left without an ending so what does he do? Re-uses the original. The only Star Wars film that works in my opinion is Empire because that was shot the way it was intended, as the middle part of a story.

What I’d like to see is something close to that original arc. Whether it means you would have to move the original Death Star battle to then end or drop it completely in favour of the Death Star II battle I don’t know. I’d also like to see the Wookies from Sith put in because in the original 3hr script it was them who helped in the last battle not the dammed Ewoks, cos Lucas couldn’t afford to use Wookies, so he shrunk them instead.

I got the reply:
Interesting idea! Actually I remember that the Death Star battle seems quite added-on after the rescue and escape (except maybe the planting of a tracking device...), so it could just be cut off and lead into Empire somehow. That seems nice really, so you don't get this artificial climax in the first act.

As I'm sure you can understand I don't have the time to sit and read all 43pages of this thread but how close am I to what has been disscussed? My vision was for the original trilogy beacuse as far as I'm concerned the new one is just Lucas' attemp at remaking the original films (and failing totaly)

Troy, I posted a similar idea in this thread several months ago. It was my idea to have the final Death Star battle in Episode IV, but instead of the Death Star being destroyed, it would just be severely damaged and disabled. The rebels would celebrate that they had disabled the Death Star. Then at the beginning of ESB, we see an altered shot from the opening of Episode VI, where the DSII is being repaired. This way there is only one Death Star, and the whole plot doesn't seem so rehashed. I don't think my idea for the end of Episode IV caught on though.

After my idea, there was also some talk about a re-edit of the original trilogy to be one really long movie with the battle of Yavin completely removed.

Your idea about using the wookiees from ROTS to be the ground attack in Episode VI is new though. That would be interesting as a stand alone project, but I don't think it would work as part of the whole saga.

You could have the DS2 being built, but instead right above Coruscant and have Vader at the opening travel on his shuttle to Coruscant instead of DS2.

You could take elements of nighttime Coruscant views from the PT, of which there are several, and comp them into scenes outside The Emperor's throne room windows.

This is an idea I've been rolling around in my head for a while, but I don't know if it would work. What might work is if the DSII could be in orbit of Endor, which we could make a moon of Coruscant.

But there are a number of Pros and Cons:

PROS:

It elevates the scale of the final battle and makes it seem more "final".

When the DSII explodes and the emperor bites it, it makes more sense that the people on Coruscant would immediately celebrate.

Endor is referred to by the Emperor as "the sanctuary moon". This is a vestigial reference to the fact that Endor was originally conceived as an environmental sanctuary or "park" moon of Had Abbadon (Coruscant).

CONS:

The space battle seems a little too small to occur over Coruscant.

Why would the Bothans have needed to find the secret location of the DSII, when it's right over Coruscant?

Heading to the capitol to take out the DSII seems like obvious bait for the rebels.

While the duel with Luke and Vader could conceiveably take place on Coruscant, there's a problem when Luke drags Vader along and unmasks him. If they are on Coruscant, why does it look like they are in the DSII hangar, with panicked imperials running around?

I'd love to see this idea work somehow, but I think the unmasking scene with Vader is the deal breaker.

Are you gonna buy 'em?
Time
No.

I was going to buy them originally, but not now that I've heard they'll be letterbox. Ironically, I would have bought this set 4 years ago in a heartbeat.

I suspect the OOT will be released in higher quality at some point in the future. I think the demand is just too great, and it would be foolish to not release it later.

I know Lucas can say that, if these sell poorly, there's no demand for the OOT. But I'd like to think there are others at LucasFilm who know better.

Star Wars DVD Covers
Time
I really admire what they tried to do with these covers conceptually. But the choice of certain publicity photos is very poor. You would think someone with access to LucasFilm archives could get some better pub photos.

The good news is that I think it would be possible to scan these covers when they come out and fix them.

    1. The post-accident Mark Hamill should not be used on the ANH cover. I know there are not many pre-accident publicity photos, but still, this really irks me, as it did on the '04 DVD cover. Something must be done about this. For the good of mankind, we need to put a Photoshop think-tank together.

    2. Replace Vader on the ANH cover with this one:
    http://www.thelightsaber.com/Conceptual/CON05.jpg

    3. On ESB, use the right pub photo for Han:
    http://www.blueharvest.net/images/pr/chewie-han.jpg

    4. At the very least, on the ESB cover use an Episode III pub photo of Vader that doesn't show-off the skinny neck:
    http://www.messengermods.com/data/media/87/starwars3-darth_vader.jpg

    5. On the ROTJ cover, add some X-Wings in, like on the original poster, to fill in the empty spaces.

    6. Also on the ROTJ cover, use any publicity photo of Vader where he doesn't look like a CARTOON!

Help: Ideas Wanted for... "Episode 3" or "What Convinced Me To Try a Re-edit"
Time
Copied from the Starkiller ranch thread, my thoughts on having Vader die in ROTS:

Have Anakin actually die in front of Obi-Wan in ROTS after he burns. This solves a few issues for me:

1) Ben's dishonesty in ANH is a little more believeable. If Anakin literally dies, it's more believable for Ben to say that Vader "murdered him".

2) In ROTJ, Vader says to Luke, "You don't understand the power of the dark side. I MUST obey." Why is this? Why does he have to obey? My impression of Vader is that it was always his hate (and tie to the dark side) that kept him alive inside the suit. So if he really did die in the lava, and Palpatine actually does use his Sith powers to bring him back from death, then vader has to obey in order to continue living. The second he ceases to serve the dark side, he begins to die.

3) Many people may not be fans of the Hayden ghost at the end of the ROTJ DVD, but it makes a lot more sense if Anakin really dies in ROTS. The Hayden ghost is what got me thinking about all this in the first place. When I saw the ROTJ DVD, I really expected that Lucas would have Anakin die in ROTS.

As far as how to accomplish this, I've just started to think about it. The scene where Anakin burns in front of Obi-Wan would have to be tweaked so that it appears that Anakin is motionless before Obi-Wan walks away. Then Palpatine would come and say something to the effect of, "I will help you, my friend" (I don't know if the source for these lines exists).

We would cut most of the scene of Vader being constructed since Anakin is obviously alive. Only keep the tail end of the scene where the helmet lowers on Anakin's scarred face. Perhaps it's possible to get a static image of Anakin's scarred face as the mask lowers, so that he appears dead up until that point of the first breath in the mask. I don't think the scene with Vader rising on the operating platform has to be changed.

What I'm getting at is, Sidious uses his Sith magic/technology to bring back Vader from death and put him in a mechanical suit. We always hear about the power of the dark side, but we have yet to really see what that is (I think). I believe this process where we see a dead person come back alive in a mechanical suit IS the power of the dark side. It's their attempt at immortality.

darkhelmet,

Your re-edited fight with Mace and Sidious is excellent. By cutting out all the crap (Sidious' ridiculous faces, Sidious hopping around like a frog on crack), you actually made it seem better than it is. Bravo. Now you just need to recolor Mace's saber

Did you move the part with Anakin ahead a little? It looks like you did, and it stretched out the beginning of the fight so that it seems like the other Jedi weren't so easyily taken out by Sidious.

One suggestion: is there any way that you can edit the sceene to give Anakin even less dialog before he cuts off Mace's arm? In my own imaginary fan edit, I'd like to see Anakin come right up to Mace and cut off his arm, like he came into the room knowing that's what he would have to do. Maybe Mace can say "It's time for the rule of the Sith to end" or whatever he says, then Anakin just screams no and cuts off his arm. It makes his actions seem more deliberate. If you think about it, he had all that time in the Jedi Council room to think about what he needed to do, so he should be determined by the time he gets to Palpatine's office.

Did you happen to read my thoughts on having Anakin/Vader die in ROTS back at the top of this page in the Starkiller Ranch thread (http://www.originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=9&threadid=3886&STARTPAGE=11)?

darkhelmet,

I downloaded your clip. You've done some very interesting stuff with the beginning of the movie. I really liked how you managed to cut together footage of the space battle so we really focus on how that one star destroyer bears down on General Grievous' ship.

However, not seeing any of the rescue of the chancellor, especially the fight with Dooku, feels very strange. I understand there are many awkward moments there that have thankfully been cut, but I'd like to think some of it is salvagable.

ORIGINAL STAR WARS TRILOGY OUT 09/2006 BY LUCASFILM
Time
This is great news! Our ultimate goal was to get the OT, and now we will! If only I had a time machine to jump ahead to Sep 12th.

I see this as a new opportunity for us. Regardless of what we get, it will probably be the best basis for new edits/recreations of Star Wars. Please don't think I'm slighting in any way the many, many wonderful efforts from you guys. Your efforts will never be obsolete. Each creation has been unique, and will never be exactly duplicated. YOU'VE MADE GREAT THINGS, AND NO ONE CAN TAKE THAT AWAY.

In reality, anything based on DVD (not to mention Laserdisc) will soon be "obsolete" once HD becomes standard. Once that happens, I certainly hope you wouldn't feel like you've wasted your time with all this DVD stuff.

I bet this release will have some changes. I don't see how coloration won't be an issue, due to the age of any original film or remastered copy they may use. So there's that issue that can be tweaked. And I know we'd all love different audio options, but I doubt we'll get them. (I get the impression this will be a "bare bones" release.) For all we know, this may have a new audio mix as well.

In the end, I'm sure someone will find something that doesn't fit with their vision of Star Wars, something they'd like to fix. And that's a good thing.

(I can't wait to see what happens to the "deliberate creative decision".)
