***The "Darth Editous" Episode IV DVD Info and Feedback Thread*** - a partially "de-specialed" DVD
Time
DE,

I currently have the "NTSC ALL" logo on there. If I just remove "NTSC" and leave the globe with "ALL", is that OK?

There is no CC "Close Captioned" logo. If you look closely, that's actually a DE "Darth Edited" logo. I don't know if anyone ever caught that.

Are there any other logos or text that bother you? Except for the NTSC and CC logos, that's actually the bottom of the 2004 DVD cover (I guess I got lazy with that part). So you won't offend me if you want something else modified or removed.

Are there any screenshots on the back that need to be updated for version 3 (are you still using the green R5)?

I have no problem if you want to put links to the covers in the torrents. Actually, I would be honored. But I'd prefer if I could get a chance to make a few of your requested tweaks before you do it, assuming that's convenient for you.

And yes. That is your original disc label artwork peeking through on the back cover.

Here is what you seek:

Problem: Many people liked the red-blue-green scheme, but I personally prefer the blue-red-green scheme.

Solution: Now there are two sets!

Set 1:

Set 2:

Thank God there was no debate about the color of ROTJ.

So here are the two versions of ANH. First Blue:

I can definitely see this happening. GL loves to rewrite history. (Luke and Leia being related; Luke being Vader's son; 6, 9, or 12 epiosdes, etc.)

To be fair, it is highly, HIGHLY unliky that this strange cut of TESB exists. However, it is POSSIBLE. It is also possible that there is a personal invitation to Skywalker Ranch waiting for me in my mailbox.

If this cut did exist, I'm sure GL rounded up every copy he could, and maybe even destroyed them. For this reason, I think pursuing an official response would be a waste of time.

Rancher, since you feel strongly about this, and since you live in Edmonton, maybe you should do some more research into this yourself. Have you tried contacting the theatre (if they're still open)? Have you tried to ask others in the community if they remember? Are there people in other Canadian cities who remember this?

Don't let a negative response bring you down. I'm sure we would gladly eat crow in trade for some lost secret cut of TESB.

MoveAlong,

Aside from the subtitles issue, can you give us your opinion of version 2?

Are there compression artifacts? Is the restored footage more seamless than in version 1?

audio sync problem when authoring DVDs
Time
The camcorder just acts as a passthrough. I was under the impression that importing via USB would not capture at full video quality. Is there a USB capture device I can use?

Erik, is the captured avi in sync?

Actually, I'm not sure I ever checked the raw AVIs, and I've since deleted them. I'm pretty sure that I checked the preview in Pinnacle before encoding, and it synced ok iirc.

I suspect the culprit is either my laptop or my DVR. In the past I've sucessfully used the camcorder as a passthrough, going from a different DVR to a different computer.

I was hoping someone would easily solve my problem by saying, "Oh, the Pinnacle encoder is absolute crap. Use ____."

Is that the new "final" Vader voice that you used in your "ANH Test" clip posted back in the beginnig of November? (That was the one with the awesome Death Star intro and the Imperial Conference.) If so, I really liked Vader's voice in that! It was nice and bassy.

audio sync problem when authoring DVDs
Time
I am a noob at video authoring, and I'm having trouble getting the audio to sync in shows I've captured from my DVR. After encoding and authoring, the audio starts in sync on the DVD, but is badly out of sync (1/2 a sec) by the end of the disc.

I frequently hear people mention audio sync problems, so I just don't know if this is the nature of the beast, or if my computer is too slow, or if I'm using the wrong software or what.

Here are my details.

Equipment:
Time Warner DVR
Sony camcorder (about 3 1/2 years old)
Dell Inspiron Laptop: 1.6 GHZ Solo Core, 1 GB RAM, Pinnacle Studio 8 for capturing and encoding

Process:
The video goes from the DVR to the camcorder via the RCA jack, and audio via the red/white audio jacks. The audio/video stream then goes from the camcorder to my laptop via firewire. In Pinnacle, I capture the audio/video. I save about three 25-minute shows un-encoded. Then in Pinnacle I create a simple menu and add all three shows (with a chapter stop for each). I trim a few frames here and there to make things pretty, but I never separate the audio from the video in Pinnacle. I have to go with about 80% quality to get all three episodes to fit. Then I let the laptop encode overnight, and I burn the disc the next morning.

I've seen in some cases where a retail DVD will go out of sync on a DVD player. In my experience that can always be fixed with stopping the DVD and resuming from the same spot. However, that doesn't work with these audio sync problems.

Any ideas what's happening here?

Thanks!

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)
Time
Trooperman,

Impressive work in that clip there. I just have a little constructive criticism.

The cameo by Ford is a GREAT idea, but I agree with C3PX. I suggest you cut it down to just one shot, preferably from a distance.

The thing that really caught me off guard was the music. Is it supposed to be ambient nightclub music, or is it "mood" music? (I don't know how else to describe it. In ANH, I would say almost all the music is mood music, like the sunset or the final battle, but the Cantina is ambient.)

The music is rather fitting, and it's a catchy tune. Especially when we see Zam walking from behind, her pace seems to match the tempo. However, I thought the music was a little too "earthy". It sounds like it came from a French movie from the 60s or 70s.

If the music is supposed to be ambient, I suggest you alter it a bit (the way Ben Burt clipped some of the frequencies for the ANH Cantina music). Plus, have it start (or be in progress) at the Jedi's entrance to the club, not a few seconds later.

If this is mood music, then that's certainly your creative decision. I haven't seen the rest of the movie to put this scene in context. But it's not something I'd expect to be in a Star Wars movie.

But hey, that's just me

I have no problem with a running time of 108. Trooperman, trust your feelings.

MTHaslett, as always, I love hearing your ideas. That sounds like a good re-edit of the wedding scene.

I was never really bothered by the scene, but you are right that the camera movement makes it stand out as CGI.

I have a totally tech-ignorant suggestion. Use the HD version (which should be available soon) of this scene and do a handmade "pan and scan". Figure out what portion of the scene you want to focus on, then (the hard part) zoom in on just that part and stabilize it as the camera moves.

Speaking of the HD versions: Trooperman, have you considered using them to help you crop and zoom in on certain scenes?

my memory isn't that bad, is it? (in SW '77 - Luke misses with the grappling hook?)
Time
I decided to E-mail Alan Dean Foster, ghost author of the novelization, to ask him about this.

Here's my e-mail to him:

Mr. Foster,

I am a Star Wars fan, and I was hoping I could ask you about your ghost-written novelization of Star Wars.

In the novelization, when Luke and Leia are trapped in the Death Star chasm, Luke throws the rope twice, missing on the first throw. However, in the movie, Luke only throws his grappling hook once.

Was this "missed throw" based on something provided by Lucasfilm (early script, production photos, etc.), or did you add it yourself to increase tension? I realize this was a long time ago, but I hope you have some vague memories about this.

I ask because it has become something of a Star Wars urban legend. Many people have claimed that they saw Luke's missed throw in theaters or on TV, while many others have claimed these were false memories that were inspired by the novelization.

Thanks for your time

Mr. Foster's reply:

Hi Erik;
As near as I can recall, it was something I added, as you correctly
perceive, to increase tension.
The things people remember....
Regards,
Alan F

Very interesting. I guess that blows most of my theories out of the water.

I am suspecting that these "rope missing" memories may stem from a behind-the-scenes program. The chasm sequence was heavily documented by the documentary crew on set and i've seen lots of footage from the making of that sequence--and i am sure when Mark Hamill had to throw the rope, he missed. Likely he had to throw it to a stage hand off camera, or a mark on the floor a few yards away--and its also likely that they may have even filmed a few takes in succession, having mark thrown, pull it back in, throw again, et cetera, to give some variations in the takes. I am guessing that a clip which may include or indicate this type of scenario is what is the impetus for all these false memories of it be included in the 1977 cut, or some obscure or unobscure TV broadcast.

I'm still thinking there may be something to this. I plan on reviewing The Making of Star Wars to see if there's anything that might show Mark Hamill missing.

Remembering an edited broadcast of ANH
Time
This has probably been addressed before, but I can't find anything on it.

Back in the late 90s or early 00s, I saw a US TV broadcast of A New Hope that was edited.

I only caught about 10 minutes of it, but I distinctly remember that "Let the Wookiee win" had been cut out. There seemed to be other small cuts and trims, and I got the impresssion the movie had been edited down for time.

This was the only time I have ever seen Star Wars edited (well, aside from this place).

Can anyone tell me any more about this?
