DJ, I realize that there are selfish types that take advantage of the PIF system. I don't have as much experience with this as you, but in my experience the PIF "net" becomes so wide that everybody usually gets what they want in the end, even when the selfish types don't play fair. PIF is voluntary, so if you don't feel like taking a gamble, you don't have to participate. It's been worth it for me (so far).

Come to think of it, I really wish we had some kind of PIF rating system, so that we could root out the cheaters.

Now that I think of it, I had the exact same problem in exactly the same spot. I chalked it up to a possiblem problem with my conversion to DVD or an issue with my DVD player. But maybe something else is going on here.

For the benefit of everyone, here's my understanding of how PIF works. In it's simplest form, PIF means you get it for free, but you pay the shipping to send it on to others. This systems depends on the honesty of everyone involved.

1) The creator sends out a number of copies to the first wave. The exact number the creator sends is really up to him, considering that he will have to cover shipping. For the sake of an example, let's assume the creator sends out 3 copies.

2) Each member of the first wave then announces on the forum that they have the edit, and each of them offers to send it FOR FREE to the first 3 people to PM them. It's up to the person offering the edit to determine if they want to send it overseas, offer any kind of special shipping, or offer more than 3 copies. To continue our example, we have 3 people sending out 3 discs each, for a combined total of 9 discs to the second wave.

3) The second wave does the exact same thing as the first wave, continuing to send out the edit to the third wave. Etc. Etc. It goes on in successive waves until everyone has it.

The later waves have a higher chance of not having to pass it on, simply because everyone who wants it may already have it. But the people in the later waves will also have to wait longer to get it.

Hope this helps.

And Adywan, I'm stoked that you're going with the human hand. That'll be cool.

Adywan,

I finished watching this last night. Words don't really do your effort justice, but I'll say this:

SPECTACULAR

I'd like to nominate you as STAR WARS MAN OF THE YEAR! I really wish I could buy you a couple of beers (or maybe a whole keg) to express my appreciation for what you've done. Thanks. Really.

There are lots of great moments. Here are my thoughts on just some of them:

The TIE approach is great. I like it just the way it is and see no need to change it. I knew you had something special in the works for that, but I was still amazed. I actually said to myself "f*ck yeah" when I saw it, and I'm not someone who usually talks to himself while watching TV.

The color correction is great. I've always felt like an outsider when people complained about the 2004 DVD's color problems. But watching this edit, I began to slowly see that your color palette felt more natural and enjoyable.

The new tactical display that the rebels use to view the Death Star battle is brilliant. I don't know who came up with this idea, but I love it! It makes so much sense.

Ponda Baba's severed arm looks great. But since everyone seems to be talking about it, I'll add my thoughts. I wonder if most casual viewers would look at it and say "What's that thing?" We never really get a good look at his flipper before it's cut off, so this is really more EU continuity than visual continuity. At least with the original, we can tell it's supposed to be a hand. Ever since you posted the human version with the correct sleeve, I'm really starting to think that might be better, and more dramatic.

But for me the best part was something very simple: Luke's reaction to Biggs' death. Something so small, yet so powerful.

One small question: Is there a reason that you decided to leave in the stormtrooper head-bump? I'm not suggesting you change it. I'm just interested to hear your thoughts.

On a sad note, I still haven't found George yet.

I have a question, and remember I know I am an idiot when it come to this stuff, I have some blank DVD-R's setting around and I wanna burn this AVI on to one of them, the movie is a bit longer than the 120 maximum quality allows, but if I wanted to burn the first two hours I could and have the whole movie, but just not all the credits. How can I do that? ( The ending medals ceremony ends at just barely under 2 hours.) I also of course have to convert the AVI.

I used an old version of the VSO DIVX to DVD Converter. It works great, and the picture quality of the DVD is awesome. I have a 32" tube TV that I sit about 10 feet from, so I like to use my DVD player's zoom feature to get the image to about 16x9 on the screen (Gasp! Cropping! Blasphemy!). My point is, the converted DVD was so good that I was able to zoom in with no noticeable blockiness or jaggies. I can only imagine the kind of quality that the DVD-9 will have. In fact, the conversion DVD is so good, I think I might skip the DVD-5 altogether.

FYI, I'm still seeding this thing for those that need it. I'll try to continue until Adywan comes out with his DVD-5.

Sluggo,

I love the 10th anniversary poster too and would like to see it used as a cover. But the angle of the original, especially on the words "Star Wars", makes it a bit of challenge.

Option 1) I think the best option is to just leave the poster as it originally was, use the whole thing, and just photoshop out "The first ten years". Since there aren't correspoonding posters for all of the movies, this will obviously be a one-off cover, so you don't need to worry about consistency when Adywan does the other movies.

Option 2) If you want to take on a bit of work, you could rotate just "Star Wars", but then you have to repair all the elements that touch the words via some Photoshop magic.

Option 3) Your approach of rotating the entire image to get "Star Wars" horizontal results in a crooked Vader and landspeeder, which looks a little weird. For that to work, I think you need to straighten out Vader and the landspeeder (more photoshop work).

I say, go with option 1 and call it a day! Drew Struzan is a good artist and his original poster is great without any major changes.

I would recommend against using a starfield background. Most people might not realize from your draft cover that the image was not cut out of something else, the background of the poster was originally white.

Should have General Grevious been a reconstructed Darth Maul?
Time
I checked out Sluggo's thread at Galacticsenate, and just about everyone (so far) says Maul and Grievous should be separate.

Interestingly, the reason often cited is that Grievous was a very strong character in the EU.

I suddenly have this mental image of the EU as a massive structure of intricate metalwork, whose sole purpose is to elevate a pile of crap high into the sky.

I vote Yes.

Maul being Grievous gives Grievous some depth, and makes him not so much of a throwaway character. It would also show that Palpatine has a history of resurrecting his apprentices and putting them in mechanical suits.

I think Dooku actually works better as a tragic figure who is misled, instead of a genuine Sith apprentice.

But when it comes to making all this happen in an edit of Episode III, I have serious doubts that something can be done in a convincing matter.

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread

Golly Thanks, Slugs.

Sure, I guess I can do that, until someone else comes along who wants it more.

The main thing we need is someone with a real fire in their belly to see this through to completion. At first that was InfoDroid, and then Commander Courage. But that role is pretty vacant at the moment.

I think it would be a good idea to create a Starkiller team. Things have just been too come-and-go to get anything concrete done. And we need to have some way to vote on issues that are unresolved (like Maul=Grievous). That's not to say that we wouldn't take input from those not on the official team. One of the best aspects of this project has been its openness to new ideas from just about anyone. But I think a voting team is needed to make the final say. What do y'all think?

A lot of work was done on Episode I in terms of story, but I don't know how much editing was done. Since Episode I is a kind-of standalone story (aside from the C-3PO angle), I don't see why some work couldn't be restarted on it. I still have the proposed "script" if anyone cares. Any takers?

Adywan, very cool that you're nearing the end. Is your PIF chain for NTSC in the US covered at this point? I'd like to volunteer if you still have an opening.

Owen-Lars-Kenobi, that's a beautiful cover. I take a slight issue with the use of the ESB Leia on the cover, but that's not your fault (it's the original artist's).

Accents are not inherited. And accents learned early in life can be lost later if you're exposed to different accents, especially for long periods of exposure.

indie game dev. vs LucasArts - legal dillema
Time
IANAL, but I think you'll be okay going the independent route as long as no money whatsoever is made. Don't even accept donations. I've seen a number of small independent Star Wars games that were freeware.

Scope may have something to do with it too. If you have a small game that feels small, with a limited number of levels, I think that'd be okay. But if you have a huge game with awesome, professional-looking graphics, you might have some problems as you'd be seen as competing with Lucasarts.

I doubt Lucasarts would accept any contributions from a "nobody". That's not an insult to you, but reflects the way they would see anyone not established in the game industry.

Hardcore music people might be offended by this, but could you reverse the channels so that the FX are right and the music is wrong? I know that certain instruments are supposed to be on the left or right, but I have no idea what they are and I personally wouldn't notice if they were flipped. But I would likely notice the sound FX.

And here' something that I've been wondering about: How do you pronounce "Adywan"?

I agree with vbangle and dumb kid. Bad idea to go poking the beehive.

Lucas does not seem to take kindly to suggestions. This reminds me of the whole Phantom Edit thing. He was going to be featured on Entertainment Tonight, and Lucas pre-empted that with last-minute Episode II footage. If you listen to the Phantom Edit commentary, you can hear that he is trying to reach out to Lucas and offer his services. Then listen to the commentary on Attack of the Phantom, and you'll notice a definite change in tone. He's bitter, critical, and almost resentful. I've always assumed that something happened between the scenes, along the lines of Lucas' lawyers coming down on him like a ton of bricks.

And let's not forget Lucas' recent letter to the fan club members: "I know that some of you haven't liked every single thing that I've done with the saga, and that you have a strong sense of ownership over all things Star Wars. But take that passion and devotion and channel it into a creative project of your own."

Info Wanted: the bare minimum - what would you want put back?
Time
Out of these (and assuming the deletions you mentioned), the only must-haves for me are:

2. Mos Eisley-the shot that had a dinosaur and a falling jawa pasted over
3. "How long have you had these droids?"-without the dinosaur walking in front of everything

The rest I can live with. The SEs are so riddled with changes that this cut-and-paste compromise would never achieve anything like a decent OOT. If this came out, I doubt I would buy it.

If Lucas really wants to please the fans, he can remaster the movie from scratch. But for some reason, he seems determined to not give the fans what they want.

A New Thought on George
Time
On the original point of this thread, there's a part of me that wonders if Lucas WAS writing the PT for someone - his kids. I think his kids had a lot of behind-the-scenes input about what we eventually saw.

If I recall correctly, he stated that he made the Ewok movies to appeal to his kids. This makes sense since he was already divorced by that point. And don't forget that the only reason we got to see the conclusion of the Clone Wars cartoons was that his son wanted to know what happened. And consider all the cameos his kids had in the PT.
