How different in quality will the PAL version be from the NTSC?

Will there be any point in NTSC users converting the PAL version to their format to watch (rather than waiting for you to do it)?

In my opinion, unless you have absolutely no patience, you whould just wait a week for the NTSC version. Converting the PAL version will be a pain, and you'll still have the audio speedup (if that bothers you).

I agree that Needa's ship should be replaced. What's there almost looks like a TIE Bomber. This would be the perfect place for an Imperial Shuttle.

I'll give Episode One something...
Time
Episode I was the last time I really got into Star Wars big time. The years leading up to 1999 had been great: I bought the "last time" VHS release of the OOT, I went crazy collecting vintage stuff, Kenner released a new line of Star Wars toys and I went crazy for those too. Then the SEs came out, and I happily ate them up, since DVDs were still a niche market and I wasn't worried about not ever getting the OOT again. George Lucas was still a genius.

I enjoyed the hype leading up to Episode I, and I blew several hundred that night the toys came out at midnight. I thought the KFC/Pizza Hut/Taco bell commercials were enjoyable.

I got the soundtrack when it came out. It was great, but the name of one of the tracks gave away Qui Gon's fate. I was really ticked about that, since I'd been trying to avoid spoilers.

I saw the movie 6 times in the theater over the course of several months. I remember on the first viewing (I was 29) I was blown away by the lightsaber battle, and the awesomeness of it was enough to wash away my temporary annoyances with Jar Jar. I remember I specifically went one time to try to catch all the "hidden" stuff, like the George in the arch. Only after repeat viewings did Jar Jar become too much for me to take.

But after that, after all the money spent and the hype, I just felt TIRED and burnt out. Looking back, I guess it was inevitable I'd come down off my high. I soldiered on through the rest of the prequels, but it was never the same. And I was slowly losing faith in George.

SomethingStarWarsRelated,

I checked out your DSII clip. That scene from ROTS might work in some way, but its placement there is confusing. Vader walks off a bridge, wipe, Vader walks on a bridge. Is it the same bridge? Has time passed? If some other scene can be inserted inbetween, it might transition better.

Some of you guys care to back me up defending Ady's edit on there?

I don't know how effective it would be if a bunch of us joined over there to stick up for Adywan. Since you're established there, it looks like you're doing a good job fighting the good fight. I suggest you just try tp present a few facts to them, and give them a link to this thread. If they care, they might read a few pages and get a different perspective. If they don't care, well, there's not much that you can do but roll your eyes.

In general, I've noticed that people outside of OT.com seem to get a little weirded out by Star Wars fan edits. They have this fossilized concept of what Star Wars is, and when someone tries to come along and change it, they get very defensive, almost as if you'd insulted their religion. And then there's the EU, which has been grafted onto Star Wars, and god forbid you go invalidating anyone's EU. Except when George does it. Only he has the right to make changes.

And Adywan, I love the 3D Jabba scene. Do you have something up your sleeve here?

Now that this whole shield debate has come up, I admit it doesn't make very good sense. However, I've never thought about it until now. A gungan type of shield seems like the best option to me. If Adywan wants to give it a try, I think a shot of the AT-AT's as they pass through the shield would be great.

Anyways.

The idea behind having the DS II at the beginning of ESB was to make its sudden appearance in ROTJ less of a rehash. But ultimately, I don't know how effective this is. It's a little pointless to show it in ESB when it never really plays any role in the movie.

But I've always thought the beginning of Empire was pretty slow. It needs some kind of "WOW" shot to open with. Not using the scale of the Executor in a flyover shot is a missed opportunity in my book. I'd love to see Adywan move the Executor reveal to the opening of the movie, with some kind of newly created flyover shot of the Executor dwarfing a few Star Destroyers.

Official: 'THE CLONE WARS' movie in Theaters 8/15/08
Time
My oldest son is 5 and I know he will want to see this in the theater. He loves the Clone Wars cartoons and asks to watch them all the time (ADM's version). BTW, I've never understood people's dislike for Tartakovsky's Clone Wars cartoons. I always joked that they are the best of the prequels. They're filled with moments that just feel like Star Wars: good character development, oodles of properly-done OT references, speederbike jousting, clonetroopers hurling through space to board another ship, and to top it off, a pretty likeable Anakin. I could do without the Kit Fisto and Mace segments from part one though.

Anyway, I feel like the continuity pooch has been screwed, so I'm learning to not think about that so much. I see every new thing with the Star Wars label as basically "based on Star Wars". If this new series can capture a little of the Star Wars magic and not slap me in the face with the trademark Lucas attempts at humor, I might enjoy it. I'll definitely give it a shot.

I think it will all boil down to how much DIRECT involvement Lucas has had in this project. The less involvement, the better. I've come to realize that George doesn't really get what makes Star Wars great.

Blade Runner: The Version You've Never Seen Before (Update: Beta Released)

Zombie,

I love your idea for this, and I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Tangential question: In the Dangerous Days documentary they showed the storyboards for the alternate opening sequence where Deckard retires the replicant at the farm. I've read online (like Wikipedia or IMDB) about this before, and I what I read implied that these scenes were actually filmed. Do you know if they were?

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread
Time
[austinpowers]Please allow myself to repeat myself:[/austinpowers]

Of course, on its own, the original Star Wars is a great movie that doesn't need any changes. I don't think a person on this board would want to see it disappear forever, even if Lucas had released Adywan's edit in '97. No one here is looking to take away from its greatness.

Mojo, I hope you are not falling into the Lucas fallacy that there can only be one version of Star Wars. No one here wants to throw the original Star Wars out with the trash, or to say that the Starkiller Ranch version of Episode IV (if it even gets made) is better than the original. Star Wars is one of the best movies ever made in the history of cinema. We only want to create an alternate version that blends better with the entire saga. And we can only do so much with what we have.

But when you are done filming your own prequel trilogy, which matches the OT in terms of continuity and tone, please let us know.

This place is a playground of ideas. I respect yours, but I disagree.

The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread
Time
Mojo,

I think the goal of this project has always been to alter the Original Trilogy as little as possible, changing mostly the prequels to fit with the OT better. But this has also been a place where people throw out wacky ideas (well, OK, most of that was me) just for the sake of entertaining them.

Of course, on its own, the original Star Wars is a great movie that doesn't need any changes. I don't think a person on this board would want to see it disappear forever, even if Lucas had released Adywan's edit in '97. No one here is looking to take away from its greatness.

But when you start heaping all the other movies on top of the original movie, things don't all fit together so well, and a lot of people can't enjoy them together. I can enjoy 4 and 5, but 6 gets on my nerves, and then the prequels just make me sad. It's like two halves of a bridge, each one starting from the opposite side, and they don't meet in the middle! The Starkiller Ranch is about fixing that bridge.

The Vader/Ben fight in Star Wars is a good example of this. If you just see ANH, you can enjoy it. You've never seen a saber duel before, you don't know how these things work, and you're amazed. But when you see all the other Episodes, the duel becomes slow and unexciting in comparison. Obi Wan moves around like a statue, while Dooku managed to do flips off balconies. So you add in a little music and pick up the pace through editing (as Adywan has done), and you've got a more "comparable" duel. You haven't changed the characters any, and you haven't added any unrealistic superpowers.
