Well, the torrent just started, so what do you expect? If you're looking to leech, you might want to give it a week.

And besides, the person who started the torrent also started the PIF chain. I guess someone forgot to send you your personalized, solid-gold, archive-quality, professionally-pressed DVD.

For anyone interested in the PURIST edition:

I've just sent out the first three copies in a PIF chain. The people I sent them to are:

Hotrod (UK)
gorilla (US)
stossmo (US)

They'll each send it out to three people. If you have any interest in this version, pick a person in your country and send him a PM asking to be on the next level of the chain.

I may look into setting up a torrent as well, but I'm not really sure how to do that. Can anyone here give me some advice on that?

Adywan,

I wanted to bring up a particular audio change that nobody's really commented on.

During the conference scene on the Death Star, you've removed the sound of Vader's fast breathing as he chokes Motti. I'd never really thought about it that much, but I guess it makes sense that Vader would actually breathe normally while doing the choking. So did you make this change because you thought the fast breathing was stupid, or was it something else?

What order would you show the Star Wars movies to your kids?
Time
4-6, 1-3

But this is a bit of an unrealistic scenario you've set up. It implies that the child has no exposure to Star Wars until one day, when you sit them down and they suddenly have the patience to watch a 6-movie marathon. Even if you break it up across 6 days, you're assuming that they don't know anything about these characters and their origins yet. In my house, that's just not possible.

With my oldest son (now 5) I never really had a plan to indoctrinate him into Star Wars, and so he's just picked up bits of movies along the way. The first one he actually sat all the way through was ESB when he was 4. (Which speaks volumes to me about how a great story doesn't need "kiddie" elements to appeal to a child). Now his two favorites are the clone wars cartoons (the best part of the prequels if you ask me) and ROTS. But in my household, ANH (formerly Dr M's version, currently Adywan's Revisited) gets the most play.

(My youngest son, now 2 years old, is fascinated by Darth Vader. He does the trademark breathing and sings Darth Vader's theme. He even asks to watch "sawas".)

Why is the GOUT not anamorphic?

I believe Steve Sansweet discussed the issue at a fan conference in 2006 (possibly ComicCon?). There used to be a video of it online somewhere. He basically tried to discredit the criticisms, saying that the transfer on the GOUT was very good, and that only a very small number of people were making a big deal out of really tiny black lines that you could only see if you look real close......

If someone could supply a link to this or point me in the right direction I'd appreciate it.

Ask, and you shall receive.

As a matter of fact, there were still some close-ups that GL wanted to shoot of Mark before filming wrapped on SW, but Mark's face was too badly damaged to do them, so they had to shoot some long-shots to fill in, using a double.

Do you know what scenes these were?

Why is the GOUT not anamorphic?

Johnboy3434 said:

Companies have been known to put out garbage DVDs, but I just found the fact that they didn't trim 12.5% off the top and bottom of the picture an act of unusual laziness, and wondered if they've even acknowledged questions about this.

Here are 2 possibilities:

1) In 2006, they're about to convert the laserdisc master to DVD. Some tech notices that the laserdisc master won't support anamorphic without upscaling, and mentions it to his superior, since ANAMORPHIC IS THE STANDARD. Word comes down from on high that the GOUT will be non-anamorphic. End of discussion.

2) Here's another possibility. Maybe the GOUT was made years ago, in the late 90s, when non-anamorphic was still common. For some reason, GL sat on this for years. (We all know George has a tendency to finish things and then sit on them, like the cgi yoda in TPM). This probably cost something back when it was done, so GL decides in 2006 to just use it as an "extra", and make some money off of what was otherwise a bad investment. Again, some tech probably mentions that ANAMORPHIC IS THE STANDARD. Word comes down from on high that the GOUT will be non-anamorphic. End of discussion.

Either way, someone has to make the decision that they're going ahead with the non-anamorphic version. I suppose that's a form of laziness.

I believe Steve Sansweet discussed the issue at a fan conference in 2006 (possibly ComicCon?). There used to be a video of it online somewhere. He basically tried to discredit the criticisms, saying that the transfer on the GOUT was very good, and that only a very small number of people were making a big deal out of really tiny black lines that you could only see if you look real close. This made no sense to me, since it sounded like a description of interlacing. I lost a lot of respect for Steve that day.

opinions - how the release of the original to theatres was different than the new three films.
Time
I saw Star Wars in 1977, when I was 5 years old. I think my dad took me to see it about 12 times. I must have seen it in a monaural theater (without stereo sound), because there's something very familiar about the mono mix to me. Because of my age, I really don't have a lot of direct memories of seeing Star Wars in the theater (like waiting in line, seeing crowds, etc). I vaguely remember seeing the Holiday Special - I was too young to realize how horrible it was. But I remember the toys vividly. God how I played with those toys. The toys WERE Star Wars for me.

Certain songs from the late 70s take me back. Suddenly I'm no longer an adult but a little boy thinking about Star Wars in the huge back seat of my dad's Lincoln Mark V.

Star Wars' effect on the late 70s cannot easily be described. It was the movie that everyone HAD to see. The fact that my dad took me to see it 12 times means he must have enjoyed it immensely himself. My grandfather even saw it. I recall seeing a couple of those 70s vans painted with a Star Wars theme.

When ESB came out, I was 8, and my pump was primed. I remember my dad had bought the story book early, and he actually spilled the beans about Vader being Luke's father BEFORE I saw the movie. I vividly remember the day my mom took me to see it. ESB was hard for me to handle, it was sad and scary. Looking back, ESB is a very adult tale, with great acting from the major players. It's the thinking man's Star Wars.

Shortly after I saw ESB, Vader made a guest appearance at a local mall. The coolness of this cannot be overestimated. Here's the pic:
http://www.erikstormtrooper.com/mevader.jpg

When I saw ROTJ, I thought it was the best of the movies. I continued with the toys for a year more, but as the OT faded, so did my interest. As I matured, I realized ROTJ was inferior in many ways. But as an ending to the OT, it still serves its purpose, and I can accept it on that level.

If I had to summarize the OT in one word, I would say ADVENTURE.
The PT in one word: CHARACTER.

The prequels have been a let down for me. They progressively got better, but what they set out to do was never achieved. The big question for the PT is, how does Anakin Skywalker become Darth Vader. Unfortunately, Lucas could never decide on the exact reason, aside from some vague sense of loss. One of the coolest and most mysterious villains was made into a whiney airhead.

In the PT, all the spectacle of what we see is pointless, and except for small parts of Episode I, there is no fun.

The PT is ultimately a wasted opportunity. And that makes me sad more than anything else. But I stick around here, hoping that some day someone will have the vision to transform the PT into something I can enjoy.

This is more than we got from Lucas for the 30th!

Yeah... Did anyone else feel that the whole 30th anniversary just sort of came and went? A couple of TV ads here and there, but not much more, that I saw. Maybe it's because I've been burned by hype so much and had such low expectations of anything LFL does anymore.

It's not just you. There definitely was a lack of promotion and product. But hey, why do anything special for the 30th anniversary, when the DVDs will sell themsleves precisely because of the 30th anniversary? Better to save the super special box set for a year when the sales are likely to be weak. Star Wars is not about GIVING, it's about GETTING.

I have to admit, at least Lucas was consistent. In keeping with his tradition of dumping on the original version of Star Wars, he did not make a big deal out of its 30th anniversary.

Help.

I tried downloading the Purist Edition from the binaries group, but I can't get it to go together. Is there a torrent anywhere that I can access, because without a torrent I don't know how I can see this version. I already have the Revisited DVD 5 but would love to see this alternate "purist" version.

I will soon be starting a PIF chain for the Purist edition. I'm just waiting on the disc to arrive. Once I get it, I'll be sending each of these guys a disk:

Hotrod (UK)
gorilla (US)
stossmo (US)

If you have any interest in this version, just PM one of them and ask to be on the next level of the chain. They'll each send it out to three people.

the point is there is really no reason for either the republic or the CIS to be interested in Tatooine. Unless Anakin has gone rogue yet again.

I take it you haven't seen the trailer? Jabba's son is kidnapped and Yoda sends Anakin and the clones there to negotiate and rescue Jabba's son, or some ridiculous thing like that.

Yeah. Maybe they can pay the kidnappers off with republic credits.

"Republic credits?!? Republic credits are no good out here. I need something more real..."

This makes perfect sense.

If you guys are still shopping around for cantina-type music, there are two songs that I can also recommend (but sadly can't offer much concrete info on at the moment):

1) There was a cantina-type song that was featured in the Episode I and X-Wing: Alliance games. I'm guessing it could easily be ripped from the CD if needed. However, it had a very "AM radio" sound.

2) Several years ago the Lexus commercials used to feature an upbeat jazzy song. I thought it was VERY similar to the music for the Mos Eisley cantina, kind of like what they might have played if we'd stuck around for a third song.

Erikstormtrooper, i am also waiting for someone to torrent the Purist edition. But are you going to PIF it? I may in turn PIF it to some people i know. Once you're ready then i'll give you a PM.

dumb_kid has kindly offered to send me the Purist Edition. I've had two offers for the first level of the PIF chain, but I need to confirm that they have the ability to pass it on. So I have one more spot. But I'll be a little picky and ask that you send it to three people on OT.com. You're of course welcome to pass it on others, including friends, but I'd like to see OT.com members covered first.

So if anyone is willing to fill this last spot in the first level, please PM me.

I've been hoping that someone might put up a torrent for the Purist Edition, but it's been a week and that hasn't happened.

So I'd like to get a PIF chain started for this. Is anyone who has the Purist edition willing to mail me a copy? If so, please PM me. Once I get it, I'll mail it out to the next three people.

Lucas to sue Star Wars designer
Time
skyjedi2005 said:

all lucas has to do is have a company make full stormtrooper suits that are complete replicas and sell them. then he will have a legitimate item and the black market guys will have some competition.

This is actually what's happening There are 2 licensed companies that have plans to release full trooper armor in the near future: Rubies and Museum Replicas (NOT Master Replicas). I think preliminary pics of each have surfaced, and initial impressions are not very good. So there may technically still be a market for Andrew Ainsworth's product. The "from original molds" aspect is largely debatable, his legal ground is VERY shaky, but I haven't heard anything denying that his products are of a very high quality.

Further proof GL has lost his mind... Clone Wars
Time
Doctor M said:

What I really don't get is why GL didn't go for a series that took place after the OT.
It would be far more interesting.
As we've seen from books and computer games there's a lot of ways to go from there... and telling that story is something he had always planned on.

I would guess that Lucas is reluctant to write himself into a corner for the OT, since he may be (secretly) entertaining the possibility of a sequel trilogy some day. Besides, he probably thinks the PT is more fresh on people's - and especially kids' - minds.

On using the Y-Wings, this is really the only thing I've seen that gives me a positive feel for this cartoon. I know the ships are just window dressing, but this is the kind of hat tip that should have been in the prequels from the start.
