i think de-SEing ANH would be a hard task, as they weren't flat out new shots as they were adding things to existing shots, ruining them in the process. Same with RotJ, I would think.

Yeah, that's a good point. Shame.

I think it would be possible to pull off for ANH - it would just require an Adywan-magnitude of perseverance to pull off. Start by using Adywan's AVCHD of  ANH-SE. Pop in a few scenes from ANH-R (like officer's getting blasted in the chest, the stormtrooper road-check in Mos Eisley, etc.). Then for the rest use a stabilized GOUT. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been tried yet.

GOUT image stabilization - Released

For Empire and Jedi, 70mm recreations aren't strictly possible, but the '93 and 5.1 soundtracks on the previous versions already sound great.  I've been considering doing small revisions on Empire, to substitute the hacked up music cues with how they are in the SE and add the missing snowspeeder sound, but those are only minor changes.  Jedi I believe I am quite satisfied with as it is.

Related question: What are the differences (if any) between the 85 and 93 mixes of ESB?

And can Puggo's super-8 capture of ESB be used as a source for any 70 mm sounds?

I disagree.  What percentage of people who would buy a Star Wars DVD (outside of this forum) will ever see this or even hear about it?  Lucas will sell a ton of OT Blu-rays when they come out, no matter the source or quality.

I should clarify: I meant the next offering of the original versions of the OT. The GOUT will no longer cut it the next time around. We will get something like GOUT 2.0, with minor improvements and probably anamorphic.

Zombie,

Thanks for sharing the news on this. I can't wait to see it!

I think Moth3r's point about the DVD format not allowing 720p is valid. Is this really a DVD, or maybe an AVCHD?

I just thought everyone should know that after Lucasfilm outdid the LD preservations with the GOUT, Lucasfilm’s GOUT has now been outdone by a LD preservation. Fuck you, Lucasfilm!

Love the last sentence! And this may be the most important part of this project. It raises the bar for Lucasfilm. In order to be commercially attractive, their next offering of the OT will have to improve over this project. But knowing Lucasfilm, it will only be a slight improvement.

Girls/wives who like Star Wars
Time

About 15 years ago I went on a few dates with a girl who was into the EU. It was interesting ... and weird. Reminds me of the Seinfeld quote: "All of a sudden it hit me, I realized what the problem is; I can't be with someone like me. I hate myself!"

My wife tolerates my Star Wars fanatacism. She doesn't sit down with me and watch the movies, but my 2 sons do. That's good enough for me. She's even asked me if I had any interest in joining the 501st or Rebel Legions.

However, she shot down my idea to display, in our entertainment unit above the TV, all 12 vintage action figues in the original display stand. Of all the nerdy things I could do, I though that was pretty classy.

That said, if she ever tries to put an Edward Cullen picture anywhere in the living room, I swear there's gonna be a fight.

I'm wondering about the above still.  Is Luke outside or inside?  The set makes him look like he is walking inside of a hallway when he ought to be in an alley between buildings.

Now that you're pointing this out, there isn't any window frame or anything, it feels to me the corridor ends on some kind of terrace without real ending, but it doesn't mean it's outside, it could just be the open entrance of the building…

That's what I'm saying.  It just looks odd to me.  I'm not suggesting a change or anything, I just wanted other peoples two cents on it.

Sluggo, now that you mention it, this does look odd.

Here's a personal anecdote about the random falling object / Luke's hand / broken vane piece:

I was watching ESB with my 7 year-old son a few weeks ago. When the whatever-it-was fell down, my son was very confused. He asked what fell, and I didn't have a good answer for him. I told him it was Luke's jacket. I know it wasn't, but it always seemed to look like an empty jacket falling.

Granted, confusing a 7 year-old is not that hard, but this is a good example of how the unknown object somewhat ruins the impact of the scene. Half your brain is thinking "whoa, that's a long drop", and the other half of your brain is thinking "wtf was THAT?"

Some kind of brief shot of Luke knocking part of the vane off (with his hand, butt, etc.) would go a long way to fixing this.

My humble 2 cents.

Okay, can someone who's into schematics and stuff tell me, is the Death Star supposed to be a sphere, or an ovoid? In every shot it's about 10% off being a circle. Either way, I plan on making it perfectly spherical where I can.

DE

DE, the original Death Star model is definitely not a sphere. I've been following a thread over on the Replica Prop Forum, where this guy is building a full-size Death Star prop. It was definitely established that it's an ovoid.

Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side (the TM edit) (Released)

One thing I've been thinking about a lot is Trooperman's excellent take on the lightsaber duel. One small problem is the way Anakin just vanishes when Yoda shows up, then he jumps out again when the tower starts to fall.  So I've been trying to think of a better way to make Anakin disappear.

(Pending the availablility and feasibility of shots,) maybe we can use the useless "darkness" part to our advantage:

After the power is cut and it goes dark, Anakin turns off his saber and disappears in the darkness. Dooku glances around for a moment and then the power comes back on. Then Yoda shows up, and we continue with it as Trooperman edited.

Possible?
