Info: Complete Star Tours 2 (many clips available within)
Time

Thanks. I'm a big fan of the original version, so this was great to check out.

The PT aspects are not as heavy as I thought they would be, but they still don't fit in the timeline. Is there some explanation for the time jumping?

Having 3PO as the pilot is a brilliant move, and I'm not sure why they didn't do that the first time.

And would it have killed them to include a 3D recreation of the original version?

I don't know if Virtual Clonedrive is free, but you may get the same results with DVDshrink, which is free. (I don't know, because it has been a while since I used it, but I believe you can load the ISO and click "backup" to backup to your regular VIDEO_TS folder. Hope that helps!)

I don't think DVDShrink works with AVCHD files, which is what the ISOs contain.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Just finished watching WP3R2. Everything's looking very good. Harmy, if you snuck in any re-specializations, I missed them :)

I did notice flickering in many scenes, as others have already pointed out. Didn't see it mentioned for these scenes though:

  • 24:46-25:07 - Flickering walls in Luke's garage.
  • 27:53, 28:04, 28:10 - Flickering rocks behind sandpeople.
  • 28:08 - Flickering rocks in the foreground.
  • Obi-Wan's brown cloak flickers almost constantly in these desert shots. It seems the almost-black shadows flicker the most.

The skin tones look very good in these desert scenes this time around.

I'm wondering if the shake added to the exterior shot of Ben's hut is a little overdone.

Here's the rebels landing on Endor with some footage from a fan film added, just to see how it would look:

Visually, this works very well.

Pacing and plot wise, I'm confused.

I'm not sure why we need to show the imperials watching the shuttle land where it's not supposed to. What does this show? Does this mean they know these are rebels? Are they alerting base that they've seen this? Are these supposed to be the same biker scouts that we see a few minutes later?

And I think the binocular shot watching the shuttle carries on for a bit too long. You can definitely cut that to just the landing part to communicate the same thing.

Well I saw TPM in 3D, and I will admit that I enjoyed it.

The 3D was well dun, considering that it was a conversion from 2D 35mm. Some may say that this is like converting a B&W movie to color, but some times if dun well that can look rather good. Other times if dun poorly it looks rely bad.

This 3D converting was dun well and looks rather good.

And if you thought that TPM characters did not have any depth, well they still don’t but the 3D glasses give you the elusion that they do. LOL!

PS

I Know I am feeding the GL monster, but hay I did not buy the blu rays!

Ben thar, dun thaht.

Well played, phrink!

15:55 - The Rebel tactical table is too blue. I think this is an SE issue.

Thanks, been looking for that. I think there was maybe one more instance of that, so if anyone found it, let me know.

In WP2.3, the other instances of the table are at 11:17 and 21:57.

And a despecialization I think you missed: at 22:03, the aurebesh for Yavin appears on the Death Star screen. I know this was fixed in DEED v1.

I finished watching Workprint 2.3, and I noticed 2 things:

11:25 - ATTACK OF THE JAGGIES. I know I've brought this up before, but these jaggies in the xwing still stand out to me. I really think manually rotating the xwing will avoid this issue. I'd be willing to take a shot at it myself frame by frame in Photoshop, if that would help.

12:46 - As the shot fades from the explosions to Luke in the cockpit, the screen looks gray and blocky.

15:55 - The Rebel tactical table is too blue. I think this is an SE issue.

Reel 1 of WP3 looks good. I think everything I noticed has been brought up already. Since you're the one with the references, Harmy, I'll just trust in your color choices. FYI, the only way I would get WP3R1 to play was to download the latest version of VLC Player (the old version I had worked for all the other workprints and videos).

The blue haze around the Falcon's engines was in DEED 1.0. I pointed it out at the time, but Harmy said he wouldn't be doing anything about it. I'm not sure any of the pre-dvd releases have the resolution to prove this one way or another. To me, it looks a lot like the blue haze that surrounds the Death Star explosion.

The burn mark is a neat touch, but I think it's distracting and takes away from the viewing experience. It's something that would be removed in a serious (i.e., non-Lucasfilm) restoration.

Review of TPM by slantmagazine: http://www.slantmagazine.com/film/review/star-wars-episode-i-the-phantom-menace/6039

They don't specifically address the 3D, but otherwise this is a great review. Snippet:

Every so often, though, the film surprises you with a visual idea that's both simple and effective: Federation tanks emerging from behind Naboo's rolling green hills, a podracer running on one engine spiraling through the air before crashing, an enormous Gungan shield materializing around their army. But such ideas are uncommon and fleeting, never left long enough to savor, and they are frustratingly counterpointed by idiocy: a ridiculous-looking fish is eaten whole by an even more ridiculous-looking fish, a Gungan leader chortles messily (twice), Anakin yells "yippee!" on at least two occasions, droids incongruously mimic the Three Stooges. The Phantom Menace is irredeemably plagued by such ridiculousness, and it seems incredible to me that so much stupidity could have made it into a film this expensively and meticulously coordinated. I can accept that a project this large could sink under its own weight, and that its most pressing issues were too fundamental to the material to have been amended through simple suggestion. But how is it possible that of the hundreds of people materially and emotionally invested in the production of this project, nobody pointed out that maybe Jar-Jar stepping in shit did not belong in this movie?

Return of the Pug (ROTP) - webpage and screenshots (Released)

Hey Puggo, awesome news! I wonder if this will be useful for a certain despecializied edition :) I always enjoy your making-of docs, so I look forward to seeing your latest one.

Have you happened to listen to the mono track for any dialog or effect differences?

Weren't you also working on capturing all of the the Kenner Movie Viewer reels (as shown in Rescuing Star Wars)? Or was it just that one?

Harmy,

I finished watching the latest workprint. All of the despecializations look excellent (well, except for the censored laser you snuck in :D ). It's gotten to the point where, even if I pause and look for traces of the changes, they're usually impossible to spot. I was really impressed with how you've been able to restore the shots of the falcon sitting in the DS hangar.

Just a few things to note:

53:25 and 53:44 - There seems to be some blue tint to space along the bottom of the window. Looks like possibly a rectangular junk matte around the planet. I don't know if it's supposed to be like this or if this is a result of brightening. I think bspaunhorst pointed this out on the last page, but I can't see his screenshot right now.

1:10:28 - The orange light reflecting off Luke's armor seems a bit too artificial and oversaturated.

Also (sorry, I didn't note the timecode), but when the Falcon is sitting in the DS hangar and vader is walking up to it, the stars outside the window seemed pretty unstable. Were those restored from the GOUT?

Thanks for all the hard work!

Lucas' Red Tails

McCallum: I know, but I understand that completely. It’s just a question I can’t answer. Obviously I have my own personally feelings, I hope that he does it, but I don’t have major arguments with him about it. I think that’s a decision he has to come to on his own as time comes by.

This puts Rick McCallum in a whole new light for me. How long has he been biting his tongue at Lucasfilm?
