Erikstormtrooper, you're exploiting my soft spot.  You know I don't like to leave things unfinished....

"Exploiting" is a little harsh, but if that's what it takes to get things rolling...

:D

Glad to see you're thinking about this. I just think this should be out there for everyone to enjoy. It may inspire someone to do their own edit of Episode II.

Hey Trooperman!

It's always nice when you make a Special Guest Appearance :D

If there's any part of you that's willing, I still think you should make an effort to finish this up. After all these years, it still manages to impress many people (including me).

If you need a refresher, here's a post you wrote in November 0f 2009, on getting "the movie in at least a watchable condition":

A new low in Star Wars games

So I tried to see if I can download a free demo of this thru my xbox. Interestingly, there is no free demo. Since most xbox games seem to get a demo, I wonder if they knew this was a stinker.

I'd say no more than half of Xbox games get a demo.  Kinect Disneyland, arguably one of the best Kinect games (er... for kids) has no demo either.  And Happy Action Theatre, the actual best Kinect game, does.  So there you go.

Due to my limited experience with xbox, I'll grant that probably only half of the games get demos. But there is a demo for Kinect Disneyland; I downloaded it. It does seem like most of the major releases get demos.

Recommendations for Media Players
Time

Some good feedback in here.

The WDTV Live seems to have some issues with streaming content over the network, especially if the files are large. Otherwise, the player seems pretty solid.

Most other players seem to have issues of one kind or another. The best one seems to be the Dune, which is simply out of my price range.

I'm also thinking about upgrading to an Oppo Blu-Ray player. Can anyone comment on the file support for that?

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

The latest build of VLC doesn't seem to handle 720p video files on my underpowered laptop, either. Switched over to PotPlayer to view it. Plays it fine, better than anything else I have, but the interface is not exactly to my liking. Does the job, though, I guess.

Believe it or not, PotPlayer actually worked for me, although the aspect ratio is a little off. Thanks!

@ Erikstormtrooper: Try with "Media Player Classic," by far is the best option for HD playback in a PC ;-)

I've tried Media Player Classic - Home Cinema version 1.6.0.4014, but the video playback it too slow and gets quickly out of sync with the audio.

Recommendations for Media Players
Time

I'm looking for something that I can connect to my TV and use to play media files of different types (mkv, mpg, mp4, avi, divx, etc).

I have a laptop that I can use for this, but it's really overkill for the job, plus it doesn't give me more than 2.0 sound.

My Blu-Ray player only does MPG and AVI, while my Xbox 360 only likes certain AVIs.

What has everyone here used? Would something like Roku or Popcorn Hour fit my needs?

Thanks!

Harmy,

In my typical delayed fashion, I finally got around to checking out Reels 3 and 4 of WP3. Everything's looking very good! Some of the shots inside the cantina seemed overly warm, but I'll trust your references.

My usual laptop must be dying on me, because I had to switch to the wife's to watch these 2 files. Not even the latest version of VLC Player helped my old laptop.

Cropping the Original Trilogy : 35mm vs dvd (gout)
Time

Harmy said:

Well, there isn't much more left to say, short of confirming that the 2004 master is cropped less than the GOUT but still there is some cropping compared to all the information available on a 35mm print. I totally understand it being cropped; most damage usually appears on the edges of prints and even on the print, the edge of the image isn't always exactly the same, so you need to leave some space for that. What I absolutely don't understand is why on earth is every shot in every transfer cropped differently? Why would they do that? I'd understand every reel having slightly different cropping but why every shot? And the amount of cropping is so small that I don't buy that it's to keep the action in the centre. Also if they just cropped by the same amount on all sides, they'd keep the originally intended centre, which should be most desirable with this minute amount of cropping.

I can't speculate about the scene-to-scene cropping. That really is confusing too.

But for the overall cropping, maybe the technology of the time made it difficult to capture the whole frame. Remember that the blu-ray of Phantom Menace has more picture information that the previous version; this was supposedly due to some technological limitation in the past.
