It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P
Time

nightstalkerpoet,

I appreciate what you're getting at. Where has the negativity gotten us, right? Well, it's gotten us noticed by George. Don't forget that the negativity about Jar Jar got him almost completely removed from Episodes II and III.

If Lucas released the OOT on BD, I doubt he'd get labeled as a flip-flopper. He would be the good guy, giving fans what they wanted.

Lucas could package the OOT together with a blu-ray box set of his latest special editions, label them "Crap I found in a salt mine", and people would hail him as a cultural hero. He could even do a commentary track about how disappointing they were, and slap a $200 price tag on the whole thing. People would eat it up, including me. He really can't lose.

Still, we could probably change our message from "You suck! Give us the originals!" to "Give us the originals. We love them!"

So in the meantime, what can we do on our own? Well, we have top men working on it.

TOP MEN.

George's Armchair Pyschologists Thread (was: The NEW and IMPROVED George bashing thread!!!)
Time

Since we've been derailed by the "edited for television" meme:

I'm surprised that more studios don't offer a family-friendly track like the one offered for Avatar.

The TV (and airline) cuts are approved by the studios, so what harm could it be to use those? As long as the original track is also offered on disc, who could possibly complain about a family-friendly track?

All these popup companies have shown there's a market for this.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Hey Harmy,

I finally finished looking at the workprint. Things are looking great. Since the colors have been discussed and addressed, I won't go into that. I had a few other comments though:

30:54 - The sky around Ben's hut looks pixelated (especially on the right side), as if it was brightened too much.

41:42 - The "cutout" where the ronto used to be in the background is now seamless. Great job!

48:41 - The new fade (where the Jabba scene used to be) looks great!

Once again, thanks for doing this, Harmy!

Nice new clip, Harmy. I like the stars. I noticed that there seems to be black mask around the edges of the star destroyer; this mask seems to eat up stars before they're actually blocked by the ship's edge.

In terms of the stars flickering, I do notice that they change in intensity during the pan down, but stay at the same brightness once the camera stops.

So the clip before this one was a test to see how much we'd complain? Well, at least I said something. Note to myself: be a picky jerk in Harmy's thread.

Yoda: CGI vs Puppet
Time

I'm with Puggo. As long as the original is properly restored, I wouldn't mind some tweaking by Lucas. But I would prefer it to be minimal and not intrusive (something Lucas is not a master of).

The movie Where the Wild Things Are used CGI to great effect in order to give the monsters believable facial expressions. Something similar could be used for Yoda.

Aalenfae's PREQUEL TRILOGY (Heavily delayed - computer exploded)
Time

The new clip is pretty good. Most of the stupid stuff is once again removed.

I'm not a big fan of the elevator shaft/falling ship sequence. I think it can be removed completely if you remove everything from 0:40 to 1:13. It can go something like this:

1. They call R2 and wait for the elevator.

2. The ship is hit. Right as it starts to lurch, add a shake, and then cut.

(Optional battle scenes here. But please, no falling. It makes no sense [even in Star Wars] and makes my head hurt.)

3. The three of them get up (notice, they are in front of an elevator). Obi Wan has been awakened by the explosion.

Anybody know where I can get the actual engine sounds of Grievous' flagship and stuff like that? It'd make replacing the music much easier (And eliminate the choppy  transition, which (unless I wanted screaming battle droids), was unavoidable.

These engine sounds might be available from the Clone Wars CG cartoons.

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Harmy,

I finally finished watching the first part of the workprint. Everything looks good except for the star warping issue I mentioned during the flyover.

About the colors, I see there's been some considerable discussion about that, and you plan to pull back on the reds a bit. The comparison bkev posted is a good example of the monochrome look I'm talking about. The shade of Luke's hair compared to his flesh tone is too similar to my eyes. Add in the slight brightening from recovering the blacks, and the overall result looks "sepia".

Again, remember that I'm no color expert, and I don't remember what this looked like theatrically.

I look forward to the next 40 minutes :D

Found a subtle color inconsistency which is on the raw blu-ray as well, but I thought I'd post it anyway.

Look at the blue on R2:

Is it like this in the HDTV version too?

This second pic looks like the SE attempts at recoloring R2 (making him overly blue). The first pic is how R2 actually looks; they probably just missed that shot.

I've only been able to watch about a third of the workprint so far.

I'm no color expert, and the colors look pretty good to me. Maybe just a bit "flat" though, if that makes any sense - almost a little monochromatic. Could be my laptop monitor though. Plus, I've really only seen mostly desert scenes at this point in the workprint.

One thing I did notice is that when the Star Destroyer flies overhead, right at the moment of the huge blue flare in the SE, the starfield to the right of the Star Destroyer seems to warp a little.

The Lapti Nek Appreciation Thread
Time

Lapti Nek is a bit hokey, and the puppet Sy Snootles is not very believable. It's one of ROTJ's weaker moments.

But I appreciate that Lapti Nek is not Jedi Rocks. The new CGI in the sequence does not fit the rest of the movie. The song is over the top and goes on too long. And the killer combo of shaking uvula and flying spit is the biggest reason that the SE of ROTJ is absolutely forbidden in my house.
