Much as I love the Imperial March, loved Giacchino’s new Imperial theme as a supplement.

Rise of Skywalker is the only truly egregious score for me, while I love some of the new pieces for it (like when Kylo is on Mustafar and goes to Exegol), the OT greatest hits felt more than out of place.

I agree. In fact Giacchino’s Imperial theme reminds me of a militarized version of Williams’s motif for the Empire in ANH.

Rise of Skywalker is a mixed bag for me. The newer pieces are great as always but the revisiting of old themes feels a bit arbitrary in some moments. I wonder if I could try tweaking with the score during the victory celebration at the end.

I don’t mind the revisiting of old themes as much, I just wish they had been used for whole scenes instead of just moments. I mean, the ROTJ victory celebration was basically just two alternating melodies and it was hecka memorable - I’m not as inclined to remember that time they played 8 bars of the Force theme, then 8 bars of Yoda’s Theme, then 8 bars of Rey’s theme, then 8 bars of Luke and Leia’s theme, then 8 bars of the Rise of Skywalker. Although given the pacing for the movie itself, that’s probably more a result of the direction than of Williams.

Yeah but that comes out of nowhere and isn’t a fitting conclusion to what began in The Force Awakens. She needed to grow past the shallow need to fit in and have a father figure, and become a whole person. Instead it’s just regression.

Yeah, it might have made more sense to me if instead of having the scene with the old lady at the end, they just prominently listed her as “Rey Skywalker” in the credits.

I’ve been thinking, when Finn and Jannah deactivate the tower on the Finalizer, Poe immediately says “nav signal’s down, but not for long” which indicates that they know the “nav-signal” is going to come back soon, and he would only be able to know that if the same were true for the tower on the ground - which was their initial plan. This makes sense, because if they were able to stop the ships from deploying for good, then why would they need Lando & Company to help? It seems like the plan was always to delay the takeoff long enough for help to come and destroy the ships.
So… is there a way to make that clear in the movie itself?

I just had kind of a crazy idea:
What if we use the audio from that deleted scene of Finn confronting Phasma and had him say it earlier - like, when he’s about to be executed? Then the stormtrooper turns around and decapitates Phasma (this wouldn’t need to be shown in too much detail, since the scene is intercut with a lot of other stuff. Maybe just add an animation of the lightning-axe-thing swinging over one of the shots of Phasma turning her head). Then, remove the fight and have Finn and Rose go straight to the shuttle - but while this is happening, repurpose some of the shots from later of stormtroopers running away to make it look like they’re escaping too.
And this is the tricky part - change the conversation between Finn and Jannah in TROS to make it so that she was the executioner.
You could even take it a step further and reinstate the deleted scene of Finn convincing a Stormtrooper to let him go, but edit a black “executioner” stripe onto his helmet, and dub him with a female voice to that it’s also Jannah.

Why can’t she be a Skywalker? I agree that it’s a bit of ham-fisted, predictable writing, and a somewhat odd choice for Rey the character considering her closer relationship to members of the Organa-Solo branch of the family, but given Terrio’s hangup with ‘dynasties’ I can see why they went with her being adopted into Luke’s family specifically, and it doesn’t strike me as being massively implausible or anything.

Not to mention, it makes “Skywalker” the last spoken word of the saga.

One thing that’s always bugged me about the movie, but that I haven’t seen many edits address, is the sequence just before the heroes leave for Pasaana. The music tries to make it feel like it’s one long, emotional scene, when it’s really a series of smaller scenes that don’t quite blend together imo. But I don’t know what to do about this.

  • I tried just cutting right from “we go together” to Threepio saying goodbye to Artoo, but then it looks like Threepio is still looking at Rey while he says it.
  • I tried cutting the “we go together” scene entirely, but then we lose the only mention of Pasaana.
  • I tried rescoring the whole sequence with something more upbeat, but I can’t separate the music from Threepio’s goodbye - and I can’t cut that, because that makes it look like Rey teleported.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Hey, so, I remembered a few months ago when some people were discussing the idea of having Ben give Rey his life force before she faces Palpatine instead of after, so that it feels like they’re fighting together. The big problem with this is that it looks like they’re in a different setting because of the debris around them and the fact that Palpatine doesn’t notice what’s happening. So I was thinking, what if Palpatine threw them both into that pit, and Ben healed Rey allowing her to climb out?

Before realizing that Roundhead Rian wanted to destroy star wars, as I was watching TLJ, I always thought that big reveal was going to be that Luke abandoned Rey on Jakku, to hide/protect her. She was a padwan in his school so didn’t remember her parents (setup in TFA), Kylo was older than her, so he would remember her joining the school. When Kylo and Knights of Ren attacked the school to kill the padwans, Luke was able to gather a few children and escape, one being Rey. So when Rey was looking at the ship, she was sad that Luke left, who was basically her father (…or may her actual father…sounds like JJ Abrams hadn’t decided). But at that point, she could’ve been related to Luke, Obi-Wan, or even Leia still (since all she remembers was Luke at the school, having been adopted by the school very young). Of course, Roundhead Rian destroyed all that.

These movies were popcorn movies; nothing complicated about them. JJ Abrams had it setup to explain why Rey could use the force…

Abrams deliberately had it set up so that any twist could theoretically work. Not matching your headcanon doesn’t make something bad.

Has anyone thought about making Rey a padawan “abandoned” by her master? I’m asking that since I was thinking of a way that she could battle Kylo without the justification of her “downloading” Kylo’s training into her mind during the interrogation scene in TFA

The story I was imagining for her with the footage we already have would somewhat go like this:

-Rey is born in Jakku, as the daughter of two selfish jerks
-Her parents then sell Rey to a young woman, a Jedi
-The woman then proceeded to train Rey at a very young age (Rey’s parents on the other hand, already died)
-Years later, Rey’s master learns that Rey was targeted by the Sith and hids her on Jakku (We repurpose footage of Rey’s mother to depict this, while also cutting Rey’s father entirely)
-Rey is left behind by the woman and, blinded by the dark side, kills her master with the use of force lighting
-The traumatic experience is blocked from Rey’s mind and she probably misremembers her master as her true mother

All of this would be implied across the trilogy, with the plot twist in Episode IX being that Rey killed the only person that really cared for her until she met Finn and BB-8

Also, this would erase the feeling that Kylo’s lines in TLJ about Rey’s parents are being retconned in ROS (they would be actually expanded and fleshed out) and would give a better excuse about how Rey can fight (and win) against an experimented force user

Fascinating… I could see that working really well as a twist. The audience had always been made to assume the shot of Rey yelling at a spaceship to “come back” was referring to her parents… but if we found out it wasn’t (assuming you cut the line where Rey explicitly says “my parents were on that ship”) then it would be quite interesting.

I just don’t understand how they’re gonna edit the trilogy to make Kylo an active antagonist at the end. Or is the goal to smooth out the transition from being Snoake’s errand boy to Palpatine’s without ever desiring autonomy?

Personally, I’m not trying to make Kylo an active antagonist, I just don’t want it to feel like his TLJ development is immediately undone. I think if Snoke destroyed the helmet and Kylo reforged it before he found Palpatine, then the symbolism would kind of get reversed - the mask would represent his independence instead of his dependence, and so having him wear it for the first half of TROS might make his character arc seem… smoother, I guess.

Help Wanted: Preserving trailer shots not in the movies
Time

Every movie inevitably has shots, even whole scenes, get cut from it despite being shown in the trailers. However, aside from Rogue One, I haven’t seen anybody try to assemble a series of unused shots from a particular movie into one place. That’s why I’m creating this thread.

If anyone wants to post unused shots they found, compare & contrast alternate takes, or restore extended scenes using trailer footage, this is the place (unless a thread like this already exists, in which case please tell me so I can move there).

To kick things off, here’s a compilation of everything I’ve managed to assemble from Rise of Skywalker trailers : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK69xv_ZYCA

Oh nice, I didn’t know you were collaborating with other members of these forums. I really liked your Kylo’s scar heal edit, will you be making your shots available for other editors to use in their own edits, like Hal’s TROS Ascendent?

Kylo’s scar heal edit? I must have missed that. Does anyone have a link to it?

I just had an idea: what if we found a way to make it look like Snoke was the one who smashed Kylo Ren’s helmet? He insults the helmet multiple times so it seems like something he would do, and then it would make Kylo reforging his helmet seem like he’s growing rather than regressing.
Maybe, we could even move the scene of him reforging his helmet up to the end of The Last Jedi, as an epilogue/cliffhanger.
