Sequel Trilogy Rescoring Ideas Thread

Lately I’ve been experimenting with putting Holst’s “Mars - The Bringer of War” in TROS’ finale; it’s not technically a Star Wars piece, but it had a lot of influence on A New Hope’s soundtrack, so using it here might make it feel like it’s come full circle.
Here it is as Rey is standing up to Palpatine:

Look no further than the fact that Palpatine’s original plan in the script was to get Rey and Ben together in order to drain their dyad (which would have been significantly better imo)

I’m gonna have to disagree. If draining Rey and Ben was Palpatine’s plan all along, then that would undermine all the decisions they made up to that point. It’s still a problem in the final movie - if Rey and Ben hadn’t gone to Exegol, Palpatine wouldn’t have gotten the power to electrocute the civilian fleet and the sith would still lose - but at least he discovers the dyad by accident. If he wanted them together from the beginning, that would mean all of the inspirational moments they’ve had (Kylo being redeemed, Luke lifting the X-Wing, Rey and Ben deciding to stand together) were exactly what Palpatine wanted, and that makes the whole movie worse in my opinion.

This is an image from when Palp has red lightning. Question is, should the Saber reflection be purple, and should the force ghosts still be blue or would the redness of their sky drown out the colour?

I would say the reflection should be a mix of red and purple. As for the ghosts, I guess that depends on how you think the light works on Force Ghosts… I would say they should be grayish because that’s what a translucent blue object would probably look like under a red sky, but the Force Ghosts in the original seem to be light sources of their own, so they should be blue, but that might look unnatural… so maybe a pale blue?

Here’s the haircut by jonh for those who missed it:

Hello! These are the shots in which it has been possible for me to change Luke’s hair, there are other shots in which it is impossible: a thousand generations … it is impossible, for me at least.
I have also lost two kilos of weight to Luke

How was this even accomplished!? Secrets only the Sith knew?

Well, whenever you notice something like that, a secrets-only-the-sith-knew did it.

jonh was working on a couple fixes to the haircut scene last we heard, and then I’ll pass it to skenera to hopefully de-blue it if jonh hasn’t already.

And here’s the opening: https://vimeo.com/506231329

Oh I thought this was going to include the Battlefront 2 troop landing and such, is that version available somewhere?

Or even just the troop landing on its own in 60fps?

We’d have to interpolate it ourselves - the video it’s from is a cinematic trailer, rather than actual gameplay, so it’s only 30fps.

I wonder what’s gonna happen to Moff Gideon in captivity. It seems like part of his “master plan” was for one of the heroes to kill him, and we wasn’t prepared to get captured. I assume a Disney show wouldn’t feature a character repeatedly attempting to commit suicide in prison, but I can’t really imagine him doing anything else now that he’s played his part in the Empire’s plan, so to speak.

Someone had mentioned attempting to change the color of Pasaana so it’s not just another desert, was that ever mocked up? Is it too ambitious to color grade all that sand to a different color?

I can’t imagine a way of recoloring the sand that wouldn’t also change the color of the characters’ skin. Maybe the color of the sky could be changed, though.

If I could make it work, the idea is to have Anakin’s lines try and gently provide some of those answers. I want it to feel less like a scolding and more the fulfillment of something Ben’s been trying to get since TFA. Anakin’s still family, and it would still be a emotional moment for Ben, IMO, to see his grandfather after years of reaching out.

I was thinking the scene could go something like this:

Ben senses a presence and turns to it. Anakin’s ghost appears.

Ben: “Grandfather”

Anakin: “Ben.”

Ben: “Ben is dead.”

Anakin: “No. Kylo Ren is dead. Ben Solo lives. That’s why I’m here. (Gentle pause) Ben, she will need your help.”

“It’s too late. She’s gone.”

“It’s never too late Ben. You and Rey can bring balance to the Force. Finish what I started.”

Pregnant pause, Ben looks at Anakin.

“I know what I must do.”

Ben throws away Ren’s lightsaber, turns back and Anakin is gone.

As the camera pulls away for the wide shot, Anakin says:
“May the Force be with you.”

I like it. I would keep in Ben’s “I know what I have to do but I don’t know if I have the strength to do it.” and then have Anakin say “You do. We all do.”

Thanks! Recently I have been thinking about the first act, and how one could lay it out to delay Palpatine’s reveal.

Even though it isn’t as dramatic of a start, I thought it would be interesting if the film started off with Kylo on the bridge of the Star Destroyer, and as he staring into the abyss, he hears a whisper of mechanical breathing. It cuts to him in his chambers, unsealing Vader’s mask and placing his hand on it. He gets a brief vision of Mustafar, Vader’s castle, the chest that contains the Sith wayfinder, and maybe a brief glimpse of Vader/Anakin himself. He also hears the voices of Vader, and maybe Snoke, to better set up Palpatine’s line about being the voices in his head. Palpatine, through the mask, is leading him to the Wayfinder. It ends on a haunting echo of Vader saying “Join me…” which transitions into Rey’s meditation scene, with her chanting, “Be with me.”

Rey speaks with Leia, then goes to train, which is where we then get the Mustafar Minute intercut with Rey’s training. We see that through their bond, Kylo’s rage is fueling Rey’s. She eventually breaks the remote, Kylo picks up the Wayfinder, and then they share a vision of Exegol, the fleet, the battle, and we get a glimpse of Dark Rey.

Rey snaps out of it, and we get the scene where Rey tells Leia she’s just distracted. Then, we finally get to Kylo flying towards Exegol and meeting Palpatine. After that, we get Finn and Poe’s mission, and the film continues as normal.

I might play around with this eventually but I’m not sure if it would work.

I like it, especially the idea of having the Mustafar minute intercut with Rey’s training - it would still be fast-paced, but I think it would feel more natural since the two scenes have similar locations and emotions.

That has been talked about. It’s an extremely time consuming process which will need frame by frame editing. I’ve love to have Rey in black to represent her in morning for Luke & Leia and actually have her outfit significantly change for once but I’m still working on the crackling Saber plus Palpatines red lightning which is taking forever. If someone else has the skills to do this well I’d be happy to help but can’t take on anymore scenes atm.

That’s understandable, I wasn’t really asking anyone to do it for me - I was just wondering if whoever made the mockup had some kind of software or HSB preset that would make it easier if I were to give it a try.

Besides making me not have to watch Luke try to get with his sister I think it would improve Luke’s character a little bit in ANH because he wouldn’t try to rescue Leia because he likes her, which is what Han does, but because it’s the right thing to do.

I agree, although I would probably leave in the “Princess and a guy like me?” “No.” exchange, because it could also be interpreted as Luke being protective of her given Han’s creepy vibes.

The original crawl has an ABA structure and Across the Stars would work for the B section, but it would need something more energetic for the A and C sections.

JEDIT: This would have been a perfect place for a “Republic” theme which could have morphed into the Imperial March theme throughout ROTS.

Anakin’s theme, if you changed the rhythm slightly, might work. Maybe even use the variation heard in “Panaka and the Queen’s Protectors” which has the same opening phrase but with the Imperial March ending removed.
