Silent reader here. Been casually picking up ideas and effects from here for my own sage re-edit, but this community ended up contributing so much, especially for TROS, I decided a thank you at least was in order.
By the way, I am making a Rey is Anakin’s reincarnation/chosen one-edit, if anyone’s interested. Not exactly the way most of you seem to be going, but it was my fan theory before seeing the movie, so I went for it.

In fact, it was my theory right up to the point Kylo said “You’re his granddaughter”. That threw me off completely, haha. I mean, the dark side pulling on her, her always fighting out of anger, the natural force aptitude, Palpie wanting her, damn, even her looking at the Vader helmet in that one scene, it was all set up so well, no?
(Not to mention that due to Kylo being such a Vader fanboy, of course he would be all over his gorgeous female reincarnation. The perfect woman for him. 😄 )

I assume (nay, HOPE) that means you would cut their kiss?

I like it, especially how you masked Kylo into the Mustafar fight instead of just playing a flashback. One thing that kind of bugged me about the Rise of Skywalker’s force visions is that they don’t include the character experiencing them the way the Force Awakens’ force vision did.
Although I can’t help but wonder: if you replaced the first flashback with this, what would the other two be?

On the subject of Mustafar, I realized recently that the famous shot of Kylo Ren extending his lightsaber (from the first TFA teaser trailer) didn’t actually appear in the movie. Plus, it doesn’t show his surroundings very much so I was thinking that some color correction could be used to make it look like he’s arriving to fight the Mustafarians.

More options for the final shot!

Falcon Shot - Option A
Falcon Shot - Option B
Falcon Shot - Option C
Falcon Shot - Option D
pw: fanedit

Option A = original comp with the newer model, now with an adjusted path to smooth it, and sped up the light speed jump.

Option B = snooker’s 2nd pass, now more integrated by adding motion blur, heat distortion, and making the engine glow more blue.

Option C = a recreation of snooker’s original pass, which had the Falcon slowing and making a wider turn to jump. It’s not exactly the same, I made a few small adjustments.

Option D = craziness.

A, without a doubt.

I cannot wait to see this along with Ben’s ghost and the repurposed chess scene. It’s gonna be beautiful.

I’m sorry, I don’t know what you mean by “repurposed chess scene.” Did I miss something?

I just had an idea for a somewhat-major change that could be made to the ending.

One thing that bugs me about this movie’s finale is that the two battles happening (the one in the sky, and the one with Palpatine) don’t really line up in terms of tension. When Palpatine drains Ben and Rey, it seems like our heroes are at their lowest point, and this is reinforced by the cut back to Poe seeing his friend Wexley die. Then Lando & co. arrive, and the music switches to the main Star Wars theme, to indicate that we’re back on the light side of things, but then we cut back to Palpatine, who “kills” Ben and electrocutes the entire fleet, leaving Rey, seemingly alone, to hear the voices of Jedi past and gain the strength to face Palpatine.

Basically, the movie tries to give us two cathartic, portals-esque moments, the first of which is kind of invalidated by the second. The way I see it, the night should be darkest just before the dawn.
So what if the not-navy arrived AFTER Palpatine started zapping?

Picture this: Palpatine drains Rey and Ben. Above, Wexley dies. How can this get any worse? Palpatine “kills” Ben and starts electrocuting the rest of the rebels. Rey sees this from below and sheds a single tear. Poe delivers his line about how he “thought we had a shot,” just as the Tantive IV, the very ship that appeared in the opening shot of SW77 as a symbol of the underdog rebellion, is destroyed. So is it the end? **** no, because that’s when Rey starts hearing the voices of all the Jedi that came before her. When she stands up and ignites her lightsaber, prompting Palpatine to stop zapping, a random voice over Poe’s radio says something along the lines of “The sky is clear, now is the time!” That’s when Poe looks up to see Lando, along with thousands of resistance sympathizers, having come to the help. Things proceed as normal from there, possibly with the addition of Jonh’s ghosts.

Most of this would just require color correction, as well as one or two additional lines of dialogue. The only trouble I’m running into is that a lot of the shots of ships falling include ships that came with Lando, so I would have to either remove those shots or find a way to remove those ships in particular from them.

Whaddya think?

That reminds me - idir_hh, didn’t one of your edits have Palpatine saying “I’m weak, I don’t have long”?
Maybe we could use that to make Anakin’s turn to the light seem more important again.

Kylo could say “my grandfather killed you” and Palpatine could say something like “And soon his action will be complete” to communicate that Palpatine Palpatine IS dying as a result of Anakin saving Luke, it’s just that he didn’t die immediately like we had all thought.

That might work. I recently watched an edit that moves Palpatine’s reveal to the end of act 1, and while the cutaway kind of helps the “Scavenger Hunt” plot feel less hectic, it makes seeing Palpatine less shocking because you’ve had more time to settle into the rest of the story.
I’ve experimented with putting Palpatine’s message into the Last Jedi while saving his visual reveal for tRoS, but the only spot I can find is after the credits. I would hate for tLJ to spend 80% of its runtime being so bleak, and just when you think it’s going to end on a positive note, it turns out the big bad has returned from the dead with a promise of revenge. That feels cruel.

I wouldn’t say that makes it bad. Palpatine has always had some pretty convoluted, seemingly counter-intuitive plans. The way I see it, he’s constantly setting it up so that the people he’s manipulating can choose any one of a dozen possible options and still end up giving Palps what he wants. In Return of the Jedi, he tells Luke to strike him down in anger, but just a few minutes later he tells Luke to kill Vader and take his father’s place. If the former happens, the Sith gets a new vessel, and if the latter happens, Darth Sidious gets a new, stronger apprentice. Palpatine wins either way - so at any given moment, he’s goading Luke towards whichever path is closer.

The same is presumably true for Kylo and Rey. Having one kill the other will push whoever survives towards the Dark Side, while also ensuring that the stronger of the two is the one who gets to become the host.

I don’t like how they sold her to protect her, it’s honesty much better if they just sold her fro the drinking money, maybe palpatines son was discarded and disgraced by everyone because he is the son of the emperor, he turns into a drunk and sells her, kylo Ren can say that in the scene on the ship by getting his line from the last Jedi “I didn’t lie to you, your parents sold you for drinking money”. Works in every aspect and it even makes his lines towards the end of the movie better, and I cheesy “my parents were strong” it would be more effective that everyone in her family was a bad person

Or, maybe Rey’s father was discarded and disgraced by Palpatine himself. That’s pretty much what happened in Canon anyway (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Rey’s_father#cite_note-TROS_EE-0 second paragraph) but having Rey’s father turn out a bad person as well would indicate a vicious cycle of abuse to mirror the vicious cycle of Sith succession. In fact… that would probably be enough to justify waiting until the third movie to tell her about it.
Have Kylo say something like “Your father threw you away like trash, as did his father… Emperor Palpatine.”

Well, this next thing is going to look like S*** by comparison, but I made a proof-of-concept for one of my first ideas on this site: instead of removing Rey Palpatine from tRoS, adding it to tLJ.

VERY rough cut, though. I used a lot of dialogue from the audiobook.

In the PT Obi-Wan and R2 fight together during many battles but when he sees R2 again in ANH, he clearly has never seen him before when he says “I don’t recall ever owning a droid”. So after 17-20 years he doesn’t recognize his own copilot? What are we supposed to think? That Obi-wan went senile?

I thought it was another “certain point of view” thing, since Anakin says in Attack of the Clones that possession is forbidden for a Jedi, so the reason Obi-Wan doesn’t remember owning a droid is because he never technically owned anything.

Yeah, in the ROTS(?) DVD commentary, Lucas makes a point of saying all the movies end with a purely musical scene, and this is true of 1-7 (the broom boy scene has the action figures bit and the alien shouting which arguably disqualifies it, but it’s in a similar spirit also).

In terms of script, I think the fact that the broom boy walks outside signifies a scene change, meaning that movie’s final scene is technically without dialogue as well.

I think his source is the JWfanpage but from what I understood the chants in the duel trailer were collected from the original soundtrack and then mixed with trailer music.

No one on there said that. They’re smart enough to know what is from Williams and what isn’t, and that trailer music is clearly too “epic” to be from Williams. I don’t think the guy in that video knows what he’s talking about, he’s just whining about something he clearly has little experience in.

EDIT: And the rest of the video doesn’t make any sense either. He praises music that is clearly tracked as being from Williams, and the condemns music that is clearly from Williams as being tracked. His definition of themes is completely arbitrary, and only exists so he can make this great score seem like the worst thing ever.

For example, he condemns the movie for putting the Star Wars theme in places where it doesn’t refer to Luke, and for putting the Imperial March in places where it doesn’t refer to Anakin, as if those themes are supposed to be for Luke and Anakin instead of Star Wars and the Empire. There’s a reason they’re not called “Luke’s Theme” or “Anakin’s March”.

Well I wouldn’t go that far (the main Star Wars theme was written to represent Luke specifically) but yeah, it’s far from unprecedented for Williams to use themes incidentally (to fit the emotion of the scene, rather than the specific subject matter). Luke’s theme and the rebel fanfare are each used a few times throughout the prequels to represent heroics in general, and Duel of the Fates didn’t have much of a connection in the Phantom Menace beyond “conflict.” Plus, a few of the themes written for TLJ were specifically tied to emotions, rather than characters.

Would a thread about collecting and sharing every edit that removes music from a scene (so that fan edits seeking to alter the music have easier access and don’t always have to replace the SFX themselves) belong here or in the fan-edits category?

Until recently I’d never noticed that when Luke enters the Falcon cockpit after his rescue and says “It’s Vader”, Lando goes past and touches him on the arm like “You all right buddy?” and Luke nods briefly to confirm it. Now that I’ve seen it I like it very much, I don’t think there are many of these interactions in the movies.

Had a comment but removed it because it wasn’t about the original trilogy.

Info: Recreating/Preserving SW Movie Audio Without Music
Time

The first thing I want to say here is - I LOVE John Williams. The majesty of his soundtracks are one of the only things upon which the entire Star Wars fandom seems to agree, and the music has always been a prominent part of each film’s emotional journey.

But because of this, a lot of fan editors, including myself, have run into an issue in which making even a minor change to a scene will completely throw off the timing of the music. In addition, broader edits which reduce the screen time of certain characters or locations sometimes result in certain musical motifs seemingly going to waste.

But if we were able to alter a film’s music without removing any of the overlying sound, then we could edit the movie and the score independently and not have to make such compromises.

This has already been done to many scenes - some having had their SFX tracks be partially released on the “Star Wars Soundboard” flash game, and others having been reconstructed from scratch by fans for one reason or another.

I’m creating this thread so that all of these edits can hopefully be found in one place, starting with everything I’ve found so far:

If you’re creating a fan edit and you decide make a “no music” version of a scene, please consider posting it here so that other fan editors won’t have to make their own if they ever decide to do the same.

Also, I spent a while looking and couldn’t find one, but if there’s already a thread like this please tell me and I’ll move there.

That’s REALLY good! I know you’re probably getting an annoying number of questions and/or suggestions already, but didn’t one of the pervious versions use a different close-up for Obi-Wan as well? I didn’t recognize that shot, and it almost looked like his face had been altered slightly with CGI. Unless I’m experiencing the Mandella effect and it was always the ESB shot it is here, can you tell me what shot you were using as a reference?

This is on a different topic, but I just had an idea for a change that could be made to the Leia’s Lightsaber reveal to better explain why she gave it up, as well as justifying making the lightsaber purple (which many edits, including mine, are planning to do in honor of Carrie Fisher).
Instead of “she had a vision, she sensed her son’s death at the end of her Jedi path,” it could be something like
“She sensed her destiny as a Jedi was to bring peace, and that in her hands, this blade would only bring darkness. She surrendered her saber to me and told me that one day, it would be picked up by someone who could use their inner darkness for good.” It would obviously have to be modified a great deal in order to be viable with audio splicing and whatnot, but I’d like to try something in that vein.
That might do a better job of tying in the color (because Mace Windu’s lightsaber color also had to do with him using the dark side without being corrupted by it) with the reason Luke decided to give it to Rey (because they just had a whole conversation about Rey being afraid of herself and her past) and with the fan theories that Leia was actually a higher risk of turning evil than Luke was, since she had experienced so much suffering.
