I’m second guessing the added Ach-To establishing shot. When I watch it it feels tacked on with the same musical sting. Plus the new shot has a lot of birds that don’t show up afterward.

The birds I didn’t mind. The new position of the sun implies to me Rey and Luke have been speaking for some time, so the birds could have left.

Maybe the musicial sting itself in the second shot could be removed/replaced?

That’s definitely a possibility. I haven’t counted, but I’m pretty sure if you go looking for John Williams music swells to put over an establishing shot, you’ll find literally thousands of options.

Isn’t the next scene Anakin and Obi-wan talking to her about how they’ve been assigned to protect her? You might be able to just cut the Palpatine meeting and let it be.

The real value of the Palpatine scene imo is that it’s basically the only mention of Dooku until Geonosis, but he’s underutilized in this movie (and its sequel) anyway.

That works, I suppose.

Here’s what I’ve got so far:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pREsyomXeYU&feature=youtu.be

“He’s Alive, Rey:”

 • He means nothing to me”
 • “I sense she’s west”
 • “The girl I’ve heard so much about”
 • “The pull to the light”
 • “I will tear that information from their mind”
 • “He gave the order”
 • “You can’t hide, Rey.

That’s pretty good. May I ask what’s the context of line?
Maybe we can play around with different ways to convey the message.

I’m not completely sure yet. I knew it would need to include the word “alive” at some point, so I started there and put it in the place where “you are a Palpatine” was originally. I’ve kind of run into a problem because Kylo originally built up to the reveal with the smaller reveal that the Sith were chasing after young Rey, prompting her to ask why. In this version, Rey would have to ask something like “what are they hiding on Exegol” or “who’s leading the Sith Eternal” and I can’t think of anything Kylo could say that would make her ask that.

Does anyone know of a recording of Kylo Ren saying the word “Alive”? I’m trying to make a mockup of my previous idea (Kylo doesn’t reveal Palpatine’s alive until he meets Rey in the hangar) and I can’t find any instance of him saying that word. Even if it’s just the audiobook narrator’s impression of him, I could really use it.

Here’s how it would be with just the TIEs shot.

I think this looks the most believable while adding a few more seconds to the movie, anything to somewhat slow down the fast pacing even by a few seconds is a W

It also makes it so that this isn’t the only Star Wars movie that teleports from space straight to the surface. There needs to at least be some visual continuity.

Actually, the Last Jedi does it too. That’s one of the reasons I wished they had left in the Alternate Opening, where Finn waking up in the dome is the first shot.

Oh really? I must have forgotten or totally missed that you did that.

I have mentioned this before but it would be nice to make Leia a little more talkative.

For example, when Rey tells Leia she is going to look for the wayfinder and Leia says no, you could have Leia start saying why she disagrees, then have Rey interrupt her. So something like, “No, we need-“. The way it is now, Leia just says no, then stands there silently without giving Rey an explanation. I think it would just help make it feel like a real conversation rather than a mad lib experiment.

Or, more simply, Leia could say “No, it’s too dangerous.”

Unusual Sequel Trilogy Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

I think a lot of Rey’s interactions in the Rise of Skywalker (Specifically, the two times she thinks about telling Leia about her vision, but decides against it) would have a lot more weight if she already knew she was a Palpatine. Plus, it would give new meaning to the part where Luke tells her that Leia knew all along and still decided to train her. So, against almost all logic, I’m thinking about making an edit of TLJ to better set this up.
Basically, I’d need to make two major changes in dialogue:

 • Add at least one line about how there were rumors of Palpatine having a biological heir. Ideally, Luke would explain in his flashback that most people thought Snoke was the heir, but that Luke believed Snoke was just someone in the right place at the right time.
 • In the throne room, Kylo reveals that the “heir” was actually Rey’s father. Then, in trying to persuade Rey to join him, he posits that the resistance would kill her if they found out who she truly was.

Then, in the Rise of Skywalker:

 • Cut all references to Palpatine being alive, until Rey meets with Kylo in the hangar. That’s when Kylo reveals Palpatine is back. Because it’s a slow scene and he’s wearing a mask, there’d be a lot more room for him to explain it in a way that makes sense than in the earlier resistance briefing scene.

How does that sound?

Lucas was right to not dive into that topic or give such precise measurements of time.

I dunno, I think since repulsorlifts (the engines which allow speeders, spaceships, and pretty much EVERYTING that floats in this universe) canonically work using “sub-nuclear knots in space-time” I can suspend disbelief on the idea that they’ve somehow found ways to get around the law of relativity as well.

it would not be better to put it before the shot of the Falcon and the suns?

I thought about that, but I figured it would be too jarring to cut right from the shot of her walking away to a shot of her already in the cockpit.

Since a lot of edits are repurposing the chess scene to put it at the end, has anyone thought about repurposing the shot of Rey, Finn, Poe, Threepio, and Chewie in the cockpit of the falcon from earlier in the movie as well? It’s got that “family portrait in space” vibe that the original trilogy’s ending shots all had.

There are a few other Battlefront cinematics with shots that could also work.

https://youtu.be/yz15PFcbmN0?t=21 - A shaky stormtrooper close-up. Doesn’t tell us much, but it might help make the rest of the scene’s hectic pace seem more intentional.

https://youtu.be/mlCH4uBBOzE?t=19 - An alternate shot of a First Order transport landing for battle. This one isn’t as fast-paced, but it might fit better with the rest of the scene visually since it doesn’t show the sky.

 • Palpatine got the idea for Darth Vader’s mask design from studying cave paintings on Nelvaan.
 • Unlike in the EU, the original Sith Species is still very much alive, and Ochi is one of them (as are most of the cultists in TROS).
 • Once Palpatine died, the weather on Exegol cleared up, meaning the Star Destroyers could have easily taken off with or without the navigation tower. The only reason they didn’t is because the stormtroopers mutinied.
 • Because of the destruction of Alderaan, Leia was incredibly paranoid about putting too many resources on any one planet. That’s why the Republic capital rotated between planets, that’s why the Resistance base was off-world before there was any imminent threat, and that’s why the Resistance’s allies were “scattered in the Outer Rim” in TLJ.
 • Solana was Rey’s mother’s name.
 • The second death star was just a shell. All it had on the inside was the superlaser and about one Star Destroyer’s worth of hangars and corridors. The rest was to be empty space to make the structure look as big as possible.
 • Immediately after the events of Revenge of the Sith, a clone of Luke was made, and given to one of Padme’s sisters to be raised as her own. This clone, who believed himself to be Luke’s cousin, was named Mark Hamill, and he is the one who appeared alongside Luke in episode 417 of the Muppet Show.
 • Every diegetic song in the saga was written by Oma Tres.
 • If Han and Luke hadn’t rescued Leia, Vader would have stopped the execution himself and taken Leia as his apprentice.
