Star Wars GOUT in HD using super resolution algorithm (* unfinished project *)
Time

Thanks for the compliments! I'm no expert on Laserdisc transfers, I think Laserdisc Master, Althor1138, Anctufaalb or a number of other experts could probably shed some light on the subject. I'm just glad that the information about the high resolution frames is still hidden in the low resolution frames. As one of the members noted a while ago, it's precisely the large amount of aliasing that probably makes it work so well.

I will do some more tests with respect to the AR. Although the R2D2 frames suggest they need to be stretched vertically, some of the frames with C3PO seem to suggest it needs to be stretched horizontally when compared to Harmy's DE.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)

I love the work you've done. It's a historic undertaking. The samples you've posted look great, and I can't wait to see the final product in full glory.

However, I must say I'm not such a big fan of this subdividing the member base of this forum into one elitist group that can see the preview, and others who can't. For a while I was thinking how can I get into the group that get's to see the preview? How can I get on Team Negative1's good side? Then I thought this is ridiculous. I don't want to have to meet all kinds of demands to watch a preview. I'm passionate about Star Wars, just like any member on this forum. If that's not good enough, that's fine. I will wait for the final release.

Here are the two frames mentioned compared to Harmy's DE. It is true that the antialiasing affects the detail negatively in places, but I think it is relatively minor compared to the detail corrected by the antialiasing.

Here are a few more 1080p screenshots without dehaloing:

I think I found a setting that affects most of the haloing, but leaves ~99% of the detail intact. Here are a few 720p screenshots:

Here the comparison to the scaled 35 mm frame, with all the post-processing, but without degraining.

The AR is still a matter for debate. The current AR closely matches the AR used by Team Blu, aside from some cropping (probably due to stabilization).

Here are some work in progress screenshots. These are the raw SR outputs at 720p, so no degraining, dehaloing etc.

The next version of the SR script will have significantly less aliasing, while preserving most of the detail. I'm also experimenting with some stabilization, but that's still in a test phase. It will be a little while before I can post a sample. The first step now is to do the antialiasing for the whole film, which sadly takes ~12 days, with 9 days to go. Then this result will be combined with SR, degrained, dehaloed, possibly stabilized, and finally upscaled to 1080p.

Thanks to the community for the feedback!

Ps. Sorry for the late reply. The weather here has been marvelous, so I went sailing...

Update:

I'm working on some further improvements. There are some conflicts with some of the Avisynth plugins, but that will hopefully be resolved.
