At this point I'm planning to use the NTSC versions for all three films, but if ROTJ really looks better with SR, I'll reconsider. 

I'm planning to make it bluray compatible, and if there's a demand for it, I will also create a DVD-9. 

The rendering takes a little longer, but all good things come to those who wait... :-P

The recovery time explanation seems more like a way to plug the holes in the plot, to treat the symptoms rather than the disease. 

Although the video explains a lot. :-P

The video sample is about 70% done, so almost. I think and hope it's worth the wait ;-).

I remember this shot also looked pretty dodgy on VHS back in 1986, so I think it probably didn't look all that great in theatres back in 1983 either, kind of like the scene of Vader getting off the shuttle on Endor. It's sort of interesting that ROTJ contains some of the best effects work in the OT, but also some of the worst.   

Having finally seen TESB Despecialized 2.0, I must say I'm very much looking forward to ROTJ Desp. 2.0. You've done an amazing job on the latest iterations of SW and TESB. I personally feel there's still some life in the GOUT, being the last official release and all, but your restorations, and the 35 mm preservations are certainly high on my wish list.

How about the fact that at the start of TPM it is established that Jedi have super speed, when they escape from the Destroyer droids, but Obi-Wan seems to have lost this ability when his master's life is on the line. This is a clear example of sloppy writing. Ring theory is not going to fix these continuity errors or any of the many other problems with the prequel trilogy. I just don't understand these type of arguments, where something bad is portrayed as a special type of good. 

Those scans certainly look awesome. I've been catching up on this thread, and I've been reading great things, aside from poita's illness. Hope that's going well.  

You're planning to do a full blown restoration? Should be a very interesting comparison with -1, not that it should be a competition. 

Those scans look really good. You're 35 mm reels seem to be in great shape. Are they all looking that good? Looking forward to seeing more of this...

I've been optimizing some of the filter settings. The video sample should be online by this weekend. Hope you will like it...

Since there is little to gain in tems of detail, I use edge directed interpolation to upscale to 1080p. If you use edge directed interpolation the aliasing is generally reduced.

How does the quality of the reels you're planning to use for the final version compare to the Grindhouse? I think the Grindhouse is surprisingly detailed, despite the obvious shifts in color. Also, are there going to be significant quality differences between the preservations of the three films?

Oke, I've decided that the final product will be 1080p. The upscaling to 1920x816 further reduces aliasing somewhat, and has slightly better quality. The next video sample will also be 1080p.

I think those last samples say it all. They scream Star Wars! The bluray is like a woman who once was beautiful, but now looks horrible thanks to too much plastic surgery and botox.

Yes, I suppose that might be a good solution that would please everyone. ;-)

The actual video being upscaled is 712x274. The SR algorithm upscales the video exactly two times to 1424x548. At this point I downscale the video the 1280x544 with Spline64, but I might upscale to 1920x816 for the final version.

I applied very light sharpening to counter the blurring of edges by the antialiasing, and of course the color correction.

I will be posting the script, once the trilogy is finished. :-)

No, the way I implemented the solution doesn't affect the detail. I substract a simple upscale with the same color conversions as the SRV10, and then add the simple upscale without the color conversions. This should by definition restore the color, without affecting anything else.
