Hopefully this proves listening to the fans never ends well.
Hopefully this proves listening to the fans never ends well.
Luke’s shame is much greater when he failed not just his nephew, but his sister who entrusted him to look after Ben.
Wait…am I the only one who interpreted the Leia/Ben scene as Leia “inhabiting” Ben’s spirit to try to turn him, which distracts him so Rey can stab him, which ends up killing Leia?
As in…Rey, in a moment of Dark Side weakness, is the one who killed Leia?
I thought that was extremely powerful and the perfect motivation for Rey to try and pull an Obi-Wan/Yoda/Luke and go to Ach-To to give up and die. And it seemed explicitly foreshadowed by her thinking she accidentally killed Cheque earlier in the movie.
That’s interesting, I did not get that at all. But I suppose it’s as reasonable an explanation for what they were trying to do as anything.
Nev, aren’t you using lines from Lego Star Wars in your edit? Did you just pull from what’s available on Youtube?
Still that fiery spit of hope. You have the spirit of a true SW fan editor!
And for that… you must suffer.
Ha! What is fanediting if not suffering.
But, I can think of few more qualified than you to take something like this on.
Very kind of you to say. I hope when the time comes I can find a way to live up to the challenge!
And because I’m an exceedingly weird guy, here’s this thought: TROS used the same font in the crawl for the title as TFA, which was distinct from the one used for TLJ and most of the others. If, and I’d say only if, ‘Rey Palpatine’ is undone, change it to that other font.
I noticed that right away. Truth be told though… because I’m an extremely weird guy too, all my Star Wars fan edits have that font as well, not the ROTJ/PT/TLJ font.
I’ll say I will 100% be doing an edit of this. But I’ll for sure need some community help with a lot of things.
I feel like there needs to be some expansion of the Leia/Ben moment. As is, it just feels comically abrupt and confusing. I figure what makes most sense would be additional lines for Leia. Even just adding something as simple as “Come home” would add something.
Leia’s “Ben” which distracts him could easily be delivered from beyond the grave. That would probably make more sense than her lying down and force skyping it to him so hard that she dies, anyway. Even Mace Windu, who never learned how to be a force ghost and has been dead about 50 years, managed to communicate through the force to Rey.
The question is, is a bad explanation for her death better or worse than no explanation?
Maybe putting something like “The ailing General Leia Organa” would help set it up, either way.
I also feel like Kylo needs to expound a bit on the fact that he thinks he “can’t go back.” As is it’s just one line tossed in there, pretty close to when Leia contacts him. If it’s established earlier that he thinks his mom has given up on him, it’d be much more powerful for him to be contacted by her.
IIRC, The camera isn’t even shaking during the TIE Fighter attack in Star Wars. The shot was locked down due to the way the gunner shots were set up. They’re moving the frame around in post to simulate the camera shaking, aren’t they?
Well yes, that and some of the shots in the cockpit the camera is shaking.
“Shaky cam” is basically what happens when people who don’t have the vocabulary for an established film technique create a term, and that term gets popularized through common usage. “Shaky Cam” was what people who didn’t previously know what handheld photography was called came up with to describe what they were watching. The internet made that sort of adoption of terminology a lot faster than it used to be. Sometimes that speed basically renders words and terms more or less meaningless. Sort of like how “Reboot” essentially replaced “Remake” and is now used almost interchangeably with “sequel.” Or, in the world of videogames, how the term “cinematics” became “cut-scenes” despite the fact “cut-scenes” basically doesn’t make any sense as a term.
Apparently shaky cam as a phrase now means literally any camera movement whatsoever, whether handheld or not. Once again I feel like the liberal used of the word ‘sandwich’ is a good analogy.
But at what cost!?
As one who loved TLJ and the risks it took, I would say the cost was caving into fan service over originality. I really liked a lot about TROS but an extension of what Rian started would have been a lot better imo.
Just rewatched TLJ and have to agree, it is pure magic and imo easily the greatest Star Wars.
That’s saying something…seriously. I rank TLJ number three (or four depending on what day you ask)
I rank it at the bottom. For me it fundamentally clashes with the story and characters Lucas envisioned. I really don’t like the meta approach to Star Wars, even if I don’t think it is a bad film when viewed in isolation.
It definitely clashes and is one of the things I do like about it.
We all have our own experiences, our own conceptions of the series, what it means and what it is. I don’t find it to clash at all - it feels perfectly Star Wars to me which is why I love it so much. A true continuation of the saga.
TROS… not so much. TROS feels a bit more like the PT to me - interesting ideas, poor execution. Ultimately extraneous.
There’s a very clear difference between ‘simulating shaking environment by shaking the camera’ and ‘shaky cam.’ The latter is entirely stylistic and need not be tied to the ‘shakiness’ of the environment. For example, when the camera shakes during the tie fighter attack, that is not ‘shaky cam’ style footage, it’s supposed to be the Falcon shaking. In my mind that’s like calling a hot dog a sandwich.
Eh, all these potential character attributes for Rey that everyone is pining for are truly interchangeable if you don’t let strong expectations get in the way. Some people just want a Star Wars movie to show off some cool/mildly violent scifi fantasy tropes (ala Rogue One) with a certain level of thoughtfulness and detail. Deleted scenes on Mustafar and Exegol would have to be reinserted and in order to bring me to view this and any part of the trilogy again.
Some people think the best part of Star Wars are the characters and themes.
I fully expected Rey and everyone to be related before TFA, and even after I still to some degree suspected it. And I wouldn’t have cared that much. But when TLJ established a much more interesting and powerful story, to undercut that is both stupid and pointless. That’s where I’m coming from.
Imagine being Adam Driver, knowing that back in your trailer you have the scripts to “Marriage Story” and “The Report” just sitting there, waiting to be memorized and performed, and that’s the day you have to do a scene where “You’re a Palpatine” has to come out of your mouth.
Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but Kylo Ren’s last words are “Ow.”
I think you’re correct. Driver does such a fantastic job here too (as usual). I love the little bits of the Solo influence seeping through in his performance - the pointing, the shrugging. It’s great.
Watching the film the first time was really just despairing to the whole fan editing endeavor. But I’m holding on to some hope now that I think it might actually be possible to remove Rey Palpatine. It’s not going to fix the whole film, but at least it’ll make it less offensive. I’m less confident about fixing the ending but we’ll see.
As someone who thinks TLJ is the best of this Trilogy (Yes , we exist), I have a minimalist edit in mind.
I think you’ll come to realize there’s a lot more of us than you think. In time, I think most everyone will understand.
The only thing I would change for TROS would be to remove Rey being Palpatine’s daughter. It didn’t bring anything to the movie and it would make her taking the Skywalker name an even more powerful moment.
It should be relatively easy. You just remove the instances where it’s mentioned. Rey’s parents were killed because Palpy sensed her immense power (Which came from the Force itself)and tried to find her for his next vessel.
The fact that she’s afraid that she could become a very powerful dark side user can still work. The Force lightning scene could also be kept. That’s my idea after a first viewing. What do you think?
We’ve been discussing this very thing. The trick is how to accomplish it. But you’re absolutely right, on a basic level it doesn’t change much about the film.
Then why was her father a nobody? Did the power levels just skip a generation?
I just wish fans could accept the Force awakened and things are different now. I feel like the new movies tried to bring back the Force as this mysterious power beyond total understanding, and Abrams ironically fell back on midichlorians. “Rey has Palpatine’s high midichlorian count! It’s gotta be at least 20,000 if not more!”
I appreciate your willingness to discuss this Shopping Maul! Don’t get me wrong, I did have fun with the movie still, these are just some of my issues with it. So I’m not criticizing you or your enjoyment, just the story decisions of the movie.
It infuriates me. Fans can feel however they want. But when it affects the movies? That’s the really annoying shit.
Yep, and to appease the Mary Sue people.
Exactly.
SW for me was always more than just simple popcorn movies. The fact that that’s what we ended up with is kinda sad (especially because you can see hints of something more in TROS, that are ultimately squandered).
I just think having Rey’s power being tied to a male bloodline feels so lazy and totally defeats her purpose in my eyes. And regardless if you feel she needs to be related to someone, I think cramming all that information into the last movie was a mistake. If they wanted her to be Rey Palpatine, they should’ve told Rian that’s the direction they want to go in. But once his movie was out and she wasn’t, Abrams should’ve continued painting that picture rather than trying paint over what was already on the canvas.
I fully believe that she was a nobody when they made TFA, and JJ only made her a Palptine for the sake of TROS.
Probably worth mentioning that Dasiy Ridley and John Boyega voiced their characters in Battlefront II as well.
I don’t disagree even a little bit but it’s a decent analysis of the film’s prospects.
This is definitely a movie you have to turn your brain off to enjoy, that’s for sure.
I just think you fundamentally have a different definition of the term. If you asked me I would say there’s only a couple shots that are “shaky,” and they’re in the cell block hallway.
Yes I think so let’s get the basics right so we’re on the same page. Are you happy to accept the Wikipedia definition?
I am, but I don’t think you’re understanding what they’re saying.
(I should probably clarify that a couple shots in the tie fighter attack they do shake the camera, but that’s only to simulate the falcon shaking, but shaky cam).
Honestly, shaky cam on its own is not the problem. It is that it’s over-used and combined with other filming techniques that consistently move the camera unnecessarily. Like the shot that Finn takes of his helmet. To me it looks awful. If the camera was pulled back and steady it would look fine.
The camera does not shake in that shot. I’m losing my mind. There is a difference between a non-static camera in shaky cam.
This seems to be a good rundown

Turns out an image of Empress Rey is in one of the flashes. Not sure the best way to expand a flash, but that’s a start.
Making a Rey Random edit of this film will for sure be its fan edit holy grail - much like saving the reveal in the prequels - is it even possible? Who knows but many will try, because Rey Palpatine is hot garbage. It’s not symmetrical, it’s redundant.
Yeah, they all voice their characters (even Harrison!).
Yeah that all makes sense to me. I honestly have no idea how you tease Palpatine to be honest, besides maybe just adding his music haha.
