General Star Wars Random Thoughts Thread
Time

For the last few weeks I've been flying through the Wire, so all the characters and plots and such are constantly swirling around my mind. Tonight (right now actually), however, I'm watching Hal's EpI workprint, and a guard says "the boy's here to see Padme," and I do a double take. That's Jimmy McNulty's voice! I looked it up, sure enough, Dominic West was an extra in TPM! That's so wizard!

Only fans of the Wire will get this, but the only thing I can think when I hear see him there, and hear him say that line, is Man, Rawls assigned him to be a guard? What the heck did Jimmy do this time?

Emanswfan's Prequel Trilogy (Ep II Opening Clips Now Available)

I would argue that Luke and Leia being revealed as siblings in ROTS is much better, dramatically speaking, than having the reveal be in ROTJ, for a couple reasons.

1. What is a better reveal, Obi Wan plainly saying "you have a sister," and then Luke correctly guessing Leia; or Luke being born, and then all of a sudden, twins! Luke has a sibling?!? Padme names is Leia! Luke and Leia are siblings! It just seems more exciting to learn it this way.

2. It would be a nice payoff for the machete ordering, connecting ROTS and ROTJ further and making the whole flashback worth while, as you get new information about the characters you started with.

But here's where the problem is: Anakin's fall to the dark side. The movie had Padme dieing childbirth plot which is stupid. And then Palpatine manipulating Anakin, makes Anakin like some complete idiot who's just his pawn. He even doesn't freaking kill him when Palpatine reveals he is a sith! I'm honest to say, I still have no clue how to get Anakin to be seduced by the dark side, not out of paranoia and manipulation. I want the audience to understand Anakin, but not be with him. I want the audience to feel sad for Anakin for falling away, not mad at him. (that's how Obi-wan felt). If I keep the secret in a certain way, I can just leave his fall to be more of a mystery. I'm sure there are ways, I'm just lost here.

Check out L8twrtr's Dawn of the Empire. He rearranges scenes and makes the fall much more believable in my opinion.

Machete most certainly. It's the most logical way to watch the movies and no ones edited it for that yet. Also, no offense, but the "keeping the secret" thing is one of the stupidest ideas ever for thousands of ways that I've gotten into too many times elsewhere.

So definitely go with machete. And why not have the mirroring as well? I've always loved the mirrors that Lucas put in, and I'd love to see a restructuring based on that concept.

Seriously, this sounds like just about the coolest PT edits.

Here's my newest clip from AotC!
Hope you guys enjoy it!

I like it very much!

Couple things (that you're probably already working on):

- I'm assuming you're going to do some color correction?

- Not sure if I like how the music works when Anakin gets his arm chopped off. It's just that act of violence is so sudden and that music just pops in like "yes this is dramatic!" I think I'd probably go with a different cue (something more subtle) or drop the music from that part entirely.

How often do you actually watch an entire Star Wars movie?

I try to watch at least ANH every year, but even that rarely happens. Most of my viewing is of as of yet unseen films/tv shows (mostly just movies).

However, whenever, and I mean whenever, a SW film is on TV, I'm watching it.

Is Spike still running them into the ground? My cable company has been shuffling channels around, and it seems to have been dropped by them.

Ha, yeah. That's actually the only channel that plays them so it evens out.

What actor/actress would you like to see in new Star Wars Movies?
Time

I posted this in the Episode VII thread but I thought it'd make more sense to post it here:

I'd say for sure Joseph Gordon Levitt as the late twentysomething male, Charles Dance as the seventysomething male, Idris Elba as the fortysomething male, and Michael Fassbender as the thirtysomething. The younger ones I have ideas for, but probably better if they cast someone I've not yet seen.

By the way, I find it interesting that most of the actors that you guys want in the new movies are people way past their prime. And I just wonder if the original cast that's to be be present won't fill that quota and then some.

Callback to TRM?

Pad: Something's happened...I'm pregant.
Ani: Is it my baby?
Pad: *speechless*
Ani: It's not my baby, is it?
Pad: *speechless*
Nute: Now there are two of them!
Ani: It's not fair!

Probably better to save "Now there are two of them" for when they realize it's twins at the end, with ghost Nute delivering the line of course.

That's possible. Maybe a running gag where she tells everyone she meets that she's pregnant and they all think they're the father.

Absolutely.

I feel like there's a lot that could be done with this. What if Anakin has a dream about an episode of the Maury show (or something like that) where it's revealed that Obi Wan is the father and that's why they fight?

What single (Non-SW) movie from the last 30 odd years has come closest to the spirit of Star Wars?... and why?
Time

Hey, it's me. said:

I maybe wrong, but wasnt the Hobbit more a children's story than LOTR? LOTR dealt with more 'adult' issues such as power, corruption and greed albeit in a fantasy setting. Star Wars was unique because you loved it as a kid in a very one dimensional kind of way, and grew to understand the deeper tones of it as you got older. I don't know many (if any) 5-10 year olds that fell in love with LOTR the first time they saw it.

I was in that age range when I first saw LOTR, when it first came out. And I fell very deeply in love with it, a love that was second only to my love of the OT.

And I was not the only one. I had a fair share of friends my age who fell in love with the LOTR films when they came out. Probably not the same amount as when SW came out, in terms of the age range; but that's more due to the films' violence and PG-13 rating which made some parents a little less likely to let their kids see them; rather than because the movies didn't share the same magical quality as the OT.

Trust me, LOTR is my generation's Star Wars.

The heir to the original SW I believe is the LOTR trilogy most certainly.

I've heard many similar quotes saying "LOTR is this generations Star Wars".

Since I'm a little older than that bracket and didn't 'grow up' with the LOTR films I can't comment if this is true really (I suspect it is).

I grew up with the LOTR films. The statement is true.

The first thing that came to mind was the Indiana Jones trilogy. Really the best answer in my opinion.

The heir to the original SW I believe is the LOTR trilogy most certainly.

I'll also back up that POTC (lots of props to Ryan for using that Arrested Development pic) and the Harry Potter movies had something of a Star Wars vibe.

The JJ Star Trek films are definitely Star Warsy, and I love it.

Star Wars prequels were mapped out in 1981, only nothing like the way they turned out
Time

If I could just put in my two cents on the midichlorian subject, I would say the concept of strength in the force being determined biological is far from stupid, makes sense, and does have similar precedent in other non-SW sci-fi works.

However, it really makes no sense in the context of the OT. Along with what everyone's been saying (it's a fantasy), it's clear that the force is something that could be learned by anyone, even if it's something that must be taught (jedi training). Besides Han and Motti's remarks, we must also remember non-jedis telling other non-jedis "May the force be with you," something that wouldn't make sense in a world with midichlorians, in which the force can only be with jedis.

Also, it annoys me that the moniker "jedi knight" has practically zero meaning in the prequels. It should be: those that know the ways of the force are jedis. Those who use it to keep the peace are jedi knights. The super powerful force user teachers are the jedi masters. This is what's implied in the OT and should have been in the PT.
