Episode II has the best story of the prequels. Discuss.

Honestly the plots of all three of these movies are relatively straightforward. It’s the execution that muddles them. I kind of differ from a lot of people here in that I think 99% of the problems with the prequels are execution problems, not conceptual ones.

Well Anakin being an annoying jerk instead of good person was a conceptual problem. And him being an annoying jerk is pretty much the only real problem of PT as far as I am concerned. Of course bad acting and bad dialogue concerning his character amplified things, but in the end it was a conceptual problem to begin with.

Lucas’s concept was not to make him an annoying jerk however. He wanted Anakin to be hotheaded, reckless, and a little power hungry - all of which makes sense for the character. He just executed it in such a (poor) way that Anakin came across as an annoying jerk.

I agree for the most part that the concepts worked, but ultimately the execution fails the concepts as a lot of the most interesting stuff is barely touched upon and the structure and characterization is all wrong.

I almost agree. In its current form I actually think AOTC is probably the worst of the bunch, but the story is pretty solid, perhaps more so than the other two.

The only issue is the assassination itself. If Padme is fighting for peace in the Senate and opposing the creation of a Republic army, why would the Separatists want her dead? The film offers the explanation that Gunray wants he dead out of revenge, which is pretty weak. The other interpretation is that Dooku and Palpatine want her dead because they need the clones to kill the Jedi. But if this is the case, shouldn’t the Jedi catch on? Shouldn’t they be suspicious about the assassination and the clone order?

I’d advise against the walk and talk as it explicitly states that Padme was elected Queen at 14 which is absurd. Removing that line doesn’t necessarily remove that plot point but the less it’s discussed, the better.

The thing that’s good about the dinner scene as you mentioned is Padme is already showing signs that she has feelings for Anakin which makes their hook up later more believable. As well it provides a nice parallel with the dinner scene at the Lars residence.

It’s really not though. I don’t understand why Lucas catches shit for stuffing the thing with unnecessary effects tweaks but when Adywan does it he’s a genius.

This probably isn’t the place to debate (and it’s a debate that’s been had many times before), but Lucas “catches shit” because he suppressed the original versions. This site pretty much exists because of that. If he just made the special edition in addition to the theatricals, no one here would care. As is, we have every right to be angry that the official versions have CGI bullshit.

And that’s not to mention the fact that most of Ady’s changes are simply fixing continuity errors and effects gaffes while Lucas added truly idiotic stuff like a poorly animated dinosaur covering the ENTIRE frame for a solid second or two. So yes, Ady’s version is MUCH better and it’s a preferable alternative to the SE, though obviously something like Harmy’s would be the ideal.

Up to the director?

Up to the director or not doesn’t really matter. The studio or producers can do whatever they want with a film as long as they don’t suppress the original version. Same goes for the director. Lucas had no right to suppress Star Wars even though he directed it.

Yes. The point is not whether they should get an approval by some hired actor director. The real point is that the original versions should not be suppressed by anyone.

Yes but calling them hired actor directors is reductive. They did more than that.

What 'a Star Wars Story' / anthology / spinoff film would you like to see?
Time

I’m pretty excited for Rogue One too, and the Han Solo picture, but the sooner they can step away from prequels, the better. The fact that they have a whole universe to play with means they shouldn’t be focusing on small events that tie directly into previous films. But I like to think they know this too, which just means that Rogue One will be killer enough to justify the somewhat redundant story. At the very least it is certainly shaping up to be very different tonally from the main films, which is good.

What I DO NOT want to see is a Yoda film, as has been rumored here and there. What I do want to see, and we surely will get, is a Boba Fett film. Forget his bloated fanbase. He’s an interesting and mysterious character who was shown briefly in Empire (and, of course, subsequently lost all of his potential for coolness in his other appearances) - the perfect subject for a spin-off, especially considering the possibilities of a “Man with No Name” type film in space. Let’s hope it’s done right.

Films set during the OT would be nice. I know it’s a prequels and people hate it, but it would be interesting to see Coruscant under Imperial rule. It is sort of odd that we don’t see the Imperial capital at all in the OT. Would be a cool location for a GCW film (if they keep the politics out of it or at least to a minimum).

Sounds pretty good in terms of matching with JEJ (though there is a noticeable shift in volume at :54). The scream itself is not great (sounds a little like gagging - though I suppose he would actually make some weird noises with his new physical condition) but it is better than “Noooooooo” so maybe it is worth the change.

Also, have you done something with the color there? Seems like there’s some added contrast and maybe a bit of blueish tint? Anyway it looks fantastic, especially the shots of Obi-wan.

I think there’s an old thread for this, at least I remember posting already posting my thoughts on what spin-off I would like: a The Searchers style western starring McGregor’s Kenobi and Edgerton’s Owen lightsabering and punching Tusken Raiders to death, respectively.

Also a Ric Olie movie starring Ralph Brown and directed by Tommy Wiseau would be a real treasure.

Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD**

Criticizing Poe Dameron's "whoooo!" is one of the silliest things I've read. Why, because he's not a "cowboy" character? How do you know that, out of context? Don't you think that including that clip is the trailer's way of telling us that he is a "cowboy" character?

Oscar Isaac can certainly pull it off. His inevitably great performance is one of the many things I'm looking forward to.

I wish I could see this on 2D 15/70. There's actually a couple within range of me but neither is playing TFA in that format. I'll probably still make the trip to IMAX but it's a shame it'll be digital. I guess Interstellar was the last film I'll ever see projected 15/70.
