Info Wanted: Are there VHS Transfers to DVD of the Original Trilogy here?
Time

So I was talking with my friend about watching the OT and he had this silly idea of watching it on VHS. I laughed him off, but then I realized that the version of Star Wars I fell in love with (and the only version I knew for a good 7 years before the DVDs came out) was the fullscreen, pan and scan Faces VHS set. So, with my desire for Star Wars nostalgia in full force this month, I thought, why the hell not watch the OT on VHS, that’d be a real trip.

Thing is, though I still own my original VHS copies, every time I’ve tried to play a tape recently my VCRs have eaten them up. If that were to happen to my OT tapes, I’d be eternally depressed. So I thought, I bet ot.com has VHS transfers!

Well are there any? I’ve been looking through the forums and I can’t seem to find anything. If anyone knows of some, I’d really appreciate some info! Thanks bunches.

Where/How will you see TFA?

If it’s good, I’m going to try to get to the IMAX in Reading to check out that new Laser projection thing. If any of the 70mm prints make it to New England I’ll seek that out as well.

No way, I’m considering going there too. I’ll be seeing it in 2D first but second time around will likely be IMAX 3D, so either Reading to check out the laser or Providence because the screen is bigger (and I’m secretly hoping it’ll be 70mm there and they just haven’t told anyone yet).

Hate to be that guy but extracting isn’t working for me. I’ve tried archive utility (Mac) and unrarx, but I’m getting error messages on both. Am I using the wrong program? Why aren’t the files rars?

I’m not sure why that’d happen. What errors are you getting? Make sure none of the files are missing, too.

Oh wow. Just drafted a whole PM with the errors I’m getting and what I’m doing, then I realized that for whatever reason JDownloader only downloaded about half the files needed. Oops! Thanks anyway.

Doesn’t matter;the final score is 2-4, with another three bases loaded. We have lost.

What if we’re at bat though? The ST could be the best thing to happen to Star Wars in 35 years. If they’re good will you change your sig to 5 out of 9?

Somehow, I doubt it. Even if the sequels are great you’ll find something to dislike.

Episode II has the best story of the prequels. Discuss.

Yeah I should probably calm down lol. I just can’t see how this movie can be more compelling than ROTS. It’s the one where Anakin becomes Darth Vader! It’s what we’ve always wanted to see!

Exactly. So if you think Lucas failed to properly portray this, then ROTS is an even bigger disappointment than the other two prequels.

I know it’s pointless to argue with frevious, but the films were better for more reasons than just Kurtz. Empire’s extraordinary is in large part because of Kershner. Kurtz should be thanked more for letting him do what he wanted.

On Jedi, Lucas wanted more control and that was what he was going to get. Kurtz left because of that, amongst other reasons. There were other producers who could have kept Lucas in check as Kurtz did but that’s not what Lucas wanted so that’s not what he got.

Lucas certainly has a resentment towards Empire but I’m not sure it’s jealousy as much as it is lingering frustration from shooting over time and budget. Lucas has been quoted as saying the film was better than it needed to be, or should have been. He would have been happier with a worse film if only because it would have caused him less stress.

Ewoks are a pretty good representation of the “little guy,” in a number of ways. I don’t mind the idea behind them, but I do wish the film did a better job proving they could actually take on “an entire legion of [the Emperor’s] best troops,” or at least showed that they got some help from the better trained alliance troops.

Somehow, I still like these conversations. Though it seems like they’ve been hashed out ad nauseaum, every once in a while you’ll realize something new. Like, I’ve known for awhile that the recruitment of the Ewoks harkens back to the first draft of Star Wars with the Wookiee army. But what I didn’t think of until now is that, in that early draft, the Wookiees are trained to fight and defend themselves using the more advanced Rebel technology ala Seven Samurai. Where was that in ROTJ? Could have been another way to make their victory more believable.

How will you be watching the saga in preparation for Force Awakens?
Time

ImperialFighter said:

Like others here, I’ll be treating myself to a re-watch of the saga in some manner before ‘The Force Awakens’ opens. And I’m still finding it hard to get my head around the fact that in less than a month now, we’ll be getting to see a Star Wars movie which is a ‘continuation’ of the events seen in ‘Return Of The Jedi’…complete with the original main cast members, and all-new John Williams score! I mean, it just seems like the other day that I was completely shocked to hear that George had actually ‘sold off’ his creation to Disney…and now the first movie is just around the corner.

I feel the same way. It is impossible for me to comprehend. The original trilogy is something that has been with me for practically my whole life. Hard to believe that I’m now getting new adventures with my favorite characters in a galaxy far, far away.

I’ve been getting prepped for a long while now, which has included reading books and comics and watching a variety of different things (Clone Wars, special features, films that inspired SW, films SW inspired). I’ve actually seen all three of the originals twice each so far this year (once through with friends, the other with DVD commentary) and might watch them again multiple times before TFA. Just one marathon will not be enough. I will eventually post everything SW related that I consumed before TFA when I finally see it, but for now, here is my plan of action regarding the marathon I’ll do immediately before:

 1. The Phantom Menace (Blu-ray)
 2. Attack of the Clones (Blu-ray)
 3. Revenge of the Sith (Blu-ray)
 4. Star Wars (Despecialized)
 5. The Empire Strikes Back (Despecialized)
 6. Return of the Jedi (Despecialized)

As much as I believe the films should be watched in release order (or at least Machete/Rister order), I want to save the best for last, and of course there is a sense to doing it chronologically. Also, I’ve decided that, while I prefer fan edits, I want to see them all as the were theatrically (which, now that I’m thinking of it, I should probably get a Phantom Menace theatrical preservation). Unlike some I don’t feel the need to gauge my eyes out watching the theatrical PT and I actually have some nostalgia related to those films as well as the OT.

If I get the chance (unlikely), I might try to do a Machete/Rister viewing beforehand, which would be mostly fan edits (Ady’s IV, Harmy’s V, Hal’s I & II, L8’s III [or my own hybrid if I get off my ass in time], Spence’s VI).

What’s the Wizard of Oz joke in Jedi?

Many people seem to think the “eyeball” robot in Jabbas door is referencing the little fella in Oz’s door.
I think it’s just referencing the same thing Oz was- the ol’ eye looking out the slide-window in a speakeasy door.

I guess maybe the image is more familiar to American audiences than the rest of the planet, but I see no reference to Oz. it’s an old scenario.

Considering this is George Lucas we’re talking about, I think it’s much more likely that he would reference a popular fantasy flick from the 1930s than a historical institution from before then.

STAR WARS: REBELS (animated tv series) - a general discussion thread
Time

Rebels is far stronger in every way than Clone Wars, I think.

And no more kiddie. It’s fun and lighthearted at times with a youthful spirit but that doesn’t necessarily make it kiddie. The fact that kids can enjoy it too is not a bad thing. Honestly Clone Wars with its endless firefights and lightsaber battles is more kiddie in my mind because that’s just ADD fireworks catnip for young children. Rebels more often is interested in character and story.

This is exactly what I was talking about. People are really vocal about this stuff on social media, which is probably the best way to get their attention (rather than stuff like online petitions, no offense).

This is not the first time they’ve stirred the pot a bit and acknowledged SE controversy. There was an article a few months back about Star Wars debates. Han Shot First was number one. The list is pretty interesting and surprisingly accurate, even if the descriptions shy away from direct criticism: http://www.starwars.com/news/7-topics-star-wars-fans-love-to-debate

I think the general attitude toward the powers that control Star Wars has turned the tide from angry to optimistic, but if anything the outrage against the SE is even more widespread now. Think how well known Harmy’s Despecialized edits are. Whenever the Star Wars Facebook posts about rereleasing the movies half the comments are either “won’t buy if they aren’t originals” or “I’d rather watch Harmy’s.”
