ELSTREE 1976 A documentary about ten very different lives connected by having appeared onscreen wearing masks or helmets in Star Wars.
Time

It’s too bad. In my mind (and I hope this doesn’t come across as offensive) but the intense obsession of fanatics and the sight of washed-up or no-name actors sitting around signing autographs for money just seems inherently depressing to me. So I feel like these filmmakers should be reminding us how much happiness these people can get out of it.

One fandom doc that seemed to get it right was “Star Warriors.” That one did a great job of taking something that many (including myself) see as somewhat silly - the 501st - and showing how SW and costume making has actually brought a lot of people together in meaningful ways. It really focuses on the human element of these fans which I thought was very nice.

On the subject of this particular doc, it’s all from the perspective of the actors so a bit different. Based on what they all say it seems like SW was just one very small part of their life that’s just happened to have this long lasting effect. Rather than no-name actors trying to make a living off autographs (which is what I had assumed) it’s more like they’re just ordinary people who have by strange chance valuable autographs (which they happily take advantage of). Except the doc’s tone seems to favor the former impression.

Anyone actually see this?

Just watched it myself on Netflix. It’s a nice little doc. Nothing terribly interesting but I suppose still worth a look if you want to. It’s well done, despite being a big overdramatic. I remember going to a Comic-con a few years back and seeing some of these people and others and just thinking it all seemed rather sad that this is what their life has come to. I was happy to see that these guys find SW and the conventions are just one fun and strange aspect of their life. So it’s a little unfortunate that the film takes on the same dour tone of mine and many others assumptions rather than pushing for something more subversive and happier.

That there’s been a composer switch is a bit surprising but the replacement choice isn’t really.

What this tells us is we’ll probably be getting a very typical JW-sounding SW score. It was also a possibility with Desplat but there was the potential with him to go a different direction. I can’t really complain with this though.

I just hope they don’t use the Force theme (since it’d be out of place with these characters) but somehow I really doubt they won’t.

I’m also hoping the Imperial March is kept to a minimum and they use the original Imperial motif but that’s kind of pie in the sky. I do expect we might hear a new theme for the new villains though, which could be cool.

I miss the Iron Man music from Iron Man. I thought it was great, iconic music and it basically disappeared by IM2.

They should have established more motifs for each character and then used them combined for The Avengers films. Imagine how cool it would be to have Steve and Tony’s themes clashing in Civil War.

More things should be scored like Star Wars.

Yeah both the Iron Man and Cap themes from their respective films were pretty cool.

One thing that definitely doesn’t help (in addition to the general blandness) is complete inconsistency of composers. Three Iron Man movies, three different composers. Three Thor movies, three different composers. Two Avengers movies, you get it.

There has been some slight continuity. Silvestri did the first Cap and then Avengers (but then was dropped completely - although he’ll be back for Infinity War!) and Jackman did Winter Soldier and Civil War (coincidence or not but these might be the four best). Brian Tyler did some cross hero scoring but he’s also total shit.

Thankfully yes, we have Giacchino to look forward to but I wouldn’t expect him to single-handedly turn this ship around.

The charge comes from Adam Driver, so they aren’t “preempting” anything. The only way Rian could preempt the “inevitable ESB rip-off complaints” is that his movie would not be a ESB rip-off 😃

If you read the Driver quote that’s not what he’s saying at all.

(by the way, can’t Edgar Wright direct Episode 9 ?)

If only. Will have to hope for a spinoff.

Fucking hate high school when your schedule is full with AP’s. So much useless shit being shoved into your brain costing you useful time.

Why take APs if you have that attitude? Drop all of them. If you think that you’re wasting time getting college classes out of the way in high school then why bother?

Exactly. But what is it that makes them “useless”? Nearly half my schedule is AP and I think they’re pretty useful classes.

Even if they’re useful purely for college credit.

Which is pretty useful. I came into school with a semester’s worth of AP credits and now I’m graduating a semester early in January and saving thousands of dollars.

Damn Dom, I’m sorry.

Breakups are hard. Went through a massive one myself last year.

All I can say is keep moving forward because it will get better.

Breakups can leave just as much if not more of an negative impact as a bereavement.

When you enter a relationship you merge the threads of your individual lives into a single cloth. If that has to come to an end it’s better, where possible to carefully unpick the stitches.

All the cliches about being torn up, ripped to bits, falling to pieces, they don’t come from nowhere. It’s all real human stuff.

Thanks guys. This helped me more the other day than I thought it would. It’s rare that I’m a slave to my emotions but this has been tough.

The real pain of it is that we were a great pair. She didn’t break up with me because we were having arguments or we didn’t get along anymore or she became bored or found someone else or whatever it is that usually ends things. No, she was still very much into me. It’s just, it had become long distance (well it had been for awhile but had just recently become a distance at which it would be very hard to see each other) and was to remain long distance indefinitely, which was just scary for her and she couldn’t handle it. So I don’t know in some ways this has been harder to come to grips with.

I’m feeling a bit better now. I’ve decided that even though I might not be able to (or want to) get over it I can get used to it (and I’ll have to). The hard part is the despair. It’s just very hard to see a scenario in which we can get back together. I’ve always been an optimist so coming to terms with this fact is a real bitch. And I know I know there are more fish in the sea and blah blah and I know I’m a pretty young guy who doesn’t know much but I’ve never met a girl who’s made as much sense to me as her.

Thoughts are with your father Warb and with you Mike.

. . . the reinsertion of the droid factory sequence . . .

I’d kind of like to see this too, provided Threepio isn’t involved at all like in L8wrtr’s cut. The only thing that bugs me about this version (and I really mean the only thing) is the abruptness of the meeting with Dooku after Anakin and Padmé land on Geonosis.

Yeah that’s probably the biggest reason I’m doing my edit in the first place. And I’m 100% going the L8 approach.

If we’re being honest here ROTS is predictable by nature. Even if it were a good film it still wouldn’t change the fact that we already know how it’s going to end. The same thing applied to Rogue One

That is pretty irrelevant. I know what will happen at the end of OT and yet I enjoy it every time I watch it. Only shitty films rely on suspense and plot twists.

I agree but calling ROTS predictable is like calling Shaq tall. It’s pretty redundant. Also I’m not arguing that predictability is good or bad.

I wouldn’t say knowing how it ends makes it predictable. It’s not quite the same thing.
