The Force Awakens: Starlight (V1.1 Released!)
Time

The mind trick is one of the few things in the film that actually bothers me. I get the idea of it, but it feels like a step too far. I’ve thought about ways to make it seem like Rey simply unlocks the restraints with the force (possibly with voices or visions or something happening) but I’m really not sure if there’s any believable way to do it.

What I’ll say in respect to the topic is that bad movies can make a lot of money but they don’t have the same staying power as good movies. That’s why TFA grossed more than TPM even when adjusted for inflation.

So I’ll just point out that if you look at the F&F’s films’ box office record, there’s a clear trend there that closely relates to the uptick in quality in the films. If you choose to write off a specific kind of movie just because you think it’s beneath you, that’s your prerogative (I personally can enjoy any type of movie, so long as it’s well made).

But I do wish TFA still had that record…

F8 certainly doesn’t deserve the record but at least it’s a good movie.

Good ? Well, if you think so… TFOTF (aka FF8) is so dumb it gets unwatchable (the opening scene is fun though). Even Theron is a very terrible vilain (who wrote her endless stupid monologues ?). The rip off of Hard Boiled was quite confusing as well. Fast Five is way better and still is the best of the series. At least FF8 is not as arrogant as FF6.

I’m not saying it’s the best one. I don’t know how anyone in their right mind could call it unwatchable because if it’s anything it’s watchable. It’s dumb yes but very aware of that fact. Theron is pretty silly but she plays it up well (even if her character doesn’t really go anywhere).

Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got criticized for being ridiculously over the top, self-aware, and cartoonish at times.

Why do you think F&F gets away with it when other movies don’t?

Because those weren’t the reasons why KOTCS didn’t work?

I’m not going to argue with either of you about it if you haven’t seen it.

All I’ll say is that last four movies have embraced the absurd entirely and purposefully. They know exactly what kind of movies they’re trying to be - dumb, fun, funny action. There’s nothing inherently wrong with enjoying that kind of movie if it’s done well (and these past few F&Fs are). Sorry if your view on movies is so limited that you can’t enjoy a movie that doesn’t take itself seriously.

International opening because F&F is international bro. Really it’s all because of China - unlike TFA it opened there the same weekend as everywhere else (subtract that $190mil from China and TFA’s record would have been safe), and Vin Diesel is a mega star there whereas Star Wars isn’t that big a deal since they didn’t get the OT until years later.

The protagonist problem with TPM isn’t really just “it has too many main characters,” it’s more that none of them are truly fleshed out in the way a protagonist should. To that end I’d say Rogue One has a similar problem. There it’s clear that Jyn is the one you’re supposed to hang your hat on (whereas TPM doesn’t really have that), but she’s not fully formed in the way she should, which does get it closer to the TPM problem (though, don’t get me wrong, I’d say Jyn is much better than Jinn).

For similar reasons (that I’ve touched on elsewhere before) I think the Vader scene should be moved, as it’s placement in the theatrical is kind of a non sequitur.

That’s an interesting idea. I was just imagining how it would play back to back with Rey’s Dream (they both feature a helmet from a deceased warrior), but of course it wouldn’t work there. Were you thinking it should be closer to the final confrontation in order to bring his conflict to the fore?

Well in my mind hopefully the Falcon scene would do that. You can’t move the Vader scene too far back or it just slows things down too much.

The main issue is just that it’s placement as is doesn’t connect to what comes before or after (in this case Maz’s bar), so it’s a bit hard emotionally to feel the connection in Kylo’s psychology with the rest of his story (hope I’m explaining this right, logically it’s easy to make sense of the connection but in terms of the actual effect it’s lacking the way it’s sequenced).

I basically see three different possibilities -

  1. Right after Snoke’s “we shall see”, so we follow up Snoke’s skepticism with Kylo’s own, which enforces it
  2. Immediately before “the end of the Republic” - this probably doesn’t work Starkiller restructruring, but I love the shots of Kylo looking at the super laser and I think it’d add a layer if we know he’s just asked Vader to show him the power of the darkness and he has this in his mind while he’s watching (note: this is essentially what the film is trying to do but by putting all the Maz stuff in between the effect is gone almost completely)
  3. After Leia’s “you’re his father” - this is the latest I think the scene could go (and it’d probably require a bit of restructuring to get just right), but the idea here would be that we’re connecting more closely Kylo’s call to the light with Han and Leia trying to get him back

I haven’t seen how any of them look in practice so I can’t say which works the best, but they all seem like they could be good alternatives to the way it’s placed in the actual film.

Cool beans. Been trying to teach myself a lot more in AE recently and that looks like just the kind of thing I should try next.

As for the scene itself, I’d have to see it in context to know for sure, pacing wise, if it works, but I like the idea of it. I think it’s important to keep up Kylo’s temptation to the light in conjunction with the reunion with his father. I feel like this is a good place for a reminder and for things to ramp up. Honestly, if I were to implement the scene, I’d change the music when he’s in the cockpit to his more tragic theme (reference) and have him say “father” rather than “Han Solo” again.

For similar reasons (that I’ve touched on elsewhere before) I think the Vader scene should be moved, as it’s placement in the theatrical is kind of a non sequitur.

Didn’t someone here remove the timecode fairly seamlessly from that scene?

Yup.

Oh yeah, I remember that, though I wasn’t sure if he had ever finished (I guess so?).

What was really annoying is he wouldn’t tell anyone his method. I’m sure a lot of people would love to give it a shot (myself included) if they simply knew how.

I’ll be Possessed’s wingman posse anytime.

I believe possessed to be genuine so I don’t know that he needs a hit squad posse to help him out.

😉

Now that I think about it, I guess it’s obvious that he doesn’t need me. Possessed is his own posse(ssed).

I came in because you were taking a post I made and putting it in a context that made no sense. I don’t really care that much, I just can’t understand why you seem to.

Don’t be shy … you swing in like a bat out of hell every time, just own it. No one cares anyways.

😃

As usual, I don’t know why I bother.
