I’m pretty sure he said he wanted the originals actually.
I’m pretty sure he said he wanted the originals actually.
Well, I tend to like to keep an open mind. But yeah, if you’ve seen trailers for a film and it doesn’t look good, and if you know the previous work of the filmmakers isn’t good, and if critics or people you trust say it’s not good, then yeah it’s probably not good. Even then, you never know, I’ve seen movies that have surprised me. But still it’s usually probably better not to waste your time if the chances are high that it’s bad.
For the prequels, it really depends. There are a lot of people out there who love them (and critics didn’t universally hate them). So yeah it depends. You may hate them, you may not.
I think we all just need to stay calm, and trust in Cher.
The prequels definitely tried some interesting things (watch the History doc “The Legacy Revealed” if you haven’t) and there were a lot of really compelling ideas bubbling under the surface. Ultimately, though, sometimes what they were trying to do can’t overcome how they were doing it. Even if you have a good idea, if you can’t effectively tell it, then the idea might as well be moot. Remember the phrase “a good story, well told.” George Lucas is undoubtedly a visionary but ultimately his skills as a filmmaker were somewhat lacking.
I’ll lead with my most important advice to both coffee and rush: please don’t be ashamed to seek professional help. If you’re really feeling down on yourself, than talking to someone can really go a long way to stopping that. You two are both good guys and neither of you should have to go through this right now. Trust me that seeking help from someone who’s trained to do so will be the absolute best place to go for emotional support.
Now I’ll move on to my own dumb pieces of advice (my mom’s a therapist so I like to think some of it rubbed off on me but I know that’s bullshit).
To coffee: please understand there is nothing wrong with who you are. I’m truly sorry that you’re in a situation where you’re compelled to feel that way, but know it’s not right. If your parents love you, understand that they love you for who you are, even if they may not realize it. I’m sorry you don’t feel comfortable telling them about yourself right now, but the time will come when you’re ready. For now, don’t worry, be yourself. There is nothing wrong with liking a girl if you like boys too. You’re not lying to the girl or yourself. If you like a girl, you like a girl! Nothing wrong with that. If you like boys too, nothing wrong with that at all either. Perfectly normal. You must realize that if God created you and so many others like you, it must be okay. The fundamentalist extreme views on God don’t add up. You are who you are, and I know that can be scary right now, but don’t forget you’re still growing up. You’re still figuring out who you are. You have a long road ahead of you and have no reason to think any problems you face now will last forever. Things really do get better.
To rush: I’m sorry you’re feeling so down. But like coffee, understand that you have many years and experiences ahead of you. Right now, I get it, it’s tough. In high school it seems like you’re grown up and you should already start acting like it. But that’s not true, not really. You still have a lot of time. When I was in high school had a fair amount of female friends that I could have gone out with, but I could never bring myself to do it, just because I never really thought that we’d make great couples and I didn’t want to mess up any friendships. So this meant I spent most of high school without a girlfriend (while my male friends seemed to have a new one every few months), and at times I felt the same way you did. I was only ever in one relationship during high school, and then one after with a girl from my high school, and neither really worked out. The thing I realized though, was that I actually did do the right thing (well the right thing for me, anyway). Focusing on my friendships in high school rather than my relationships made my time there a lot more fulfilling, and most of those friendships are still alive and well now, years later. Because the truth is, in reality the dating pool at my school (and in my other circles at that age) was pretty small, so whether or not I was going to find someone right for me wasn’t guaranteed. When I went off to college, things were much different.
The important thing to remember is that there’s a whole wide world out there, filled with a lot of different people that you’ll meet. Whether it’s romantic partners or people with different views and perspectives on religion or sexuality or what have you, you’ll find there is a place and people for you out there. Your world and your life may seem big and important now, but realize it’s all just a stop along the way. So, in conclusion, things will get better, and seek professional help if things get worse (because you shouldn’t have to deal with that).
My opinion on you…
…used to be: I like you but you post waaaaay too much.
…now is: I like you but you post waaaaay too little.
So yes.
I had been thinking of the possibility of moving that scene there (mainly because of your sixth reason). It definitely only works if the Republic’s destruction is moved later so it an interesting thing to consider for this.
Your other reasons are pretty solid. I personally would be a bit worried about introducing Kylo’s conflict so late but it could work. One thing that you’d have to be careful about is Snoke’s dialogue - “the droid we seek” - considering with Rey in hand they are no longer seeking the droid.
Random aside but Snoke’s line, “The droid will soon be delivered to the Resistance, leading them to The Last Jedi,” has a wonderful added meta meaning in that it literally leads them to Episode VIII
he presumably signed something with Disney saying that Disney won’t un-do the Special Editions.
How could anyone know this?
But can Disney fix things that are objectively wrong like ANH’s crazy color issues or TPM and AotC’s DNR?
How could anyone know this?
How does your post advance the conversation in any way?
I think the problem is that this topic of “conversation” is just a purely hypothetical question based around nothing more than random speculation.
So I’d probably say no, it doesn’t advance the conversation in any way, insofar as it’s impossible to because there isn’t really a conversation to be had.
The 100 day standard isn’t very fair. Ambitious goals require time. For example, at the current rate, it doesn’t seem very likely that Trump will play more golf that Obama did in his entire 8-year term for another few months.
Gotta admire the effort though.
Please don’t waste your time with that shit.
AOTRSE suggestion:
Mace Windu: “You know, m’lady, that Duke Dooku was once a Jedi. He couldn’t assassinate anyone. It’s not in his character bio on Wookieepedia.”
I’m sure Disney will make a Jawa movie, and you’ll get to find out every last detail.
Christ, you really can spin anything into anti-Mouse venom.
And whose fault is that? Yep, Disney again.
at the risk of continuing this discussion, I can see the points of the mary sue argument. The only one that really bothers me is her knowing the falcon better than Han. That was ludicrous. But I can kinda let it go and assume she had just tinkered with it in its slightly modified form whereas han hadn’t had it since the guy on jakku messed with it.
I’ve been telling myself not to chime in here if I’m not going to say anything I haven’t said a million times already, but I guess this needs to be reiterated. Yes, she is familiar with its modified form in ways Han is not. This is made explicit in the film. She knows the history of who had the Falcon and what they did with it. The compressor that she bypassed was not something that was on the Falcon when it was in Han’s possession. So I don’t think we have to worry about Han not knowing about the Falcon enough (although let’s not forget the scene in ESB when 3PO tells him about the power coupling, which obviously he had been talking to the ship’s computer but Han’s reaction says it all - this guy’s knowledge of the Falcon is not infallible).
As to Wookiees being super rare, I had no idea that was the case. I can only go off what I’ve seen and in the PT it definitely didn’t seem that way. Maybe that’s an EU thing but I’m pretty sure they jettisoned the EU.
Don’t diss on him he was just trying to make sure we didn’t get into any trouble with the fuzz or corrupt any youngsters.

The “fuck off” was in regards to the persistently annoying fact that you can’t get two posts into an argument without being a pompous dick. You know Haseo and I don’t exactly see things the same 90% of the time, right? And yet we managed to civilly engage each other for a few posts. Seems like the problem is you, not me.
Either you were being more of a dick to me than Haseo or I just wasn’t prepared to put up with your shit. Too lazy to look back and see which, but believe it or not I do not tell everyone I disagree with to fuck off.

I wasn’t embarassed by anything because if I had been that would imply I was wrong and you were right. The fact that you think you know more about good filmmaking than any and everyone here would be funny if it weren’t so sad.I don’t know anything or everything and I never claimed I did. I’m not Rey, after all. 😉
Well if you don’t then it shouldn’t be hard to stop acting like it I guess.

The “fuck off” was in regards to the persistently annoying fact that you can’t get two posts into an argument without being a pompous dick. I have no problem having a reasonable debate with someone on this topic and I’ve done it many times before but it’s hard when you’re such an asshole about it.
Well you should probably learn the difference between character and characterization before you try and convince people that a bunch of random, convenient traits, were essential to understanding who Rey is.
Oh fuck off. You should try thinking a little harder. As I said there is nothing convenient about her understanding of multiple languages. What it does is show that Rey is someone who’s spent a lot of time learning about a lot of different things. But you can’t seem to understand that so I don’t know why I keep trying to explain.
I don’t know why I bothered.
Rey being able to understand droids and wookiees is not a plot convenience, in fact it barely even affects the plot. It’s character building. It doesn’t require an explanation (and one is not given in the film), really the opposite. It tells us about who she is.
^That I’d definitely have to see in practice, because it sounds like it’d be tough to pull off.
Yeah I feel like that’s the one I’m sort of leaning towards but it’s hard to know how well it’d work without actually seeing it.
I went ahead and made a rough version where his counsel with Vader is in between Han & Leia’s talk and Rey’s interrogation. Didn’t put the entirety of those two scenes in the video, just enough to get the gist. I also went ahead and put the two Maz scenes back together where the Kylo scene originally was just to see if the transition would work without it in between them. Like I said, it’s rough, but maybe it’ll help you guys decide if this direction is worth pursuing.
Somehow I missed this. I think it mostly works (providing the audio transitions are smoothed up). As much as I really love that Finalizer shot, I don’t think it really makes sense for Kylo to be there. I do kind of like the snow mountain shot in between though.
What she says to Finn later implies that the idea just sort of came to her (through the will of the force, I imagine). Kinda ambiguous though.
If Han can understand Chewie, I don’t know why Luke couldn’t understand R2, honestly.
God, China has trash taste in movies. F+F movies are the domain of idiot frat boys and rednecks.
Did you not read the last few posts or are you purposefully insulting my intelligence/humanity?
I’m not questioning your humanity, unless your alluding to being a sophisticated AI. I find those movies garbage. The people I know who love them tended to be the jerks who called me a fag me in high school.
By humanity I mean human decency. I’d rather not be lumped into that group.
Only the first 3 or 4 were race car gearhead bro movies. They might have retained that audience but the newer ones fit more comfortably in the superhero/action/spy genres.
And here we are getting off topic again but I do not appreciate the insult and feel the need to defend myself. Movies can have a wide audience. The box office wouldn’t be so high if it didn’t.
You think everyone who watches Star Wars movies lives in their parents basements?

I’m sure Disney accountants are wiping their tears with all the money Rogue One made. 😉
Yup.
To bring this conversation full circle, Vin Diesel himself showed up before my screening of F8 and talked about how the F&F franchise is the most successful of all time. Yeah, no…
