That’s one of my favorite lines in the film. The original edit implies there’s no time to waste so that’s not really an issue, but the real reason why it works for me is because that’d be the worst time to stop the film cold for a long and tortured explanation. The line’s basically saying “just go with it,” which you’d have to do no matter what, but this way it doesn’t waste your time.

Obi-Wan never hints that there’s any good in Vader, in the prequels or as a ghost. Padme does, up to the end.

That, if we pretend the PT never happened, it’d be one of the very few moments where we learn about Luke’s mother (and also natural, I think, that Vader would mention her to him now that Luke has “accepted the truth”).

Notes on that vid:

  • All of the audio in the Republic destruction sequence is lower than the surrounding scenes, the music especially.
  • I think the slowed down shots are a bit too obvious. What editor are you using? I know there are slow motion specific programs out there that create frames in between, if not that then Premiere has a pretty solid effect called Optical Flow that gets the job done better than one might imagine.
  • I think we need sound effects (quiet, muffled of course) in the Resistance base scenes and definitely in pilot reactions.
  • Agreed with Neverar on the red glow.
  • fish doesn’t have a bad point, the first part of the music in the Snoke scene could easily be replaced with the shorter sting from the film and FYC version of the cue (for reference: https://youtu.be/PoT-5Cfbfmw?t=2m40s)
  • I’m not sold on the new Hux lines, I don’t think the quality is quite there, and I’m not sure why a line for him is needed anyway, it unnecessarily extends a scene that, as I’ve said before, should, if anything, be trimmed down.
  • Besides the obvious of making that shot of Hux full size, I think a very slight camera shake might give it life. Failing that, it might be better to just kill it completely while still having the music start after Snoke’s line - you wouldn’t line up the music perfectly with how it is in the next scene anymore, but it might be worth it.

( plus i may still be adding the “you’re Mother once thought as you do” line instead of the original "Obi-Wan).

This is a really cool idea, and honestly I’d argue there’s a reason to do it even if we ignore the prequels completely. I’d be very happy if you did this, if even just as a bonus “alternate scene” on the DVD or something.

Yeah, I mean in the final Snoke scene the music while it does have the choir and stuff is a little more loud and tense, so this scene should have something similar to that, not the earlier Snoke scenes.

Actually it’s not the best idea, but one could just reuse that same cue from the end of that scene (I believe it’s halfway through “The Abduction”). There are other moments in the score that could work too. Or an original composition would be cool!

The other thing is, it would not be hard to move the horn sting in the cue I suggested to right after Snoke says weapon, so you’re not stepping on his dialogue at all.

I prefer the Snoke music to the other music tbh. I think it transitions into the next scene quite nicely and it doesn’t kill the momentum for me.

Hard disagree. We’ve just, in the last couple of minutes, seen the Starkiller destroy the Republic, and now we learn they’re turning on the Resistance. This is a big “dun dun” moment, not a place for the quiet, ambient, and mysterious Snoke music.

I actually feel like Hal’s first attempt with my idea was closer to it, on his second one the music was a bit drowned. I wouldn’t be afraid to raise the dialogue, rather than lower the music. As for Neverar, I think half the point (in my mind anyway) of the music change is that the “Snoke theme” kills the pacing and the mood. If anything I’d say we should be looking for ways to trim the scene down so it doesn’t feel like it wasn’t envisioned as part of the climax (which the Snoke music makes plainly obvious, I feel).

A friend of mine suggested that I watch Rebels, which I already planned to do at some point in the future, just hadn’t gotten around to yet. However, he says the first season sucks, but it gets great as soon as S2 begins. Is that a fair assessment? If so, how much of S1 do I have to watch to know enough to get to the good stuff?

I wouldn’t call that a fair assessment. The first season is slow to start, but it becomes pretty good by the end. S2 is good but of somewhat inconsistent quality, so I wouldn’t really say it’s a significant improvement. I’d just start from the beginning. The “bad” stuff isn’t really all that bad.

The unfinished “Amendments to the constitution / Palpatine’s Machinations” scene is actually usable now that these guys showed how it could be edited.

Maybe even darkening the shadows would help.

Oh brillant scene it is ! Does it exist in better quality that could match the other deleted sequences (it’s from the bluray set, so might be ?) ? If so I would love to see it integrated in an extended cut 😃

I like that scene as well. The quality is okay. The main thing that keeps me from using it is that the masking of actors in front of the Coruscant skyline is really atrocious. I did include a scene in my Episode II edit with some poor masking but this is even worse imo.

I feel like you could probably find away to cut around the offending aspects. What you’d need though is the scene to be upscaled like the DVD ones.
