Frankly, they should’ve both just let Hamill and Ford et al. decide their characters’ fates.

Well, yes and no.

Yes, if you’re going for unchanging characters since the actors have inhabited these roles for years and know a whole lot about what makes these characters tick.

No, if you’re going for a continuation of a character arc like Hermit Luke. In this case it’s important for the writers to know what they’re doing.

Not at all. Harrison Ford, for example, wanted Han to die.

And Hamill wanted Luke to go bad in ROTJ. People are just making stuff up now, Lucas never listened to his actors (nor was he under any obligation to).

In fairness, Michael Arnt had no script almost one year into his hiring. Ideally they would have given him more time to crack the story but with the short schedule they were given I don’t really blame them for getting rid of him. It’s just that JJ should have been kept far away from the script.

*no completed and approved script.

It’s not like he was twiddling his thumbs. He was doing what Abrams wouldn’t: putting thought into the script.

He was working with Abrams.

He was fired when Abrams was hired and said he wanted to do the script himself, he brought in Kasdan, and they kept the protagonist being a girl and Luke being at an ancient Jedi Temple. The plot and story was thrown out to make Luke a maguffin and to mimic A New Hope.

This is all just factually untrue. Arndt worked with Abrams and even with Kasdan on the script. The plot and story was not thrown out at all, it naturally evolved from what Arndt was writing. And it was Arndt who decided Luke shouldn’t be in the film, because he thought it took the focus off the protagonist.

Just saying “hur hur JJ dumb no thought happened here” is ridiculous. That’s not how movies are made. I think TROS is a disaster of epic proportions, but just saying something like “wow they really put no thought into it” is a really uninformed way to criticize it. It’s easy to see the thought process that goes into poor creative decisions if you’re willing to look closely.

No thought into story or character arcs. He put lots of thought into visuals. No one said he did nothing, but he fired Oscar-winning screenwriters and then failed to actually write more than nostalgia. That’s not putting thought into the story. His time and energy went elsewhere.

He traded ONE Oscar winning screenwriter for Lawrence fuckin Kasdan, don’t think anyone should be too angry about that. Especially when he hired an Oscar winning screenwriter for TROS that completely tanked the whole film. I don’t really care to argue with the rest of your post because I think it’s pretty shallow analysis. And, regardless, this is the wrong thread for it.

Kasdan is great, so is Terrio. You can see both of their influence under the mandated dumbing down with nostalgia.

Look at any interview with Terrio. He was an awful choice for the film - a “fan” who thought he could fix all the “problems” with the last two films. Someone who fundamentally misunderstood the franchise in many ways. A terrible influence on the script.

When fans give the story more thought than the writers.
Sigh

I mean that’s not really true though.

I’d say it’s true in relation to JJ Abrams’ writing.

Just because the final product ended up in a certain simplified way doesn’t thought wasn’t put into its development.

Crazy coincidence that all of JJ Abrams’ films turn out half baked despite the thought he puts in them and his public quotes that he prefers mysteries with no answers…

That’s the thing though, that’s the style of story he prefers so he cuts it down to that. Doesn’t mean the writers “put less though into it than the fans.” We’re talking about people who spent months working full-time jobs just working on the script. You can complain all you want about the end result but don’t make up stuff about the process.

Option E looks great, though I’m not completely sold on that lens flare. I do like the second little flare and I like the flare in the moment it passes the camera, but after that it’s not perfect for me. I think it’s just one of those subconscious things where you can just kinda tell it’s not quite right for whatever reason. I think lens flares are just a little pesky like that. Maybe an option F without it?

There are ROTS soundtrack fan edits with clean versions of this (pulled from stuff like video games). I’ll send you a PM when I get the chance.

That would be amazing (a dream come true)! Thank you, and take your time!

Maybe I spoke too soon, looks like that section specifically is missing from the tracks I have. Never noticed that, damn.

Sorry to get your hopes up!

A recent mention of “Anthem of Evil” in this or Hal’s thread brought to mind something that has bothered me for a long time, which is that I can’t find the original Darth Plagueis them from ROTS. There’s plenty of tracks with the opera scene and Palpatine themes, but they don’t have my favorite part, which is the 7 notes that play as Palpatine is saying “Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord…to create life.”

I remember the theories and videos surrounding the similarity to Snoke’s theme, but why I can’t I find Plagueis’ them in the original instrumentation anywhere? It might be one of my favorite musical bits in of Star Wars, which may be an over-the-top feeling based simply on the frustration of not being able to find it!

Here’s a link with two pieces:

pw: fanedit

The first is from ROTS with the center channel turned off (you can still hear Palpatine a bit as he’s mixed into all of the channels). The second is my recreation of the theme using the choir from Anthem of Evil. I didn’t have all of the notes, and pitch-shifting sounded only okay, so I tried to cover for this by adding some flutes in garage band. I don’t know if this would be useful to anyone, but I love this theme, and thought it would be cool to think about somewhere.

There are ROTS soundtrack fan edits with clean versions of this (pulled from stuff like video games). I’ll send you a PM when I get the chance.

For TRoS Edits: Dialogue for the Knights of Ren! Come help! (Released)

Truth be told I think you’re trying to accomplish way too much in the time allotted. Sometimes less is more, especially in Star Wars with cool looking masked characters like these. For example, the first moment on Pasaana, I think it’d be a lot more impactful if the only line was “I get his teeth.” I could go down the line but, while these are fun suggestions, every single moment would be better by keeping it short. When the Knights confront Ben in particular is really too much. Just one short sweet line like “still chasing the girl would work,” timed so as to not step on Williams’s music which is doing a lot for the scene on its own.

I agree, I’ll see about boosting the volume for a couple at the start. And I don’t want to distort all of them, but some could go further. Lando’s voice sounds super clear so I think the voices don’t need to be so modulated that it’s harder to hear them. But yeah I’ll keep tinkering with this.

Would you mind if I mixed this part for you? I do audio (not a video guy like most of you),

Audio guy eh? Could you take a look at this and tell us if it’s improvable?

Feedback is good. I don’t think it’s quite there yet either but you can see how it’s shaping up. It’s a tricky thing and I’m trying to identify why it feels off to me too. Here’s my thoughts.

  • It doesn’t necessarily make sense, but I think after Lando’s line you should let the music have it’s moment before the chatter starts to pick up when the Star Wars theme has fully kicked in.
  • Either cut the chatter when Poe’s talking, or make it really soft and indistinguishable
  • Some of the call ins are too clear and need more distortion
  • Maybe a bit too much overlapping on the call ins?
  • The first "For Skywalker"s are nice but I think the second round is really pushing it. Tough because I know so many people are involved on that one and this was the real focus here but it just seems a bit repetitious for so many people to be saying that exact phrase.
  • I almost wonder if it’d be better if it was two "For Skywalker"s, then someone saying “Skywalker lives!” and then for the next one people said something else (“For Leia”? “For the Republic”? “For Kijimi”? something like that) or just nothing at all.

Also, we don’t know if he’s actually playing Boba. So far as I can tell, that’s just an assumption literally everyone made but nobody’s got confirmed. The other assumption is that he could also be playing Captain Rex but it seems like nobody’s even really trying to guess at option C, which is that he’s only playing Rex, and Boba won’t be in the show at all.

I think the Boba assumption comes from what most people think was a Boba tease last season.

Either way, the idea that Disney is making any decisions based on a weird sense of antagonism doesn’t make any sense.

Some fans think Disney HATES the prequels, others think they HATE the OT.
