I saw one of the screenings of the 70mm just last night. After I got back home, I checked my dinky galaxy s8 to see if the 4k restoration trailer from Chris Nolan was anywhere near accurate. I can say without a shadow of doubt, this is the most accurate film transfer I have ever seen. Of course the quality was lacking in terms or digital vs crystal clear (and stuttery) celluloid film. There is no revisionism in terms of white balance, crushed blacks or anything, except for an exceptional clean up job of dust and scratches. The old bluray definitely stinks of revisionism and modern standards of the time. I’m glad we had someone like Chris Nolan overseeing the whole thing. Wish we had someone just like that for the beloved original trilogy… 😒

But are you certain the 70mm print doesn’t have faded elements?

I think he might be talking about something that I’ve experienced, which is when I try to backspace on mobile, it sometimes jumbles some of the words without reason. Like I’ll click back mid sentence to fix a typo and when I backspace to erase it the interface just takes the word I’m erasing and the previous word and mixes them together. I don’t know what causes it, but this specific typo (“aboumonnarchs”) seems indicative of the same problem.

From the 35mm Kubrick festival I just returned from:

I loved most of it, though the beginning portion didn’t feel particularly special. Nothing bad, and the last bit was superb.

Haven’t seen this in a long time, so there was a lot of great humour I didn’t remember. I think it’s one of Kubrick’s best films, even down to the end credits being timed to the music. That is, out of his films I have seen so far.

I liked the second half of this a lot better this time around. I suppose it’s because I knew what was coming, but it grew on me now anyway. Certainly flawed, and not anywhere near my favorites of Kubrick’s work, but great nonetheless.

Ranking the Star Wars films

I think the prequels are crud and I still wasn’t impressed by TFA. But different strokes and all that jazz.

Yeah, that.

Also, rankin’ time, though I haven’t seen Solo yet. This is in three categories. The first is movies I will definitely be watching again, the second is movies I will probably watch again, or might watch again under certain circumstances, and the third is movies I have absolutely no desire to revisit.

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
…a colossal bit of space…
The Phantom Menace

Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
The Holiday Special

The Force Awakens
The Last Jedi
Rogue One
The Battle for Endor
The Clone Wars

Is watching Star Wars on DVD for the first time the only thing that has brought joy into your life?

Have you seen the DVD?

Have you seen Drag Me To Hell? I’m seriously asking. It’s surprisingly good for what it is, which is a Sam Raimi campy horror film that takes itself about as seriously as Super Mario Bros.

I have!

I still want to see it some time. Haven’t gotten around to it.
