Great movies you hate.

I hate "Dr. Zhivago." Hate it hate it hate it. It's not that I'm opposed to older films, I love many old classics. I just hate Zhivago. SOOOO much.

I also was bored to tears by "Nashville"  and I think "2001" was 40+ minutes too long.

On the less arty front, I don't like any TOS Star Trek films except "Undiscovered Country."

So, what great movies do you hate?

what's wrong with Wrath Of Khan?    Voyage Home?

I wouldn't say I hate this movie,  but I don't get it: Citizen Kane.    Another movie that I wouldn't say I hate, but it just confuses me: 2001.

I don't hate hate them, but I don't ever plan on watching them again.

If you want to understand the film, read the book.  Everything you don't understand in the movie is explained.  Some people have the opinion that the book explains too much & doesn't let the audience draw their own conclusions.  But I think it really enhances the movie experience.

I really liked the movie before reading the book, but now I LOVE the movie.

I can also understand the frustration some might have, needing to read the book in order to understand the movie. But again, I think they did it right b/c the explanations in the book would not translate to film well & I like it left as being implied rather than implicitly stated in the movie.

If you want to know the basic premise.... SPOILERS AHEAD

Spoiler:

It's aliens.  They plant the monoliths at key points in the evolution of man.  they planted the seeds of life on earth, then come back to check up on it.  The aliens started as mortals like us.  then as their technology advanced past nature, they transfered their consciousness into machines.  Then they evolved to the point that they had no bodies at all, being essentialy gods.  & now man is on the same journey & dave bowman is the first human to transcend the need for a physical body.

Kubrick's films can be pretty enjoyable, but I really don't see them as masterpieces. It seems like he tried to be looked at as a genius. I always saw him as a great innovator in the pre-modern age of film.

Godfather is the number one film on my list of great movies I hate. I gave it a chance, but I never really understood it's popularity. The only thing I can praise it for is the acting, aside from that the story is dull. I can also praise it for destroying the mafia genre. Let's face it, Godfather has been remade and remade and ripped off countless times. I don't understand the thrill in it. I have been shunned by friends for not liking it. I must have a deformity or something, because I am the only one who hates it. Even Roger Ebert loves it and he doesn't like anything.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

I guess you like The Untouchables then. Just take a look at what technology has proven. For once Eye didn't shoot first.

Another vote for 2001.  Heck, lets go through AFI's top 25 movies that I watched with some friends:

24.     Raging Bull
23.     The Maltese Falcon
22.     2001: A Space Odyssey
8.     On the Waterfront
5.     Lawrence of Arabia
2.     Casablanca
1.     Citizen Kane

Raging Bull and On the Waterfront, seriously, two boxing movies?  I'll admit that Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, Lawrence, and Kane are "classics", but it doesn't help them from being boring.  I enjoyed the Grapes of Wrath for some reason, can't recall why.

Oof.  I hate hate hate that movie, and the book even more.  Actually, I think my intense hatred of the book meant there was no chance for me to like the movie.

I think the problem is you aren't paying close enough attention to the dog.

2001 doesnt confuse me at all.

It just bores me to tears.

15 minutes of slitscreen photography and odd colored landscapes? Endless shots of things moving in zero gravity? That great "oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo" drone sound that is used endlessly?  I get what the movies about, and I just wish it was a lot shorter.

It's hard not to turn this into a "WHAT?? YOU DON'T LIKE THAT MOVIE??" thread, so I will refrain. <cough-cough didn'tlikeragingbull?? cough-cough>

I had a look at the AFI list and have seen a majority.  I didn't get to one I don't like until #65, The Silence of the Lambs.  That just didn't do it for me.

You should watch Adabisi's "Humans Are Limited" 18 min. short on the Space Consecution project.

Hmm, looking through AFI's list(s)...  I haven't seen all of them, but I've seen a lot.  While hate is perhaps too strong, I don't like Forrest Gump, Fantasia, Titanic, or Bladerunner (that one even surprised me as I've liked pretty much every film Harrison Ford did in the 80's & I love scifi & film noir).

But I do hate one... I hated Lord of the Rings.  I even gave the second one a shot & hated it too.  Never even tried to watch the 3rd one.

Spiderman.  Didn't even bother with 2 or 3 (is that how many there are now) because I couldn't stand the first one.
