Don’t watch the prequels at all. I honestly don’t know why people feel the need to include them. Even the best edits can’t add anything to them that’s needed to make them better, and can’t remove everything that’s bad, they can only rearrange stuff, and they’ll always be crap. The best part about it, is that they truthfully don’t need to exist. The story starts in Star Wars, and is rightfully continued in The Empire Strikes Back, and that continuation is concluded well (kind of) in Return of the Jedi. Just stick with those, because the prequels don’t add anything to the story, they just take away.

EDIT: Okay, I just thought about my statement that edits can’t add to the film, and that’s not really true, but the point I was making is that anything any fan-editor can do to any of the prequels can’t save them from their underlying disease. They were too far gone already when George started writing (which for ROTS was partway through shooting and that makes it much worse).

VLC doesn’t seem to be playing nicely with this for me (it does not like Blu-rays with menus). I did my testing on PS4, PS3, PowerDVD, and Total Media Theatre. Your vlc may be set up better than mine, though.

How about MPC HC?

Looks like it works perfectly! Plays ANH by default but you can select playlist through the drop menu to 0001, which will be SW. No menu support, of course.

Why doesn’t it support menus?

And with that, the “secret release”, a “workprint extended edition” of the film, splicing deleted scenes into the silver screen edition, will be moved to the bonus material disc 4.

I have a question about this, Darth. Is the extended cut going to include the SE Jabba, and if so, which version is going to be used for that? Also, I assume that the deleted scene of Luke and Biggs reuniting is going to be the one included on the BD bonus features rather than the SE version. I’m just curious about this stuff.

FWIW, I’m in talks with Blue_Harvest on an idea I had that will help get even non-technical people involved in the restoration, but in a way that won’t impact the quality of the end product. I’ll give more details when we’re done working them out.

I’m probably the most useless member on this site when it comes to this kind of thing, but it would be cool if this non-technical person without any money to spend could get involved.

Team Negative1 - Star Wars 1977 - 35mm Eastman Vs Technicolot Theatrical Version (* unfinished project *)

Well, I don’t mind fixing the color off-set, because that isn’t recompositing the effect. The color space is off, so putting it together will make it look better, but to each his own. I still want fully completed versions of the Tech and '97 SE so I can make my personal version of Star Wars.

I would say that my only things to pick with what I’ve seen of Legacy are as follows:

  1. The grain reduction. I prefer 35mm grain over the negative, and even when he’s using 35mm prints, he’s reducing the grain to achieve a near negative medium.

  2. The opening crawl. After I saw the crawl preview on his vimeo, I just thought, Why would you do that? I mean, the crawl losing detail as it goes further up the frame is the natural fade into black. He even said that he doesn’t want to change anything internally, and I would say that is doing exactly that.

Other than these nitpicks, I am really liking how the previews look, aside from the color grading of course, and I am looking forward to more news.

I apologize for continuing this conversation, for those who feel that it’s getting old and won’t do any good, but I felt this had to be pointed out in light of Mikes comments about TN1’s restoration in the video. He said that the break of trust was for nothing because it just led to an amateurish, crappy restoration job. I would assume he’s speaking of the SSE. Maybe he didn’t realize that the Tech print from Joe wasn’t used for the SSE? The only thing anyone saw of the Tech was the preview, which, AFAIK, wasn’t finished anyway. And then there’s the fact that the only thing wrong with the SSE is the light leak that plagues it, and the rest of the work done on it is amazing.

EDIT: I see I was beat to the punch by two other lengthy comments. Why do I type so slowly?

I don’t see why being in a different location makes it any safer.

Fair point, though that isn’t even the reason anyway, so it doesn’t matter much now.

So this all came about because someone who owns an original print had a scan of it made and someone else has a copy of the scan that person paid for afterward. Yet the one who owns the original print STILL owns an original print. A PHYSICAL print.

It must be a western idea but I really do not see what the problem is here. It’s hard to digitally lay claim to ownership of something without a digital watermark from the beginning. Yeah they paid for it to be scanned but really what were they planning to do with it after it was scanned? Sit on it and pass it on to their children? To do what? Continue to sit on it?

Maybe it’s good I missed all the drama of the past few weeks. Longtime lurker here.

I get that the main point of this post is just to say you’re unaware of what is going on. But yes, you are absolutely unaware of everything that has gone on, why it is important, what the intentions are for the prints and scans in question, and why those involved are concerned about unforeseen distribution of those materials. And I think most of those aspects have been discussed today as well as throughout the weekend, so the answers should be fairly near the surface if you’re looking to be a bit more informed. Writing it off as a western thing would be another option.

What I don’t get about this is that it technically wasn’t TN1’s fault. To be honest, and no disrespect meant, I’d say the whole thing was Mike’s fault, and person 2’s fault afterward. Person 2 should never have had access to person 3’s scan. Why did Mike give it to him/her, regardless of how trustworthy they were? If the purpose was keeping a backup in a different location, I don’t see why being in a different location makes it any safer. Now you just don’t have access to it and can’t protect it. Why didn’t Mike just keep the other backup? Whether it was with him or person 2 shouldn’t matter. Just my thoughts.
