Star Wars references in other movies
Time
i actually saw part of 'Jersey Girl' maybe the first 15-20 minutes...minus maybe 5 minutes in the beginning. From what i saw it looked like the overall plot of the story was pretty good, cant really speak for its execution as all i really saw was really the start of the character development and all that fun stuff.

I def wouldnt put it in the Jay & Silent Bob set of films and style though.

norinradd, not a problem. i can fully understand that...well not fully as i havent done a dissertation, but i can see how it can put you in 'devils advocate mode' i guess i was being someone of a devils advocate myself, so sorry if i roused your feathers but overall i agree that lawsuits arent the answer, the MPAA and RIAA need to think ahead of the game and take control over these methods to use them to benifit themselves if they really want to reduce their 'losses' if they realized that their prices are too high, and took a lesson from itunes and similar services they would probably curb a good chunk of illegal downloads and actually sell more product.

Hardcore, i pretty much agree with your point of view. there seems to be a fine line between illegal and immoral when it comes to this topic. Im not that familar with actual copyright law as im not a lawyer and dont pretend to be, but i wonder what the official legal stance on loaning a tape to your friend is. do the blockbusters and hollywood videos pay licensing fees that allow them to rent movies? I think part of the problem is, the current copyright law really doesnt adequatly cover some/most/all of these possibilities

first ive seen it twice and have spent $18 on it i will probably see it again with my brother. I will buy the dvd the day it comes out as well.

but not everyone that downloads it is like you and me and probably many other people on this site. so it doesnt ultimatly matter if we will go out and buy 3 copies of the dvd when its released or 1. the law is in place to protect the people that created and to do that it has to handle the lowest common denominator. is that right? should someone that makes a movie (or other work) be able to make money off it and control how and when its released? I guess you can debate the answer to that, but as it stands in the US they should be able to.

as far as the money you spent. My $18 is the price of the two tickets I bought. It doesnt include snacks, which i dont buy cause they along with the tickets are overpriced, so if the theater owner is going to get money from me for something i think is over priced im gonna limit the money they get. Fandango charges you for the service of buying online tickets, that was your choice, its not an extra dollar in the Studios pocket, and actually comes from higher credit card rates for online/phone orders. Same with snacks, that doesnt go to the Studios, at least not directly as far as i know. I mean, technically i could include the price i paid for gas to get to the theater on money i spent on the movie. Im not trying to belittle you, but the point is, just because you paid for the movie once, or twice or however many times. and spent however much money on it doesnt mean you have the right to have the movie before its officially released.

if its a tvshow that has been off the air for years and there is no inkling of it ever being released, while under the law its the same, in my view its different than a movie that has just come out in theaters and we already know its gonna be on dvd in 5 months. You've waited how long for the movie to be released and you cant wait another 5 months for the dvd so you can watch it anytime you want? Plus, what dvds of single movies, that arent 'collectors' sets or something along those lines that cost you $50. Episodes I & II MSRP's was 29.98, even retail stores like best buy were selling it new when it first came out for around $22.

now, while overall my line of thinking of downloading stuff is probably more along the same lines as yours as opposed to the MPAA's and RIAA's it doesnt make it right in the law. but seriously, the numbers of what they are loosing is hugely exaggerated. if i had a copy of episode III on dvd, or even an mpeg, would i probably watch it 10+ times while it was still in theaters? yeah, probably. would i still see it multiple times in the theater, again yes. If i didnt have a copy, which i dont, would i go to the movies 10+ times and spend $9 a viewing to see it, nope.

your toy example is also flawed. in that example the toy was payed for. Your brothers was paid for by him. Your friend paid for his. whoever made the toy got paid for both. when your friend gives the toy to you there is still only 2 'copies' both of which were paid for. its technically a gift. replace toy with dvd, it still plays the same, unless now instead of giving the toy to you, your friend makes a copy of the toy (ie downloading) now there are 3 copies, one of which was made in violation of the law. I could also argue, that now using dvd instead of toy, your brother is falsly profiting from the movie because its for private viewing and in violation of copyright law.

again, not trying to bash you, just pointing out the MPAA's problem with downloading. are they totally correct? no, like i said, i probably agree more with your line of thought. but not everyone does. Did they cause the problem? it could be argued yes, through hi prices and what not. do i think they are combating the problem wrong (created by them or not)? yes.

yes but where you do it is where it matters.

as far as internet being global comment and the laws about intellectual property being country specific. while this is true all it does is make it hard for the copyright holders to file lawsuits and/or cease and desists agains the person running the server. That doesnt make it legal for someone in the US to download/upload the material, all it does is prevent the people from hosting access to the file from getting introuble.

so is weed legal in some countries? yes. does that mean i can go buy it there and bring it back to the US for my personal use? no, because it then violate US laws. same for downloading files. does sweden have laws in place to protect US copyrights (apparently not) but does that mean its legal for someone in the US to download the file? nope

Exactly, my comment was partly what hardcore said, but also the way you stated it it was like you were refering to specifically new p2p protocols where downloaders also upload. sure if no one up loads it to an ftp site no one can download it. but with stuff like bittorrent, if i have a torrent open, and people know about it, and can get the torrent and connect to it, but no one ever does ive not uploaded anything...so unless someone downloads it from me, ive never uploaded anything and therefore havent done anything wrong. but if some mpaa goon comes along and downloads it from me now ive broken the law but according to you they havent (though in this case since they work for mpaa they arent really breaking a law) but had they not have downloaded it, i wouldnt have been uploading it...do you see my point here

*edit*
norinradd the country it takes place in doesnt really affect the legality of it. and by hardcores comment, and the discussion i think its safe to assume he meant illegal drugs, i dont think he meant the eye drops my doctor prescribed to me yesterday, or the claritin i take for my allergies should bring me under prosecution, that would be obsurd.

the point is that ok, even though the downloader or buyer wouldnt be breaking the law if the uploader or seller didnt exist, the downloader/buyer is still breaking the law. Just because you can get an illegal substance doesnt make it legal to do so. i think thats where the 'get real' comment came from.

but if no one downloaded it then no one would be uploading it. so by what you said we now have something akin to entrapment or something like that

i dont read TheForce.net. but I also dont see how/what limits his comments to only prequal-obsessed Star Wars fans. The article struck me as more agains SW Fans in general, maybe even agains Sci Fi, fans or even just people that are fans of a particular series/franchise.

If I had one criticism about that article, it would be that the over-merchandising of Star Wars is nothing new ... Return of the Jedi's use in advertising was just as nauseating as Sith's (C3PO cereal, anyone?).

agreed, some of the merchandising was great, i personally love the M&M's but ive also been saying they need Dark Chocolate M&M's for years, and when they came out with them i was like, damn, that was a great tie-in. Most movies have their standard line of merchandising, generally toys/shirts. bigger movies have larger collections of toys, and start getting into other areas. also, i think its more a hollywood thing in general than a SW thing. if they can make a quick buck off of it then their all for it, it doesnt matter if the connection makes sense, just that both parties are willing to work together. but again, that has nothing to do with SW inparticular, which is another qualm i have with the article.

Quote

Oh, and the Henson bit is wrong. Henson himself really didn't have much/anything to do with Yoda ... most of the people who were involved are still alive and kicking.

see, but the guy didnt even bother to look into any of that stuff when he wrote the article, which is why i have a problem about most of what he says, because he apparently didnt do any research for it, just assumed he knew everything.
*edit* so like MeBe said, that wasnt his overall point, but for me, if you make a point, even a valid one, that is based in falsities, then you loose some of your credence. and when you do it more then once, or during your whole arguement you loose more and more credence.

that column did more bashing to sw fans then the movies. it refers to someones dislike of marketing tie-ins as a reason why Star Wars should be forgotten. It essentially says all the SW movies (OT included) are shitty kids movies that are overhyped and should have been forgotten years ago.

and mostly its just seems like some stupid rant from a guy who has to belittle others to make himself feel good, who calls people 'geeks' and tells them to 'go outside' all the while sitting behind his computer writing an online article for a sci fi magazine. but we're the geeks who need to go outside.

at one point he claims lucas is not 'one of the great, visionary directors of all time' only to later on say that he'll admit that the films were 'landmark filmmaking' and 'cutting edge' but then says that they are 'always and forever, movies for anxious, easily stupefied 10-year-old boys' totally contridicting himself as he does at various other points in the article. So now just because the bar that was set by a film has be later raised, it means that films contribution to the bars current height no longer matters?

he refers to lines of the script as 'seemingly written by that slightly twitchy tin-eared dweeb who sat next you in fifth-grade algebra, sweatingly' yet astounds us with his many wonderful sexual and porn references that sound like the ramblings of teenagers who just for the first time heard about sex and think its cool (and necessary) to make references to it in every other sentance.

maybe if he got off his high horse and didnt think he was all hi and mighty i could give some small bit of credence to anything he said in that article. but as it stands now its basically some ramblings of some immature adolescense who doesnt even have the journalistic integrity to check up on sources that he quotes as fact in his column. i doubt he even read the article after he wrote it, because if he did he would have noticed that half the garbage he 'accuses' star wars fans of in that article he himself is guilty of in that very same article.

well i havent used ASP.NET as most of the stuff I program isnt web-based. but im sure i could pick it up relativly quick. so my offer stands, even if you just need help with some debugging or just need to run something by someone else, as I know just talking out a problem with someone has allowed me to come up with a solution in the past.

i didnt think he said tremor, i thought he said 'i feel something, a presence ive not felt since....'

oh, maybe when he's talking to tarkin he says tremor. he could have just used tremor as in a change, i mean, besides him and the emperor vader wouldnt have felt any fluctuation or any thing in the force, then someone else that can use the force shows up and it causes a change, its been a while but he recognizes it as obi-wans presense and doesnt notice that 'there is another' so to speak.

anywway, i dunno. what were we talking about again that got us here

ok, providing i have the right guy

Saul Hudson (The Underground Comedy Movie) Joey Buttafuoco (Finding Forrester) Sean Connery (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade) Harrison Ford

Bossk, its actually a pretty good show, dunno why they canceled it, but she does have a movie or two coming out so she's not really unemployed :-p

but i think its a rule that if at all possible you have to use a movie called Live Nude Girls

ok, hopefully this one presents a little challenge

not that im argueing the point, or even disagreeing. but the last time he was in the presence of his old master was when padme was also there, so Luke was present as well...

but i do think that vader would/is able to recognize obi-wans presence and this is what he's refering to.

Could this be a bit of a chinese whisper? What's the original source for identifying Obi-Wan's call as being that of a Krayt Dragon?

Maybe they saw his lightsaber and had flashbacks to the Tusken Raider legend of this guy who single handedly killed a whole tribe of Tusken Raiders with a 'laser sword'

what? no way...i refuse to believe that. First they werent on Tatooine. Second, Kyrat dragons eat people or something...i dont think they are nice enough to ride as a pet. third, i dont think there are more than a few on Tatooine, and four, they are WAAAAAY bigger...remember that skelaton we see in ANH when C3PO sees the Jawa Sandcrawler? that is a Kyrat dragon skelaton.

plus, that think squeaked/squealed. and did it way too much at that.
