WYSIWYG vs Tag editing
Time

I wish you would bring back editing where I can use tags. It is more powerful.

With the WYSIWYG editor (current), it is not possible to break up quotes into segments to address individual points in the parent post one by one. I have to quote it in its entirety and then write a large block - which becomes confusing, or post multiple messages.

Sometimes, you want to quote multiple people at once also.

It is also difficult to move the cursor above a quote, in case you wanted to write something that isn't a direct reply to a previous post, but also reply to a specific reply later in the same message.

When and in what format was the first time you saw Star Wars?
Time

My first exposure to Star Wars was that I got the Return of the Jedi comic book album as a birthday gift from a classmate at my birthday party in '83 when I was eight years old.

The first time I saw Star Wars (ANH) was on television not much later. My dad taped the event (on VHS :b ). I and my brother played that tape often. I especially loved the X-wings.

The Star Wars hype was much stronger at that time than it has ever been before or since - and even more so for a kid. We also collected action figures, swapped them, and played with them a lot. I also often played that I was Luke - as a jedi knight with a lightsaber, as I had read about him in ROTJ.

I did not see The Empire Strikes Back until the early 90's when I was a teenager, again on television. It was first by then that I realized why the "Jedi training school" that I had played with my friends as a kid had involved so much climbing in trees. :^D

ROTJ is the one that has had made the most impression on me, but I rank ESB as being the best Star Wars movie.

It doesn't look warm and toasty inside Echo Base, probably -12 degrees Celsius. So my question is, at the threshold of the hangar door, would the -32 degree air meeting the -12 degree air produce any kind of visible water vapor, or is it too cold?

The "mist" that you can see when you exhale into freezing air is light reflected off ice molecules that have just been formed from the previously liquid water of your breath.

For this effect to occur, the water must have a temperature above freezing to start with.

This would not occur in Echo base because temperatures are below freezing both inside and outside the base (C-3PO said that it was freezing even in Princess Leia's private chamber, remember ... )

Also, air humidity decreases with lower temperatures. Cold weather that is below -5 degrees Celsius is always very dry.

I can remember at the very end of Empire when all the Rebel ships are at the nebula at the end just before the credits, I can remember seeing them all jump to light speed just before the credits rolled.

We already covered that earlier in this thread.  It never happened, it was just some people's imaginations feeding off of each other.

You are wrong.

The movie ended with a concentric wipe. The setting in space is replaced with the black background of the end credits.

The wipe gives the effect that the ships went to lightspeed - if you don't look close enough.
So, those who remember it, do remember it correctly, they just perceived it wrong to start with.

Yes, this was covered before, and I did write the same explanation back then, but I see that several people did not get it. The wipe was (also) in the OOT. You can verify that for yourselves!

I would very much like the wipe to be restored in this edit.

I noticed something with the color correction, in a few of the videos that were posted. I don't know if these were intended to be the final shots or if they have been corrected.

The hue of the Snowspeeder pilots costumes is not consistent between every shot. Some times, the costume is much too red. The real flight suit (pants) had a mid-orange hue with no shift towards red. The jacket should have largely the same orange hue as the pants (coveralls) but be only slightly less saturated, except on Dagobah where the jacket gets darker because it gets wet and dirty. If the jacket has a shift from orange, it is towards yellow.

See especially in the shot where Han arrives at Echo base after leaving Luke. Look first at the pilot that passes Han Solo and then at the pilots working on a snowspeeder. I noticed no such color problems in my OOT / laserdisc-RIP.

The past few weeks I have been studying all the images that I could find of the Hoth Snowspeeder outfit, because I want to construct this costume for myself. I have looked at both movie stills, production photos and publicity shots. When I have come far enough, I will of course make my patterns and other findings freely available for everyone else. Doing research on costumes and props sometimes makes you overly attentive to certain details...

I believe that the Wampa hand-puppet prop used in the attack-short had horns, just that they were covered over with white fur a little bit too much when the prop was made. What could be perceived as darker patches in his high cheek bones (...) are the horns.

I think those features should be used as starting points when painting the new horns, and let remain somewhat obscured, but not as much as before.

Btw, the hand-puppet has quite prominent ears, just that they are not seen from the angle used in the first shot.

Adywan's ESB edit: Suggestion Terminal

These two statements are contradictory:

If your idea isn't put on it,then it was shot down... or Ady said he wasn't doing it...

If you have suggestions, check to see if its on the list. If not? Post in the other thread and it'll be added to this list.

So, is this a wish-list, or a todo-list?

And there are two "other threads":

STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION

 ESB and ROTJ Wishlist

Not everything mentioned in one thread has been mentioned in the other, and vice versa.

1. The original version has the Rebel fleet hyperspace out immediately before the end credits. Follow-up versions (THX re-release, Special Edition and DVD) all cut to the end credits before the hyperspace jump.

IMDB seems to be the only source on this, as no one I've seen in other threads can produce the evidence or video that the fleet ever went into hyperspace. I need to see if my dad still has the original CBS-FOX VHS copies of ESB and RotJ and see if this is true. I grew up on those copies though, and I don't remember that.

I just had to check, because I remembered the jump too.
On my copy from the Definitive Collection, the scene ends in a radial wipe to end credits. On my OOT-tape (recorded from TV, my THX tape was lost to a hungry VCR), it is a straight cut. The wipe sure reminds of a hyperspace jump, and I guess that it was the intended effect.

I'm going to be putting the open window into every shot. Its going to be hard, yeh, but it will be worth it.

Just please don't open the windows near the landing platform more. I think it would be better if these were all closed, instead. The windows are pretty thin, but we can see other parts of the wall later, and then the wall appears to be quite thick.

Jedi Equivalent of the 501st Legion?
Time
I don't recall the Rebel Legion ever being part of the 501st. It was started with the help of the 501st' founder Albin Jonson as a separate "good guy" equivalent to the 501st.
Its club charter started out as a copy-and-paste from the 501st charter with the names replaced, but it has evolved since then.

The Rebel Legion is also recognized by Lucasfilm, but you don't hear that as often.
In both clubs, it is the agreement with LFL that requires that all and any proceeds go to charity.

There are some 1700 members worldwide. I get the impression that there are more women in the Rebel Legion than in the 501st, but don't quote me on that.
Membership is not exclusive - if you have the costumes, you can be in all clubs you want as long as you follow the rules.
If you have Clone armor, then you can also have it in the Rebel Legion - until you get order 66. ;) Even the "501st" clone armor is allowed!.
Anakin Skywalker Episode III costumes belong in both clubs, except that in the 501st you must have "Sith eyes" and in the RL you must not.

In some regions, there is very good cooperation between the local RL and 501st units at events. In others, cooperation is not so good.
However ... some garrisons of the 501st have also created a rival detachment, called the "Rebel Command". As far as I have heard, and seen of 501st members in Rebel outfits at events, these do not have as high costuming standards as the Rebel Legion.
The "Rebel Command" is disliked by many Rebel Legion members, as they are often confused, and are bad for the RL's reputation of being a club with only high-quality costumes.

There is also a costuming club called The Jedi Assembly for Jedi. I don't know much of them.

George Lucas was himself in a couple of Japanese commercials for Panasonic/Technics with the slogan "Something New". They were from 1987.

- Chewie surprising a little girl. Girl pets chewie.
- Ewoks turn on a stereo and get startled, again and again. Thet get used to it and start dancing.
- R2D2 and C-3PO with a portable word processor/computer.
- GL is filming scale models that come to life. C3PO is peeking from around the corner.
but most of all:
- Jabba turns on the stereo, listens to music, and starts to cry. Hilarious!

Leia looks at the same spot, but sees nothing. Luke expects to see a 45-year old healthy man and that is what I think the audience should also see. Sebastian Shaw was 76 years old.

If Christensen is in there, then for consistency's sake, Alec Guiness and Yoda should be exchanged for Ewan McGregor and a tadpole.

I saw ESB again last night and noticed yet another thing:
In the Battle of Hoth, there are multiple groups of AT-AT walkers. I suggest (re)composing in additional walkers in various shots so that we can get more continuity between shots of walkers. For instance, one group of walkers can become the same group as in another shot, etc.

When Luke crash-lands in the snow, there are two AT-ATs. Luke crashes right before the second one, which is behind and to the right of the first one. I assume that it is this walker that crushes his airspeeder.
Later, the walker that Luke destroys with a grenade can not be any of these two, because the first walker is absent, but there is an additional walker far behind them and to the left.
I think it would be great if the walker that crushes Luke's speeder could be made into the same walker that Luke later blows up. I think it makes sense because it is the walker that is closest by, and it also means that Luke would get back at the walker that crushed his speeder.
This requires 1) that the third walker further behind is composed into shots of the first two, 2) that the first walker is inserted into a shot where we see the exploding AT-AT from behind.

Now... after writing down the wish above, I checked the old script: In the script, the destroyed walker is standing to the right of Veers' walker as he is destroying the Rebels' power generator!
Whoa! I think it would be really great if someone could pull this off.
It would mean that it would have been Veers' that had shot down Zev and Luke's snowspeders!

Silly Obi-Wan ANH question
Time
His outfit was not particularly unusual for Tatooine. He probably just bought the garments in a town somewhere.

For a long time, I had believed that the shriek came from the tuskens because they were startled that they had been discovered.
It think it makes a lot of sense that Obi-Wan would have used The Force to 1) augment his vocal cords to make the scream more realistic and intimidating, 2) strike fear into the tuskens.

I agree that Luke is the most important character at the pyre, but I think it makes sense that Leia is present somehow, even if she isn't in frame. I meant of course, that she should be there only if it works cinematically - with focus on Luke. Leia must not steal attention from Luke in that scene.
I'm not sure about this myself at all. Just wanted to bring it to discussion.

Smooth out the stop motion animation on Tauntauns and to a lesser extent AT-AT's & AT-ST's

Some animation has been smoothened in the DVD version of ESB. Is there a need for extra improvement?

Vader's leaving Cloud City - all bad - doesn't sound like JE Jones (although I'm sure I read it is)

Agreed. I also wish the "Bring my shuttle" scene could be moved earlier, but I am not sure that it could be done well. The new shots in ESB-SE try to solve the problem with Vader suddently appearing aboard his Star Destroyer after we had left him on Cloud City. I would prefer to see a better solution to the problem than all the new shots.
One possible way to go would be to insert Vader's shuttle far away in the background when Luke is being rescued. Maybe the shuttle could be yanked from the shot with the shuttle approaching the superstardestroyer

All creaures throughout both ESB & ROTJ need Adywan's Cantina treatment

It is easy to overdo it. Some are better to leave alone.
In my opinion, the bounty hunters on the Executor's bridge are the most important ones, because we see them close-up. Especially Bossk

A couple of badly delivered lines "Our first catch of the day" escape from Hoth.

Just please don't remove this. I love that line, because it shows the overconfidence of the Empire. Maybe different timing.

I watched a few scenes in ESB-OOT and ESB-SE today, so I have more suggestions:
ESB
Edit: Restore this shot to the original. It looks ridicolous that they should suddenly be outside, and the sky is too red. The sky should change gradually.

In ESB-SE, when Lando announces that the Empire has taken control of the city, there are shots of lots of citizens just lounging about on a city square just like there is some big holiday celebration of some sorts. I like some "enhancements" to the Cloud City scenes, but not this particular shot.
In the OOT, this scene had shots of Lando interspersed with shots of R2-D2, but in the SE, R2's shots follow Lando's. The big question is if the SE footage is enough to recreate something that flows, or if the entire sequence has to be grabbed from the OOT.

In ESB-SE, in the shot where Lando grabs Leia from behind to drag her away from shooting to board the Millenium Falcon, there are windows behind her that weren't there before!
Please reuse OOT footage or add a window in the previous shot. I prefer the OOT footage, because that wall appears to be quite thick when you see the inset portal to the docking platform.
Maybe best technical solution would be a composition of DVD/HD and OOT footage.
Edit: This shot. The windows at the right can be kept as they are in the SE.

When Luke has entered the fin-like "reactor control" building and is attacked by Vader, the background behind Vader is of a curved corridor looking precisely like the one at their previous encounter.
The problem is that the fin-like building they are in is not curved! The inside does not match the outside. If possible, please replace the background in this shot with something else.

Edit: Overall, the sky color outside Cloud City should change gradually from blue to red, but this is done somewhat back-and-forth. I also think that the SE/2004 version is too red.

Edit:
ROTJ
Cut the Bantha herd or replace it with something else. It just looks fake. I love the music that is in the background, though... so I really don't want it shortened.

Use OOT footage of closeups of the Sarlacc where the SE shows the beak. I hate the beak - it looks like the plant-monster from Little Shop of Horrors.. I am just waiting for it to say "Feeeed meee".
The real set was sand-colored inside. If there is a shot of it straight down, then the pit should be dark in the middle.
I think the tentacles shouldn't come about until at least one person has fallen in.

In closeups of the lightsabers, give them a whiter core and make the two blades blend in better where they contact, or put a yellow flare here.

Redo Vader's flying lightsaber. The blade is coming out of the wrong end.

The footage from the DVD version of the Ewok celebration is OK. I just miss the old music.

Use a serene-looking Sebastian Shaw at the end. Hayden Christensen just looks embarrased.

Overall
Oh, and use high-def source material if possible! I think that performing color correction on HD footage before scaling down to DVD format would yield better DVD picture quality than starting off with footage in DVD format.
Make sure that the credits match what we see on screen. For instance, in ROTJ-SE, the credits to the people behind the musical numbers has been removed. James Earl Jones should be credited alongside Dave Prowse (and Sebastian Shaw).

ESB
I noticed in the OOT that Vader's helmet in the "I am your father" scene wobbles a bit. I think that it could be stabilized. The SE might use different shots for these lines where it wobbles in the OOT, but I am not sure.

In the run between docking platforms on Cloud City, it can be seen in one shot that Leia carries a different revision of the stormtrooper blaster than in other shots - it has two greeblies on the scope rail that aren't present on the props(s) she is carrying in the other shots.
Edit: It is the shot when R2 tries to interface with a terminal but gets a jolt of electricity instead. Leia is holding the blaster stationary by her side, and there is only a white wall in the background. The shot is also very short, so all in all I think it that the extra greeblies can be painted over easily.

Oh.. And don't forget the goof in the ESB-SE with the stained-glass windows when Han, Leia and Chewie meet Vader. Replace the windows behind the stormtroopers with cityscape or reuse OT footage in the preceding shots (easier).

ROTJ
Of course, I absolutely hate the revisions made in the SE, and very much prefer a very alien Lapti Nek, Ewok Celebration and a ghosty Sebastian Shaw over the later revisions.

Personally, I dislike the droid torture and would like this shortened. I know people who absolutely love this scene and have Eve-9D9 as their favourite character ... so I am aware that a lot of people disagree with me. At least remove the cartoonish screams.

If possible, Jabba's lips could maybe be a little more articulated.

I think it would be great if Bib Fortuna's tentacles would move a little. Maybe tighten or loosen around his neck, or the tip of a tentacle wiggle a little. I think it would be most fitting when he is in the background.

In ESB, when Han Solo is lowered into the freezing chamber, he is wearing restraints around his arms, tied behind his back. These are not there when he falls out of the carbonite block!
They should either be removed in ESB or added in ROTJ. I think it would be easiest to remove them in ESB, but it would be better if it could be pulled off with them being there in ROTJ, just because they look cool ...

At least four different props were used as Luke's lightsaber in ROTJ. I think the most apparent difference is that the saber that is shot out of R2-D2 does not have the knob at the top of the emitter, which the other ones have. Could this be added?

Should Leia be present at Vader's funeral pyre? I am not sure of this myself, though. What do you think?

Share your Star Wars theater experience
Time
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b345/DarthLars/Travels_With_Yoda_Stockholm/rigoletto-small.jpg
Rigoletto in Stockholm is the theater for watching Star Wars movies in Sweden. A few times, it has been the only one who showed a Star Wars movie on opening night. For a long time, it held the national record for screen size and number of seats.

In 2005, it was the only theatre that sold tickets to the opening night of Revenge of the Sith. My group waited in line (as #2 in line) for six days camping on the sidewalk next to the posters you can see on the left in the picture. The line stretched half a mile along the street to the next intersection. My group took organised the queueing system, we met a whole lot of fans, and had a lot of fun. Members of my group were interviewed by several newspapers and TV teams and also a book author that had followed us for almost a year. When we got our tickets we celebrated with champagne and cup cakes.

Sadly, the line experience was of course much, much better than the movie.

This image is of a Yoda doll that is traveling the world. He visited in January this year, and we just had to take a picture of the him with the theatre.

Your first words of reaction after watching one of the PT movies for the first time.
Time
TPM: I entered with expectations that it would not really have the old Star Wars feel to it, and knowing that there would be an annoying character, but I did not anticipate that the annoying character would be that bad. I left with a mild taste of disgust in my mouth.

AOTC: I had assimilated all spoilers to the movie completely, so was was not the least bit surprised about anything in the movie. I did feel that Lucas and McCallum was on the right track and if they continued like this, the next movie would be great.

ROTS: The "cartoon" feel started about five minutes into the movie... but the cartoonishness never ended. I was very disappointed and also angry, because I had entered with high expectations and not too many spoilers. I met and shaked hands with other haters after the movie ...
